Nuclear Energy, the best option

Written by: Juan Sebastian Cornejo Caceres

Nowadays nuclear power is one of the most studied fields by the science
and engineering, it is a complex form to produce energy generating heat with a
physical and chemical reaction called fission with the most technological resources
like nuclear plants and expensive reactors, a lot of people think that it is dangerous
and it prejudices our health because in the history of the humanity some tragedies
that occurred time ago were related to the nuclear energy, but through the years
some people realize that nuclear power is the best option to produce energy for our
needs, its a clean, affordable and secure energy.
According to a 2007 report from Power Partners nuclear energy produced nearly
two-thirds of all electricity for homes and businesses in countries like the USA.
Nuclear power plants generate heat from fission rather than burning fuel so they
produce no greenhouse gases or emissions associated with acid rain or urban
smog a contaminant very common in big cities, and this is a positive point for this
energy because currently the contamination levels are very high and it is
necessary to find new alternatives ways to produce energy. Some opinions like the
Professor at the University of Wisconsin School Jeffrey Patterson are against
nuclear energy, he said that the radiation related to nuclear power plants are
extremely dangerous four human. Maybe it is true that the high contact with
radiation is dangerous but, if nuclear plants are controlled carefully the risk will
decrease. A lot of people believed in the thoughts of the professor Jeffrey but the
other part think the same as The World Business Council for Sustainable
Development an organization who said that nuclear power is one of the keys to
reduce the contamination.
In order to produce energy with the principle of fission it is necessary the use of
uranium a non-renewable mineral resource which someday it is going to be
exhausted and it would be a huge problem for the nuclear energy, but some
researches of The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development
(OECD) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) found that the
uranium resources for nuclear power are enough for at least 100 years and whit
the new reactors could extend that period to more than 2,500 years. Whit this
important information we can affirm that the uranium is one of the most price-
stable energy sources making the nuclear energy one of the most efficient and
affordable energy in the world.
Through a lot of years this method of produce energy has been a lot criticize and
the biggest problem or myth of the nuclear energy is that it is dangerous for
humans. People like Dalai Lama, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and Rigoberta
Mench Tum who said that after Chernobyl and Japan (some of the most terrible
tragedies related to nuclear energy) it is time to recognize that nuclear power is not
a clean or safe source of energy. The reasons of these recognized and wise
people are valid but not completely because the majority of problems were caused
by human mistakes. Studies of The Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) show that the
nuclear energy are secure there have been no radiation-related health effects. The
last study give us support to continue using nuclear power in order to produce
energy in order to have a better and cleaner planet.

Nuclear power it is a complex form to produce energy and nowadays there
are a lot of discussions about this topic some people have a wrong image of
nuclear energy caused by past problems and tragedies related to this energy, but a
lot studies and people are sure about nuclear power being the best option to
produce energy, if it is used properly and in a carefully manner, because nowadays
the demand of electricity and other resources are increasing. It is a clean energy
since that the fission does not generate pollution or contaminant gases, the nuclear
power is an affordable and it will be able to produce energy for a long time, it is
secure as it is shown by a lot studies.
