orchestras in Budapest, Hel-
sinki, Copenhagen, Gothen-
burg, Paris and Leipzig. She
has also appeared at the
Aspen Music Festival in
Colorado. Her recent recit-
als include the complete
works of Bach for solo vio-
lin.
There are two powerful
pieces on this program. The
first is Carmen Suite by
Russian composer Rodion
Shchedrin. Shchedrin was
born in 1932 in Moscow and
was the chairman of the
Composers Union of the
Russian Federation, suc-
ceeding Dmitri Shostak-
ovich. While his name is
somewhat obscure in the
west, his Carmen Suite is
his best known composition
here and was championed
by Shostakovich.
It is based on the opera by
Georges Bizet.
What you will hear in this
piece: You will recognize
many of the most popular
melodies from the opera.
Shchedrin manipulates the
original melodic material in
wild and ingenious ways
and also uses a large bois-
terous percussion section.
This work has flamboyance,
fire and is outright fun to
hear. It will truly be a real
tour de force.
The second piece is Sere-
nade for Solo Violin, String
Orchestra, Harp and Per-
cussion by our favorite
American composer, Leon-
ard Bernstein. Bernstein
states, There is no literal
program for this serenade,
despite the fact that it result-
ed from a rereading of Pla-
tos charming dialogue, The
Symposium. The music, like
the dialogue, is a series of
related statements in praise
of love, and generally fol-
lows the Platonic form
through the succession of
speakers at the banquet.
Each of the five speakers
propounds his conception of
love, thus this composition
is in five movements. This
music goes through many
moods and is a virtuosic
piece for the solo violin.
This final concert, not to
be missed, will truly be the
finest of the season.
New this season will be
the pre-concert overtures.
These informal dialogues
and informative talks with
the guest conductors are
free to all concertgoers.
They will take place in the
Lodge adjacent to the Stan-
ley Concert Hall beginning
at 6 p.m. on the night of the
concert. The guest conduc-
tor will be present between
6:30 until 6:45 p.m. A cash
bar will be available. Please
join us.
Concert tickets: $30 each
(cash or check). $1 per tick-
et is added to all credit card
purchases. Tickets are avail-
able at the door or on-line

from Boulder.
From whence and whither
Mozart and his popularity a
full 223 years after his death?
The simple answer is that
Mozarts music has a univer-
sal appeal which will probably
never expire. To the casual
listener, his music is bright,
cheerful, and serene.
Beneath, however, are quali-
ties deep and profound, with
evidences of underlying ten-
derness and melancholy.
Mozarts creative ability was
the most comprehensive
known to music and rarely
has a human being been
unmoved by the beauty of this
music.
The gem of Monday eve-
nings program was his final
symphony, No. 41, Jupiter
which was performed at the
end of the program. This sym-
phony was the last in his final
trilogy of symphonies all com-

months in 1788.
The profundity and con-
trapuntal intrigue contained
in this symphony made us
wish the program had con-
tained another of Mozarts
late symphonies as well.
The last movement was
stunning where Mozart
combines his several melo-
dies all at once in an amaz-
ing display of counterpoint
that one would expect only
of J S Bach.
The performance that
guest conductor Andrew
Grams drew from the
orchestra was at once spirit-
ed and buoyant yet beauti-
fully crafted and sensitive to
the subtleties of Mozarts
phrasing.
The concert opened with
a lesser known and earlier
Mozart symphony, No 33,
written some 9 years earlier.
While lacking the profundity
and contrapuntal mastery of
No. 41,
this is still Mozart in full
displaying his ability to write
engaging melodies, dancing
tunes and an exuberant fina-
le. In all, it was a gratifying
opening to a radiant night of
music making. Conductor
Grams revealed himself as a
sensitive and knowledge-
able Mozart interpreter,
gracefully shaping the musi-
cal lines and bringing out
the best from the orchestra.
The soloist for the eve-
ning was the first horn of
the Colorado Festival
Orchestra, Amy Jo Rhine.
Ms Rhine brought us the
last of the Mozart four horn
concerti.
One will usually hear a
Mozart piano or violin con-
certo at an all Mozart con-
cert. It was a welcome treat
to hear a member of this
fine orchestra step up in the
solo role and even more so
to hear a wind player as
soloist.
Next Monday, August 4, is
already the final concert in
this outstanding series; look

I
was just thinking about
how much horses have
done for mankind in
the past. Which
brought to mind how little
we utilize them now and how
protective we are of them. I
agree we are obligated, as
owners or riders, to take
good care of them. I like the
fact that horses often live
into their thirties or even
older, that they have good
veterinary care, nutritious
food, dental care and so on. I
just think we underestimate
how much they can do.
Especially since they now
receive such good care. And
yes, Im aware that there are
those who dont take such
good care of their horses. I
just think we generally dont
realize how much work they
are capable of.
Ive often heard riders say
their horse was tired. It was
possible to hear it breathing
hard, which was interpreted
as being tired, it had to be
urged on, and was sweating
a little. Yet, as soon as we
turned toward home, the
horse found new vigor. It
stepped right out, head bob-
bing and pulling on the
reins, ready to travel. Some-
how, they got immediately
got tired again if we turned
away from their home cor-
ral.
Ive often mentioned that
horses used on ranches in
the past worked hard. I dont
know that I ever saw a fat
horse on the ranches where
I worked. Come to think of
it, I saw very few fat ranch
hands, either. Well fed and in
good shape, yes. Fat? Cant
think of a single one, horse
or man.
I have pictures of equip-
ment horses provided the
power for. Road graders,
with four to six horses pull-
ing, and pulling hard. I think
it still have a picture of a fel-
low who did chores on the
Dogie ranch, where he was
driving thirty some horses
on a ground driven separa-
tor(threshing machine). He
had four lines, two for the
near and off horse of the
back row and two to the out-
side horses of the four in the
lead. The rest of the horses
had jockey sticks between
the bridles. There wasnt a
fat horse in the bunch, but
they were all in good work-
ing shape. If you knew Nor-
man, the driver, you were
absolutely certain they were
well taken care of.
Anytime you drive on a
road, you can bet it was built
by man and animal power
originally. The same goes for
some of the earthen dams
you find. Dams that are now
cement and steel were often
originally earth fill dams and
the fill came from teams of
horses, making trip after trip
pulling a fresno filled with
dirt from the borrow pit to
the dam site. The borrow
pit alongside a road was
probably dug by a horse
drawn fresno as well.
In my family pictures, I
have one of my dad, about
ten years old, holding the
lines of his team, alongside a
dozen or so other teams and
drivers, all of whom were
building a dam entirely of
horse and man power. I
guess manpower is often
underestimated, too.

Timothy Egan will visit
Estes Park for a free speak-
ing event, as well as a VIP
meet-and-greet for donors.
Full program details will be
announced with a newslet-
ter to be distributed
year of celebration, which
begins in September.
This years project will
feature an opening recep-
tion, discussions, storytell-
ing, films, and more. The
grand event of the season
will take place on Tuesday,
can conservation move-
ment, including its champi-
oning by larger-than-life
Theodore Roosevelt and
his pioneering chief forest-
er Gifford Pinchot. Historic
figures including legendary
John Muir, the tenacious
Ed Pulaski, and female
homesteader Pinkie Adair
all provide a richness of
characters throughout.
This years book finalists
were chosen as being out-
standing works in nature
writing, and readers are
encouraged to reflect upon

A
fter many weeks
of suspense, the
title in the Estes
Valley Librarys
fourth annual One Book
One Valley project has been
announced. Last Monday,
Mayor Bill Pinkham joined
staff from the Estes Valley
Library to herald in this
falls featured book: The
Big Burn: Teddy Roosevelt
and the Fire that Saved
America. Its author, Timo-
thy Egan is a New York
Times bestselling writer, a
National Book Award Win-
ner, and a recipient of the
Pulitzer Prize.
The selection came as the
result of a community vote
held last spring to choose
among five book finalists.
Since its publication, The
Big Burn has earned an
outpouring of praise. A
masterwork in every
sense, said the Christian
Science Monitor. Publish-
ers Weekly called it a tre-
mendous tale, noting that
Egan brings a touching
humanity to this story of
valor and cowardice in the
face of a national catastro-
phe, paying respectful
attention to Roosevelts
grand dream of conserva-
tion and of an America for
the little man.
The book builds its narra-
tive around the dramatic
events of a ferocious wild-
fire battering through for-
ests in Washington, Idaho
and Montana in August of
1910. Yet its larger story
encompasses the backdrop
of the burgeoning Ameri-
