Ohios Bill McCorkle Wins Inaugural PBA50 Dick Weber Super Senior Classic for First PBA50 Title 61-year-old McCorkle defeats PBA Hall of Famer Johnny Petraglia 244-173 in title match By Jerry Schneider - PBA LODI, NJ - Adam Strand pitched a 300 game en route to a 728 set rolling in the Tuesday Night Trios at Lodi Lanes. Kevin Lingle bowled 279-718, Dominic Prunella 278, Jennifer Dunklin 277-722, and Michael Choynowski rolled a 712 set. Gallagher, Pepe 300 at South Levittown FORT WAYNE, Ind. Bill McCorkle of Westerville, Ohio, won the biggest tournament of his professional career by defeating PBA Hall of Famer and eight-time PBA50 Tour winner Johnny Petraglia in the championship match of the PBA50 Dick Weber Super Senior Classic presented by Storm. In the inaugural event for PBA50 Tour players ages 60 and over, McCorkle defeated the top-seeded Petraglia 244-173, at Pro Bowl West to record his first PBA50 Tour title. McCorkle got off to the early lead stringing the first five strikes while Petraglia struggled missing the 2-4-6-10 split in the first frame and the 1-3-6-7 washout in the fifth frame. Ive been bowling in PBA competition for 40 years and never won at the national level so Im a little overwhelmed, said the 61-year-old McCorkle whose best previous PBA50 Tour finish was fifth. I was fortunate to get off to a good start but then I had to remind myself to stay loose and continue to throw good shots. Toward the end of the match I started to get a little emotional but then I looked over at the Dick Weber trophy and thought what would Dick do, and at that moment I was able to get the inspiration I needed. McCorkle qualified second for the stepladder final thanks to a 11-1 record in match play. My goal was to make the top five, said McCorkle who has won six PBA regional titles. I think I benefited from the tougher condition because it enabled me to throw harder which I like to do. The big games werent out there so there was a premium on making good shots. In the opening stepladder match one-time PBA50 Tour winner No. 4 seed Dave Patchen of Oregon, Ohio, defeat- ed one-time PBA50 Tour winner No. 5 seed Mike Henry of Brunswick, Ohio 258-190, and then went on to beat Don Blatchford of Santa Monica, Calif., 207-202 in the second match to finish third. McCorkle defeated Patchen 212-195 in the semifinal to advance to the title match. Tim Panek 300 at Rockaway Lanes 2 SPORTS REPORTER July 30 - August 5, 2014 BUFFALO, N.Y. - National champions were crowned in six divisions at the 2014 Junior Gold Championships presented by Ebonite, Columbia 300, Track and Hammer. Tylor Greene of Davison, Michigan, and Breanna Clemmer of Clover, South Carolina, claimed the 20- and-under titles, while Adam Zimmerman of Deer Park, New York, and Ashley Channell of Morris Chapel, Tennessee, won the 15-and-under division. In the new 12- and-under divi- sion, Anthony Neuer of L e w i s b u r g , Pennsylvania, and Madison Bailey of R o c k l i n , California, earned victories. A record field of 2,479 United States Bowling Congress youth members from across the country took part in the event, which awarded more than $200,000 in scholarships. Greene, 20, entered match play as the top seed and went undefeated in the double-elimination match-play bracket. He took down defending champion Wesley Low of Palmdale, California, 443-388, in the two- game title match. "In the other years I made match play, I went 0-2, so it was a relief to get past the first few rounds," Greene said. "Wesley and I are good friends. With him being the defending champion, it really put some pressure on me, but I think there was a lot on him as well trying to defend. Winning Junior Gold is unreal. It's one of the biggest accomplishments of my life, and I won't forget this moment." Two years after winning the U15 division, Clemmer, 16, found her way to the U20 title by defeating Rachael Albright of Genoa, Ohio, 387-353, in the title match. "Being able to bowl with college girls for the past three or four years has helped me a lot," Clemmer said. "Watching them bowl has really helped me understand how to play the lanes and what kind of mental game you need to have at Junior Gold. It feels good inside to know that I have won two titles at Junior Gold. It means that all of my hard work has paid off." The top two players in the U20 boys and girls divi- sions after 25 games of qualifying who were age eligi- ble earned automatic spots on Junior Team USA in 2015. Those spots went to Michael Preston of Oswego, Illinois, Low, Melanie Hannon of Cheektowaga, New York, and Chenoa Rhoades of Lafayette, Indiana. In addition, the players who advanced to the U20 championship match and were age eligible also earned automatic spots on Junior Team USA. The only player eligible was Clemmer. Since Low had already earned a spot and because Greene and Albright were not age eligible to earn spots, three additional selections went to the National Selection Committee. The selections to Junior Team USA were Kamron Doyle of Brentwood, Tennessee, Kyle Sherman of O'Fallon, Missouri, Michael Coffey of Melbourne, Florida, Michael Tang of San Francisco, Stephanie Schwartz of Racine, Wisconsin, Julia Bond of Aurora, Illinois, and Katelyn Simpson, Emmett, Idaho. In the U15 boys final, Zimmerman, 15, entered the champi- onship round with one loss and needing to defeat M i c h a e l Schoerner of Pl ymout h, Wisconsin, twice to take the title. Zimmerman won consecutive matches, 377- 350 and 387-274, to take the victory. "Going into the second game, I was hoping to bowl the best I could and see what happens," Zimmerman said. "To continue to make good shots for that many games is tough. To be able to call myself a Junior Gold champion is unbelievable. It means the world to me." Channell, 14, made it into the U15 girls champi- onship match for the second consecutive year but this time turned a runner-up finish into a victory by defeat- ing Brogan Zengel of Centerville, Ohio, 365-273. "I went undefeated in match play last year," Channell said. "I lost both matches in the champi- onship match, so it meant a lot to win this year. It was a great experience, and there was a lot of great com- petition." Four U15 bowlers who were age eligible earned spots to compete in the Tournament of Americas in 2015 and to join the Junior Team USA development program. Those players were Cortez Schenck of Phoenix, Schoerner, Channell and Zengel. In the one-game U12 boys championship match, Neuer, 12, defeated Alexander Horton, 169-131, to earn the victory. "I thought it was a good experience," Neuer said. "You need to make your spares in this kind of tourna- ment, and it means a lot because there were a lot of good bowlers." Bailey, 12, entered as the top seed and rolled through match play, eventually defeating Sarah Sanes of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, 151-135, in the title match. "It was scary and I was really nervous since it was my first time at Junior Gold," Bailey said. "But my dad says that hard works pays off, and it means everything to win." Former PBA Commissioner Mike Connor Dies at 81 By Jerry Schneider - PBA PBA photo Mike Connor Six USBC Youth Win at National Junior Gold By Lucas Wiseman - IBC July 30 - August 5, 2014 SPORTS REPORTER 3 SEATTLE Based upon input from women bowlers, Professional Bowlers Association Deputy Commissioner Kirk von Krueger announced that the PBA has adjusted membership dues for women for the balance of the 2014 season as part of a revised PBA Womens Regional pro- gram. The inaugural PBA Womens Regional program, offer- ing women bowlers close-to-home opportunities to bowl in PBA-caliber competition, will culminate with a PBA Challenge television event on ESPN which also will fea- ture the PBA Regional Finals match, PBA50 Tour Finals match and Teen Masters Grand Championship match. To enhance the program, the PBA will pro-rate membership dues for women to $75 for the balance of the 2014 season, and waive the standard initiation fee for new members. Weve received a lot of favorable reaction from inter- ested women bowlers since we announced this new pro- gram, and based upon that feedback, were making a few other adjustments to the program including a pro-rated membership structure for women for the rest of the 2014 season to make it more accessible and more affordable, von Krueger said. The new regional program will result in eight womens points leaders based on three-tournament series conducted by the PBAs East, South, Central, Midwest, Southwest, West/Northwest combined and Japan Regions advancing the PBA World Series of Bowling VI in Las Vegas. The PBA Womens Regional Finals in Las Vegas will feature an eight-game round-robin match play competition at South Point Bowling Center on Oct. 24. The top two players will advance to the ESPN telecast. The eight regional qualifiers also will receive paid entries into the World Series where they will compete in the PBA Cheetah, Scorpion, Chameleon and Viper Opens all leading to a chance to qualify for the PBA World Championship. Additional updates to the womens program include: A new $75 PBA membership, with no initiation fee, will be offered to women for the duration of 2014 if they wish to join. Women who want to compete for berths in the PBA Womens Regional Finals in Las Vegas must be PBA members in order to earn points in their regions, and to enter the PBA World Series of Bowling VI. The competition points leaders for three designated tour- naments in the eight regional programs will also receive paid entries to bowl in the PBA World Series of Bowling VI. The top two women in combined West/Northwest Region points will qualify for the PBAW Regional Finals. A PBA Regional title will be awarded if the regional tournament field includes 20 or more PBA women mem- bers, or if a woman wins the open portion of the region- al outright. Winning a PBA Regional title also means a player is eligible to enter the PBA Tournament of Champions. Other aspects of the PBA Womens Regional program will continue as originally announced: Women will bowl with and against male bowlers in each regional tournament, but women will be guaranteed at least one cashing spot (minimum $250). All women will be eligible to cash in the general prize fund and if she is a PBA member and wins the regional, she will earn a PBA Regional title (which also means eligibility for the PBA Tournament of Champions). Women who are PBA members may enter regionals at the PBA member entry fee; non-member women will pay the non-member entry fee. This is an entirely new program for us, von Krueger added. We are going to watch it closely, listen to players and do whatever we can to make it bigger and better in the future. We know there are hundreds of women bowlers across the United States who are looking for a place to bowl in high-level competition, and thats what were striving to provide. 2014 PBA WOMENS REGIONAL TOUR SCHEDULE PBA East Region Aug. 15-17 PBA Bethmann Russell Syracuse Eastern Open presented by Radical, Flamingo Bowl, Liverpool, N.Y. AT ROCKVILLE CENTRE Jason Overstreet is New USBC Deputy Executive Director Terry Bigham - USBC ARLINGTON, Texas Jason Overstreet has been named United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Deputy Executive Director by Executive Director Chad Murphy. The move elevates Overstreet from his previous role as Managing Director of Marketing and Communications, and is part of a broader leadership restructuring. Joining Murphy and Overstreet on the new USBC executive team will be Chief Financial Officer Jennifer Salazar and Managing Director of National Governing Body Neil Stremmel. A search is ongoing for a Managing Director of Technology-Operations-Planning. Moving forward, I believe USBC needs fewer executives and more direct accountability, Murphy said. I also felt naming a clear second in command for the organization was important. Jason Overstreet is a unique fit with his knowledge of the bowling industry, media background, and analytical focus. As deputy executive director, Overstreet will continue to oversee the marketing, communications, television production and business development functions for USBC, while adding supervision of associ- ation development and member- ship services. As part of the restructuring, Murphy will assume executive leadership of USBC tournaments and Stremmel will assume execu- tive leadership of USBC rules. I am grateful for this opportunity to serve USBC and the sport of bowling in a larger way, Overstreet said. I share Chad Murphys belief that this structure will help strategically align USBCs business units, allowing us to serve our customers and the industry more efficiently and consistently. Overstreet joined USBC in 2008 as Director of Public Relations and Publications following more than a decade of work as an on-air televi- sion reporter. Before coming to USBC, he was a lead reporter for the FOX network affiliate in Dallas/Fort Worth. Overstreet also previously worked for television stations in Oklahoma City and Champaign/Springfield, Ill., as both a news reporter and sports anchor. Prior to his media career, Overstreet worked in the Washington, D.C. office for Fleishman-Hillard Public Relations. Overstreet grew up working in a 16-lane bowling center, touching every part of the business from the pro shop to youth league director. He holds a degree in communica- tions from Northwestern University and an executive busi- ness management certification from the University of Texas at Austin. ARLINGTON, Texas - Team USA's Mike Fagan of Dallas and Nathan Bohr of Austin, Texas, helped the United States qualify for the 2015 Pan American Games bowling competition with a strong perform- ance at the Pan American Sports Festival in Puebla, Mexico. The pair easily led the country all-events total at the event with 10,572 for 48 games, combining their totals from doubles, mixed doubles and singles. The 2015 Pan Am Games will take place in Toronto. The Team USA women did not qualify for the Pan Am Games but will have a second opportunity at the Pan American Bowling Confederation Women's Championships in Cali, Colombia, in September. The U.S. pair of Kayla Johnson of Washington, Illinois, and Sarah Lokker of New Baltimore, Michigan, missed qualifying by one position. They finished sixth in the country all-events standings with 9,057. "We had a great week on the men's side, but we still have a little work to do on the women's side to qualify for the Pan American Games," Team USA head coach Rod Ross said. "I'm proud of the effort put in by all four players, and I look forward to our women's team competing in Colombia for a spot." As of now, 14 teams will qualify to compete in the Pan Am Games. The top seven men's teams in the country all-events standings who had not already qualified earned spots. The qualifying countries from PASF were the United States, Mexico, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Panama and Aruba. Four countries qualified at the South American Games - Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina and Brazil. Canada automatically earns a spot as the host country. The final two spots in the Pan Am Games field will be determined at the Central and Caribbean Games. For the women, three spots were awarded at the PASF event with Mexico, Brazil and Costa Rica advancing. Four teams from the South American Games qualified - Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina and Chile. Four teams will qualify at the PABCON Women's Championships and the final two spots will come from the Central and Caribbean Games. In addition to Pan Am Games qualifying, medals were awarded in four events at the Pan American Sports Festival. Players battled for medals in dou- bles, mixed doubles, singles and Masters match play. Fagan and Bohr earned the silver medal in doubles to start the week and excelled from there on out. Bohr teamed with Lokker to win mixed doubles, and Fagan and Johnson took the silver. In the singles event, Fagan earned the gold, while Bohr took silver. Fagan struck gold again in Masters, while Bohr earned a bronze medal.
