EATING OUT WALES 14
here is a well developed food culture in Wales
which combines natural farming systems,
artisan producers and large scale manufacturers
supplying retail, hospitality and public sector customers.
The food produced in Wales is very diverse and includes
obvious Welsh products such as Laverbread and Bara
Brith but also Welsh wines and beers, cheeses, meats
and baked products.
Welsh food and drink products have established an
international reputation. Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef
hold protected food name status and have been joined
recently by Pembrokshire Early Potatoes and Halen
Mn/Anglesey Sea Salt which emphasises quality and
provenance.
Increasingly, our excellent eating establishments in
Wales are serving a wider range of Welsh produce and
it is often sourced locally.
Food and Drink Wales provides an identity covering
the whole range of food and drink produce from
Wales and when you see the logo you know you are
supporting our food and drink producers.
This guide provides you with information on the
best places to eat out in south east Wales. Why not try
our wonderful food and drink which will leave you with
a lasting experience and an appetite for more.

EATING OUT WALES 16
ne of the greatest things about putting
together a guide such as Eating Out Wales
is the fact that it allows Mike and I the
chance to see the very best cooking thats on offer
here in south Wales.
Its great to see new food trends coming through
and its always a pleasure to meet new chefs and
restauranteurs. And of course, its always wonderful
to try the food thats given to us to photograph.
Without doubt, the big trend thats coming
through this year is keeping it local; buying local
produce from local businesses and supporting the
local economy. There really is a rm emphasis on
restaurants serving food that has been bought from
a farmer or supplier down the road and thats
something we absolutely love!
We hope that you enjoy this years Eating
Out Wales it really is a treat. Weve seen some
amazing meals being prepared this year and we
hope that you enjoy eating them as much as we
enjoying photographing and writing about them.
Why not read on and see what culinary delights
are on offer right on your doorstep?
To help you decide if a venue is right for you
weve devised the key thats printed on the right of
this page.

his is a family run business of artisan pie makers with the
idea that pies can, and should be, made better. With
ingredients including organic meats and cheese, eggs
from their own free range chickens and no fewer than three
National Great British Pie Awards in their rst year, mother
and daughter Cheryll and Collette Crewe have denitely
been doing their bit to promote Heritage Meats and true
provenance, and to support British Farming.
Working from their own farm, this has developed into a
real family affair. Collettes husband, Steve, has now joined
the Piedom, and Cherylls husband, Dave, makes cider to
be used as an ingredient for the pies. Customers can now
also buy a tasty pie with their daily loaf as Elm Tree have
taken over the old Grifths bakery on Church Road.
And another award! Elm Tree Foods of Newport has
claimed a place among the nations best pie makers,
receiving a Class Champion award at the prestigious British
Pie Awards held in Melton Mowbray on 30th April 2014.
The company won the Class Champion Award in the Pasty
category with their Elm Tree Pasty.
Collette Crewe of Elm Tree Foods said: We are proud of
our pasty and to win an award at the British Pie Awards is a
real achievement.

Tiny Rebels beers can be found in venues as

THE PASSION THAT CHEF SIMON KING HAS FOR FOOD
IS EVIDENT IN EVERY MOUTHFUL OF EVERY DISH THAT
LEAVES THE KITCHEN AT 1861.
EATING OUT WALES 29
ituated in the picturesque hamlet of Cross Ash, just
outside Abergavenny, 1861 is one of the countrys
most exquisite dining experiences, offering patrons
an incredible taste of Welsh cuisine prepared at the
hands of an experienced gourmet chef.
A family-run business, Simon and his wife Kate share
a wealth of experience in the restaurant industry, and
they bring this to their wonderful restaurant, for which
the menu is strikingly superb.
The sample menus on 1861s website read like a
culinary Bible, encompassing the nest local ingredients
with plenty of home-grown goodies. Supreme of Guinea
Fowl, garlic and parsley cream and fricassee of peas,
beans, little gem lettuce and mint feature as sample
mains, with the desserts able to convert even the most
hardened of dessert-skippers. After all, who could resist
an elderower pannacotta served with an elderower
fritter?
In glorious surroundings, with a menu thats simply
out of this world, 1861 is a must-visit restaurant for any

of the M4, The 3 Mughals boasts an incredible
menu full of modern and traditional cuisine, as well
as some authentic family recipes brought to the restaurant
by the chefs. Its this extra special addition that makes this
award-winning restaurant stand out from the rest.
Highlights include the Pudina Paneer Tikka from the
starters menu, Jhinga Zaffarani, which is served as either a
main or starter, and the Punjabi butter chicken.
The Pudina Paneer Tikka is a shashtlick of the
restaurants own home-made cottage cheese with bell
peppers and pineapple. Refreshing and light, its a great
starter.
Jumbo king prawns marinated in a rich blend of saffron
and yogurt with caraway seeds, the Jhinga Zaffarani is
served with a cooling mint yogurt dip and is truly delicious.
The depth of avours, combined with the high-quality
prawns, are a match made in heaven.
For an authentic taste, why not try the delicious
Punjabi butter chicken? Originating from the street-side
eateries of Punjab, this chicken tikka dish is simmered in
satin-smooth tomato gravy with a avouring of kasoori
methi. It really is exquisite!
Of course, the menu features all of the standard
Indian and Bangladeshi cuisine youd expect, such as korma
and bhuna dishes, and these sit very nicely alongside the
restaurants speciality selections. All dishes are available for

former glory (and some!)
The delectable meals available on The Gates
varied menus are meticulously executed by a team
of award winning chefs. All food is prepared in-
house all dishes being made from scratch. No
pre-prepared ready meals or boil-in-the-bag food
here! Best of all, The Gate is not tied to a brewery
or a pub chain company, so beer and wine is widely
varied and modestly priced to complement the ne
food.
And lets not forget that The Gate is a pub in the
old tradition. Fine wine and liquors abound and, in
addition to the usual suspects, you will nd no less
than ve hand pumps carrying real ales and ciders,
including Wye Valley Bitter and Sharps Cornish
Doombar. And then theres the whisky -The Gate
carries one of the nest selections of single malts in
the area.

However, no write-up about Gemelli would be
complete without at least a mention of its desserts,
which are simply legendary.
Even if you are t to burst after your starter and
main, leaving Gemelli without sampling one of their
desserts is strictly forbidden! In fact words cant do
them justice youll have to try them for yourself.
