Dear Media,

The shooting down

of MH17:
What it means for
Australia and the
world

The shooting down of civilian airliner
MH17, with the loss of 298 lives, has
become a focus of international
outrage. It has also drawn world
attention to the conflict in Ukraine and
Russias role. Australia has found itself
at the forefront of this
tragedy, mourning the deaths of 37
citizens and residents while playing a
lead part in the global response.

In this special panel discussion, the
Lowy Institute will bring together a
range of experts to consider the wider
implications of the shooting down of
MH17. Issues to be discussed include
possible strategic and geopolitical
consequences, ramifications for global
order or disorder, the consular
dimension, international legal aspects
and Australias role. The panel will
include Russia expert Dr Matthew
Sussex, head of Politics and
International Relations at the University
of Tasmania, Lowy Institute
International Security Program Director
Rory Medcalf and Lowy Institute
Research Fellow Alex Oliver. It will be
chaired by the Lowy Institutes
Executive Director, Dr Michael
