TRY THESE HOT IDEAS FOR SUMMER.
1. Cut a 10-inch piece of nylon rope (#66513).
2. Feed about 2 inches of one end through the
bottom hole of a 6-inch terra-cotta pot (as shown
in the inset below).
3. Add potting soil, and place seasonal plants
in the pot, making sure the rope stays inside.
4. Next, fill a 1-gallon paint can (#60689) with
about 3 inches of water.
5. Set the pot inside the can with the rope
in the water. The rope will transfer water
up to the plant, allowing
you to water less often.

1. Cut a (6-foot-long) 1x 6 into three
2-foot-long pieces. (A Lowes employee
can cut the board for you.)
2. Drill a hole in the center of one board
using a drill/driver with a 2-inch hole saw
attachment. (Allow the hole saw to cool
between cuts.) Drill two more holes
spaced evenly on both sides of the first.
3. Sand all edges and circular openings.
4. Use wood glue to attach the three
boards, with the drilled board on top.
5. Prime, and allow to dry.
6. Paint stripes as shown. We used blue
paint (American Tradition, Precious Sapphire
#4010-7, satin) on top of white primer.

1 Working with a Lowes employee, the homeowners matched
various styles and finishes to create a customized design for
the cabinetry and the hutch. Blending light and dark woods
creates the impression that the furniture was collected
separately over time. Incorporating two countertop colors
continues the mix-and-match approach. The dark countertops
along the walls contrast with the light-toned cabinetry and
sage-green tile backsplash. On the island, dark wood pairs
with a light cream-colored countertop. The addition of spindle
moulding and beaded-board paneling also gives the cabinetry
the look of stand-alone furniture.
hese homeowners envisioned a casual kitchen that
would convey their love for the countryside.They now
have ample space for preparing and cooking meals, as well
as a comfortable room where the family can gather.
Drawing inspiration from early 20th century farm-
houses, the family selected different cabinetry styles,
colors, and wood types to reflect the eras use of mixed furni-
ture in the kitchen.A large island, the focal point of the room,
provides plenty of workspace and a spot for entertaining guests.
To stay true to a farmhouse feel, the homeowners splurged on a
large white apron sink and a bridge faucet.They also included
a light fixture that echoes traditional style as it illuminates the
island and casts a warm glow on this kitchen at the familys

The Challenge: In their new lake house, the family wanted
a kitchen with plenty of room to entertain guests and a style
thats reminiscent of a simpler time.
The Solution: The homeowners incorporated classic
elements, such as a large central island and open-storage
cabinetry, and the latest in appliances. The result is a
cozy kitchen perfect for entertaining, as well as quiet
family dinners.
VINTAGE APPEAL
2 Providing plenty of additional storage, the hutch is complete with
elegant moulding, glass-front cabinetry, and beaded-board paneling.
The hutch hardware has a slightly different look to set the piece apart.
3 The apron sink is a new trend inspired by days past. Its large,
deep basin is perfect for cleaning pots and pans. The bridge faucet,
termed this due to the connector bridge between the faucet and
handles, adds antiquity to the sink.
4 The cabinetrys cup pulls are reminiscent of the early 20th century
and complement the other bronze elements in the room.
5 Above the island, the bridge-style light pendant with a bronze
finish coordinates with the cabinetry hardware and the bridge faucet.
Additional general and task lighting is provided by recessed and
under-mounted cabinet lights.

Create the illusion of stylish
bands of satin or grosgrain
holding together a collection
of frames. First, tape off
2-inch-wide panels the height
of your wall using a laser level
(#200746) for straight stripes.
Paint the panels in the color
of your choice, allowing them
to dry completely. Using the
appropriate hangers, hang
your frames over the ribbon
panels in a grid, or staggered
as shown here.
We painted our faux ribbons
in a vibrant red (American
Tradition, Autumn Fire #1007-1A,
satin) on a wall of soft beige
(American Tradition, Ivory Brown
#6006-1C, satin) to display
framed fabric swatches.
Theres no rule saying art
must be hung on the wall.
To display these frames, we
chose a 30- x 80-inch door
(lauan slab laminate, #9423), and
painted it a warm teal (American
Tradition, Ocean Soul #5009-9,
satin). On the back of your
selected door, place
a large self-leveling
picture hanger (#52716)
in each upper corner.
Lean your door against
the wall, and then mark the
placement of the picture
hangers on the wall; install
the appropriate wall fasteners.

the picture hangers to the wall
fasteners to stabilize the door.
Hang multiple frames on
the front of your door using the

Suspend your framed
photography on chains.
Begin by hanging a curtain
rod (#180675) using all three
brackets so that it will support
the weight of the artwork.
Select frames of your choice.
On the top edge of each frame,
use a drill/driver with a

bit to drill a hole at each end
(as shown). Screw small screw
eyes (#58400) into the holes.
Cut two pieces of chain
(#62776) in lengths that will
accommodate the desired
placement of the first frame.
Loop one chain around the
curtain rod from back to front,
and secure with an S-hook
(#62769, #102958); repeat
with the second chain. Next,
take the loose ends of each
chain, and secure them to the
screw eyes in the frame using
S-hooks. Drill additional holes
on the bottom edges of one
frame to hang the second frame
from it, as shown here.

STEP 1: Build the frame.
a. Cut the frame sides, top, and bottom
pieces per the Cut List, mitering the ends.
b. Join the pieces as shown in the illus-
tration to form the frame assembly. Check
for square by measuring and adjusting
the diagonal dimensions until they are
equal. Set the nails, and fill all holes with
wood filler. Sand smooth, and wipe clean.
c. Spray-paint the frame silver. Allow to
dry, and then apply one coat of clear gloss
finish. Set the frame aside until dry.
STEP 2: Prepare and attach the slats.

STEP 3: Attach the cleat to the wall.
a. First, position the bed against the wall,
and lightly mark its centerline on the
wall. Move the bed to one side, and locate
the wall studs.
b. Use nails (or drywall anchors if nec-
essary) to attach the cleat to your wall,
working from the centerline. Paint the
cleat to match your wall color.
STEP 4: Install the headboard.
a. Position the headboard on the wall,
resting the frame top on the cleat.Then
nail through the top of the frame into

with this functional headboard created
from two louvered door panels.The panels
are secured together with mending plates
and then backed by netting to keep me-
mentos in place. The headboard can be
attached to the wall using industrial self-
fastening strips, rather than nails or screws,
making it perfect for college dorm rooms
and apartments.

STEP 1: Remove the included hardware
from the door. Lay the two panels on a
flat surface (matching sides up); apply

STEP 2: The front face of the assembly
should have the louvers angled upward.
On the back face of the assembly, place
a mending plate approximately 6 inches
from the upper edge along the glued
side edges as shown at right (A). Position
a second plate the same distance from the
lower edge, and then place the remaining
two evenly spaced between them.Attach
the plates using wood screws.
STEP 3: Keeping the front face down,
cut the netting to cover the back of the
entire assembly. Using a staple gun, attach
the netting to the upper edge of the door
first, and then along the other three sides.
STEP 4: Attach the netting to every fifth
or sixth louver using a bead of super glue
across the entire edge.This will keep items
from dropping behind the headboard.
STEP 5: Mount the headboard to the
bed frame, or secure it to the wall with
self-fastening strips as shown at right (B).

Aztec grass, purple fountain grass, and
verbena make a colorful grouping in
each of these planters (17-inch, #69420;
18-inch, #68111). Aztec grass and purple
fountain grass create texture and height,
while verbena blooms and trails in front.

This clump-forming selection has slender,
arching dark-green foliage with a silver midrib.
Showy summer plumes bloom atop 5- to 6-
feet-tall stalks and last into winter; fall foliage
turns orange. It requires moderate water and
sun. Combine with grasses of different hues
and with rich-colored perennials, such as
black-eyed Susans. Maiden grass (shown
at right) is a great selection of silver grass.

Grown for its colorful foliage and feathery
summer seedheads, this grass forms clumps
that are maintained easily. It loves full sun
and regular water. Use purple fountain grass
(shown at right) in containers or borders,
and pair with shrubs or perennials, such
as Homestead Purple verbena (as shown
below in the containers).

Water plants less often, but deeply and slowly.
This way, you wont have to water daily. Also, try
a few innovative products that will help make this
important task more enjoyable and productive.

its needed most. Added to
the soil, the water-absorbent
polymers work for outdoor as
well as indoor plants.
A constantly kinking hose can
make watering inefficient.

of this liriope cousin normally
grows 1 to 2 feet tall. Its
lavender flowers bloom in fall.
An ideal border and container
plant, it also can be used as a
ground cover. Combine with
other grasses, such as purple
fountain grass, and perennials,
such as verbena.
Mexican feather grass
Thin bright-green leaves form
erect clumps. Its flowering
stems divide, becoming very
thin and greenish gold. This
grass tolerates drought
conditions and works well
as a ground cover around
rocks and on slopes. Try it
with juniper and rosemary
(both have a bluish hue) for
a hearty, earthy look and feel.

CREATIVITY. JUST ADD LEGS TO A WOODEN TOP,

Step 1: Lightly sand the wooden top and
legs. Prime, and let dry.

Outdoor Classroom grants provide funding for environmental education.
Students at
Third Creek
Elementary in
Statesville,
North Carolina,
enjoy learning
about nature
in their new
outdoor
classroom.
Outdoor Classroom grants are
open to all K12 public schools, and
each school may request up to $2,000
for a proposed idea. Popular plans
include vegetable and flower gardens,
bird sanctuaries, and small ponds to
be used for habitat observation.
In cases of long-term or large-scale projects, Outdoor
Classroom grants for up to $20,000 are available. Northside
Elementary School in Walterboro, South Carolina, recently
was awarded $18,000 to construct an outdoor-learning
environment complete with student seating, workstations,
and native habitats for observation and experimentation.
The application deadline for the current award period
is August 31, 2006. If you would like to take learning out-
doors at your school, have your teacher apply online at

UTTERFLY GARDENS, greenhouses, and nature
trails are out of reach for many schoolsbut

have received a total of almost
