The Mystery of Pain
Douglas Nelson
2013 224pp 9781848191525 pb $25.00
Covering the traditional scientic models of understanding
as well as the current research, the book explores the different
types of pain, providing clear explanations of the structures and
processes involved. It examines key issues such as the placebo
effect, bromyalgia syndrome (FMS), and how social support and
understanding can be powerful tools in reducing pains devastating
effects. The book also looks at diagnosis and measurement of
pain, and how different models of thinking affect the relationship
between patient and clinician.
Approaching pain in a practical and scientic way, the book
helps readers understand the processes of pain. It will be essential
reading for anyone who wants to know more about pain and pain
management, alternative medicine practitioners, massage therapists
and psychotherapists.
The more deeply you understand the process of pain, the more
power you have to inuence it. Emerging advances in the science of
pain are not only fascinating; they open doors to possible avenues
of treatment. This book presents a comprehensive, accessible guide
to the scientic understanding of pain.
Its a joy to help alleviate pain. Its equally frustrating to see a
patient return with chronic pain that was at best temporarily eased.
The Mystery of Pain puts those cases in context, providing an
excellent framework for both patients and health care providers
to understand why what works for one may not work for another.
Douglas use of current research and familiar examples clearly
explain the revolutionary changes inuencing our approach to a
growing problem. I highly recommend it for anyone suffering from
or treating pain.

Condition-Specic Massage Therapy
Douglas Nelsons book The Mystery of Pain is a compassionate
work from the heart, very important for anyone who wishes to

this awareness, one of the universal noble truths we must learn to
embrace. Thank you, Douglas, for your compassionate and learned
guidance.

Heavenly Stems and Earthly
Branches - TianGan DiZhi
The Keys to the Sublime
Master Zhongxian Wu and Dr. Karin Taylor Wu
2013 37 cards 9781848191501 $25.00
The Stems and Branches are fundamental to understanding much
of the Chinese medicines and arts, yet many people know little
about them.
TianGan (Heavenly Stems) and DiZhi (Earthly Branches),
commonly abbreviated to GanZhi, originated in the ancient
Chinese cosmological sciences and is a complex calendrical system
which was created to codify the patterns of life and of the universe
itself. The ten symbols of Gan express the Yin or Yang perspective
of Five Elements and embody the Way of Heaven. The 12 symbols
of Zhi, made manifest in the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac,
hold the root of each Element and embrace the Way of Earth.
This set of study cards decodes some of the fundamental
messages from the 22 GanZhi symbols. The Chinese character and
key characteristics of each Stem or Branch are shown, providing
invaluable insights into their symbolic and numerological
meanings. For calligraphers and those who want to draw the
characters correctly, the stroke order is clearly illustrated on
separate cards.

Gold Mirrors and Tongue

The Cornerstone Classics of Chinese Medicine
Tongue Diagnosis - The Ao Shi Shang Han Jin
Jing Lu, and the Shang Han She Jian
Ioannis Solos
Forewords by Professor Liang Rong and Professor Chen Jia-xu
2012 304pp 9781848190955 hb $65.00
Two of the major texts in the history of tongue diagnosis are
presented and put into context in this volume, reafrming the
strength of tongue diagnosis as a core diagnostic method. These
key texts are made available to western readers for the rst time,
with typical, traditional Chinese editions reproduced alongside
the translation. The author provides an excellent overview of the
tongue diagnosis theories in the major classics prior to the Yuan
Dynasty (1271-1368), and discusses signicant developments
and publications. The Gold Mirror Records, rst published in 1341,
was a popular manual for centuries, appearing in many editions
and variations. Tongue Reections in Cold Damage, rst published in
1668, developed the eld of diagnosis as a whole by adopting
the analysis of tongue color as its main principle. Both texts are
introduced with meticulous English translations and notes.
This seminal text will give practitioners and students of
Chinese medicine a sound understanding of the theory and
practice of tongue diagnosis from the early texts, and will be of
interest to academic readers of classic Chinese texts.
While in school, I assumed tongue diagnosis was as old as pulse taking.
Later, I learned it was developed by the warm-disease school of the Ming
and Qing dynasties. Wrong again! This book traces the true story of tongue
diagnosis. The translations and illustrations provide a clarity that seems to
be lacking in modern times.
- Lorraine Wilcox PhD, LAc, teaches, researches, translates,
and writes books on Chinese medicine, Los Angeles
Ioannis Solos lucid and cutting-edge scholarship gives us direct access
to the key classical literature on tongue diagnosis. Now, for the rst time
practitioners and scholars in the West can learn from the same sources as
colleagues in China and East Asia.

The Great Intent
Acupuncture Odes, Songs
and Rhymes
Richard Bertschinger
June 2013 224pp 9781848191327 pb $39.95
Songs and rhymes have been used by physicians for centuries
in China as a means of memorizing and passing on methods of
practice and behavior, moral attitudes, effective points, diagnostic
tips and rules of thumb. These poems offer a rich insight into
the life and thought of these skilled doctors, as well as practical
indications for treatment. Contemporary acupuncturists can see
from these poems the depths of the tradition, better understand
a breadth of diagnostic skills and treatment planning, and as a
result greatly improve their appreciation of intent within their own
practice.
This is the rst translation of these acupuncture odes,
songs and rhymes from the Great Compendium of Acupuncture and
Moxibustion compiled by the Chinese physician Yang Jizhou
during late Ming China. The book includes detailed introductions
that place the work in historical, cultural, and medical context, a
symptom index, a point index glossary and a list of helpful points
for common signs and symptoms encountered in acupuncture and
physiotherapy clinics. It also serves as a gentle introduction to the
philosophy behind acupuncture practice.

Richard Bertschinger
2010 304pp 9781848190481 pb $24.95
The Secret of Everlasting Life is the rst translation from the Chinese
of the second-century Can Tong Qi. This ancient work, the earliest
known text on transformation and immortality, echoes the wisdom
and poetry of both the Tao Te Ching and I Ching. The Can Tong
Qi is also the ancestral text of all Qi Gong exercises in China.
This translation reveals for the rst time the meditation methods
practiced for thousands of years by Taoist sages.
Presented here with its original Chinese commentaries, the
Can Tong Qi is full of practical information and advice about the
process of human transformation and how to nurture and develop
the natural life-energy within us. Richard Bertschingers additional
commentary explains the intricacies of Chinese allegory and
symbolism for the Western reader.
This book is an insightful read for anyone interested in Taoist
thought, Chinese philosophy and culture, or Chinese medicine.

imbalances and restore harmony. He describes the nature of the
ve elements, the meridians and the meridian points, inviting
the reader to experience them through guided internal exercises
using the body, breath and mind. Instructional drawings and
photographs are included throughout the book.

Fire Dragon Meridian Qigong
Essential NeiGong for Health and Spiritual Transformation
Master Zhongxian Wu and Dr Karin Taylor Wu
2012 200pp 9781848191037 pb 15.99
Fire Dragon Meridian Qigong is a traditional Chinese internal
alchemy method that embodies the spirit of the rising dragon, an
auspicious symbol of transformation in Chinese culture. The form
works directly on the acupuncture meridians, releasing areas of
stagnation and bringing the physical and emotional body into a
balanced state of well-being.
This Qigong form implements special visualization and
breathing techniques in addition to movements that imitate sparks
arising from a bonre and swirling upward like a spiraling dragon.
Stoking our inner re melts away the ice, or the areas of blockage
and disease, opens our energetic pathways and allows the smooth
ow of Qi in our meridians. The Fire Dragon practice follows
the traditional internal alchemy process, where Jing (essence)
transforms to Qi (vital energy), Qi transforms to Shen (spirit), and
Shen returns to Emptiness. Fire Dragon Meridian Qigong is a key
Qigong form for those seeking healing from cancer and other
signicant health challenges, and is the practice the authors turned
to in order to transform the grief over their sons death.
The book provides background information and a detailed
description of the form itself, illustrated with calligraphy, meridian
drawings, and photographs throughout.

Tranquil Sitting
A Taoist Journal on Meditation and Chinese Medical Qigong
Yin Shi Zi translated by Shifu Hwang and Cheney Crow
Forewords by Master Zhongxian Wu & Glenn H. Mullin
2012 96pp 9781848191129 pb $19.95
Tranquil Sitting is the Taoist Master Yin Shi Zis practical guide and
inspirational testament to the healing power and spiritual benets
of meditation and Chinese medical Qigong.
The book explores the theory and physiological aspects of
meditation and offers practical instruction in traditional meditation
techniques. It also documents Yin Shi Zis personal experiences
with meditation, his own self-healing which he attributes to his
Taoist practice, and his initiation into the Tibetan tantric practice
of opening the crown of the head.
Faithfully translated from the Chinese, this is an inuential
text that belongs on the bookshelves of everyone with an interest
in Taoist practice and meditation.
Master Yin Shi Zis book so enthralled me that I read it in a single sitting.
His training in classical Chinese medicine and as a professor of physiology
enables him to express both his own experiences and his guide to cultivating
a practice of these methods in a language easily comprehensible to the
modern reader. His book is a wonderful contribution to our understanding
of the nature of Taoist/Buddhist yoga, meditation, and inner science.

Verses for Rening the Golden Elixir
Chang Sen Feng, translated by Shifu
Hwang and Cheney Crow
2012 112pp 9781848191150 pb $19.95
Written during the Tang dynasty, this unusual tantric guide
documents a sexual tantra that is thought to have been practiced
by kings for several dynasties, before losing favor to a more ascetic
approach to Taoism. According to legend, the author was last seen
on the edge of a precipice, clasping the book to his chest, and
proclaiming the sincerity of his practice.
Translated into English for the rst time, this illuminating text
carefully describes the methods of this sexual internal alchemy
practice, pursued strictly for the spiritual advancement of the
practitioner, and undertaken only once desire and attachment for a
consort had been overcome. Cloaked in metaphor, the techniques
and attendant virtues of the practice are presented in beautiful
poetry and prose, with explanatory commentaries throughout.
This is an important historical text that will provide a
fascinating insight into ancient tantric practices for anyone with
an interest in Taoism, Chinese history and philosophy, and tantra
or meditation practices.

that emerges. This insightful book covers all aspects of Tai Chi,

A New Book of Change
Translated with commentary by Richard Bertschinger
2011 336pp 9781848190832 hb $39.95
For 2,000 years the Yijing, or the Book of Change, has exercised

poetry of lines and devoting ourselves to its meaning, the heart of
the ancients is clear. We pick up perhaps in a way we never could
have conceived of, how to guide and direct our lives.
With an introduction that explains the underlying structure
and philosophy of the Book of Change, as well as its history, and
a detailed explanation of how to throw the yarrow sticks, or the
coins, the novice reader is given everything they need to take
their rst steps in consulting the ancient oracle, and those already
familiar with established translations will nd this fresh translation
from the original texts clear and illuminating.

A Practice of Western Holistic Medicine
New Edition
Graeme Tobyn
July 2013 276pp 9781848191211 pb $29.95
Drawing on the writings of Nicholas Culpeper, the 17th-century

introduction celebrates the holistic medical traditions of the
West, and places Culpeper in his appropriate context as one of
the forebears of modern holistic medicine. An extensive new
introduction to the work comments on the latest research and
developments in the area.
The book traces the development of the Western holistic
medical tradition from its origins in the natural philosophy of
Ancient Greece to the work of Culpeper himself. It describes
and explains the relationship between the four elements, the four
humors and the four constitutional types: sanguine, choleric,
melancholic and phlegmatic, as well as explaining the functional
relationships of organs and body systems. The book explores the
interconnectedness of psyche (mind) and soma (body) and includes
a section on herbal medicine and therapeutics with a study of 20
common herbs, dietary suggestions and uses for culinary herbs.
It also provides accessible information on astrology and the
importance of the horoscope for holistic patient assessment. The
book looks at the holistic approach to the preservation of health
and prevention of disease, with explanations of the various disease
states, their humoral medical diagnosis and treatment.

Chinese exercise called Jiangan The Chinese Health Wand. This

Mirror-magic
Stand with your back to the mirror. The baby is still sitting
in your hands. Now turn your hips to the left so that the baby
can see into the mirror. Stay in this position for a moment.
Now turn to the other side, and then alternate sides a few
times.
On the diagonal
You are standing; babys back is snug against your tummy.
Clasp babys left hip with your right hand. Now twist to the
right, on the diagonal: your left foot rises onto the tips of
your toes as your left arm swings to the right. Repeat the
exercise on the opposite side. This stretches the muscles.
Sitting exercise
Kneel down and sit back on your heels. The baby is sitting
on your lap. Shift alternately down onto your right buttock,
then the left. The child comes too. Pause briefly each time
you shift weight. This practises lateral movement,
strengthens the muscles along the spine and improves your
gait.

At last its time to have a rest. Thats mostly when your
thoughts begin to whirl as you consider everything that still
needs to be done. This footbath can help you to switch off.
Add a few drops of vinegar, the juice of half a lemon and a
tablespoon of dried lavender flowers to a bowl of warm
water; stir, and put your feet in. Switch off and think of
something nice!

sleep soundly.
Ingredients: litre of milk, a pinch of ground nutmeg,
1 teaspoonful of almond butter, a pinch of brown sugar.

1. Hello, sweetheart!
Lay the baby on her back. Place your hands, one
on top of the other, diagonally over the babys
chest. Apply gentle pressure in the direction of the
feet. Maintain eye contact and greet your baby
with a song or rhyme, or say the following verse:
Is the mouse in the house?
Here comes the mouse,
here comes the mouse,
tingalingaling.
Is [babys name] in the house?
The baby perks up, anticipating that you are about to pay
her a lot of attention.
2. Turning the baby onto her tummy
Place your right arm between the babys legs and
over her breastbone and tummy. With your left
hand, hold the childs right shoulder. Press gently
on the chest and tummy. With your left hand, turn
the baby very gradually sideways. If she raises her
head, turn her fully onto her side and finally onto
her tummy.
This promotes coordination and supports the
child in learning to turn over.

of this position you can put a small rolled-up towel
under her chest and armpits. Hold the sides of the
babys trunk with both hands your thumbs stay
on the babys back. Work your way down to the
pelvis, applying gentle pressure with your thumbs
on either side of the spine as you go. When you
reach the sacrum, place your hands on it, one on
top of the other, and push gently towards the
babys feet.
The childs capacity to stand up is enhanced. This
exercise strengthens the spine. Thats important for a

Through Myofascial Release
Noah Karrasch
Foreword by C. Norman Shealy, MD, PhD
2012 224pp 9781848190856 pb $39.95
Too many of us hold our physical, mental and emotional pain
within our bodies, where it slows energy, manifests as tension and
can have a damaging impact upon our health. In his new book,
Noah Karrasch shows that wellbeing and healing come from the
detangling of blocked emotions and the restoration of the free
ow of energy through the body.
Written for bodywork and manual therapy practitioners from
a wide variety of disciplines, as well as other healers who want
to expand their skills, this generously illustrated book explains
how and where emotions and static energy are held in the body,
and how they can be released and rebalanced in therapies that
challenge bodymindcore awareness. It includes many new ideas
and techniques: useful conversation starters to help practitioners
encourage clients to self-identify their challenges, detailed
explanations of myofascial release techniques and self-reective
exercises designed to rst help the practitioner truly understand
the process for him or herself, through his or her own body, in
order to become a more empathetic and effective therapist.
An immensely valuable book for everyone who wants to be alive, fully alive.
It is a practical guide to health and emotional freedom, integrating models
from East and West into an empowering vision of how free and unblocked

Noah Karrasch

2009 184pp 9781848190160 pb $18.95
Based on the idea that the body is composed of twenty-one
important hinges, Meet Your Body shows how we can oil and free

emotional issues, but also the soul.
This book discloses how indigenous traditions can be adapted
to offer practitioners a highly effective repertoire of insights,
psycho-spiritual approaches and therapeutic tools. The underlying
concepts and world-views of indigenous and contemporary
shamanism are explained and tied in with current developments in
psychology and science. After clarifying altered states of perception,
concepts of integrative wholeness of mind, body, soul and spirit and
transformative shamanic healing approaches, the book goes on
to outline concrete contemporary tools and techniques that can be
applied directly to work with clients. It presents research, examples
and case studies throughout.
This will be enlightening and compelling reading for
psychologists, therapists, counselors and coaches looking for
profound insights and innovative methods of practice that cater for
the whole human psyche, reaching beyond contemporary Western
mind and body approaches.
A truly compelling, well researched, yet accessible book for therapeutic
professionals conveying a wealth of knowledge, insights and practical
applications.

I Send a Voice is the gripping, rst person account of what happens
inside a Native American Sweat Lodge. Evelyn Eaton writes of
her resolve to become worthy of participating in a Sweat Lodge
healing ritual. She undergoes tests and ordeals inside and outside
of the Lodge following the spiritual path to learn the shamanic
secrets, and eventually daring to ask for a healing Pipe of her own.
This classic book remains one of the denitive accounts of the
training and work of a Pipe-carrier and provides a unique insight
into Native American culture and their sacred and esoteric rites. It
will be essential reading for everyone with an interest in Native
American culture, shamanic rituals or holistic healing.
A page turner, written by a remarkable woman describing a remarkable journey.

Practiced in community centers and psychiatric hospitals
throughout Brazil, Spiritist therapies are gaining increasing
recognition internationally for their ability to complement
conventional medicine. This pioneering text is the rst
comprehensive account of the philosophy, theory, practical
applications and wider relevance of Spiritist therapies to be
published in the English language.
Leading practitioners and researchers in the eld describe
the history, principles and diagnostic processes of the Spiritist
approach to mental health, and provide an extensive summary of
the various methodologies used, including spiritual mediumship,
energy work, prayer, homeopathy, past life regression and
the practice of integrating spirituality into counseling and
psychotherapy. Considering the ways in which Spiritism aligns
with contemporary science, they show that the Spiritist model
has the potential to bring about a positive transformation in the
ways in which mental health care is conceptualized and delivered
around the globe. The nal part of the book explores how Spiritist
centers and psychiatric hospitals are established and nanced, with
specic examples from Brazil and the US.
Providing important new insights into the rich tradition of
Brazilian Spiritism, this authoritative text will be of interest to
mental health professionals, counselors, therapists and alternative
and complementary health practitioners.
Clinicians who are open to exploring transpersonal aspects of
mental health and illness will nd this book absolutely fascinating.
This book will also be of interest to anyone who is exploring the
deeper processes and meanings of life and the human condition.
