Saint Michael Parish Mission Statement:
We the parishioners of Saint Michael the Archangel, through leadership and strong traditions
are faithful disciples of the teachings of Jesus Christ and His Catholic Church. We commit our-
selves to be generous stewards of our faith, our parish, and our community. We strive to involve all
members to be united in one parish family for the salvation of all.

Notes from the Pastor - Thanks God for the month of August! As with most fine things, choco-
late has its season. There is a simple memory aid that you can use to determine whether it is the cor-
rect time to order chocolate dishes: any month whose name contains the letter A, E, or U is the proper
time for chocolate. (Sandra Boynton, Chocolate: The Consuming Passion) I tried to think about it
and realized all the 11 months contained two and 1 contained all of those letters that is February.
Which means it doesnt matter what month or season it is, what is important is we continue to live
each with passion, like many with season-less passion for chocolate. Summer may not be officially
over but in this month we are looking forward to the beginning of classes. Let us pray for our kids
and parents, especially the first timers: the kids going to school for the first time and our college
freshmen who will be away from their families for the first time, and also our parents who will be
empty nesters for the first time this year! This is certainly a big change in their lives. God bless
them.
Our PSR will also start by September after Labor Day. We thank our catechists who continue to
volunteer this coming school year. As far as I know, we are still in need of three more catechists, one
for third year High School and two for elementary second grade and fifth grade. They will be hav-
ing their training again this August 24
th
at Our Lady of Lourdes in Pittsburg from 12Noon to 4:30PM.
Pray that some of you will come forward to volunteer to teach our children in our catechetical pro-
gram. Pray also for all our catechists. Their job is as challenging as being a parent, even only for an
hour and thirty minutes a week. I also hope and I encourage you to pray that more kids will be in-
spired to join this year!
Our Holy Father, Pope Francis has his prayer intention for this month: universal prayer intention
is: That refugees, forced by violence to abandon their homes, may find a generous welcome and the

Church Renovation Update
Our church renovation project continues to move along and we are getting to
the final steps before starting construction. Our architect has completed the
plans and the general contractor has let them out for bid. The parish council,
finance council and Father Roger discussed the construction contract at a meet-
ing last Tuesday evening. Our project is priced at $501,746. We are satisfied
that this is a fair and reasonable price for the work that we need done. After
much discussion, both Councils and Father Roger were in agreement to move
forward with the renovation project. We plan to pay for one-half of the project
with funds from our savings account and borrow the remainder from the dio-
cese. The Finance Council is confident we can service this loan with moneys
from building fund contributions as well as ordinary parish offerings.
Our project has received preliminary approval from the Diocesan Building
Commission and the next step is to request final approval from Bishop
Kemme. We have made that request and hope for approval during the month
of August.
When we receive approval, construction is scheduled to start at the end of
August. Shortly thereafter we will move Mass services to the parish hall for
the remainder of construction. The project is scheduled to take four months to
complete. We regret the inconvenience of Mass in the parish hall but it is nec-
essary to control construction costs and finish before our 50
th
Jubilee Celebra-
tion. A Meal In His Name will continue through construction and we believe
we can accommodate the Fall Bazaar.
Simpson Construction of Wichita is our general contractor. Bob Simpson
and his company have done many church projects in our diocese and come
highly recommended by these churches and the diocese. We believe we are
blessed to have engaged the services of Bob Simpson and architect Randy
Crook.
Many greatly needed improvements and maintenance items will be accom-
plished in our renovation. We will report in more detail in future updates.
Here is an overview of the individual areas. Most importantly, we will im-
prove the access of our church. The entrances, restrooms, reconciliation area
and sanctuary will all meet ADA standards. Lighting will be replaced and
upgraded to energy-efficient, brighter light levels in the main church and sanc-
tuary areas. The church will receive a facelift in the form of refurbishment of
the pews, and new paint, carpet and tile. The lower roof will be replaced, all
windows will be removed, refurbished and reinstalled in energy-efficient
frames, and all entry doors will be replaced with energy-efficient doors. Other
improvements are planned that will add to our worship experience.
We will report weekly in the bulletin as progress allows. As usual, please
feel free to ask me, Father Roger or any of our parish council members about
our project.

ing at 8:00am. The walk will take place on the track at St. Marys Colgan (212

lets raise some money for Catholic Charities. All the proceeds will go to Cath-

tus. The Walk is Free, but donations are appreciated, and pledge cards will be
available to collect donations from friends and family. Pledge forms are availa-
ble under the Quick Links tab: Walk for Charity Printable forms on catholic-

the event! All donations are fully tax deductible. First 100 to register get a T-
shirt! You can register by going to catholicgorillas.org and going to the Quick

protection of their rights. His intention for evangelization
is: That Christians in Oceania may joyfully announce the
faith to all the people of that region. Many of us pray eve-
ry day for the sick and for all other intentions. May we in-
clude the Holy Fathers intentions for this month in our
prayers.
Our financial statement for the last fiscal year is finally
ready for submission to the diocese and is inserted in our
bulletin for your information. I thank our Finance Council
for putting in their extra time to meet almost every month to
monitor and guide the course of our finances. I thank Janel
Scales for her hard work to make sure that this can be ready.
You will also see in this bulletin an article on Church
Renovation Project Update. I thank the parish council and
finance council who meet last week with the contractor and
architect to be able to move with our project. I thank Dale
Coomes and Dan Duling for their extra effort in helping me
write this update. Hopefully we can start construction before
the end of this month. Like any other home improvements,
we have to sacrifice some of our routine convenience with
the hope of a future benefit. We will be moving to the hall
for our weekend masses with the same schedule. We will
use the main hall for the weekend and the big classroom for
the weekday masses. There is one exception for one Sun-
day mass! I have not talked to the Altar Society about this
yet, although I dont see any reason for them to oppose it
that we will push through with our annual Sunday Fall Ba-
zaar. As we all know the bazaar is a big event in the parish

and there is no need to forgo it this year. We just have to com-
promise and another sacrifice for all of us, our 10AM mass for
this Sunday will be moved later during that day, after the bazaar,
maybe around 6PM or earlier or later than that. I need your
feedback so we can finalize our plans. Let me know! Finally,
our Church construction is not only something material and
physical it is a spiritual event. It springs from our desire to
improve our space of worship, it tests our resolve through all the
obstacles, and consequently strengthens our faith and love for
Him. Let us continue to pray for the success of this project and
for the growth of faith and charity for everyone!
