Brooks Cenex Co-op being built
A new Brooks Cenex store is being built in Brooks. The
store, which will include gas pumps, a convenience store,
off-sale and full deli, will also be the main headquarters for
the Cenex-Red Lake County Cooperative Inc. The 6,200-foot
building also includes a small meeting room and is being
built on the site of the Third Base Liquor Lounge and
Restaurant that was torn down. Cenex is planning to tie
into a bit of the history of the Third Base. Because of the
age of the fuel tanks and the condition of the current Cenex
building, the board of directors for the Co-op decided to
build new. The general contractor on the project is Wesmor
Inc. The store is expected to open in November.

Love and tattoos
by David Hill
Editor
When people of a cer-
tain age think of someone
who has a tattoo, the first
thing that often comes to
mind is of a biker, a gang
member, a prisoner, a sailor
or rebellious teen.
But opinions of tattoos -
and people with tattoos - is
quickly changing. People get
tattoos for many different
reasons. According to one
source, the top two reasons
people get tattoos today
include indentifying them-
selves and honoring loved
ones.
Six sisters from Thief
River Falls recently had
matching tattoos placed on
their forearms and for many
interesting reasons.
There were eight children
in the Harold and Betty
Swanson family, but a couple
of tragedies took the two
brothers, Mike and Mark,
leaving the six sisters
always feeling that loss.
Eight years ago they lost
their father, and two years
later they lost their mom.
The sisters - Susan Buhl,
Julie Sullivan, Wendy
Goddard, Corlynne Jorde,
Jodell Usitalo, and Nancy
Thompson - have always
been close. Today, even
though years and miles sep-
arate them, they find a way
to get together every year.
They also hold frequent
reunions. In fact, they
recently held a family
reunion, which was attended
by 55 members of the family.
Susan said Nancy, the
youngest, came up with the
idea to all get a tattoo.
Susan said their parents
probably wouldnt have said
anything. Our parents
always let us be our own per-
son.
The six sisters, now rang-
ing in age between 50 and
64, met in June in Phoenix,
Ariz., for Nancys 50th birth-
day. They found a place that

Making Gracies

Gracie Woods, 15, has a
typical father-daughter rela-
tionship with her dad, Todd.
He cant understand her
infatuation with clothing,
particularly certain pairs of
jeans. During a conversation
Wednesday, the two of them
exchanged glances when
talk turned to the jeans and
where they will go during
the remodeling process.
Thief River Falls, the sur-
rounding communities and
elsewhere have gathered to
support Gracie and her fam-
ily. Theyre helping remodel
her bedroom, a bathroom
and the downstairs living
room at her Thief River
Falls home.
Its overwhelming. Were
all kind of numb right now,
Todd said about the amount
of community support.
Gracie was diagnosed
with osteogenic sarcoma in
July 2011. The bone cancer
affected her right femur. In
May 2013, cancer was found
in her lungs, and more can-
cer spots were found there
10 months later. In July, it
was discovered that the radi-
ation wasnt working. Gracie
decided to spend the rest of
her time with family and
friends without feeling the
effects of chemotherapy.
Earlier this year, Allie
Enge approached Gracie and
her parents, Todd and
DeAnna, about redoing

When Pat Gerszewski
added a 33-site campground
to Petro Pumper in 2007, he
envisioned having an
attraction to accompany the
campground. The lack of a
miniature golf course in
Thief River Falls made the
Falls Stay n Play 18-hole
mini golf course an obvious
choice and in 2011, it became
a reality.
Last fall, about two years
after the golf course was
opened to the public,
Gerszewski began work on
his next endeavor a go-
kart track, which officially
opened for business Friday,
Aug. 1.
Gerszewski began work
on the 1,100-foot go-kart
track last fall, with concrete
being poured this spring. He
originally planned to have
the track operational by the
July 4 weekend, but exces-
sive rains in the spring dras-
tically restricted progress on
the track.
We lost a lot of time on
the rain, Gerszewski said.

NWMHC welcomes Pedersen

Starting Tuesday, Sept. 2,
Northwestern Mental
Health Center Inc. will wel-
come Dr. Heather Pedersen,
LP, Ph.D., neuropsycholo-
gist, to its outpatient staff.
Pedersen will provide
comprehen-
sive evalua-
tions for
adolescents
and adults
with a vari-
ety of devel-
opment al ,
l e a r n i n g ,
me d i c a l ,
neurol ogi -
cal, emo-
tional, and
behavioral difficulties.
Pedersen has specialized
training in the evaluation of
traumatic brain injury,
stroke, seizure disorders,
attention deficit/hyperactivi-
ty disorder, learning disor-
ders, substance abuse, mul-
tiple sclerosis, and demen-
tia, as well as other neu-
ropsychiatric and medical
disorders. Pedersens office
is located in Crookston, MN.
Neuropsychology is a sub-
specialty within psychology
that focuses on brain-behav-
ior relationships. A neu-
ropsychologist is a licensed
psychologist who has under-
gone additional training to
develop expertise in how dif-
ferent cognitive abilities and
behaviors are related to
brain functioning. Any
injury, disease or disorder
that impacts the brain can
lead to changes in behavior
and cognition. Possible rea-
sons for referral to a neu-
ropsychologist include:
assessment of cognitive
strengths or weaknesses;
identification of cognitive
dysfunction following cer-
tain medical diagnoses such
as stroke, seizure disorder,
concussion, or dementia;
characterizing learning or
attentional difficulties in
adolescents or adults; docu-
mentation of brain function
over time, in the case of
chronic medical conditions,
such as multiple sclerosis or
neurofibromatosis; diagnos-
tic clarification in the con-
text of comorbid psychiatric
and/or substance abuse dis-
orders.
What this means for resi-
dents of the communities
served by NWMC is access
to a subspecialty service
that is hard to find without
having to drive for hours.
Through relationships the
NWMHC has with various
healthcare facilities, schools
and human service agencies
across the region, Pedersen
will be available to patients
in a variety of ways to help
minimize the travel and
financial burden. In addi-
tion, Pedersen will work
with the patient, caregivers
and other supports to devel-
op a plan based on the eval-
uation results that will help
the patient be successful.
Originally from
California, Pedersen gradu-
ated with a bachelors
degree from California State
University, Fresno. She
moved to Minnesota and
obtained her M.A. and Ph.D.
degrees from the University
of North Dakota in clinical
psychology. She is a licensed
psychologist in the state of
Minnesota who completed
focused training in neu-
ropsychology during her
one-year pre-doctoral intern-
ship and two-year postdoc-
toral fellowship while
employed within the
Veterans Affairs Medical
System.
Pedersen seeks to provide
detailed, comprehensive rec-
ommendations for both
clients and providers, as
appropriate.
NWMHC serves residents
of Kittson, Mahnomen,
Marshall Norman, Polk and
Red Lake counties.

North Valley Health
Center in Warren is set to
offer ePharmacy services at
the new facility this month.
ePharmacy is part of
Avera eCARE, a suite of
innovative technology appli-
cations developed to improve
patient safety and support
the rural health care work-
force. This innovative serv-
ice provides rural hospitals
around-the-clock access to
hospital-trained pharma-
cists, making it possible for
every medication order to be
reviewed and approved prior
to administration to
patients.
These hospital-trained
pharmacists work from a
central hub in Sioux Falls,
SD, 24 hours per day, seven
days per week. ePharmacy
has brought an unprece-
dented level of safety to
patients at rural hospitals.
Currently, the Warren
Pharmacy provides medica-
tions and prescription
review for the facility. This
local business will continue
in that capacity. The pur-
pose of the ePharmacy proj-
ect is to provide review when
the Warren Pharmacy is not
open.
Some of the ways
ePharmacy supports patient
care in the local community
include:
Improved patient safety
through a decrease in med-
ication errors and adverse
drug events
Pharmacist resources
available for medication con-
sults 24/7
Better medication man-
agement for complex
patients
Up-to-date medication
profiles necessary for elec-
tronic medication adminis-
tration records and bedside
medication verification.
ePharmacy gives us the
ability to enhance the level
of health care in our commu-
nity, said Ashley King,
NVHC chief executive offi-
cer. It elevates the level of
care that we can give our
patients, and also raises the
level of support for our
providers and nurses.

DEATH NOTICES
Anhydrous
ammonia leak
occurs in TRF
Anhydrous ammonia
leaked early Friday morning
from Northern Pride in
Thief River Falls. It was
unknown if anyone was
transported by ambulance
from the scene and neigh-
borhood.
The Thief River Falls
Fire Department was dis-
patched to the turkey plant
at 3:26 a.m. Friday. The fire
department indicated that
one or more nearby resi-
dents reported trouble
breathing, alerting law
enforcement to the problem.
By the time firefighters
arrived at the scene,
Northern Pride employees
had already pushed the
emergency shutdown but-
ton. The fire department
said Northern Pride was
aware of the problem and
were in the process of fixing
it, when a valve failed and
leaked anhydrous ammonia.
Firefighters wearing
breathing apparatus went
door-to-door to check on
nearby residents. They were
on the scene for about two-
and-a-half hours, spraying
water in the area to dissi-
pate the anhydrous ammo-
nia. Given the high humidi-
ty and lack of wind, it had
been settling in areas.

EDITORIAL OPINIONS
Editorial opinion published under this head ing is intended to stimu-
late thinking and discussion among our readers. Unless speci fied
other wise, the editorials are written by Editor Dave Hill and do not
represent opinion of other staff members. Opinions in items from
other publications may not coincide with the editors own views but
are offered for their general interest.
Do you know who
your neighbors are?
Evaluations of neighborhood watch
programs disagree as to whether they
are successful in reducing crime. A
2008 U.S. Justice Department meta-
analysis found that citizen policing
programs were associated with signifi-
cant reductions in crime, and that
there was insufficient data to justify
definitive conclusions about why such
programs are associated with positive
programs. Another report prepared for
Congress by the National Institute of
Justice and the University of Maryland
in 2002, concluded that community
policing programs are ineffective - pri-
marily because they arent found in
areas with the highest crime rates and
that areas where they are located gen-
erally have little crime to begin with.
The value of neighborhood watch
programs isnt just that they prevent
crime, but that they also help citizens
get to know their neighbors. I remem-
ber my parents talking about the days
when all of their neighbors would hold
a party for the adults and carnival for
the kids. The street would be blocked
off and the neighbors would gather for
fun and a potluck dinner.
Can you name your neighbors? We
rarely see block parties happening any-
more, and whether we want to or not,
many of us dont seem interested in
knowing who our neighbors are. Thats
a shame because there are a lot of ben-
efits to knowing your neighbors - safe-
ty, understanding, assistance, building
trust and lasting friendships, to name
a few.
Its that time of the year in north-
western Minnesota when area commu-
nities are scheduling a National Night
Out or Night to Unite. The purpose of
these events is to encourage area resi-
dents to become familiar with their
local law enforcement and other city
officials - establish personal connec-
tions and trust. Local officials want cit-
izens to know that if they have a ques-
tion or need, help they can approach
them. A friendly environment like
National Night Out encourages that
kind of relationship to begin to develop.
Most contacts between law enforce-
ment and citizens take place when peo-
ple are in trouble - someones being
pulled over for speeding, driving under
the influence, or when officers are
responding to a report of domestic vio-
lence, theft or burglary or much
worse. So the connection isnt always
when were at our best.
Many of us have established a wall
between citizens and local officials, and
it has created a them vs. us mentality.
We dont know our neighbors. We dont
know who our police officers are. We
dont know who picks up our garbage.
We dont know our utility officials and
dont know who to call when the power
goes out, let alone report a crime. And
when something happens, is it any
wonder that we feel alone and that
the world is against us. Sometimes I
wonder if criminals have figured that
out. It certainly makes us easier tar-
gets if they believe well never report a
crime or a problem.
National Night Out and Night to
Unite are about breaking down those
barriers or walls in a safe and fun
atmosphere. It allows the public to get
to know their local law enforcement
and city officials - put a face with a
name, discover that they are much
more than a badge or uniform, and that
they have friends and families just like
you. Sometimes getting to know these
people can mean all the difference.
It isnt you against the world. Police
officers and city employees arent hired
to make your life difficult; their job and
purpose is to serve you. Shouldnt you
get to know them?

The Broken Chain
We little knew that day,
God was going to call your name.
In life we loved you dearly,
In death, we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you.
You did not go alone.
For part of us went with you,
The day God called you home.
You left us beautiful memories,
Your love is still our guide.
And although we cannot see you,
You are always at our side.
Our family chain is broken,
And nothing seems the same,
But as God calls us one by one,
The chain will link again.

The daughters of Harold and Betty Swanson of Thief River
Falls recently celebrated a sisters 50th birthday by getting
tattoos. The tattoos stand for the eight children born into
the family, the infinite love they have for each other, and
the love they have for two brothers who have passed
away. The sisters are Susan Buhl, Julie Sullivan, Wendy
Goddard, Corlynne Jorde, Jodell Usitalo, and Nancy
Thompson. (Submitted)
Sisters bond with tattoo/Continued
(Continued from Page 1)
looked very professional -
though Susan said there
were a lot of people there
who had a lot of piercings
and tattoos.
They had also decided on
a symbol after looking at
options on Pinterest and dis-
cussing it. They settled on a
figure eight that could also
be the infinity symbol - eight
for the eight kids and an
infinity symbol for the infi-
nite love and connection
they share. The word
Sisters is in the middle of
the figure eight and lines
from the eight and word
Sisters form two hearts -
one at each end of the figure,
one for each of their broth-
ers.
Susan said they had
decided to have them all
done at once so that they
would be identical. They also
had it done at the same time
so that no one could back out
at the last moment. Susan
said Julie was the most
apprehensive so they made
her go first. The most diffi-
cult decision they had to
make regarding the tattoo
was where on their bodies
they wanted to place it, but
they finally settled on their
forearms.
They didnt have any liq-
uid courage before they got
the tattoo, but Susan said it
did require a pep talk.
Susan said it hurt a little
at first, but afterwards she
said it didnt hurt at all.
Because it sits on their
forearms its not like they
can hide it, especially during
the summer months.
Susan said they get a lot
of comments about the tat-
too. She said her friends
think its pretty cool, espe-
cially when they hear the
story.
Susan said their kids all
thought it was OK, too. She
added her daughter now
wants to get a tattoo with
her, though Susan has no
plans for another one. She
added that she certainly has
no plans for body piercings!
According to
Smithsonian.com, humans
have marked their bodies
with tattoos for thousands of
years. These permanent
designs - sometimes plain,
sometimes elaborate, always
personal - have served as
amulets, status symbols,
declarations of love, signs of
religious beliefs, adorn-
ments and even forms of
punishment.
For a long time, the earli-
est known examples were
from the ancient Egyptians.
Tattoos were present on sev-
eral female mummies dated
to around 2000 B.C. Around
1991, however, the remains
of a man from the area of the
Italian-Austrian border was
found. Tattoos on his body
puts the art of tattooing
back to around 5,200 years
ago.

These recipes are great
for quick and easy meals on
hot August day and most of
them are filled with good
veggies that are available
now let the deli do the
work and you can just put
things together in a hurry.

This will make one quick

supper. Pick up a couple of
those ready-made salads at
the deli when you buy your
very thinly sliced meat and
you have a great meal for a
hot day. Try using both
meats, or other favorite
tasty deli meats in these
sandwiches too:
ITALIAN SUBS
1 loaf (8 ounces) French
bread
6 slices mozzarella cheese
(divided)
12 thin slices fully cooked
ham or turkey
1 medium tomato, thinly
sliced
1 tablespoon cooking oil
2 teaspoons cider or red
wine vinegar
2-1/2 teaspoons dried basil
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1/8 teaspoon dried rose-
mary, crushed
Cut bread in half hori-
zontally. Set top aside.
Place 3 slices of cheese on
bottom half; layer with ham
and tomato. Combine oil,
vinegar, basil, pepper and
rosemary. Drizzle over
tomato.
Top with remaining
cheese and broil 4 inches
from heat for 2-3 minutes,
or until cheese is melted.
Replace bread top, press
down gently, cut into 4
pieces and serve right away.
So easy.

This is a great ending to

a quick meal, and, of course,

Wilson's Automatic
Sprinkler
I collect old stuff; mostly
because it reminds me of my
youth. Sometimes, my col-
lections begin because the
focus of the collection is just
so darn cool. I recently
began a collection because of
the coolness factor.
I like mechanical things. I
like to understand what I
use in my daily life and so
many things are now com-
puterized and beyond my
comprehension. Mechanical
things can be taken apart
and understood one system
at a time, which is comfort-
ing to me.
The Automatic Traveling
Sprinkler was born in 1930
from the mind of John
Wilson. Wilson was the engi-
neer, and custodian, who
invented a small tractor that
was driven by water as it
sprinkled the lawn. Wilson
used the invention to water
the lawn at the high school
where he worked as a jani-
tor. The tractor was made
with a large convex front
tire, which straddled a gar-
den hose and would follow
any path laid out by the
placement of the hose. The
Wilson Automotive
Sprinkler Company
planned a production start
in North Platte, Neb., some-
time in the 1940s, but World
War II needed most of the
nations metal, so production
could not begin in earnest.
John Wilson died in 1946. A
company named National
Manufacturing picked up
Wilsons patent after it
expired in 1960 and has
since made a sprinkler simi-
lar to Wilsons creation.
I got my traveling sprin-
kler from an Internet auc-
tion site. I have wanted one
of these traveling sprinklers
for years, but they are often
expensive. The reason for
the expense has many
facets. First off, there are
collectors who want to add
traveling sprinklers to their
collection. Secondly, the
company is still in existence
and making the sprinklers
and parts, so these sprin-
klers are still useable.
Thirdly, the sprinklers are
about 32 pounds of steel and
toughness, so they are worth
more than the lighter plastic
versions, which are sold cur-
rently. I feel I paid about the
right money for mine, which
made me happy.
Now about that coolness
factor; this little traveling
sprinkler looks like an old
steam tractor or maybe a
Rumely Oil Pull. I like the
chunkiness of the main
structure and the unflinch-
ing use of steel and heft in a
time when the cost of ship-
ping didnt drive every deci-
sion.
This little sprinkler was
made to last and give years
of service. I would guess it
was built more for the urban
resident than for rural fami-
lies as most people on the
farm probably focused more
on crop production than
their lawn. However, the
shape, form and design
remind me of a tractor made
to be delivered to a farm
with a requirement for min-
imal service.
My particular model is
the A-5, which appears to be
the base model. It is current-
ly advertised as the perfect
size for the average home-
owner, but I just bought it
for show. I may test it but
only for my own curiosity. I
didnt purchase Wilsons
automatic sprinkler to
increase our lawns rate of
growth; it just makes me
feel good to look at it.
This is a picture of the Automatic Traveling Sprinkler that I
recently purchased for my collection. (Submitted)

TRF woman has
charges pending
for two DWIs in
one day
A Thief River Falls
woman has charges pending
after she was stopped twice
in one day for allegedly driv-
ing while impaired Tuesday,
July 29 in the city of Thief
River Falls.
Destiny Danae Kearney,
25, Thief River Falls, has
charges pending for two
counts of fourth degree driv-
ing while impaired.
The first incident was
reported to police at 8 a.m. A
caller reported that a vehi-
cle was allegedly all over
the road in the 1500 block
of U.S. Hwy. 59 S.E.
Kearney was arrested and
released to a sober individ-
ual after that incident.
The second incident was
reported to police at 5:04
p.m. A caller reported that a
vehicle was swerving all
over the road in the 1700
block of U.S. Hwy. 59 S.E.
Kearney was arrested.
Looking for your
stray animal?
Marshall County resi-
dents looking for their lost
animals are reminded that
their animals may have
been transported to one of
two animal shelters.
Depending upon where
the stray animals are found
in Marshall County and the
amount of available space at
the shelters, the sheriff s
office transports them to
either Crookston or Grand
Forks, N.D. The stray ani-
mals are usually transport-
ed to the Humane Society of
Polk County, 720 E. Robert
St., Crookston, or the Circle
of Friends Humane Society,
4375 N. Washington St.,
Grand Forks, N.D. Sheriff
John Novacek said stray
animals are occasionally
transported to the
Pennington County
Humane Society in Thief
River Falls.
A pair of Thief River Falls
hockey players have been
selected to play in the 2014
Upper Midwest High School
Elite League.
Junior forward Ethan
Johnson and sophomore
defenseman Brendan Bushy
will skate for Team Great
Plains in the fall program
that was developed as a way
to get players to finish their
prep hockey careers before
heading to the Junior ranks.
A year ago, three Thief
River Falls seniors goalie
Tanner Holmes, defenseman
Adam Pancoast and forward
Isak Bergland played for
Team Great Plains prior to
the start of the high school
hockey season.
Upper Midwest High
School Elite League tryouts
were held July 13 in New
Hope. Selected players will
report Aug. 20-30 for train-
ing camp in Blaine.
Teams play 21 games over
a seven-week span that
begins Sept. 6-7. Featuring
outstate skaters, Team
Great Plains and Team
North will play three games
each weekend. Staffed with
metro-area products, Team
Northeast, Northwest,
Southwest and Southeast
will play some midweek
games.
Games for Team Great
Plains will be played in New
Hope, Grand Rapids, Blaine,
Moorhead and Duluth.
The schedule wraps up
with the league playoffs Oct.
24-26 in New Hope.
Joining the two Prowlers
as Section 8A representa-
tives in the 2014 Upper
Midwest Elite League pro-
gram will be senior forward
Dixon Bowen, along with
junior forwards Grant Loven
and Tanner Tweten, East
Grand Forks; senior
defenseman Luke Jaycox,
plus senior forwards Kobe
Roth and Jared Bethune,
Warroad; junior forward
Doug Larson, Crookston;
and junior forward Jon
Richards, Detroit Lakes.
The East Grand Forks trio
will play for Team North; the
others are on the Team
Great Plains roster.
North Dakota and
Wisconsin are also repre-
sented in the league that
was designed to combat the
departure of high school
players to the Junior pro-
grams a high-level supple-
ment to high school hockey.
In theory, the weekend
schedules allow Upper
Midwest High School Elite
League players to continue
their high school fall sports
careers while getting a head-
start on the hockey season.
At the end of the league
schedule, 40 players will be
selected for one of the two
Minnesota teams that will
complete in the Bauer
National Invitational tour-
nament.

ed a check from Thief River Falls Sports
Boosters Club president Rick Reierson
during distribution of funds from the
19th annual Sports Boosters golf tour-
nament. Twenty-eight five-person
teams took part in the event that bene-
fits programs at Northland Community
and Technical College and in School
District 564.

Bergland, Marolt to
play for BSU squad
Thief River Falls Emily
Bergland and Sylvia Marolt
will continue their hockey
careers at Bemidji State
University starting with the
2015-16 school year.
Mike Biermaier, activities
director for School District
564, reported Wednesday
that the two Prowlers, who
will be high school seniors
this year, have made verbal
commitments to play at
BSU, where Jim Scanlan
was recently named the
Beavers new womens head
hockey coach.
Scanlan takes over the
Bemidji program after lead-
ing East Grand Forks to the
Minnesota Class A state
high school hockey tourna-
ment last winter. The Green
Wave emerged a 2-1 double-
overtime winner over Thief
River Falls in the Section 8A
finals.
Both forwards, Bergland
and Marolt have been fix-
tures in the Prowlers line-
up for years. As juniors,
Bergland scored 28 goals
and picked up 23 assists for
51 points while Marolt
scored 14 times and had 18
assists for 32 points.
After back-to-back 19-win
seasons, Thief River Falls
put together a 24-2 cam-
paign in 2013-14 when the
Prowlers carried the No. 1
ranking in Class A heading
into tournament play.
Northland Community and Technical
College athletic coordinator Paul
Peterson (left) was presented with a
check from Thief River Falls Sports
Boosters Club president Rick Reierson.
The funds, designed to supplement the
Pioneers athletic programs, was a por-
tion of the money raised during the
2014 Sports Boosters golf tournament.
The event was held June 13 at the Thief
River Golf Club.

WOMENS SOFTBALL
TRF MENS SOFTBALL
by Mike Lundgren,
Sports Editor
Kareem Joseph really
likes playing football. Five
years ago he came to Thief
River Falls from the Virgin
Islands to play at Northland
Community and Technical
College, where his second
season with the Pioneers
was cut short by a knee
injury.
Still living in the area,
but out of football for three
years, Joseph jumped at the
opportunity to play again
when he joined the first-year
Tri-City North Stars semi-
pro team based in Grand
Forks, N.D.
Joseph, who stopped by
The Times office in Thief
River Falls to promote the
team, said putting the pads
back on has made life that
much more enjoyable.
Part of the Midwest
Premier Football League,
the Tri-City North Stars,
started the 2014 season 5-0
and earned a No. 20 ranking
on a national semi-pro foot-
ball website.
With connections in
Grand Forks, East Grand
Forks and Crookston, the
North Stars use Tri-City as
its moniker.
Players, including some
Grand Forks Air Force Base
personnel, come from across
the United States, from
Alaska to Florida, and in
Josephs case - the Virgin
Islands. Some are college-
age, while others are thirty-
something. Theres even a
grandfather on the roster,
pointed out Joseph, who
said, They come together to
play the game they love so
much. It helps to be unde-
feated, but its about enjoy-
ing the game and coming
together as a family.
There are over 1,000
teams in 60 leagues across
the United States that are
classified as semi-pro, devel-
opment, senior adult or sen-
ior amateur operations.
Players generally have a
high school and/or college
football background. Many
purchase their own equip-
ment and cover their own
expenses for transportation,
lodging and meals.
The North Stars opened
the season with wins over
the Sioux Falls (S.D.)
Stallions 30-16, North Shore
(Duluth) Grizzlies 48-0,
Bismarck Wolves 38-6,
Rapid City (S.D.) Raptors
44-0 and the Grizzlies again,
48-6.
Playing 4 p.m. Saturday
games at Cushman Field in
Grand Forks, the North
Stars have two remaining
home games: Aug. 2 vs. the
Nebraska Lawdawgs and
Aug. 16 against the Minot
Oilers.
League playoffs will
include Sept. 6 semifinals
and Sept. 13 finals.
Joseph extends an invita-
tion to the public to stop by
Cushman Field near Red
River High School check out
the semi-pro version of the
game that he has embraced.
The support from the fans
makes it even more enjoy-
able to play, he said.
Remaining unbeaten and
generating a fan base would
certainly add to an already
memorable experience for
Joseph and his new team-
mates.
Tickets are $10 for adults
and $5 for children.

Paul Bunyan State Trail extended from Bemidji to Brainerd area
Construction of a six-mile
paved trail segment connect-
ing the Paul Bunyan State
Trail to Crow Wing State
Park in Brainerd is now
complete and open to the
public, according to the
Minnesota Department of
Natural Resources Parks
and Trails Division.
The completion of this
segment brings the total
length of the trail to 115
miles, not including a couple
of short on-road connections
through the cities of Baxter
and Bemidji. Extending all
the way to Lake Bemidji
State Park north of Bemidji,
it is the longest of
Minnesotas 25 state trails
and the longest continuously
paved rail-trail in the coun-
try.
This new segment is a
great addition to the
Minnesota state park and
trail system, said Andrew
Korsberg, state trail pro-
gram coordinator for the
DNR. It connects the first
class outdoor recreation
opportunities of the state
park to the Brainerd and
Baxter communities via
state trail.
Hunters can target
Canada geese in a
special Aug. hunt
Hunters can harvest
Canada geese in west-cen-
tral Minnesota from
Saturday, Aug. 9, through
Sunday, Aug. 24, the
Department of Natural
Resources said.
Individual hunters are
allowed to shoot up to 10
Canada geese per day, but
there is no limit to the num-
ber of Canada geese a
hunter can possess.
The states Canada
goose population remains
high, and more goslings
hatched this year than last,
said Steve Cordts, water-
fowl specialist for the DNR.
In the western portion of
the state, large numbers of
Canada geese continue to
damage crops. The August
management action is one
way to control goose num-
bers.
The August goose harvest
will open only in the inten-
sive harvest zone in west-
central Minnesota, with
shooting hours from a half-
hour before sunrise to a
half-hour after sunset. A
small game hunting license,
special goose permit and
state waterfowl stamp are
required. A federal water-
fowl stamp is not needed;
however, it is needed to
hunt geese and other water-
fowl beginning in
September.
This is the second year
we have held an August
goose management action,
Cordts said. Last August,
hunters harvested about
25,000 Canada geese.
Hunter success is dependent
on weather, progress of
small grain harvest and
other factors.
The DNR in August will
announce details of fall
waterfowl seasons, includ-
ing the September Canada
goose season that runs from
Saturday, Sept. 6, through
Monday, Sept. 22, and the
regular Canada goose sea-
sons that tentatively begin
Saturday, Sept. 27.
Now is the time to
take hunter safety
education classes
With the fall hunting sea-
sons just around the corner,
the Minnesota Department
of Natural Resources is urg-
ing hunters to sign up now
for a hunter education class.
Though classes are held
throughout the year, their
numbers peak in the sum-
mer and early fall, said
Capt. Mike Hammer, DNR
Enforcement Division edu-
cation program coordinator.
So now is the time to sign
up and complete a course,
because once the hunting
season gets rolling, it might
be too late.
Besides ensuring the
ability to hunt this year,
taking the class sooner
rather than later means
more time for scouting hunt-
ing locations, sighting-in
rifles, practicing shotgun
skills and securing permis-
sion to hunt on private
lands.
Minnesota hunters born
after Dec. 31, 1979, must
take a DNR hunter educa-
tion firearms safety training
course and receive a certifi-
cate of completion before
buying a license for big or
small game.
Classes are taught by
DNR certified volunteers in
their local communities.
Students, depending on
their age, have a few options
to become certified.
Regardless of which option
they choose the course pro-
vides them with basic safe
firearms handling skills,
wildlife identification, out-
door skills and responsibili-
ty that accompanies hunt-
ing and firearms use.
Classes fill-up fast. Find
a class http://www.dnr.state.
mn.us/safety/firearms/index
.html, or call 888-646-6367.

Go-kart track
opens in TRF/Continued
Falls Stay n Plays new go-kart track officially opened Friday. There is no minimum
age to utilize the go-karts, but drivers must be at least 46 inches tall. Children
under 46 inches can ride with an adult in a double car.
(Continued from Page 1)
Were about a month
behind schedule.
The longest step in the
construction process is the
installation of the rails that
line the inside and outside of
the track. The rails are eight
inches tall and made of
5/8ths-inch-thick steel that
comes in 20-foot sections.
Overall, Gerszewski esti-
mates the combined weight
of the side rails to total
55,000 pounds.
Reinforcing the steel side
rails are shock-absorbing
recycled tires that have been
bolted into the concrete. We
cleaned out the local tire
shops, Gerszewski joked.
The track and side rails
were functionally complete
before Thursday nights offi-
cial sponsor night and
Fridays official opening to
the public, but there is still
some work to be done.
Gerszewski plans to paint
the side rails and stripe the
track after the track closes
for the season.
The track will feature a
total of 22 gas-powered cars,
all with Thief River Falls-
based sponsors. Each car
features a unique paint
scheme with logos of the
sponsor. Graphic work was
done by Custom Stripes out
of Grand Forks, N.D.,
Sandahl Signs, Fast
GraphiX and Arctic Cat,
which did its own graphics.
Seven of the 22 cars are
double cars that are rated
for 270 pounds and can com-
fortably fit an adult and
child. The other 15 cars are
single-passenger cars and
are also rated for 270
pounds.
Gerszewski said the car
manufacturer, J&J
Amusements of Salem, Ore.,
designed the initial track
blueprints. Gerszewski gave
them the dimensions of the
area.
After the initial design
was returned, Gerszewski
made some modifications,
such as taking out some
ovals and adding more right
turns, steeper banks and
more hills. J&J
Amusements provided blue-
prints with with more spe-
cific elevation and angles.
We tested the dirt track
before it was paved to see if
we liked all the curves,
Gerszewski said. It was
hard to tell one way or
another, because the cars
were spinning quite a bit in
the dirt.
At 1,100 feet, its about
300 feet longer than the
average go-kart track. Its
going to be an aggressive
track a lot of tight corners
but also some nice straight
aways, Gerszewski said.
Falls Stay n Play will
charge $5 per go-kart ride.
Gerszewski said the length
of race heats hasnt been
finalized yet but right now
he plans to start with four to
five minutes per ride.
Riders must be at least 46
inches tall to drive a go-kart
at Falls Stay n Play. Anyone
under 46 inches can ride for
free with a paid adult.
Gerszewski noted that
Falls Stay n Plays minia-
ture golf course and go-kart
track are open to the public.
A lot of people think this is
just for the campground.
Everyones welcome, he
said.
Falls Stay n Play minia-
ture golf course offers group
and senior rates. Both the
mini golf and go-kart track
will be open daily from 11
a.m. to 11 p.m.
Campground upgrades
Falls Stay n Play is also
in the process of upgrading
its campsites. The camp-
ground, which first opened
in 2007, will see its capacity
more than double with the
addition of 35 full service
campsites.
Once the new campsites
are complete, Falls Stay n
Play will offer a total of 68
campsites with water, sewer
and 50-amp electrical serv-
ice. Campsites also include
cable TV and Wi-Fi.
Gracies dream room/Continued
(Continued from Page 1)
Gracies room. She had
become further acquainted
with the Woods family
thanks to a mutual friend,
the late Ian Alves. The
Horace, N.D., teenager had
received medical care at the
Mayo Clinic at the same
time as Allies daughter,
Hannah, and at the Roger
Maris Cancer Center at the
same time as Gracie.
When Hannah was
undergoing medical care, a
relative redid Hannahs bed-
room. Allie realized the posi-
tive impact it had on
Hannah and wanted to do
the same for Gracie.
At the time of Allies offer,
Gracie was still undergoing
treatment. Todd said they
realized the urgency of giv-
ing Gracie her dream bed-
room three weeks ago.
Todd thought the project
would include new bedding,
new curtains, a TV and
maybe something from The
Shed, a Thief River Falls
business that Allie owns.
It was the community
that made it what it is,
Todd said.
Allie initially wanted to
raise $5,500 to renovate
Gracies bedroom. Exceeding
expectations, Allies
GoFundMe campaign raised
$20,000 as of Thursday
morning. Gracie initially
wanted any extra money to
paint the bathroom near her
bedroom. She will be getting
that and more. The bath-
room will be handicapped-
accessible. She also added
the downstairs living room
to the project as a surprise
for her parents.
Gracie doesnt know what
Allie and her crew are plan-
ning. All she knows is that
she will receive a handi-
capped-accessible bathroom,
twinkly lights and a 55-inch
TV with surround sound.
Gracies friend Kendra
Sparby has already imag-
ined how loud Gracie will
tune the surround sound.
She knows how loud Gracie
likes to tune her Beats Pill
while Kendra is sleeping.
The TV was delivered
Wednesday and immediately
installed on brackets on a
newly-painted wall.
Allie asked Gracie a
bunch of questions about
what she wanted in her
room. Todd has been told the
plans, but he has been
sworn to secrecy. Gracie said
her dad has been known to
keep secrets unless it
involves trying to transport
a stubborn Gracie to an
interview with a Fargo,
N.D., radio station. In order
to convince her to go, he was
forced to tell her that she
was going to receive a sur-
prise visit from Taylor Swift.
Volunteers helping with
the renovation have also
been told to keep the plans a
secret and to not post pic-
tures on social media. Allie
wants Gracie to be surprised
when she arrives home.
While her room is being
renovated, Gracie will spend
time in Detroit Lakes with
her two older sisters, Paige
and Taylor. On their way
back late Sunday afternoon,
they will be escorted by law
enforcement starting in Red
Lake County. The escort will
later include Pennington
County law enforcement and
the Thief River Falls Fire
Department. They will trav-
el on Highway 59 and then
turn west onto Greenwood
Street. From there, they will
turn south onto Spruce
Avenue South. The Woods
home is located at 928
Spruce Ave. S.
The public is invited to
support Gracie and her fam-
ily along the route. People
are encouraged to park
along Greenwood Street.
Gracies room will be
revealed Sunday, Aug. 3 at 5
p.m.
Todd described the com-
munity support as incredi-
ble. He started naming
many Thief River Falls busi-
nesses that have helped the
family, but he was afraid he
would forget a business.
Todd, DeAnna and their
family also appreciate the
support theyve received
from others, including ran-
dom strangers. Todd recalled
a Newfolden woman who
dropped off a prayer shawl
for Gracie and a Red Lake
Falls church that provided a
donation. The Woods family
had never met the woman
and doesnt know anyone
affiliated with the church.
The room is the latest
way that the community has
supported and honored
Gracie. She served as the
grand marshal of the
Pennington County Fair
Parade on Wednesday, July
16.
Gracie doesnt like the
spotlight, but shes thankful
for the community support.
Shes excited about seeing
her dream room, and shes
ready to make use of it.
Natural gas line work/Continued
(Continued from Page 1)
said there hasnt been any
problems with the old line,
but it was time to replace it.
The new line will connect to
a newer service line east of
Thief River Falls.
Larson said residents will
not see a lot of construction.
NPL, which received the bid
for the project, will be using
horizontal drilling to install
the pipeline, which means
there wont be a lot of dig-
ging.
The project will utilize
24,500 feet of steel pipe and
5,000 feet of a composite
plastic pipe.
In addition to replacing
the line, Minnesota Energy
Resources will be construct-
ing a new station on MER
property east of Thief River
Falls.
Larson said this will not
mean a rate increase for
local residents, and the proj-
ect also does not represent
an expansion.
Construction is expected
to end in mid to late October.
Mark Borseth, engineer
department supervisor for
the city of Thief River Falls,
and Mike Flaagan,
Pennington County engi-
neer, said the city and coun-
ty are aware of the project
and gave permission for the
company to cross city and
county property.

Dont let a summer getaway open the door to fraudsters
Summer is a great time
for getaways, but while
youre on vacation, criminals
are still hard at work. The
Better Business Bureau of
Minnesota and North
Dakota warns consumers
that they can find them-
selves tripped up by their
own vacation plans if they
dont first take some precau-
tions.
Scammers never stop
thinking, so consumers have
to be looking ahead too, said
Dana Badgerow, president
and chief executive officer of
BBB of Minnesota and
North Dakota. The stakes
are always high.
According to Javelin
Researchs 2014 Identity
Fraud Study, more than 13
million Americans had their
identities stolen last year,
and it cost an average of
$3,500 to fix related prob-
lems. According to the
Federal Trade Commission,
identity theft has surpassed
drug trafficking to become
the most prevalent crime in
the country.
The BBB of Minnesota
and North Dakota advises
consumers to be on the look-
out for fraud in all of its
forms, particularly technolo-
gy-based schemes. Here are
steps people setting out on
vacation can take to protect
themselves:
Keep an eye on your
credit cards When stand-
ing in line at a ticket count-
er or restaurant, dont leave
your credit card in plain
view. Someone can snap a
photo of it over your shoul-
der and use the information
fraudulently.
Copy vital cards and
documents Its a good idea
to keep a record of your cred-
it card, passport and other
important numbers in a
safe place in case your wal-
let or purse is lost or stolen.
Leave identity documents
and cards that you dont
need at home. Make sure
you keep a record of cus-
tomer service numbers in
case you run into a problem
while youre out of town.
Check receipts during
vacation and after When
you get home, go through
your bank and credit card
statements to look for any
unauthorized charges. If
something is amiss, contact
your financial institution
immediately.
Manage your mail and
newspaper delivery online
Before leaving town, visit
www. usps. com/ manage-
your-mail to have your mail
held while youre away. Its a
good idea to do the same
thing with the daily newspa-
per and ask a neighbor to
collect any packages shipped
special delivery.
Be careful with social
media Make sure nobody
in your family announces
that youre going away for
an awesome vacation. If
your account settings are
public, people you might not
want to have that informa-
tion can easily access it.
Always be careful when
posting photos from out of
town for the same reason. Be
sure youre clear about your
privacy settings on your
social media accounts, and
remember, people talk.
There will be plenty of time
to post your fun photos when
youve returned from your
trip.
Dont get skimmed
Always inspect the card
reader slot before using a
standalone ATM or gas
pump. Law enforcement
agencies warn that crimi-
nals can place a fake card
slot cover on these machines
to enable them to capture
customers financial infor-
mation.
If you plan to use your
credit cards while away, it
may also be a good idea to
contact your credit card
provider or bank ahead of
time. In an effort to prevent
losses from fraud, financial
institutions may refuse some
credit card transactions
from out of state if they do
not match your typical
spending pattern. Letting
your credit card provider
and bank know when you
are leaving town - and
returning - and where you
are going might prevent a
hold from being placed on
your credit or debit card.
