Welcome!
YMAA Publication Center
was established so that
Westerners could access
the profound Oriental
developments in Qi,
Martial Arts, and Spiritual
Cultivation. As one of the pioneers in this exchange, YMAA
will continue to mark the path between East and West. It is our
hope that this path will lead to a new, benevolent society.
Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming
YMAA Publication Center turns 30!
YMAAs publishing program
began thirty years ago, a time
when publishing demanded highly
rened decision-making processes.
There were no convenient online solutions for designing, editing, or
printing a book. Video production was lm based, labor intensive, and
cumbersome. Those conditions required a careful selection of content
and strict production processes. There was little chance of a do over.
This traditional background has nourished the core of our company; it
helped to rene our quality and allows us to use many of todays newer
technologies on a solid platform of established publishing processes.
Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming created the foundation for our reputation of
publishing in-depth books and videos on martial arts and qigong.
Today we are fortunate to be the
publisher of choice for many of
the outstanding martial art and
eastern healing advocates of
our time.
We look forward to another
30 years of the honor of
working with them and being
the instrument to share
their knowledge.

Black Belt: Koryo

By Grandmaster Richard Chun
and Doug Cook. With Fred Kouefati
Learn both versions of the most popular Tae-
kwondo form in the world, Koryo and Original
Koryo. Taught and demonstrated by the worlds
foremost teachers Grandmaster Richard Chun
and Doug Cook, these forms will deepen your Taekwondo practice.
Every level 1 black belt student is required to learn Poomsae Koryo, which
is required for promotion to 2nd Dan and is popular in competitions. Yet,
few are familiar with the ancestral form known as the Original Koryo,
which maintains its martial arts essence.
Specifcally for level 1 and level 2 black belt students, this video will trans-
mit and preserve the historical treasures and technical elements inherent
in Koryo and Original Koryo, as well as their martial art applications. This
DVD is an important companion to the book Taekwondo Koryo Poomsae.

Joint locks
learn to improvise
Joint locks
under pressure
By Rory Miller
Joint locks are widely regarded as one of the
most versatile physical toolsthey can move,
immobilize, submit, or severely injure a threat.
They are also justiably regarded as one of the
more difcult martial art skills to implement in
real life.
In this video, Rory Miller makes the case that the problem is not with the
locks themselves, but with our teaching methods. His principles-based ap-
proach allows relatively new beginners to improvise joint locks with only
one hour of training, something that many traditional approaches have
failed to do with hundreds of training hours.
Joint locks are not primary self-defense techniques. If you are in a posi-
tion that requires self-defense, you are justied in and likely need a higher
level of force. However, if your job requires controlling violent people with
minimal injury, you must be good at joint locks and you must be able to
improvise them under pressure.

a connor Burke
Martial arts thriller
By John Donohue
Chie Miyazaki is wild and spoiledthe pam-
pered child of a cadet line of the Imperial
House of Japan. Minders have attempted to
keep her drug use and sex life under control,
or at least out of the tabloids. When she dis-
appears in the United States accompanied by
a slick Korean boyfriend, it sets off alarm bells
among people in Japans security apparatus.
The disgrace of a member of the Imperial
house is one thing, but US intelligence has picked up hints that the Korean
boyfriend may be taking orders from Pyongyang.
The Japanese want the problem solved quietly. They seek out Connor
Burke, prize student of the master martial arts sensei Yamashita. Burkes
sensei left the service of the Imperial House years ago for reasons buried
in the past. Now Burke accepts the charge to seek out the errant princess,
suspecting that hes somehow being used but also convinced that he needs
to spare Yamashita from the dangers of a mission that could be his last.
Compelled by the need to protect his master, Burke is swept along in a
covert search and rescue operation that soon turns into a deadly confron-
tation with a North Korean sleeper cell. In the process, Burke will not only
learn the secret that has drawn his sensei into such danger, but also some-
thing of the pull of the past, the power of decades old connections, and the
secret that both drove Yamashita from Japan and now pulls him back into
the service of the Imperial family.

This book addresses an important gap that exists in martial arts training. The
gap is the tricky space or the dirty ground that lives between sport and combat.
