The Tabernacle Township
Committee plans to come in like a
wrecking ball.
At its regular meeting on July
28, the committee granted ap-
proval for the solicitation of bids
to demolish and clear a vacant
property on North Drive.
If homeowners are not going
to take responsibility and secure
these properties, were going to
move forward, Mayor Joseph
Barton said. Thats why we have
the abandoned-property ordi-
nance.
The township also plans to
clear a property on Route 206 and
will continue to seek approval
from the superior court to demol-
ish two other homes on Wimble-
don Way and Lee Drive.
Township solicitor Peter Lange
discussed the matter and received
approval from the court July 25 to
allow the municipality to proceed
with its plan to deal with the
properties.
These properties are aban-
doned, essentially, Lange said.
Theyve been left in disrepair.
Theyve become a nuisance.
While the committee was on
board with getting the work start-
ed, Lange said these actions are
only used as a last resort.
The mayor agreed, stating that
the vacant property on Wimble-
don Way sustained extensive
damage in a fire, leaving an ex-
posed basement and free-standing
fireplace, along with oil tanks,
siding and other items.
Theres debris all over the
property, and its a hazard, Bar-
ton said.
Given the number of owners
who have failed to maintain their
rental properties, the committee
could soon introduce a measure
to address them next.
Our intention is not to punish
anyone, but our intention is to
make sure rental properties are
up to code from a building per-
spective and also from a fire safe-
ty perspective, Barton said.
The future of the Wimbledon
Way and Lee Drive properties will
likely be decided in court in Sep-
Township to demolish
vacant properties

On the afternoon of July 31, the Pinelands Library was transformed into a chocolate factory as
Willy Wonka paid children a visit and offered a tour of his magical laboratory. Lucky for the kids, it
was not required for them to be quiet in the library on this day as laughing, screaming and dancing
were encouraged.

When we did our budget this
year, we appropriated funds just
for this reason, Barton. In years
past, we didnt appropriate funds
to take this on.
Even though the municipality
will pick up the tab for the demo-
lition, it expects to be reimbursed
one way or another.
We demolish, lien the proper-
ty, and the property will go up for
sale and well recover our costs,
Barton said.
Hopefully, the chances are we
will, but there is some risk,
Lange said. Nevertheless, if
these properties arent addressed,
the risk of continuing deteriora-
tion of the neighborhood has a
cost as well. This is to protect the
neighborhoods and the people
who live in those neighbor-
hoods.

The Burlington County Special

tion Foundation is hosting its
16th annual Golf Outing on Aug.
8 at the Medford Lakes Country
Club.
For the past 16 years, the BC-
SSSD Educational Foundation
has been helping students with
disabilities that attend the school
from various towns in Burlington
County and the surrounding
area. The foundation supports
weekend respite days for families
of BCSSSD students, graduation
activities and other needed spe-
cialized supports such as physical
therapy equipment. Events such
as this golf outing provide the
necessary funds to support the
foundation's mission.
This is a great opportunity to
help the most fragile in our com-
munity, foundation president
Paula Lynch said.
This year's event begins at 7:30
a.m. on Aug. 8 at the Medford
Lakes Country Club, 70 Oak
Drive, Medford.
There are sponsorship oppor-
tunities for companies, who wish
to get involved, as well as door
prizes, silent auction and a lunch-
eon. Pellegrino Auto Group has
donated a two-year lease on a 2014
Jeep Cherokee for the first golfer
to make a Hole-In -One on the
seventh hole.

20 percent tip at restaurants
In your editorial: No need to increase
minimum wages for tipped workers, you
state, we're all for workers rights and
for equal and fair pay and for people
who work hard should be provided with a
good living. In this readers opinion, those
are just empty words.
The real economic world is very far from
providing millions of wage earners with
a good living wage.
You state the NJ Restaurant Association
opposes a minimum wage increase, which
is presently $2.13 per hour for tipped work-
ers. When has the restaurant association
ever supported a minimum wage increase?
The restaurant association president
states that tipped workers are guaranteed
to make at least the states minimum wage
of $8.25. If they make less than that in tips,
the employer is obligated to make up the
difference. Perhaps that may be true in a
perfect world, where most wage earners do
not live and work.
The big question is what restaurants be-
long to the NJ Restaurant Association?
Certainly not the ones where the majority
of tipped restaurant employees work.
Unfortunately, we are in a race to the
bottom, where $5 doesn't buy $4 anymore.
If we can't find the courage and decency
to raise the minimum wage for tipped
workers, then lets suggest when restau-
rant patrons go out to eat and get treated
with service and courtesy, please leave a
proper tip of 20 percent. So perhaps we can
get closer to the stated goal of equal and
fair pay for all workers.

letter to the editor
T
he calendar just turned the
page to August, and here we
are, talking about November al-
ready. Were talking about Tuesday,
Nov. 4, to be precise. Thats the date for
the General Election this year.
Yes, temperatures may still soar to
the 90s outside right now, instead of
being in the 60s, 50s or maybe even
40s hopefully not as theyre likely to
be in November. Still, the time both we
as voters and the candidates them-
selves spend now determine what our
lives look like for the next four years.
This fall, there is no big name seat
up for election. Gov. Christie is firmly
entrenched into his post for another
few years, and a successor to President
Obama wont be selected until 2016.
In New Jersey, the two biggest elec-
tions will be for a U.S. Senate seat be-
tween Democrat Cory Booker and Re-
publican Jeff Bell, and a U.S. House of
Representatives seat (1st Congression-
al District) between Republican Garry
Cobb, Democrat Donald Norcross and
independent candidate Scot John
Tomaszewski.
But these elections are just as impor-
tant, if not more so, on a local level.
Throughout New Jersey, municipal
governing bodies and boards of educa-
tion will be holding elections to choose
new members to represent the town.
Mayors, councilmembers and school
board members often have a greater
impact on your daily life than your
governor and president.
The governor and president may be
the sexier post to vote for, but your
trash pickup, your property taxes and
your kids school curriculum has more
of an impact on your day-to-day life,
and those local post holders are the
ones who control those areas the most.
So just because you wont be voting
for the next governor or the next presi-
dent doesnt mean you shouldnt be in
tune with this Novembers elections
and this Novembers issues.
We at The Sun will be providing you
as much election coverage as we possi-
bly can this fall, especially when there
is a contested election at the municipal
level.
If your town has a contested munici-
pal election, expect a full, multi-week
Meet the Candidates series where well
provide you all the detailed informa-
tion about the election itself, as well as
profiles of the candidates and their
stances on the issues that are impor-
tant to you.
If you have any questions that youd
like us to ask the candidates, please
feel free to email us at the address to
the right.
So while you may still be making
trips to the beach and thinking about
back to school or the start of football
instead of heading to the polls, dont
fall behind on the issues at hand. What
happens behind those curtains in No-
vember could have a profound impact
on what happens in front of them for
the next four years.

ing 30-year career as superintend-
ent was unheard of, and Konstan-
tinos should be remembered for
setting the high standard of ex-
cellence the district still achieves
to this day.
He is the one that I believe
that set the tone for the excellence
in the district, Zeuli said. If you
were able to ask him, I think that
would be the thing that hes most
proud of, the standard of excel-
lence that he set, not just for the
students, but for the faculty and
the staff.
A separate committee within
the foundation determines schol-
arship recipients through the use
of standards set by Konstantinos
himself, and Zeuli said he be-
lieves thats why people can look
at the past recipients and see
truly deserving students.
There are standards that were
set up by Kiki himself, Zeuli
said. He emphasized academics,
athletics and activities, and its
got to be an equal combination of
all those things. I think if you
look at the past winners, youll
see some really terrific kids.
This years event, like past
events, was almost at full capaci-
ty, and Zeuli said it always gets a
great reception.
Well have 120 golfers here
today, Zeuli said at the tourna-
ment. I think we can take
around 122 or 124. Its a full day
lunch, golf, cocktails, dinner, a lot
of raffle prizes, and we have
never had a rainout in 22 years.
One golfer at the event was
Greg D'Orazio from AJM Insur-
ance, which sponsored the lunch
before the start of the tourna-
ment.
DOrazio said the foundation
and the scholarships it provides
were definitely worth supporting.
Theyre great things to be able
to support in the community and
for local businesses to be able to
give back, DOrazio said. It
means a lot. Were happy to par-
ticipate, absolutely. Im looking
forward to it.
Echoing DOrazios sentiments
was John Comegno, with John
Comegno Law Group, one of the
events sponsors for the past
decade.
Comegno said his group ad-
mires the phenomenal education-
al services the district provides,
and hes glad the foundation pro-
vides a way that allows people to
support the Lenape District and
its students.
Ive played in this for close to
20 years, Comegno said. Its a
really fun outing, a great spirit.
Little Mill is a great track, and the
foundation does a great job of or-
ganizing this.
