A Comparison between 2-D Isothermal Region

Matrix and Finite Element Analysis Cable Rating


Methods for Water Cooled Circuits

Abstract- Electrical power transmission networks may be
constructed using many different cable types and each cable
route is unique comprising multiple sections, each operating in a
different thermal environment. In order to manage the cable
assets of this transmission system effectively it is desirable to be
able to rate the load capacity of these cables precisely. In order
to operate the network, cable ratings are determined using
expedient cable rating calculations, typically analytical or one-
dimensional finite difference methods.
The case for forced cooling is more complex requiring the use
of two-dimensional (2-D) isothermal region matrices or Finite
Element Analysis (FEA) methods. To attribute confidence limits
to cable ratings attained using these methods; ratings for a single-
core cable arrangement including the effect of forced cooling are
solved by two methods and results are compared. In addition to
the typical assumption of an isothermal ground surface
boundary, a heat-flux boundary using a model of forced air
convection has been investigated using a 2-D FEA model. This
shows the isothermal boundary assumption to be optimistic.

I. INTRODUCTION

An electrical power transmission network may be
constructed using many different cable types and each cable
route is unique comprising multiple sections, each operating in
a different thermal environment. For example the
transmission network of England and Wales has
approximately 800 high voltage (HV) cables with 1500 circuit
ratings. In order to manage the cable assets of this
transmission system cost-effectively it is desirable to be able
to rate the load capacity of these cables precisely. In order to
operate the network, cable ratings are determined using
expedient cable rating calculations, typically analytical
solutions as found in IEC 60287 [1] and one-dimensional
(1-D) finite difference methods, for examples see [2, 3]. Load
current rating methods are dependent on solving a suitable
model for heat generation and transfer for the cables and the
surrounding thermal environment to determine the current that
will raise the cable temperature to an operational limit.
In the case of forced cooled circuits, where water is pumped
through pipes placed in proximity to the cables, computer
solutions become necessary to determine the temperature
profile along the cable route length to find the limiting
position, which may not be at the inlet, end or turnaround
point. For this study a simple two-dimensional (2-D)
approach solving a matrix of isothermal regions and their
thermal relationships is solved using proprietary software (for
a similar method see [4]). A 2-D heat-transfer Finite Element
Analysis (FEA) model is also reported. Steady-state results
obtained from the operational cable-rating model are presented
and compared to the 2-D FEA model.

II. MODELS

The example circuit modeled consists of two 400kV three-
phase circuits in two groups of three single-core cables buried
in flat horizontal arrangement, Fig 1. The two groups are
directly buried and each has four water coolant pipes running
above them, within both groups water is pumped in at a
temperature of 10C and a flow rate of 4.88 l.s
-1
per pipe,
down the two inner go pipes, the two outer return pipes
complete the water loop.

The cables are copper conductor fluid-filled paper dielectric
design with lead sheath and polyethylene outer-serving, with a
total route length of 2700 meters. Table I details the cable
properties.

A. Calculation of Cable Losses
Losses occur in three regions of the cable; joule losses in the
conductor, dielectric losses, and sheath loss due to induced
currents in the sheath. These losses are calculated and applied
as heat sources to each model.
Joule loss is calculated using Equation 1.

Sheath loss is calculated as a function of the joule loss using
a multiplier,

, dependant on the cable formation under study
[1]. In this study the value of

used for the outer cables of
each group equals 0.04503, that applied to the centre cable is
0.18012. The heat resulting from this loss is applied to a
single sheath node for the isothermal region matrix model and
at the sheath inner surface for the 2-D FEA model. This is
reasonable since the thermal conductivity of the metal sheath
is much greater than the adjacent regions of dielectric and
outer-serving/soil resulting in a near uniform temperature
within the sheath.
The total dielectric loss is applied at a single point in the IEC
calculation [1], using Equation2.

of the dielectric, equal to 3.5 for this cable. Tan for this
dielectric is 0.0028 therefore total dielectric loss found using
Equation 2 is equal to 14.98 W, per meter, per cable.

B. Isothermal Region Matrix
For this model a number of isothermal regions, nodes, are
determined to include the cable conductors, cable sheaths and
coolant pipes at a cross-section of the cable route. The
temperature of each node is related to the heat generation or
absorption of all the others, thus a matrix relating all nodes is
built. This is solved at positions along the cable route to
determine the rise in coolant and cable conductor temperatures
to find the limiting condition and a current load rating can be
found by iteration of this process until the operational
temperature limit of the cable is reached.
To model the problem some assumptions are made for both
models. These are; the cables and water pipes are buried in
homogenous medium with constant thermal resistance, the a.c.
resistance for the cable conductors is constant and so is
specified at the limiting conductor temperature. In addition
the isothermal matrix approach makes the simplifying
assumption that water film thermal resistances are negligible
and constant values of density and specific heat can be used
for the water coolant.
The simplified matrix model offers the advantage, over the
relatively more complex 2-D FEA model, of lower
computational effort, associated time to find a solution and
less setup time by ratings engineers; hence its extensive use as
an operational ratings tool.

C. 2-D Finite Element Analysis Model
The 2-D FEA model has been built using a commercially
available FEA modeling package. The geometry of the
modeled cables and coolant pipes is drawn and a dense matrix
of nodes fills all thermal regions. Boundary conditions are set
as isothermal (e.g. at the ground surface) or heat flux; inward
from a cable conductor or outward into pipes. The total matrix
of all nodes can then be solved to find the complete
temperature distribution for a 2-D section. A FEA model
constructed in this way, without forced cooling, has previously
been investigated and results were found to agree well with
the analytical solution of IEC 60287 [1] and a proprietary 1-D
finite difference software based upon the method of Electra 87
[2, 3].
For the 2-D FEA model the dielectric loss is more precisely
modeled by a continuous function for the heat-flux resulting
from dielectric loss, Equation 3. The derivation of which can
be found in [2].

D. Modeling of Forced Cooling
The 2-D models include solution of the heat-transfer at the
pipe boundary due to forced-convection water coolant. This
problem is complex in nature due to the dependence of the
heat transfer coefficient on viscosity, specific heat capacity
and their dependence on coolant temperature. For the 2-D
FEA model a solution has been implemented by dividing the
cable route into sections, the heat transfer for the FEA model
2-D section is then solved and a heat transfer coefficient at the
pipe inner diameter is then calculated and used for the
subsequent section calculation.
Calculating for the average coolant temperature along the
route, here estimated to be 20C since the maximum allowable
temperature of the pipe outlet is specified to be 30C, and inlet
temperature is 10C; the Reynolds number, Re, is 92839; and
the Prandtl number, Pr, 7.0. Thus the water in the pipes is a
developed turbulent flow. In the 2-D FEA model the heat
transfer coefficient is calculated using Equation 4.

Assuming a smooth tube wall; the Nusselt number is

calculated by the Gnielinski relation [5], Equation 5, using the
Blasius resistance formula [6] to calculate the friction factor, f,
Equation 6. Both these equations are suitable for use with this
range of Re and Pr numbers [7].

the specific heat capacity of the coolant. Thus with a
heat transfer coefficient at the pipe wall calculated using
Equation 4, a 2-D FEA model can be solved to provide the
heat flux at the pipe wall and Equation 7 used to calculate a
new bulk temperature for the subsequent route section.
Due to the interaction between the inner and outer pipe and
cable heats multiple iterations along the total route length are
required to achieve convergence of the heat fluxes, coolant
temperatures and cable temperatures along the route. The
convergence criteria used in this study was less than 0.1C for
all cable temperatures along the total route length in
subsequent iterations; in practice this always provided
convergence better than 0.2C for the pipe temperatures and
convergence was achieved within 3 iterations. With a solution
found the load can be adjusted until the maximum operating
temperature limit of the cable is found.

III. RESULTS

Table II presents results obtained using both methods, the
FEA model has been used to investigate the influence of four
different ground surface conditions. Firstly an isothermal case
at 10C, and also convective heat transfer for still air, 1 m.s
-1

and 10 m.s
-1
wind speeds. To model this the heat transfer
coefficient has been approximated using an experimental
relationship, Equation 8 [8].

If the current loads for all cables, and water flow in coolant
pipes is equal for all pipes, the symmetry about the centerline
means that the FEA model only need solve for one half the
geometry using a no heat flux boundary along this line. Fig 2
and Fig 3 show the convergence of solutions for a 2-D FEA
model, the case for an isothermal top surface of 10C. It can
be seen that it is not trivial to know where the hottest point
along the cable will be, indeed whilst the cables nearest the
centerline are hottest nearest the inlet, the center cables of the
two groups are hottest at the turnaround point. As may be
anticipated the outermost cables are coolest.

No change in the rating or pipe exit temperature was found for a
constant Nu matching that used by the isothermal region method.

A. Influence of Section Length
The FEA model makes the simplifying assumption of a
constant heat flux over each section length and thus results
will be influenced by this parameter, which must be chosen
correctly. The results of Table II demonstrate that for the case
of the isothermal ground surface the resultant current rating
does not significantly alter, less than 1 Amp, for a refinement
of less than 100 m section length. Thus 100 m results have
been presented for discussion.
The isothermal region matrix model does not make such an
assumption, but fits a curve of heat flux to coolant through all
sections in the longitudinal direction. There is therefore
negligible influence below 300 m.

B. Rating Results
Results clearly show that the isothermal ground surface
produces the most optimistic rating. This is due to an
effective additional cooling term at the surface being held at a
specified temperature. In practice with air above the surface
and heat transfer by convection the surface temperature may
be raised considerably considering the relatively shallow
burial depth of the cable circuit. The FEA model shows
however that this effect is less pronounced for the case with
forced cooling pipes positioned between the surface and the
cables. The simulation results show a reduction of only 0.7%
between isothermal and still air boundary conditions. As the
wind speed and heat transfer coefficient at the boundary
increases the resultant rating approaches the isothermal case.

C. Comparison of Methods
Of significant interest is the discrepancy of the results from
the two different rating methods. This must be due to greater
simplifying assumptions used by the isothermal regions
method. Solving the FEA model for the constant Nusselt
number used by the isothermal region matrix method showed
no change in the rating. The construction of the isothermal
region matrix and use of superposition is therefore suspected
to be at fault, the precise source of discrepancy will be sought
in future investigations.

IV. CONCLUSIONS

As was found in a previous model for directly buried cables
[2] the assumption of an isothermal ground surface boundary
produces an optimistic cable rating. This effect is less
pronounced in the case for forced cooled circuits being offset
by the dominance of the cooling action of the water pipes on
the thermal environment and their position between the cables
and the ground surface.
The results show that the isothermal regions method using
superposition and method of images produces a result that is
considerably different from the 2-D FEA model. It was found
that the discrepancy was not due to the assumption of a fixed
Nusselt number and heat transfer coefficient; an assumption
not used in the FEA model, which varies values with bulk
water temperature. Future investigations will seek to clarify
the cause of the discrepancy in results more precisely.
