Enhance your
outdoor projects.
A new product at Lowes,
semisolid stains by Cabot
come in a variety of hues
and contain more pigment
than semitransparent
stains. This extra pigment
gives your wood added
protection from ultraviolet
rays, increasing the life
of outdoor projects. The
deeper pigment also
makes it easy to achieve
the desired color in fewer
coats, while still allowing
the woods natural grain
to show through.

TRY THESE HOT IDEAS FOR SUMMER.
1. Cut a 10-inch piece of nylon rope (#66513).
2. Feed about 2 inches of one end through the
bottom hole of a 6-inch terra-cotta pot (as shown
in the inset below).
3. Add potting soil, and place seasonal plants
in the pot, making sure the rope stays inside.
4. Next, fill a 1-gallon paint can (#60689) with
about 3 inches of water.
5. Set the pot inside the can with the rope
in the water. The rope will transfer water
up to the plant, allowing
you to water less often.
Check the water level
every few days.

SHELTER OVERHEAD.
Owens Corning Roofing Center
Lowes is the only place you will find the Owens Corning
Roofing Center. All Owens Corning shingles have a Class A
fire rating and meet the highest standards for impact
resistance. Depending on style, the shingles are protected
by 20- to 50-year limited warranties and will withstand
up to 130-mile-per-hour winds. Some styles also include
algae-resistance protection.
Visit the Owens Corning Roofing Center for an up-close
look at shingle styles and colors. Large displays show many
selections and offer helpful information about each product.
Youll also discover plenty of brochures, as well as actual
shingle color chips (as shown above) that you can take home.
Plus, shingle sample boards are available for checkout
(with a $12 refundable deposit), so you can see how the
shingles coordinate with your homes exterior. All the shingles
described on the following page are available by special
order from Owens Corning.
he main purpose of a roof is to protect, but it also can
enhance the look of your homes exterior. Lowes offers
an array of composition shingles (also known as asphalt

even mimic the look of slate or wood shakes, at a more afford-
able price. See the following page for information on the two
types of composition shingles: three-tab and architectural. And

of asphalt layered around a fiberglass
core and coated with mineral granules.
Each shingle has three sections, or

performanceall at a great value.
Wow Factor: Choose from many
colors, including various shades of
brown, black, and gray, as well as rich
greens and even white. Lighter colors
can make a small home appear larger,

architectural elements, such as windows

Color can have a profound effect on
your emotional health. Bright, warm
tones energize; soft, cool shades
provide calm and balance. Also, our
attitude toward particular rooms can
influence well-being. In bedrooms,
clutter and televisions can make
true rest and relaxation difficult.
Instead, the bedroom and the bath
should be sanctuariesfree of things
that remind us of responsibilities
and full of comforting textures and
soothing scents and colors. Consider
other areas of the home, too; for
example, innovative dishwashers
and garage doors with silencing
technology reduce household noise.
purification
Clean air and water in your
home will go a long way toward
promoting a healthy family. Air
and water purifiers from small
at-the-source methods to whole-
house systems, are designed to
fit any space or need (see Get
Cleaner Air & Water on page

indoor plants (such as the peace
lily shown at left) actually clean
your air by neutralizing toxins.
environment
A healthy home is achieved by
considering the whole environment.
Energy- and water-efficient appliances
are great for conserving natural
resources and reducing utility
billsand providing peace of mind.
Renewable flooring options, such as

some hardwoods, offer sensible
style while preserving resources.

our homes become
places for restoration

particles, including dust, mold spores, pet
dander, and pollen. Purifiers using HEPA
filters are most effective. Look for products
with a CADR appropriate for the rooms size.
Model variety allows you to customize the amount
of purification power for a specific space. The units
mobility lets you target problem areas.
Makes dry air more comfortable by adding
moisture to it. Choose a cool- or warm-mist
model in a size well suited for your space.
Humidified air soothes parched throats and minimizes
static electricity that may be harmful to electronics.
Protects wood floors and furnishings. Provides comfort
at a low temperature setting.
Removes moisture from the air. Needs
to be emptied periodically. Purchase

LETS BUILD SOMETHING TOGETHER 31
In a bath shared by family and guests, a pair of sinks gives each
person plenty of space and allows dual use. Pedestal sinks let
design elements such as beaded-board paneling and wallpaper
be more visible, while a tall linen cabinet adds ample storage
for toiletries and towels.
