Assume an adolescent with whom you are working reveals that three years ago an extended

family member sexually abused him/her. How will you proceed? What will you tell the client
about your obligation to report? What will you do if the client says that the perpetrator lives in
another state now and is no longer a danger, however the client fears the repercussions on the
rest of the family if they find out? Discuss the ASCA ethical standards and legal issues involved
that would serve as the foundation for your decision-making.

After hearing that this individual was sexually abused I would start an individual counseling
session. I would want to poke around the issue to find out more information about the
individual and the situation. I would plan to have my obligations to report posted in my office
but after hearing this individuals information I would have to inform them again that I do have
to report. If the perpetrator is living in another state the information the client gave me still
needs to be reported in case that individual comes back. This protects my client. I would want
to set a meeting up with the clients parent or guardian. I would first as the client if it is okay
that I set a meeting with their guardian and ask if they would like to be present for the meeting.
I would explain everything to the guardians that I explained to the client. I would want to refer
to an outside source for the client if they were not coping or any other type of symptom that
needs more assistant than I can give. When looking at my legal and ethical standards I would
focus my decision making off of A.1.a, A.2 Confidentially.

Date Rape Case
A sixteen-year-old female comes to your office (counselor's office) on a Monday morning. She
has dark circles under her eyes and it appears that she has been crying. Although reluctant to
share with you, she finally tells you that she was raped while on a second date with a
seventeen-year-old male student. She reported that they had each drank two beers, but were
not drunk. The male student is a popular athlete in the school and she is terrified to tell anyone
because she does not want to "get him in trouble" and have others be angry with her. She did
not tell her parents because she had been drinking and she was afraid they would be mad at
her and think it was her fault.

Discuss the best practice research based counseling strategy, ASCA ethical standards, and legal
issues involved that would serve as the foundation for your actions and decision-making. Cite
your references.
When looking at the ASCA ethical standards I always look at A.1.a treating students with respect
and A.2 Confidentially. Obviously, once she has said that she was raped I have a legal and
ethical obligation to report. I would make sure that this was explained to the girl so she did not
feel like I am just reporting her and leaving her. I would want to find out who she is comfortable
talking to. I would want to ask her if it was okay if I talked to the school nurse about the
situation. If she gives consent I believe that would be a solid individual for the girl to speak to. I
would also want to set up a meeting with the girls guardian. I would want to encourage her to
tell her. The best way I see doing this would be to have a meeting with the girl and the
guardian. That way I would know exactly what was said. The next step it what to do about the
male who is in the school system. This also needs to be reported but there should be
communication with the guardian as well as following the school protocol. The main thing for
the school counselor is to stay in constant communication with the individuals involved, the
parents and other professionals such as police officers.

Self-Mutilation
With a student who is self-mutilating themselves I would first want to pull them into my office
and do a little individual session. Poke around the reason why I believe they are self-mutilating
and then use my good counseling skill to try and find out the underlying issues. When dealing
with this type of situation I need to be aware of my legal and ethical obligations which would be
A.1.a, A.2 Confidentially. In these cases self-harm can be from a variety of different reason if I
felt he student needed more help them I could give them I would need to refer to an outside
source while still checking and doing some counseling with them at school. There are a variety
of different interventions one could put in with a student like this. Once that comes to mind is
athletics. When this self-mutilation occurs over time endorphins are released and that helps the
mutilation become addictive. If I could somehow find away from the student to get a release of
endorphins elsewhere. Such as, volleyball, basketball, track, ect. This also gets the student
around a social group and to possible have another adult in their corner aka the coach.

Create a list of a minimum of four substance abuse resources in your community. Specify which
resources are more for adolescents and the resources that are designed more for adults. If needed,
expand your community to include regional. (5 pts) POSSIBLE PORTFOLIO ARTIFACT
If I had a client whos parents have a substance abuse problem I would want to use the solution
focused approach and use strategies such as the miracle question and scaling questions. I would
want to really empower her by giving her skills to help her situation that will also be skills that
will transfer over to other situations later in life. I would ask if you woke up tomorrow and
everything was perfect what does that feel like what does that look like. With her answer I would
use my good counseling skills and figure out with her what would make her the happiest and
more successful. I would ask her periodic scaling questions on when she felt things were an issue
and what has to happen for her to jump up a number.

I would use
Kansas State University Alcohol and Other Drug Education Services.
This is a place that adolescents can go to get more information on substance abuse. This
information it tailored to specifically help adolescents.
Restoration Center
This is a specific adolescent substance abuse center. It seemed to have great information
on its site. I had never heard of it because but I would be interested to know more.
Manhattan Child/Adolescent Therapist Center
This place is an adolescent therapy center. If this child needs more assistant than I can
give them I would want to refer them. This seemed like a place I would think about referring
them to.
Drug Abuse- Kansas State University
This was another place that gave great information on drug abuse.

With all of these places before I recommend them to a student I would do more research and
contract the place to make sure the therapist seemed legit and knew adolescent information. We
want to make sure these counselors do not treat these students as adult there is a huge
developmental different from adolescent to adulthood.

A seventeen-year-old woman tells you she is pregnant and asks your advice as to whether she
should have an abortion. What should you do? How should you respond?
In this situation all I want to do is educate. I would want to empower her for coming into the
office and talking to me. I would say something like it seems your looking for what you do
know. I would tell her that I think a really great resource for you would be to talk to the school
nurse. A school nurse is extremely educated on this situation. I know the basics but she would be
of better help. With the girls permission I would want to pull the school nurse in and do a
consultation. Just mediate the information coming from the nurse to the student. Once all
questions were accounted for I would then want to discuss with the girl about her parents. I
would want to know if she had told them. If she had not I would really want to empower her to
tell them. To make sure that the information gets told I would want to schedule a parent and
child consultation. I would want the student to do most of the talking however, if the student was
not comfortable I would step in. Depending on what is said about the age of the male it could
conflict with my legal and ethical obligation. This is something that when finding out more
information I would take the correct steps. The key in this situation is to not give advice. I have
never been in this situation and giving advice is not what we do as counselor. We educate and
empower our students to make informed decision. I think the best person for the client to talk to
would be the school nurse. The school nurse could and probably should be present for the parent
consultation.
