GHS STUDENTS SWEEP CONTEST,
EARN SPOTS IN INTERNATIONAL
COMPETITION
Grandview High School junior Landon
Brack and seniors Shelbe Thompson and
Harvey Kendall captured the top three
spots in the 31st Annual Model Bridge
Building Competition, sponsored by the
Western Chapter of the Missouri Society
of Professional Engineers. Brack (first
place), Thompson (second place) and
Kendall (third place) will be honored
Thursday, Feb. 20 during the Engineers
Week luncheon at the Kansas City Marriott
Downtown from 10:30 a.m. - 1:30
p.m. and with their first- and second-
place finish, Brack and Thompson
qualified for the International Model
Bridge Building Competition in Chicago
later this year.
Competing against several schools in the
Kansas City area and western Missouri,
each student, using only basswood sticks
and glue, designed and built their own
model bridge. Once finished, the bridges
were weighted until they collapsed to
determine their structural efficiency- a
mathematical formula where the total
mass supported is divided by the mass of
the bridge. Brack and Thompsons
bridges held the exact same weight, but
because Bracks bridge was just one gram
lighter, his bridge had the highest
structural efficiency.
