THE BEACON

There are 5 reasons the Lord has the devil on the run at Baughman UMC.
First, members are committed to Christ. We know better than to try and
beat the devil on our own strength. Our trust is in the Lord.
Second, we enjoy terrific lay leadership. Lynn King (Administrative Board),
Lisa Hopkins (Staff Parish), Bill Wright (Finance), Wayne Haubert (Trustees),
Dottie Myers (Education), Missy Stanley (Worship). Each is a terrific leader,
and they are working their hearts out for Christ!
Third, we enjoy an excellent staff. Deb Koretzky (Associate Pastor), Rafe
Shearer (Communications), Mickey Gast (Administration), Charles Seifert
(music), Alyssa Showers (music), Heather Arnold (music), Don Grey
(facilities), Steve Walker (facilities) are all first rate, and are doing an excel-
lent job to make Baughman UMC the very best.
Fourth, we enjoy excellent facilities. You must go a long way to find better
church buildings and grounds. Our new elevator tower, Sunday School
rooms, and library are great additions!
Fifth, we enjoy genuine spiritual vitality - Jesus is alive at Baughman UMC!
Recently two young adults got on their knees here at Baughman to invite
Jesus Christ to live in their hearts and Lord!!! Members are sharing their testi-
monies. Vacation Bible School (VBS) had another successful year of helping
kids make first time commitments to Jesus Christ as Lord. Jesus is alive and
well at Baughman!
The above five reasons are why the devil is on the run at
Baughman United Methodist Church.

Why A Capital Campaign?
I Samuel 1:28 Getting and Giving Back to the Lord
Therefore I have lent him to the Lord. As long as he lives, he is lent to the Lord.
(1 Samuel 1:28 ESV)

Have you ever wanted something so bad, you would do almost anything to see it happen?
It seems to consume you and feel as though your life would be complete when this event takes place.
Hannah did. She was barren and getting older every year while her husbands other wife was having
kids and rubbing it in her face. God heard her prayers and graciously gave her a son. But, what did
Hannah do with that great treasure? She gave him back to the Lord, allowing him to be raised in the
temple, set apart for service to him. Think about what you have been asking God for. Are you ready to
give it back? Is that why you havent received it yet? Remember, after Hannah gave her son to the
Lord, he blessed her with more.
Everything we have comes from the Father (1 Corinthians 4:7).
Follow Hannahs example by giving it all back for his use and glory.

Baughmans leadership (Administrative Board, Finance Committee, and Pastor) have elected to
conduct a Capital Campaign this fall Oct. 26
th
Nov. 23
rd
, 2014. Our Campaigns purpose will be
to raise the money necessary to repair our clock tower (whose roof and mortar was rotted), to re-
pair the church office (leaking roof, new windows, new HVAC), to pay off the loans taken for our
building project.
We now enjoy a world class church facility. Our new educational building is a genuine asset
everyone loves it! It includes ten splendid classrooms, a handsome library, four bathrooms, a new
fellowship hall, a new social hall, and of course a large new elevator that makes every floor acces-
sible. Its FANTASTIC!
In 2016 Baughman will celebrate its 200
th
Anniversary! We want our Church to be spiritually
alive and healthy. We want to fulfill our mission: To make disciples of Jesus Christ
Baughmans ministry is all about changing lives. Like the young couple who arrived at Baugh-
man UMC last summer (2013) with their marriage in tatters and their little girls out of control.
Their family has made huge progress at Baughman! And there is the widow who came to
Baughman a year ago when her daughter was struck down by cancer. She has found hope and
encouragement among us. And recently a divorced man arrived at Baughman looking to restart
his life in Christ. He has found rich fellowship among us, and his active faith life has been restored.
God changes lives at Baughman UMC!
To continue changing lives we need money. In fact, we need over $990,000!
To date, no goals have been set for our Campaign. For now our leadership is praying praying
that God will inspire us to rise above ourselves.
Obviously, you are not expected to give away your retirement account, or to jeopardize your fi-
nancial health. You are simply expected to have a talk with God, and to listen for Gods leading.
Our Capital Campaign promises to be one of the great spiritual experiences of Baughmans histo-
ry. Please pray with Baughmans leadership that God will inspire us to listen for Gods leading.
Amen.

If you have stopped by or called the church office in the last 2 years,
then you have met our new Associate Pastor, Deb. Deb started
working part-time in the office in the position of Operations/
Administration Assistant in Sept. 2012 while continuing to pastor a
church in Harrisburg. She took a 6 month break from pastoral du-
ties in January 2014 and was appointed to Baughman on July 1,
2014. Pastor Deb is a Licensed Local Pastor and a graduate of Wes-
ley Theological Seminary Course of Study in Washington DC. She
has been in licensed ministry since 2002, serving several small
churches in the Harrisburg District. She brings to Baughman not
only Operational and Administrative skills for the church, but a pas-
sion for missions and children.
Pastor Deb will be revamping the Childrens Ministries of Baugh-
man with the hopes of bringing more children and parents to
Christ. She is married to Ralph for 30 years, has 5 children and 6
grandchildren. For the last 16 years, she has been to Zimbabwe on
two VIM teams and has spent at least 2 weeks each summer on VIM
mission trips to the Czech Republic doing construction work and
now has turned her focus to Vacation Bible School with the chil-
dren. She has also been a Counselor and Co-dean at an Elementary
Camp at Camp Penn and is Co-chair of the Harrisburg District Lay
Servant Ministries.
In her spare time she enjoys yard sales, antiques, home improve-
ment shows, her grandkids and driving in the Mustang with her
husband Ralph.
Welcome Pastor Deb!

Twenty-One Years of Old-Fashioned Fun!

Ye Men of Baughman Church proudly announce the much-anticipated and come-from-miles-
around 21
st
Annual Ice Cream Festival to be held on Saturday, August 9, 2014, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The church
will be selling 5 flavors of homemade ice cream in dishes and cones, sundaes, pie a la mode, hamburgers, hot
dogs, chicken corn soup, sodas and water.

The ice cream is made with a vintage and fully restored 1950 John Deere tractor powering a pair of 5-gallon
White Mountain paddle freezers by way of heavy leather belts connected to the wheels of the tractors power
take-off. The Third is powered by an antique International Hit and Miss gasoline engine, also connected via a
belt and pulley system. The third mixers drive train has been ingeniously modified with the addition of a re-
claimed Crosley Gearbox and shifter for throwing the drive train in and out of neutral. This allows the process to
stop from time to time to test the consistency of the batch of ice cream without shutting down the engine.

Come and watch this old fashion way of making ice cream and enjoy a lunch or supper. Theres plenty for the
whole family to see, hear and savor!

AUGUST 2014

The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts
are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ.
1 Corinthians 12:12-13

God has done great things through the Baughman body of Christ at VBS July 20 25
th
!
Wednesday night (July 24
th
), 30 children made a first time commitment to Jesus and 32 chil-
dren, teens and adults recommitted their lives to Christ.
In fact, every child in Baughmans VBS gave their life to Jesus this week!

This is a powerful witness of the body of Christ at work. Every single person who helped with
VBS in some way is a part of this victory. From Tina Moyer who organized it all, to the people
of the congregation who have been praying for each child by name for the past few weeks.
God used the loving chaperones, the oh-so-creative snack team, the craft team, the music
ministry team, the game crew, the set-up people, the clean up crew and of course Joe Innerst
who got the kids laughing.

So many parts to the body. All important. All working together to bring kids to Jesus.
Important numbers:
67 children attended this years VBS.
23 adults and 10 youth volunteered to help with the kids.
The mission project raised $110 for the Bibles for Africa program.
9 families have been identified as not having a church home.
One family contacted us already about making BUMC their home church!

Erwens Fleurant is a student from a village called Ouanaminthe in northern Hai-
ti. Ever since the daughter of Charlie and Donna Sweeney met Erwens during
a mission trip two summers ago, the Sweeneys have endeavored to help Er-
wens by providing a safe home and meeting his basic needs while he earns his
college degree at Messiah College here in the U.S.
We welcome Erwens to our Baughman church family.!
Welcome Erwens!
