Read Essay #1 and Essay#2 that follow. They are from the book Black!mart. Think
about the followin" issues:
#1$ %ow are these essays rele&ant to a course in 'nte"ration(
#2$ ) definition of the term e*uality is "i&en. 's e*uality+ not inte"ration what Black
,eo-le really want(
#.$ These essays are about knowin". /hat is the rele&ance of knowin" your enemies and
knowin" where you stand to inte"ration(
#0$ 's there anythin" about these essays su""estin" that Black ,eo-le cannot trust white
-eo-le(
#1$ The final essay states the followin": 2The 3ews disco&ered that it is not enou"h to -ick
the side you want to stand with. E&en more im-ortant is that you -ick the side that is
willin" to stand with you.2 's that statement of -articular im-ortance to Black ,eo-le in

'n order to a&oid alliances which will not benefit Black ,eo-le+ three thin"s should be
re-eated here #es-ecially to you 2black and white to"ether2 sin"ers and 2workin" class2
2communists2 and 2socialists2$.
7umber one: Racism -ermeates )merican society. Because of this+ inte"ration is out of
the *uestion #it takes two to inte"rate$. But+ e*uality is well within 8ur reach. /e don9t
need the coo-eration of anyone to "et e*uality. /e don9t need to transform white society
in order to "et e*uality. /e don9t need to rely on Con"ress and the courts in order to "et
e*uality. )ll /e need in order to "et e*uality is 4s: 4s+ as thinkin" -eo-le who -lan and
act with 4s in mind. That9s all /e need. )nd+ since e*uality is more desirable than
inte"ration #nations ha&e e*uality$+ e*uality is what /e should seek.;
7umber two: The entire history of the labortrade union mo&ement has been
characteri<ed by racism+ mani-ulation of )frican workers+ and coo-eration and
collaboration between labor 2leaders2 and the ca-italist class. 7ot one time in the history
of class stru""le ha&e Black ,eo-le been "enuinely &iewed as o--ressed comrades by
whites. Blacks ha&e always been &iewed as a se-arate "rou- which can be used to
hi"hli"ht inhumane conditions+ but i"nored and sacrificed once the bar"ainin" be"ins.
8ur relief has ne&er been taken seriously because the whole system of makin" money and
"ettin" o&er #call it ca-italism or anythin" you like$ is based u-on the unfair use of
Black=)frican labor and Black=)frican minerals #land$. /hat the 2class stru""lers2
bar"ain o&er is a more e*ual distribution of the "oodies amon" more white -eo-le+ with
selected -ro&isions for certain brainwashed 7e"roes who acce-t the -ro-osition that
inte"ration is a necessary first ste- toward re&olutionary -ro"ress.
7umber three: The lon" arm of )merican im-erialism results in a tremendous flow of
income into this country. This income not only -ro&ides the rulin" classes with a hi"h
standard of li&in"+ it -ro&ides the workin" class #whites$ with a comfortable standard of
li&in" as well. 't -ro&ides the workin" class with a standard of li&in" which the workin"
class will refuse to "i&e u-. They don9t want to destroy the source of their comfort+ all
they want is a hi"her de"ree of comfort. They don9t want to destroy im-erialism #des-ite
what many of them say to the contrarytheir comfort de-ends on im-erialism$+ therefore
they don9t want to end the economic ensla&ement of Black ,eo-le #in )frica and
elsewhere$. )ll they want is a hi"her standard of li&in"+ and they are willin" to use and
abuse Black ,eo-le+ Brown -eo-le+ >ellow -eo-le and ?artians to "et it@ -referably
throu"h the bar"ainin" table+ but throu"h what they call 2re&olution2 if all else fails.

/hat they call re&olution cannot be e*uated to uni&ersal -ro"ress+ Brothers and !isters.
/hat they call re&olution is a chan"e in who holds the -ri&ile"ed -ositions on the totem
-ole@ it is not the destruction of the totem -ole itself. Think about what that means for
Black ,eo-le+ then determine if you want to use your ener"ies and intelli"ence to ele&ate
whites+ or if you want to use those ener"ies and intelli"ence to -re-are Blacks for a
humanitarian stru""le. The choice is 8urs to make+ Brothers and !isters. Each of 4s
should choose wisely.
,eace be with you+ Brothers and !isters+ if you are willin" to do what is necessary to "et
it.
;78TE: /e feel it is necessary to define e*uality+ since many Black -ersons seem
inca-able of understandin" terms and creatin" definitions which do not be"in with or
"i&e s-ecial consideration to white -eo-le.
E*uality is the ri"ht to control those institutions which affect 8ur li&es and determine 8ur
future. 't is the ri"ht to determine how 8ur schools are run and what is tau"ht in them. 't
is the ri"ht to establish a social and economic structure that fits 8ur &iews concernin"
-roduction+ distribution and "eneral welfare. 't is the ri"ht to be selfdeterminin"@ the
ri"ht to decide if /e should -ay taxes and+ if so+ how they should be s-ent. 't is the ri"ht
to establish a system of relationshi-s which will be beneficial to 4s+ Black ,eo-le.
E*uality has nothin" to do with kee-in" u- with whitey+ indi&idually or collecti&ely. 't
has e&erythin" to do with 8ur natural ri"hts+ from the ri"ht to withdraw because of
indi&idual -references to the ri"ht to 6oin 8ur forces+ claim land which is due 4s+ and
establish a "o&ernment which will 6ustly re-resent 8ur cause at the conference table of
nations. That is e*uality+ Brothers and !isters. 7othin" less will do:

3)no4 6here 5ou Stand3
The 3ews didn9t know where they stood in Aermany in the 1B.Cs+ Brothers and !isters.
Too many of them allowed the Aermans to mislead them. Too many of them acce-ted
ideas and information they should ha&e re6ected+ and re6ected ideas and information they
should ha&e acce-ted. )s a result of this+ as a result of not knowin" whose side they were
really on+ or where they really stood+ six million of them "ot slau"htered.
Don9t make the same mistake the 3ews made+ Brothers and !isters. Don9t be confused
about whose side you are on@ E78/ /%ERE >84 !T)7D. This is im-ortant because
knowin" where you stand will determine how you inter-ret what you read and what "oes
on in this country and the world.
Enow where you stand in relation to white -eo-le in this country. 4nderstand that white
-eo-le ha&e had since 1F1B+ almost .FC years+ to "rant 4s the liberties which any human
bein" has by ri"ht of birth. 4nderstand that they ha&e not "ranted 4s 8ur ri"hts in so
lon" a time because they ne&er intended to "rant 4s those ri"hts and still don9t intend to
"rant 4s those ri"hts. 4nderstand that /e will "et what /e deser&e as human bein"s only
when /e take 8ur destiny+ 8ur future+ into 8ur own hands.
Enow where you stand in relation to 2liberals2 in this country+ -articularly white liberals.
4nderstand that white -eo-le ha&e been hel-in" 4s "et what they want 4s to ha&e e&er
since they hel-ed dra" 4s off the sla&e shi-s+ but they ha&e ne&er been willin" to hel- 4s
"et what /e wanted to "et. The white 2socialists2 and 2communists2 of today #6ust like
the white re&olutionaries of the 1B2Cs and 1B.Cs+ and 6ust like the white 2liberals2 of the
1BFCs and 1BGCs$ want 4s to mo&e in a direction that will not threaten their definition of
what the world order should be. They want 4s+ Black ,eo-le+ to "et in&ol&ed in their
white family ar"ument+ but they don9t want 4s to introduce 8ur own solutions to the
-roblems that afflict 4s because /e mi"ht seek to destroy the one thin" all of the
2socialists2 and 2communists2 and 2liberals2 want to kee- ali&e@ /e mi"ht seek to destroy
white su-remacy+ and none of the white "rou-s are -ro"ressi&e enou"h or re&olutionary
enou"h to seek the destruction of that.

Enow where you stand Brother+ and you too !ister+ because that knowled"e will
determine whether you stand or fall. 't will determine whether you ask or be". 't will
determine whether you lead or follow+ whether you walk or crawl+ and whether you lau"h
or cry+ etc. 't mi"ht e&en determine how lon" you li&e+ or how soon you die.
)nd know another thin"+ Black ,eo-le. 4nderstand that where you stand is not your
decision alone to make. The 3ews thou"ht they stood with the Aermans sim-ly because
they had decided to stand with the Aermans. They soon disco&ered+ too late+ too late+ that
the Aermans had other ideas. The 3ews disco&ered that it is not enou"h to -ick the side
you want to stand with. E&en more im-ortant is that you -ick the side that is willin" to
stand with you.
Enow where you stand+ Brothers and !isters. E&en if you don9t understand anythin" else+
understand where you can "o for certain -rotection when thin"s start "ettin" hot. 'f you
don9t understand that+ you will -robably end u- in the middle of a crossfire or in the
torture chamber of the enemy.
!tand with your Brothers and !isters. !tand with the -eo-le who look 6ust like you look
and ex-erience 6ust what you ex-erience. !tand with Black ,eo-le.
,E)CE be with you+ Brothers and !isters+ if you are willin" to do what is necessary to
"et it.
