GROUND IMPROVEMENT

Ground improvement is an essential component of many construction projects that involve major
underground work, unsuitable soil conditions, and/or unstable existing structures.
By improving the engineering properties of the onsite soils in-place, ground improvement
systems provide technologically advanced solutions to address a host of challenging subsurface
conditions. Layne has the combined experience and capabilities to offer state-of-the-art
technologies that provide cost-effective solutions for a variety of ground improvement challenges.

ADVANCED JET GROUTING TECHNOLOGIES
Jet grouting is a specialized process that produces in-situ mixing of soil and cement grout. After
drilling to the required depth, the jet grout drill rods are rotated and raised to the ground surface
at controlled rates, while injecting cement grout at a high pressure, forming a soil-cement
column. When placed in engineered configurations, the columns can be constructed to provide
effective treatment of large masses of soils.
Advantages to the jet grouting method include: higher compressive soil strengths in comparison
with other soil improvement methods; more uniform soil treatment; capability to improve isolated
soil areas; and definitive quantity and scheduling.
Key principals of Geo have been engaged in jet grouting production and technology since its
origins in Italy. Many jet grouting techniques and specialized equipment improvements that have
become industry standards were conceived and advanced by these individuals several during
their associations with predecessor companies of Layne.
SPECIALIZED GROUTING TECHNIQUES
Layne provides a variety of specialized, geologic-specific drilling and grouting technologies.
Layne develops and engineers numerous grouting programs and procedures, which assist in
determining the optimum level of grouting and customizing of designs for site-specific
applications. Our grouting technologies have been employed to mitigate sinkhole movement,
reduce large subsurface groundwater intrusions and provide large scale site improvement in
which loose soil strata did not make conventional ground support methods feasible.
Applications include:
Pre-excavation Soil Treatment
Grout Curtain
Dam Foundation Grouting
Soil Stabilization
Sinkhole Mitigation
Groundwater Intrusion Mitigation
Seepage Barrier / Cutoff Wall
All of our grouting projects are completed in conjunction with Laynes powerful GeoGrout
software to monitor and record drilling and grouting operations all while being monitored using
advanced Real Time Monitoring System. Our system fully integrates wireless and internet
technologies to enable Project Inspectors and the engineering team to view and track all site
activities.
High Mobility Grouting involves the injection of cementitious or chemical based grouts into a
soil/rock matrix to fill the pore voids or cracks, fissures in an effort to strengthen the material or
increase permeability to mitigate groundwater seepage. Balanced stable cementitious grouts are
used in dam foundations to create a grout curtain to reduce water migration beneath a new or
existing dam from the upstream pool.
Low Mobility Grouting involves the injection of low slump grout which remains in a
homogeneous mass and provides controlled displacement to fill void areas, compact loose soils,
and lift or level foundation structures. Grout casing is installed through a predrilled hole to the
desired depth of treatment. Low slump grout is then pumped under pressure as the casing is
withdrawn. The pressures and quantity of grout pumped is dictated by the in-situ soil conditions
and type of treatment needed.
Drilling and Grouting Equipment: Layne owns a large fleet of production-oriented equipment.
Depending on jobsite conditions, we can utilize our larger multi-axis hydraulic drill rigs with up to
100-foot long drill masts capable
of a 90-foot continuous feed stroke. These state-of-the-art machines allow us to reach the
anticipated maximum drilling depths required for typical barrier wall projects in a safe and
efficient manner. Or, we can rely on compact rigs specifically designed for low headroom or
difficult access conditions. We also have sonic drill rigs that we frequently use on dam
rehabilitation projects, along with the use of grout mixer plants, and high pressure grout and
water pumps.
On the manufacturing side, Tecniwell S.P.A. of Podenzano, Italy (a Layne company) provides the
unique capacity to design, customize, manufacture and test grouting equipment under varying
field conditions. This enables us to achieve optimum performance, resulting in increased
production and higher quality at lower costs to the client.
The grout mixing equipment designated for many of our larger projects, for example, has the
capacity to produce 40 cubic yards per hour of multi-component grout mix. In fact, the Tecniwell
Model TWM 30 is one of the highest producing grout plants available on the global market.
The collaborative efforts between Tecniwell and our highly experienced field crews give us a
strong technological edge by producing better products and continually enhancing the quality of
our services. In addition to high pressure grout pumps, Tecniwell manufactures state of the art
drilling rigs, mixing plants, and related ancillary tooling. For more information on Tecniwell,
