Culture Olfactive
A few friends, a common passion: the sense of smell.
Different and complementary personal experiences.
An Association: Asquali, Olfactory Culture.
An objective: Olfactory, Scientific and media events.
A vocation: enable a larger public to discover
the mysterious and fascinating world of smell.
* MICHAEL MOISSEEFF *
Aromatician, modern Alchemist and Aroma Sculptor, whose aim is to discover the
mechanisms that induce smells to arouse memories and stimulate imagination. Doctor of
Biotechnology, he has studied all aroma production methods, from the simplest to the most
sophisticated.
* JACQUI LEDRESSEUR *
Over 25 years of cultural and professional experience, a deep interest in artistic and
scientific creation and a passion for communication allows her to ensure a liaison between
scientific research, artistic creation and the general public.
can be described in three words:
* AROMA *
ASQUALI'S Aroma Sculptors create quality formulae, combining natural essential oils,
synthesised products, and work on the modelling of olfactory shapes...
* TECHNOLOGY *
ASQUALI'S Aroma Sculptors use their scientific and technical competence for the
conception and production of original and attractive odorisation systems.
* COMMUNICATION *
Treating odour as a vector, Asquali's Aroma Sculptors have developed and concretised a
new communication concept:

Smell, fragrance, perfume, exhalation, aroma, scent, emanation, odour, aroma, flavour and
even stink or stench, are some of the magical and mysterious words which evoke the poetry of
life : the smell of a freshly mown lawn, the scent of wild plants, the aroma of spices, the
perfume of a rose, the fluid fragrance of the marine world, the wild exhalation of animals...
The Aromatician, alchemist of modern times, combines touches of odour to create exoticism,
subtlety, purity, and intensity. They sculpt aromas to induce dreams and recollections, to
stimulate, comfort or excite ones imagination, to rouse ones senses. In combining essential
oils or synthetic substances, the Aromatician works to achieve an olfactory shape, until then
only hidden away in his memory. Each day technical efficiency and artistic creativity produce
new aromas.
We think our lives are dominated by our sense of sight, but the more dinner time approaches,
the more we realise our real joy of living is linked to our sense of smell and therefore to the
odours and aromas of our everyday environment. They participate in all our emotions,
influence our behaviour, make life pleasant or unbearable, and can even be nourishing !
Odours rule our emotional life, delving into the depths of our brain. Odours stimulate,
suggest, evoke associations, frighten, enchant and excite us, but seem to belong to our
subconscious.
Odours are more reliable than sounds in plucking our heartstrings to make them vibrate.
They help us to recognise and identify, but also to remember.
When, from a distant past nothing subsists, after the death of beings, after the destruction of
things, smell and taste only, fragile but swifter, more immaterial, more persistent, more faithful,
linger longer, like souls, reminding, waiting, hoping, within the ruin of everything else, carrying
without bending their barely palpable drops, the edifice of recollection

Who would readily accept to be deprived of the full appreciation of the smell of a bouquet
of roses, of a fine wine, of a forest in autumn, or simply of the pleasure comparing the
aromas of a meat and mushroom casserole and a dish of strawberries, or even the ability to
detect a dangerous gas leak?
Asquali has developed its roots within the mysterious and fascinating world of odours. On
the trail followed by ancient plant distillers, glove perfumers, prospectors for unknown
aromas, we offer our services as guide.
Our workshops help participants to discover the wonderful world of smells. Children will
become aware of the difficulty of communicating this sensation and will acquire the
necessary vocabulary to surmount this handicap. Pursuing their investigations in their
everyday surroundings, they will enrich their means of expression by describing their
olfactory perceptions, feelings and emotions, becoming conscious of the world around them.
We also propose an initiation to the olfactory world for adults in the form of "odour
tasting" such as in wine tasting: the different odour families, such as fruity, woody, floral,
spicy, composed of natural as well as synthetic aromas are presented. The participants will
discover what characterises a natural smell and a synthetic one, becoming conscious of the
inherent problems of verbal expression in olfactory perception, as well as the increasingly
important presence of aromas in their everyday life.
Visit the Explorarme, a "smell centre", and follow experienced guides through a fragrant
world of smells, scents and aromas. Aroma Sculptors, scientists dedicated to understanding
how the nose works and why smells smell, will help you to rediscover the much neglected
sense of smell. Throughout your visit you will enjoy clear scientific explanations and will
understand how everyday life can be enhanced by a keen sense of smell.
The Explorarme is located in Montegut Lauragais, a small village near Revel at the foot of
Montagne Noire (Black Mountain). The visit starts with a stroll through a fascinating scent
garden where several hundred aromatic plant species will titillate your nostrils and sharpen
your sense of smell. In the lab, you can observe how the Aroma Sculptors tame the volatility
of aromatic matter to transform it into charming and surprising perfumes, scents, flavours
and aromas. You will then be able to challenge your senses in our smell museum, where
exhibitions entice you to "play with your nose"! Please phone to book.
