of blocks to design and simulate the physical layer of communication systems and components. Unlike procedural programming languages, the Communications Blockset and Simulink visually capture the real-time concurrent interaction of algorithms that form a com- munication system. The Communications Blockset helps you design commercial and defense and wireless and wireline systems, including mobile handsets and base stations, Internet phones, and satellite systems. You can also use the blockset to design semiconductors in these products. Other applications include the design of read channels for mass storage devices, such as tape drives, disk drives, and DVDs. Communications Blockset 3 Design and simulate the physical layer of communication systems and components KEY FEATURES Hierarchical, block-based models for visually conveying complex designs Blocks for designing and simulating the physical layer of communications systems, including source coding, block and convolutional coding, interleavers, filters, and modulators Sources, such as random integer and binary generators, PN, gold code sequences, and sinks, such as error-rate calculations, eye diagrams, and constellation plots Channel models, including AWGN, Rayleigh, and Rician, and RF impairments, including nonlinearity, phase noise, thermal noise, and phase and frequency offsets Integration with the Communications Toolbox for post- simulation analysis Eye diagrams, scatter plots, and communication-specific displays enable you to visualize and analyze the signals at any point or step in your model. Physical Layer Blocks Together, the Communications Blockset and Simulink provide signals and blocks for modeling the sampled data and components of the physical layer of your communication system. Each block models a component. With the Communications Blockset, you can group sequences of samples together into frames. Frames simplify the design of a system consisting of blocks with multiple input and output sample rates. You can select input and output frame sizes to assign a single frame rate to a block or a cluster of blocks. Frame sizes and rates then map naturally onto the hardware of your design and implementation. Frame-based processing increases simula- tion speed because Simulink can pass input samples in a frame, schedule block execu- tion at the frame rate, and receive a frame of output samples. The Communications Blockset provides blocks for a typical cascade of random source, transmitter, channel model, receiver, and BER measurement. These blocks include: Data sources and sequence generators Source and channel coding, including block and convolutional coding Interleaving, analog and digital modulation, and pulse shaping Channel models and RF impairments Receiver algorithms, such as synchronization MLSE and adaptive equalization Specialized Visualization Blocks The Communications Blockset provides visualization blocks for communication engi- neering, such as eye diagrams, constellation plots, and bit error rate summaries. The block- set integrates with MATLAB and the BERTool GUI of the Communications Toolbox for com- paring the bit error rate of your system with a variety of proven analytical results.
