Instructional Technology Integration

Introduction
- Ceramic Lotus Flower
- Elementary Art – upper grade level
- Length of Lesson- two 45-minuite-class periods
- VA Visual Art Standards of Learning
4.7 The student will describe and use hand-building techniques, including the slab
method, to make a ceramic work of art.

Learning Objectives
Students will:
– Examine Asian culture and the symbolism of the lotus flower.
– Experiment with the use of different techniques using clay.
– Create a lotus flower using the provided clay.

Materials Needed
-computer with power point
-teacher prepared power point with pictures of lotus flowers
-model magic molding clay
-glaze paint

Teaching and Learning Sequence

Introduction/Anticipatory Set
-The teacher will introduce the students to the topic of the lotus flower through a power
point presentation containing background information on Asian culture and pictures of
lotus flowers.

- The teacher will engage the students by asking questions and requiring the students to
respond with their feelings about the information they see.

Lesson Development
Class Period One
- After being introduced to the project through the presentation the students will be able
the practice molding clay and using varying techniques.

-The teacher will show through demonstration how to create the lotus flower. This will be
done by forming several layers of petals, then pressing each layer together at the center.

-With the provided materials the student will create their own lotus flower.

-The teacher will circulate the room, providing help as needed.


Class Period Two
- After the lotus flower has dried, the student will then paint it.

-Using the provide materials the student will select a color for their flower.

-When they have completed their work of art the student will place it in the assigned
location and continue with “free drawing” until the end of class.

Closure
-The teacher will review the techniques used in molding clay and what the class has
learned about Asian culture.

-The students will be asked to summarize what they have learned about the lotus flower
and its use in Asian culture.

Assessment

Formative
- The teacher will ask each student to summarize what they have leaned and show their
work of art to the teacher and/or class.

Summative
The teacher will evaluate the final piece of artwork asking the following questions:
-Does the lotus flower look realistic?
-Can the student explain the meaning of the lotus flower in Asian culture?
-Can the student identify different techniques used in ceramics?
