driving lessons at school
BRITISH children should be
taught how to drive at school
to help reduce road deaths
and serious injury among
young drivers.
Insurer, Flexed says, we
should follow the example
of schools in the USA and
introduce driver education
lessons.
These classes will teach
basic driving skills, road eti-
quette and safety, which will
improve awareness and also
help with improving driving
test exam results.
Children at in-
fant school should
also be taught the
basics of road
safety and cross-
ing the road, while
primary schools
could offer road
safety classes and
cycling proficien-
cy lessons.
For children
aged 11 to 18, the
Highway Code
and basic driving
skills should form part of the
lesson plan.
Flexeds Mark Hall said:
Figures show that a third
of those killed or injured are
under 30.
One of the major reasons
for that is
a lack of
education
and expe-
rience.
Driving
is a virtu-
ally uni-
versal skill used by the majority of adults
in this country.
Why its not taught in our schools and
colleges is beyond me.
Teachour kids howto drive, and theyve
got something they can take, safely, out
into the adult world.

new home beneits
THE low maintenance
benefits of a new home
have been highlighted
in a survey from house-
builder Barratt Homes.
The survey reveals
high levels of DIY dis-
asters among the areas
home owners.
Barratt believe this can
be avoided if you buy a
brand new home instead
of renovating old homes.
Barratt sales director
Richard Lawson, said
while many homeown-
ers enjoy stamping their
own personal style on
their new houses, more
ambitious DIY projects
on older homes can prove
disastrous.
He highlighted one of
the many plus sides of
moving into a new home
is that you can still make
it your own but without
undertaking expensive,
time-consuming and po-
tentially dangerous reno-
vations as you will be
moving into a perfectly
prepared home.
People can still have
the chance to choose
their flooring, lighting or
kitchen for example but
have none of the hassle
involved in fitting, he
added.
The Barratt research,
conducted by One Poll,
exposed a range of DIY
disasters from collapsed
ceilings, flooded bath-
rooms and toxic spills,
resulting in a list of per-
sonal injuries caused by
drills, screwdrivers and
chisels.
And recent research
from Co-op Home Insur-
ance reveals that a third
of homeowners are in-
jured while doing jobs
around the home.
