Çré Parékñit said: After glorifying the king, Närada Muni (went) to Svargaloka and in a
great assembly of demigods saw Lord Viñëu, . . .

vicitra-kalpa-druma-puñpa-mälä-
vilepa-bhüñä-vasanämåtädyaiù
samarcitaà divyataropacäraiù
sukhopaviñöaà garuòasya påñöhe

vicitra-wonderful; kalpa-druma-of kalpa-druma trees; puñpa-of flowers; mala-with garlands;


lepa-ointments; bhusa- ornaments; vasana-garments; amåta-nectar; adyaiù-beginning with;
samarcitam-worshiped; divyatara-very splendid; upacaraiù-with articles of worship; sukha-
comfortably; upaviñöam-seated; garudasya-of Garuda; prñöhe-on the back.

. . . who was decorated with garlands of kalpa-druma flowers, anointed with fragrant scents,
dressed in beautiful garments and ornaments, served palatable nectar and a host of other very
splendid offerings, and was comfortably seated on Garuòa's back, . . .

Špleasing; priya-affectionate; uktibhiù-with words.

. . . whom Båhaspati and the great sages were glrifying with prayers, whom Aditi was caressing
and pleasing with sweet words, . . .

siddha-vidyadhra-gandharväp-
sarobhibhir vivdhaiù stavaiù
jaya-çabdair vädya-géta-
nåtyaiç ca paritoñitam

siddha-by the Siddhas; vidyadhra-Vidyadharas; gandharva-Gandharvas; apsarobhiù-and


Apsaras; vividhaiù-with various; stavaiù-prayers; jaya-of "victory"; sabdaiù-with sounds; vadya-
with instrumental music; géta-singing; nåtyaiù-dancing; ca-and; paritoñitam-pleased.

. . . who was pleased by the prayers, exlamations of {.sy 168}jaya!", instrumental music,
singing, and dancing of the Siddhas, Vidyädharas, Gandharvas, and Apsaräs, . . .

daityebhyo dadatäà dåòham

carvantaà lélayähåtam

sakraya-to Indra; abhayam-fearlessness; ucca-with high; uktyä-words; daityebhyaù-from the


demons; dadatam-giving; drdham-firm; kértya-by Kirti; arpyamänam-presented; tambulam-
betel-nuts; carvantam-chewing; lélaya-playfully; ahåtam-taken.

. . . who emphatically assured Indra that he need not fear the demons, who gracefully accepted
and chewed the betelnuts Kérti-devé offered, . . .

räjantaà sva-vibhütibhiù

sakra-Indra; ca-also; tasya-of Him; mahätmyam-the glorification; kértayantam-glorifying;


muhu-again; muhu-and again; svami-of the Lord; kåta-performed; upakaran-assistance; ca-also;
varëayantam-describing; mahä-with great; muda- Šhappiness; sahasra-with thousands; nayanaiù-
of eyes; açru-of tears; dhara-streams; varñantam-raining; asane-on the seat; sviye- his own;
nisannam-seated; tat-of Him; parsve-by the side; räjantam-splendidly manifest; sva-own;
vibhütibhiù-with potencies.

. . . whom Indra glorified, raining tears from his thousand eyes as again and again he happily
described how his Lord had come to his aid, and who splendidly sat on His throne, His
transcendental potencies at His side.

gacchantam anugamya tam
sabhäyäm ägataà çakraà
äçasyoväca näradaù

atha-then; viñëum-Lord Viñëu; nija-own; avase-to the residence; gacchantam-going;


anugamya-following; tam-Him; sabhayam-in the assembly; agatam-arrived; sakram-Indra;
asasya-glorifying; uväca-spoke; näradaù-Närada.

Following Lord Viñëu as He departed for His own residence, Närada returned to the
assembly and, praising Indra, said:

kåtänukalpitas tvaà yat


sürya-candra-yamädayaù
taväjïä-kariëaù sarve
loka-päläù pare kim u

çré-näradaù-Çré Närada; uväca-said; kåta-anukalpitaù- glorious; tvam-you; yat-because;


surya-Surya; candra-Candra; yama-and Yama; adayaù-headed by; tava-of you; ajïä-the orders;
karinaù-carrying; sarve-all; loka-of planets; palaù- the rulers; pare-others; kim u-what to speak
of?

Çré Närada said: You are a great leader. Sürya, Candra, Yama, and all the demigods and
rulers of planets, what to speak of others, obey your commands.

Text 10

munayo 'smädåço vaçyäù


çrutayas tväà stuvanti hi
jagadéçatayä yat tvaà
dharmädharma-phala-pradaù

Š munayaù-sages; asmädåçaù-like myself; vasyaù-under your dominion; çrutayaù-the Vedas


Personified; tvam-you; stuvanti-glorify with prayers; hi-indeed; jagat-of the universe; isataya-
because of dominion; yat-because; tvam-you; dharma-of religion; adharama-and irreligion;
phala-the fruits-pradaù-granting.

Sages like myself are under you order. The Vedas praise you as the master of the universe.
You grant the results of pious and impious deeds.

Text 11

aho näräyaëo bhrätä


känéyän yasya sodaraù
sad-dharmaà mänayan yasya
vidadhäty ädaraà sadä

aho-ah!; narayanaù-Lord Näräyaëa; bhrata-the brother; kaniyan-younger; yasya-of whom; sa-


udaraù-born from the same womb; sat-dharmam-transcendental religious principles; manayan-
teaching; yasya-of whom; vidadhati-places; adaram-respect; sadä-always.

Ah! Lord Näräyaëa is your younger brother, born from the same womb. Honoring the path of
religion, He always treats you with great respect.

ittham indrasya saubhagya-


vaibhavaà kértayan muhuù
devarñir vädayan véëäà
çläghamäno nanarta tam

çré-parékñit-Çré Parékñit; uväca-said; ittham-in this way; indrasya-of Indra; saubhagya-of


the good fortune; vaibhavam-the opulence; kértayan-glorifying; muhuù-continually; devarñiù-
Devarñi Närada; vadayan-playing; vénäm-his vina; çläghamänaù-glorifying; nanarta-danced;
tam-him.

Çré Parékñit said: Repeatedly praising Indra's great good fortune in this way, and playing his
véëä, Devarñi Närada began to dance.

Text 13

tato 'bhivädya devarñim


uväcendraù çanair hriyä
bho gandharva-kaläbhijïä
kià mäm upahasann asi

tataù-then; abhivadya-greeting; devarñim-Devarñi Närada; Šuväca-said; indraù-Indra; sanaiù-


slowly; hriya-with embarrassment; bho-O; gandharva-kala-abhijïä-learned musician; kim-why?;
mäm-at me; upahasan-laughing; asi-you are.

Then, with great embarrassment, Indra slowly said to Devarñi Närada: O learned musician,
why are you mocking me?

Text 14

asya na svarga-räjasya
våttaà vetsi tvam eva kim
kati varän ito daitya-
bhityäsmäbhir na nirgatam

asya-of him; na-not; svarga-of Svargaloka; räjasya-of the king; våttam-the activities; vetsi-
know; tvam-you; eva-certainly; kim-whether?; kati-how many?; varan-times; itaù-from this
place; daitya-of the demons; bhitya-with fear; asmäbhiù-by us; na-not; nirgatam-departed.

Do you not know the history of the king of Svargaloka? How many times have we not left
this place out of fear of the demons?

Text 15

äcaran balir indratvam


asurän eva sarvataù
süryendv-ädy-adhikäreñu
nyayunkta kratu-bhäga-bhuk

acaran-attaining; baliù-Bali Mahäräja; indratvam-the post of Indra; asuran-the demons; eva-


certainly; sarvataù-everywhere; surya-as the sun-god; indu-and the moon-god; ädi-beginning
with; adhikaresu-as the rulers; nyayunkta-appointed; kratu-of the sacrifices; bhaga-the portions;
bhuk-enjoying.

Once Bali Mahäräja occupied the post of Indra. He personally enjoyed Indra's portion in the
Vedic sacrifices. He posted demons as the rulers of the sun, moon, and other planets.

tato nas täta-mätåbhyäà


tapobhir vitatair dåòhaiù
toñito 'py aàça-mätåeëa
gato bhrätåtvam acyutaù

tataù-then; naù-of us; tata-by the father; mätåbhyam-and mother; tapobhiù-with austerities;
vitataiù-extended; drdhaiù-and severe; toñitaù-pleased; api-also; aàça-matreëa-by a plenary
portion; gataù-attained; bhåtartvam-the state of being a brother; acyutaù-the infallible Supreme
Personality of Godhead.

Then, pleased by my parents' long and severe austerity, the Šinfallible Supreme Personality
of Godhead appeared by His plenary portion as my brother.

Text 17

tathäpy ahatvä tän chatrün


kevalaà nas trapa-kåtä
mäyä-yacanayädäya
bale räjyam dadau sa me

tathä api-nevertheless; ahatva-without killing; tan-them; satrun-the enemies; kevalam-only;


naù-of us; trapa-embarrassment; kåta-creating; maya-a trick; yacanaya-by begging; adaya-
taking; baleù-from Bali; räjyam-the kingdom; dadau-gave; saù-He; me-to me.
Still, the Lord did not kill my enemies. He merely pretended to beg the kingdom from them,
and then embarrassed me by giving the results of His begging to me.

Text 18

spardhäsüyädi-doñeëa
brahma-hatyädi-päpataù
nitya-päta-bhayenäpi
kià sukhaà svarga-väsinäm

spärdha-with rivalry asuya-and envy; ädi-beginning; dosena-by the faults; brahma-of


brähmaëas; hatya-with the killing; ädi-beginning; papataù-because of the sins; nitya-continual;
pata-of falling down; bhayena-because of the fear; kim-what?; sukham-happiness; svarga-of
Svargaloka; vasinam-of the residents.

Because we are envious, embroiled in unremitting competition, and filled with many faults,
and because we sometimes murder brähmaëas and commit many other sins, we live in constant
fear of falling down from our positions. Where is there any happiness for the residents of
Svargaloka?

Text 19

kià ca mäà praty upendrasya


viddhy upekñaà viçeñataù
sudharmäà pärijätaà ca
svargän märtyaà ninäya saù

kim ca-furthermore; mäm-me; prati-to; upendrasya-of Vämana; viddhi-know; upekñam-


contempt; viçeñataù-specifically; sudharmam-the Sudharma assembly house; pärijätam-the
pärijäta flower; ca-and; svargat-from Svargaloka; martyam-to Martyaloka; ninaya-brought; saù-
He.

You should know that Vämana treats me with contempt. He Šforcibly took both the
Sudharmä assembly house and the pärijäta flower from Svargaloka and brought them to the
earth.

Text 20

gopälaiù kriyamänaà me
nyahan püjäà cirantaném
akhaëòaà khäëòväkhyaà me
priyaà dahitavän vanam

gopalaiù-by the cowherds; kriyamänam-performed; me-for me; nyahan-stopping; pujam-the


worship; cirantanim-long-eñöablished; akhandam-the entire; khandava-Khandava; akhyam-
named; me-to me; priyam-dear; dahitavan-burned; vanam-the forest.

He stopped the cowherds' traditional worship of me, and He burned to the ground the
Khaëòava forest, which is so dear to me.

Text 21

trailokya-träsa-kåd-våtra-
vadhärthaà prärthitaù purä
audasinyaà bhajaàs tatra
prerayäm äsa mäà param

trailokya-the three planetary systems; trasa-fear; kåt-creating; våtra-of Vrtrasura; vadha-the


killing; ärtham-for the purpose; prärthitaù-prayed; pura-formerly; audasinyam-indifference;
bhajan-manifesting; tatra-in that matter; prerayäm äsa-sent; mäm-me; param-then.

When I begged Him to kill the demon Våtra, who had terrified the three worlds, the Lord was
not willing to do anything. He told me to kill the demon myself.

Text 22

utsadya mäm avajïäya


madéyam amarävatém
sarvopari sva-bhavanaà
räcayäm äsa nütanam

utsadya-leaving; mäm-me; avajïäya-treating with contempt; madéyam-my; amaravatim-city


of Amaravati; sarva-everything; upari-above; sva-own; bhavanam-abode; racayäm äsa-created;
nutanam-new.

Treating me with contempt, He left my city of Amarävaté and made a new home for Himself
above all the worlds.

Text 23

ärädhana-balät pitror
agrahäc ca purodhasaù
Špüjäà své-kåtya naù sadyo
yaty adåçyaà nijaà padam

aradhana-of the worship; balat-because of the power; pitroù-of my parents; agrahat-because


of favor; ca-also; purodhasaù-to my priest Brhaspati; pujam-the worship; svi-kåtya-accepting;
naù-of us; sadyaù-at once; jäti-goes; ädåçyam-beyond the range of sight; nijam-to His own;
padam-abode.

At the time of His departure He only accepted my worship to show kindness to my priest
Båhaspati and because my parents were also worshiping Him. Very quickly He left for His own
abode, far beyond the range of my sight.

Text 24

punaù sa-tvaram ägatya


svärghya-své-karaëäd vayam
anugrahyas tvayety ukto
'smän ädiçati vaïcayan

punaù-again; sa-with; tvaram-speed; agatya-returning; sva-own; arghya-offering of arghya;


svi-karaëat-because of accepting; vayam-we; anugrahyaù-are honored; tvaya-by You; iti-thus;
uktaù-addressed; asmän-us; ädisati-instructs; vaïcayan-cheating.

When I said to Him, "We will be honored if You quickly return to accept our offerings of
arghya," He cheated me by speaking this instruction:

yävan nähaà samäyämi


tävad brahmä çivo 'thavä
bhavadbhiù püjanéyo 'tra
matto bhinnau na tau yataù

yavat-as long as; na-not; aham-I; samayami-come; tavat-then; brahma-Brahmä; sivaù-Çiva;


athava-or; bhavadbhiù-by you; pujaniyaù-should be worshipped; atra-here; mattaù-from Me;
bhinnau-different; na-not; tau-they; yataù-because.

When I am not here you may worship Brahmä or Çiva, for they are not different from Me.

Text 26

eka-mürtis trayo devä


viñëu-rudra-pitämahäù
ity ädi çästra-vacanaà
bhavadbhir vismåtaà kim u

eka-one; murtiù-form; trayaù-the three; devaù-gods; Šviñëu-Viñëu; rudra-Çiva; pitamahaù-


and Brahmä; iti-thus; ädi-beginning; sastra-of scripture; vacanam-the statement; bhavadbhiù-by
you; vismåtam-forgotten; kim-whether?; u-indeed.

Have you forgotten the words of scripture: "The one Supreme Lord has expanded into the
three forms of Viñëu, Brahmä and Çiva"?

Text 27

väso 'syäniyato 'smäbhir


agamyo muni-durlabhaù
vaikuëöhe dhruvaloke ca
kñiräbdhau ca kadäcana

vasaù-the residence; asya-of Him; aniyataù-is not always the same; asmäbhiù-by us; agamya-
unapproachable; muni-by the sages; durlabhaù-difficult to attain; vaikuëöhe-in Vaikuëöha;
dhruvaloke-in Dhruvaloka; ca-and; kñira-of milk; äbdhau-in the ocean; ca-also; kadäcana-
sometimes.

Neither I nor the sages can go to His abode. He does not stay for very long in any one place.
Sometimes He stays in Vaikuëöha, sometimes in Dhruvaloka, and sometimes in the Kñérodaka
Ocean.

samprati dvärakäyäà ca
taträpi niyamo 'sti na
kadäcit päëòavägäre
mathuräyäà kadäcana

puryäà kadäcit taträpi


gokule ca vanäd vane
itthaà tasyävaloko 'pi
durlabho naù kutaù kåpä

samprati-at present; dvarakayam-in Dvaraka; ca-also; tatra api-nevertheless; niyamaù-always;


asti-is; na-not; kadäcit-sometimes; päëòava-of the Pandavas; agare-in the palace; mathurayam-in
Mathura; kadäcana-sometimes; puryam-in the city; kadäcit-sometimes; tatra api-nevertheless;
gokule-in Gokula; ca-and; vanat-from forest; vane-to forest; ittham-in this way; tasya-of Him;
avalokaù-the sight; api-even; durlabhaù-is difficult to attain; naù-to us; kutaù-where?; kåpä-is
the mercy.

Now He is at Dvärakä. But He does not always stay there. Sometimes He is in the palace of
the Päëòavas, sometimes in the city of Mathurä, and sometimes going from forest to forest in
Gokula. In this way it is very difficult for us to see Him. Where is His mercy to us?

parameñöhi-suta-çreñöha
kintu sva-pitaraà hareù
anugraha-padaà viddhi
lakñmékänta-suto hi saù

parameñöhi-of Brahmä; suta-of the sons; çreñöha-O best; kintu-however; sva-you; pitaram-
father; hareù-of Lord Kåñëa; anugraha-of the mercy; padam-the object; viddhi-please know;
lakñmé-kanta-of Lord Näräyaëa, the husband of Lakñmé; sutaù-the son; hi-indeed; saù-he.

O best son of Brahmä, know that your father is the actual object of Lord Kåñëa's mercy. He
is directly the son of Lord Näräyaëa, the husband of Lakñmé.

Text 30

yasyaikasmin dine çakrä


mädåçäù syuç caturdaça
manv-ädi-yuktä yasyähas
catur-yuga-sahasrakam

yasya-of whom; ekasmin-in one; dine-day; sakraù-Indras; mädåçaù-like myself; suyaù-are;


caturadasa-14; manu-Manus; ädi-beginning with; yuktaù-endowed; yasya-of whom; ahaù-the
day; catuù-four; yuga-yugas; sahasrakam-a thousand.

Within his day, which lasts for one thousand catur-yugas, live 14 Manus and many Indras
like myself.

Text 31

niçä ca tävatétthaà yä-


ho-räträëäà çata-trayé
ñañöy-uttarä bhaved varñaà
yasyäyus tac chataà småtam
nisa-the night; ca-also; tavati-in the same way; ittham-in this way; ya-which; ahaù-of days;
ratraëam-and of nights; sata-hundred; trayi-three; sasti-sixty; uttara-and; bhavet-is; varñam-one
year; yasya-of whom; ayuù-the life; tat-that; satam-one hundred; småtam-is described in the
Småti-sastra.

His night is as long as his day, 360 such days and nights are his one year, and 100 such years
is the span of his life. This is the description of Småti-çästra.

lokänäà loka-palänäm
api srañöädhikära-daù
pälakaù karma-phala-do
Š rätrau saàharakaç ca saù

lokänäm-of all living entities; loka-palänäm-and of the demigods who rule over planets; api-
also; srasta-creation; adhikara-and authority; daù-giving; palakaù-the protector; karma-of action;
phala-the fruits; daù-giving; ratrau-at night; saàharakaù-the cause of dissolution; ca-also; saù-he.

He creates both the ordinary living entities and the demigods who rule over planets, and he
gives them each a specific sphere where they may act. He protects them, gives them the fruits of
their work, and, on the arrival of his night, destroys them all.

Text 33

sahasra-çirñä yal-loke
sa mahä-puruñaù sphuöam
bhuïjäno yajïa-bhägaughaà
vasaty änanda-daù sadä

sahasra-thousands; sirsa-of heads; yat-of whom; loke-on the planet; saù-He; mahä-puruñaù-
the Maha-puruña; sphutam-is manifested; bhunjanaù-eating; yajïa-of sacrifice; bhaga-of shares;
augham-the multitude; vasati-resides; änanda-bliss; daù-giving; sadä-always.

The thousand-headed Maha-puruña incarnation of the Lord always stays on Brahmä's planet,
eating a great multitude of sacrificial offerings and giving transcendental bliss to all.

Text 34

itthaà yukti-sahasraiù sa
çré-kåñëasya kåpäspadam
kià vaktavyaà kåpä-pätram
iti kåñëaù sa eva hi

ittham-in this way; yukti-of reasons; sahasraiù-with thousands; saù-he; çré-kåñëasya-of Çré
Kåñëa; kåpä-of mercy; aspadam-the object; kim-what?; vaktavyam-need be said; kåpä-of mercy;
pätram-the object; iti-thus; kåñëaù-Kåñëa; saù-he; eva-certainly; hi-indeed.

In this way I have given thousands of reasons to consider Brahmä the object of Lord Kåñëa's
mercy. What more need I say? Brahmä is himself an empowered incarnation of Lord Kåñëa.

tac chruti-småti-väkyebhyaù
prasiddhaà jïäyate tvayä
anyac ca tasya mähätmyaà
tal-lokänäm api prabho

Š tat-this; çruti-of the Sruti-sastra; småti-and Småti-sastra; vakyebhyaù-from the statements;


prasiddham-famous; jïäyate-is known; tvaya-by you; anyat-other; ca-also; tasya-of him;
mahätmyam-the glory; tat-lokänäm-of the residents of his planet; api-also; prabho-O lord.

This fact is celebrated in the words of both Sruti and Småti çästras. My lord, you know this
fact and many other glories of both Brahmä and those who reside on his planet.

çré-parékñid uväca

indrasya vacanaà çrutvä


sädhu bhoù sädhv iti bruvan
tväravän brahmaëo lokaà
bhagavän närado gataù

çré-parékñit-Çré Parékñit; uväca-said; indrasya-of Indra; vacanam-the statement; çrutva-


having heard; sädhu-well done!; bhoù-Oh!; sädhu-well done!; iti-thus; bruvan-saying; tvara-van-
quick; brähmaëaù-of Brahmä; lokam-to the planet; bhagavan-lord; näradaù-Närada; gataù-went.

Çré Parékñit said: When he heard Indra's words, Lord Närada said, "Well done! Oh, well
done!" and then quickly traveled to the planet of Brahmä.

yajïänäà mahatäà tatra
brahmarñibhir anäratam
bhaktyä vitäyamänänäà
praghoñaà dürato 'çåëot

yajïänäm-of Vedic sacrifices; mahatam-great; tatra-there; brahma-rsibhiù-by the great sages;


anaratam-continually; bhaktyä-with devotion; vitayamänänäm-being performed; praghosam-the
sound; dürataù-from a distance; açåëot-heard.

From a distance Närada heard the sounds of great sages continually, and with great devotion,
performing a series of great Vedic sacrifices.

dadarça ca tatas teñu


prasannaù parameçvaraù
mahä-puruña-rüpeëa
jäta-maëòala-maëòitaù

dadarça-saw; ca-also; tataù-then; tesu-among them; prasannaù-pleased; parama-éçvaraù-the


Supreme Personality of Godhead; mahä-puruña-of the Maha-puruña; rüpena-in the form; Šjäta-
maëòala-maëòitaù-with locks of matted hair.

Then among them he saw the blissful Supreme Personality of Godhead in His mahä-puruña
form, His hair matted.

sahasra-mürdhä bhagavän
yajïa-mürtiù çriyä saha
ävirbhüyädadäd bhagän
änandayati yäjakän

sahasra-thousand; murdha-heads; bhagavan-the Supreme Lord; yajïa-murtiù-the deity of


sacrifices; çriya-the goddess of fortune; saha-with; avirbhuya-manifesting; adadat-accepting;
bhagan-the offerings; änandayati-pleases; yajakan-the offerers of sacrifice.

Accompanied by the goddess of fortune, the thousand-headed Supreme Lord of all sacrifices
was pleasing the performers of sacrifice by accepting their offerings.

sahasresu-into thousands; arpayan-placing; adan-eating.

Taking the offerings in thousands of hands, and placing them in thousands of mouths, the
Supreme Lord, in order to please Brahmä, ate the offerings.

dattveñöän yajamänebhyo
varän nidrä-gåhaà gataù

nidräm ädatta lélayä

dattva-giving; iñöan-desired; yajamanebhyaù-to the performers of sacrifice; varan-

The Lord offered to the performers of sacrifices all the benedictions they requested. He then
retired to His bedroom, and, as the goddess of fortune massaged His feet, He happily fell asleep.

Brahmä ordered the sages, who were his sons, to perform sacrifces, and then, to tend to his
duties in managing the universe, Brahmä left for his own abode.

parameñöhi-Brahmä; asane-on his throne; tatra-there; sukha-comfortably; asinam-seated;

param-devoted; sa-with; asra-tears; asta-in his eight; netrakam-eyes.

As Brahmä comfortably sat on his throne and intently heard the recitation of the glories of his
Lord, the Personality of Godhead, tears came to his eight eyes.

vicitra-wonderful; parama-great; aiçvarya-opulence; samagri-assembled; parisevitam-served;

Approaching his father, who was served by a host of wonderful opulences, Närada fell down
like a stick to offer respects and said:

Çré Närada said: You are certainly the object of Lord Hari's mercy. You are the master of
the Prajäpatis and the grandfather of all living entities.

ekaù-alone; såjati-create; pati-maintain; atti-destroy; bhuvanäni-worlds; catudasa-fourteen;

You alone create, maintain, and destroy the fourteen worlds. You are eternally the master of
the universe. It is said that you are parentless and self-born.

puräëa-nigamädayaù

sabhayam-in the assembly; yasya-of whom; vidyante-are; murtimantaù-personified; ärtha-the

born; puräëa-Puräëas; nigama-Vedas; adayaù-beginning.

Born from your four mouths, the Personified Vedas, Puräëas, and other scriptures that reveal
the goal of life, stay in your assembly-house.

yasya lokaç ca niçchidra-


sva-dharmäcara-niñöhayä
madädi-rahitaiù sadbhir
labhyate çata-janmabhiù

Š yasya-of whom; lokaù-the planet; ca-also; nischidra-faultless; sva-own; dharma-duties;


acara-performance; niñöhaya-with faith; mada-unrestrained passion; ädi-beginning with;
rahitaiù-without; sadbhiù-by saintly persons; labhyate-is attained; sata-with a hundred;
janmabhiù-births.
The saintly sages, who are free from lust and all other vices, attain your planet after faithfully
and faultlessly performing their prescribed duties for a hundred births.

In this universe no place is superior to your abode. Even Lord Näräyaëa's planet named
Vaikuëöha exists only within your realm.

yasmin-in which; nityam-eternally; vaset-resides; säkñät-directly; mahä-puruña-of the Maha-


puruña; vigrahaù-in the form; saù-He; padma-nabhaù-the lotus-naveled Supreme Lord;
yajïänäm-of the sacrifices; bhagan-the offerings; asnan-eating; dadat-giving; phalan-the fruits.

Eating the offerings of sacrifice, and granting the fruits of their sacrifices to His worshipers,
the Supreme Personality of Godhead, in His form of the Mahä-puruña, eternally resides in your
abode.

At first you made a great endeavor to find the Supreme Personality of Godhead, but you
could not find Him. Then, by performing austerities you were able to see Him for a moment in
your heart.

lélä-nänä-vapur-dharaù

tat-this; satyam-the truth; asi-are; kåñëasya-of Lord Kåñëa; tvam-you; eva-certainly; nitaram-

The truth is that you are very dear to Lord Kåñëa. Indeed, you are the Supreme Personality of
Godhead, Kåñëa, who assumes many different forms for His pastimes.

vistarya brahmaëo 'sakåt
çakra-proktaà sva-dåñöaà ca

Çré Parékñit said: Again and again singing Brahmä's glories, which Indra had described, and
which he now personally saw, Närada bowed down before Brahmä with great devotion.

Š As he heard Närada's words, Brahmä became very agitated. Covering his eight ears, through
his four mouths he said, "I am only a servant," again and again.

asravya-what should not be heard; sravanat-because of hearing; jätam-produced; kopam-

Restraining with great effort the anger these unbearable words created within him, four-faced

Çré Brahmä said: I am not the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kåñëa. From your earliest
childhood have you not repeatedly learned this from the Vedic scriptures, from common-sense
logic, and from my own explanations?

tasya-of Him; çaktiù-the potency; mahä-maya-Maha-maya; dasi-a maidservant; iva-like;

universe; pati-maintains; sva-own; guëaiù-with the three modes of nature; saàharati-destroys;
api-also.

His potency is Mahä-mäyä. In His eyes Mahä-mäyä is like a Šmaidservant who, employing
the three modes of nature, creates, maintains, and destroys the material universe.

tasya eva vayaà sarve 'py


adhénä mohitäs tayä
tan na kåñëa-kåpä-leçä-
syäpi pätram avehi mäm

tasya-of that mahä-maya; eva-certainly; vayam-we; sarve-all; api-also; adhinaù-under the


dominion; mohitaù-bewildered; taya-by her; tat-therefore; na-not; kåñëa-of Lord Kåñëa; kåpä-of
the mercy; lesasya-of a small portion; api-even; pätram-the object; avehi-you should know;

All of us are bewildered by this Maha-maya. We are very firmly under her control. For this
reason you should know that I have not received even a small portion of Lord Kåñëa's mercy.

I continually think: "I am the great spiritual leader, the supreme controller, and the
grandfather of this universe. I was personally born from the lotus flower sprouted from the navel
of Lord Kåñëa. I am a performer of great austerities. I am a great devotee of Lord Kåñëa." In
this way Lord Kåñëa's illusory potency Mäyä destroys me with intense pride. In addition to that I
am always angry, overwhelmed by the endless duties I must perform to maintain the universe.

bhüta-präyätma-lokéya-
näça-cintä-niyantritaù
Šsarva-gräsi-mahä-käläd
bhéto muktià paraà våëe

bhüta-birth; praya-and death; ätma-my; lokiya-of the world; nasa-destruction; cinta-

I am anxious that someday my planet will be destroyed. Afraid of all-devouring time, I pray
for ultimate liberation.

Only for this purpose I worship the Supreme Personality of Godhead and I cause others to
worship Him. (You may say that the Supreme Personality of Godhead personally resides on my
planet, but I say:) Where does the Supreme Personality of Godhead not reside?

bhagaà gåhëäti kevalam
svayaà sampädita-preñöha-
yajïasyänugrahäya ca

veda-the Vedas; pravartanaya-to preach the message; asau-He; bhagam-the offerings;


gåhnati-accepts; kevalam-only; svayan-personally; sampädita-eñöablished; preñöha-most dear;
yajïasya-sacrifice; anugrahaya-for the mercy; ca-and.

He personally accepts the sacrificial offerings here only to firmly establish the Vedic
revelation and also to bestow mercy on the dear devotees who make offerings to Him. (He does
not do it to bestow mercy on me.)

vicäräcärya buddhyasva
sa hi bhakty-eka-vallabhaù
kåpäà tanoti bhakteñu
näbhakteñu kadäcana

vicara-please consider; acarya-O spiritual master Närada; Šbuddhyasva-please understand;


saù-He; hi-indeed; bhakti-of devotion; eka-only; vallabhaù-is fond; kåpäm-mercy; tanoti-gives;
bhaktesu-to the devotees; na-not; abhaktesu-to the non-devotees; kadäcana-at any time.

O Närada Acärya, think for a moment. You should know that the Lord is pleased only by
devotion. He gives His mercy only to the devotees, never to the non-devotees.

bahu-manye tad ätmänäà
näham agaùsu rudravat

bhaktiù-devotion; dure-far away; astu-is; tasmin-for Him; me-of me; na-not; aparadhaù-

I am very far from having any devotion to the Lord. If I somehow avoid offending Him I
think I am doing very well indeed. The Lord does not forgive my offenses as He forgives the
sins of Çiva.

vaiñëava-droha-tat-paraù

One time I gave benedictions to a demon named Hiraëyakaçipu, who became an enemy of the
devotees and proceeded to torment the entire world.

When the Lord, in His form of Çré Nåsiàha, killed that demon, I and my companions, staying
far away out of fear, spoke many eloquent prayers to the Lord, but He refused to recognize us
even with a momentary sidelong glance. Later, during the coronation ceremony of Mahäräja
Prahlada, He kindly approached me and angrily ordered: "Do not give any more benedictions
like this to the demons!" In spite of this order I have since given many benedictions to Rävaëa
and many other demons. Whose tongue has the power to describe the sins of Rävaëa?

sense became completely destroyed by their inflated pride.

våñöi-rains; yuddha-battle; ädina-beginning with; indrasya-of Indra; govardhana-in the

kidnaping; vaniya-in the forest; dhenu-of the cows; adana-taking; ädina-beginning with; ap-
pateù-of Varuna, the king of the waters.

Indra offended the Lord by showering incessant rains on the Govardhana sacrifice, by
fighting with the Lord over the pärijäta flower, and in many other ways also. Varuëa, the king of
the waters, kidnaped Nanda Mahäräja, stole the cows from the forest, and committed many other
offenses.

kuverasyäpi dusceñöa-

yamasya-of Yamaräja; ca-also; tat-of Him; acarya-of the teacher; ätmaja-of the son;

Yama terribly killed the son of the Lord's teacher, and Kuvera is partly responsible for the
sins of his follower, the demon Çaìkhacüòa.

sarpaç ca sahaja-krodha-
duñöä käliya-bandhavaù

adhaù-in the lower; loke-worlds; tu-indeed; daiteyaù-the demons; vaiñëava-of the devotees;

Also, in the lower worlds the demons and the angry serpents who are relatives of Käliya-näga
have become enemies of the Vaiñëavas.

When Kåñëa stopped for lunch I used my illusory potency to kidnap the boys and calves

Then I saw something very wonderful. Frightened, I bowed down before Him and offered
prayers. I arrogantly offended Him, and He responded by cheating me with His pastimes of a

Çiva is famous as the personal friend of Lord Viñëu. In this universe I do not see anyone who
is the object of the Lord's mercy as Çiva.

materialistic goals of life; parama-supreme; aiçvarya-power and opulence; bhogakaù-and many

Always intoxicated by the sweet nectar of Çré Kåñëa's lotus feet, Çiva has lost all interest in
material goals, in supreme power and opulence, and in varieties of sense-pleasure.

Eating Dhustura seeds and arka leaves, decorated with a garland of skulls, and his naked
body smeared with ashes, Çiva laughs at materialists like myself, who are addicted to sense-
pleasures.

viprakérëa-disheveled; jäta-matted hair; bharah unmattaù-a madman; iva-like; ghurnate-


staggers about; tathä-then; sva-himself; gopana-concealing; äsaktaù-attached; kåñëa-of Lord
Kåñëa; pada-feet; äbja-of the lotus; sauca-from the washing; jam-produced; gaìgam-the Ganges
River; murdhni-on his head; vahan-carrying; harñat-out of happiness; nåtyan-dancing; ca-also;
layate-becomes destroyed; jagat-the universe.

Wearing matted locks of disheveled hair, and eager to conceal his actual nature, he staggers
about like a madman. On his head he happily carries the Ganges, which has washed the lotus feet
of Lord Kåñëa. When he dances he destroys the universe.

kåñëa-prasädät tenaiva
mädåçam adhikäriëäm
abhiñöärpayituà muktis
tasya patnyäpi çakyate

kåñëa-of Lord Kåñëa; prasädat-because of the mercy; tena-by him; eva-certainly; mädåçam-
like us; adhikarinam-of the demigods; abhiñöa-desired; arpayitum-to be given; muktiù-
liberation; tasya-of him; patnya-by the wife; api-even; sakyate-is able.

Lord Kåñëa is so kind to him that not only does he have the power to grant the most valuable
liberation to demigods like myself, but even his wife has that power.

aho sarve 'pi te muktäù


çivaloka-niväsinaù
muktäs tat-kåpayä kåñëa-
bhaktäç ca kati näbhavan

aho-ah!; sarve-all; api-even; te-they; muktaù-are liberated; sivaloka-of Çivaloka; nivasinaù-


the residents; Šmuktaù-liberated; tat-of him; kåpäya-by the mercy; kåñëa-of Lord Kåñëa;
bhaktaù-devotees; ca-also; kati-how many?; na-not; abhavan-have become.

Ah! All the residents of Çivaloka are liberated souls. By Çiva's mercy how many of them are
not only liberated, but are now pure devotees of Lord Kåñëa?

kåñëäc chivasya bhedekñä


mahä-doña-karé matä
ago bhagavatä svasmin
kñamyate na çive kåtam

kåñëat-from Lord Kåñëa; sivasya-of Çiva; bheda-of a difference; ékña-the sight; mahä-a
great; dosa-fault; kari-doing; mata-is considered; agaù-sins; bhagavata-by the Supreme
Personality of Godhead; svasmin-to Himself; kñamyate-forgiven; na-not; sive-to Çiva; kåtam-
performed.

To consider Çiva different from Lord Kåñëa is a great offense. The Supreme Personality of
Godhead may forgive offenses committed to Him, but He does not forgive those committed
against Çiva.

tripureçvarato bhayät
tathä våkäsurädeç ca
saìkaöaà paramaà gataù
çivaù samuddhåto 'nena
harñitaç ca vaco-'måtaiù

Tripurasura; bhayat-fearful; tathä-also; vrkasura-with Vrkasura; adeù-beginning; ca-also;
saìkatam-danger; paramam-great; gataù-attained; sivaù-Çiva; samuddhåtaù-was rescued; anena-
by Him; harñitaù-pleased; ca-also; vacaù-with words; amåtaiù-as sweet as nectar.
When Tripureçvara, Våkäsura, and other demons maddened by benedictions he gave them,
placed Çiva in a very dangerous position, Lord Kåñëa at once rescued him and comforted him
with words as sweet as nectar.

Text 87

tad-antaraìga-sad-bhaktyä
kåñëena vaça-vartinä
svayam ärädhyate cäsya
mähätmya-bhara-siddhaye

tat-of him; antaraìga-confidential; sat-transcendental; Šbhaktyä-by devotion; kåñëena-by


Lord Kåñëa; vasa-vartina-under the dominion; svayam-personally; aradhyate-is worshiped; ca-
also; asya-of him; mahätmya-of the glory; bhara-of the abundance; siddhaye-for the perfection.

Conquered by the intimate love of His devotee, Lord Kåñëa personally worships Çiva just to
glorify him.

Lord Kåñëa personally asked Çiva to drink the terrible poison produced from the churning of
nectar. In this way Çiva became worshiped by the Prajäpatis, and showered with streams of great
glory.

The Puräëas sing of the mercy of Lord Kåñëa to Çiva. You know this already. O sage, please
remember his glories.

Çré Parékñit said: O affectionate mother, Närada offered obeisances to his spiritual master
and was about to depart for Kailäsa Hill when Brahmä glanced at his son and said:

Çré Brahmä said: Submissive to the loving service of Kuvera, Çiva resides in Kuvera's place
on Mount Kailäsa in the material universe.

tad-vidik-päla-rüpena
tad-yogya-parivärakaù
vasaty äviskåta-svalpa-
vaibhavaù sann umä-patiù

tat-of that; vidik-direction; pala-of the protector; rüpena-in the form; tat-for him; yogya-
appropriate; parivarakaù-with associates; vasati-resides; aviskåta-manifested; svalpa-small;
vaibhavaù-opulence; san-being so; uma-patiù-Çiva, the husband of Uma.

Assuming the role of the protector of the northern direction, Çiva resides there, surrounded
by his associates, and keeping very little material wealth.

yathä hi kåñëo bhagavän


mädåçaà bhakti-yantritaù
mama loke svarädau ca

yathä-as; hi-indeed; kåñëaù-Kåñëa; bhagavan-the Supreme Personality of Godhead;

the planet; svara-ädau-beginning with Svargaloka; ca-also; vasati-resides; ucita-appropriate;
lélaya-with pastimes.

The Supreme Personality of Godhead Kåñëa becomes conquered by the loving service of
devotees like myself, and for this reason He resides on my planet, on Svargaloka, and in many
other places as well, and enjoys suitable pastimes there. (In the same way Çiva resides in Kailäsa
because of the devotion of Kuvera.)

atha vayu-puräëasya
matam etad bravémy aham

çré-mahädeva-lokas tu
saptävaraëato bahiù
nityaù sukhamayaù satyo
labhyas tat-sevakottamaiù

atha-now; vayu-puräëasya-of the Vayu Puräëa; matam-the opinion; etat-this; bravimi-speak;


aham-I; çré-mahadeva-of Çiva; lokaù-the planet; tu-indeed; säpta-seven; avaraëataù-the
coverings; bahiù-outside; nityaù-eternal; sukhamayaù-full of bliss; satyaù-transcendental;
labhyaù-attainable; tat-of him; sevaka-of servants; uttamaiù-by the best.

I quote the opinion of Väyu Puräëa:

"The planet of Çiva is beyond the seven-fold coverings of the material world. It is eternal,
transcendental, and full of bliss. Only the greatest servants of Çiva may enter it."

mahä-vibhütimän bhäti
sat-paricchada-maëòitaù

smana-equal; mahima-splendor; çrémat-and glory; parivara-of associates; gaëa-by hosts;


avåtaù-surrounded; mahä-great; vibhüti-opulences; man-possessing; bhati-is manifested; sat-
transcendental; paricchada-with garments and ornaments; maëòitaù-decorated.

In that place Çiva is decorated with splendid transcendental garments and ornaments. There
He is the master of great powers and opulences, and there he is surrounded by many associates
as splendid and glorious as he.

abhinnaà tatra so 'rcayan
nijeñöa-devatatvena
kià vä nätanute 'dbhutam

çrémat-full of all powers and opulences; saìkarñaëam-Lord Saìkarñaëa; svasmät-than himself;


abhinnam-not different; tatra-there; saù-he; arcayan-worshiping; nija-own; iñöa-worshipable;
devatatvena-as the Deity; kim-whether?; va-or; na-not; atanute-manifests; adbhutam-wonder.

In that place, even though the two of them are not different, Çiva worships the supremely
powerful and opulent Lord Saìkarñaëa as his chosen Deity. Is this not very wonderful?

tatra gantuà bhavän chaktaù


çré-çive çuddha-bhaktimän
abhigamya tam äçritya
kåpäà kåñëasya paçyatu

tatra-there; gantum-to go; bhavan-you; çaktaù-are able; çré-sive-for Çré Çiva; suddha-pure;
bhaktiman-devotee; abhogamya-approaching; tam-of him; asritya-taking shelter; kåpäm-the
mercy; kåñëasya-of Lord Kåñëa; pasyatu-may see.

Because you are a pure devotee of Çiva you have the power to go there. Go, take shelter of
Çiva, and see how he is the object of Lord Kåñëa's mercy.

Çré Parékñit said: O mother, instructed in this way, and chanting the holy names of Çiva and
Kåñëa, Närada eagerly went to Çivaloka.
