Alexa Rosen is a native of Med-
ford, but she describes Ocean City
as her second home.
Ever since she could remem-
ber, Rosen attended Night in
Venice, a boat parade taking place
along the citys back bay and la-
goons.
When the opportunity arose
for Rosen to participate in the
Miss Night in Venice competi-
tion, she didnt even hesitate.
I have watched it every year,
Rosen said. I didnt realize I
could be a part of it.
At 15, Rosen just met the mini-
mum age to participate. It was
enough for her to just be a part of
the event.
However, Rosen didnt just par-
ticipate in Miss Night in Venice.
She won the crown of Miss Night
in Venice.

On the afternoon of July 31, the Pinelands Library was transformed into a chocolate factory as Willy Wonka paid children a visit and of-
fered a tour of his magical laboratory. Lucky for the kids, it was not required for them to be quiet in the library on this day as laughing,
screaming and dancing were encouraged.

Practice is keeping the Lenape
Regional High School District
prepared when it comes to school
security.
District Security and Emer-
gency Management Coordinator
Jim Kehoe reviewed the district's
security procedures at the last
board of education meeting. He
gave a detailed description of
each of the five emergency proce-
dures used by the schools, includ-
ing shelter in place, lockdowns,
evacuations, bomb threats and
fire drills.
Under state law, each school is
required to do one fire drill and
one of the four security drills per
month. Superintendent Carol
Birnbohm said the security drills
are just as important as fire drills.
We're getting the kids familiar
with the other terminology just
as much as they are familiar with
the fire drill, she said.
The drills have allowed the dis-
trict to make improvements to se-
curity. Kehoe said a number of
problems had been exposed in
past years during drills. Some of
the changes in security include
the automatic locking of class-
room doors when they are closed
and amber lights around all em-
ployee entrances to keep people
from entering a building during
an emergency.
One of the ways the district is
able to test its security is through
unannounced drills. Kehoe said
these are not required, but the
district has found them to be use-
ful when evaluating its security
protocol.
We do unannounced drills be-
cause it gives off more of a real
feel, he said.
The drills are not just for the
students. The teachers and staff
are also tested on how they re-
spond to specific situations.
Kehoe said teachers receive
training on all security proce-
dures during an orientation when
they are first hired.

Writer: Government handouts
do not make people happier
In survey after survey, for as long as I
can remember, the Danes have consistently
taken first place as the happiest people in
the world.
Pick up any tourist brochure about Den-
mark, and it will tell you!
Liberals all across the world have taken
those surveys to heart and have drawn the
connection that happiness goes hand in
hand with free education, free health care
for all, free everything.
You can scratch that theory!
A bunch of professors at Warwick Uni-
versity in the United Kingdom have taken
upon themselves to determine exactly
what makes people happy (or unhappy).
They were able to isolate economic and
sociodemographic factors, and have con-
cluded that happiness is in someone's
genes.
In other words, happiness is genetic and
nothing else!
Their research extended to Australia
and the United States, where they found
that Australians and Americans, of Danish
ancestry, and people who have never sat
foot in Denmark, were just as happy as
Danes, born and living in Denmar, even if
they had to pay for their own education
and their own health care.
The bottom line is that government
handouts do not make people any happier
or unhappier.
It's genetic!

T
he calendar just turned the
page to August, and here we
are, talking about November al-
ready. Were talking about Tuesday,
Nov. 4, to be precise. Thats the date for
the General Election this year.
Yes, temperatures may still soar to
the 90s outside right now, instead of
being in the 60s, 50s or maybe even
40s hopefully not as theyre likely to
be in November. Still, the time both we
as voters and the candidates them-
selves spend now determine what our
lives look like for the next four years.
This fall, there is no big name seat
up for election. Gov. Christie is firmly
entrenched into his post for another
few years, and a successor to President
Obama wont be selected until 2016.
In New Jersey, the two biggest elec-
tions will be for a U.S. Senate seat be-
tween Democrat Cory Booker and Re-
publican Jeff Bell, and a U.S. House of
Representatives seat (1st Congression-
al District) between Republican Garry
Cobb, Democrat Donald Norcross and
independent candidate Scot John
Tomaszewski.
But these elections are just as impor-
tant, if not more so, on a local level.
Throughout New Jersey, municipal
governing bodies and boards of educa-
tion will be holding elections to choose
new members to represent the town.
Mayors, councilmembers and school
board members often have a greater
impact on your daily life than your
governor and president.
The governor and president may be
the sexier post to vote for, but your
trash pickup, your property taxes and
your kids school curriculum has more
of an impact on your day-to-day life,
and those local post holders are the
ones who control those areas the most.
So just because you wont be voting
for the next governor or the next presi-
dent doesnt mean you shouldnt be in
tune with this Novembers elections
and this Novembers issues.
We at The Sun will be providing you
as much election coverage as we possi-
bly can this fall, especially when there
is a contested election at the municipal
level.
If your town has a contested munici-
pal election, expect a full, multi-week
Meet the Candidates series where well
provide you all the detailed informa-
tion about the election itself, as well as
profiles of the candidates and their
stances on the issues that are impor-
tant to you.
If you have any questions that youd
like us to ask the candidates, please
feel free to email us at the address to
the right.
So while you may still be making
trips to the beach and thinking about
back to school or the start of football
instead of heading to the polls, dont
fall behind on the issues at hand. What
happens behind those curtains in No-
vember could have a profound impact
on what happens in front of them for
the next four years.

Konstantinos Scholarship Golf
Tournament at Little Mill Coun-

With their entry fee, golfers
were treated to lunch, prizes, a

raised going to scholarships for
students throughout the four
schools in the Lenape Regional

The annual scholarships honor
the memory of K. Kiki Konstanti-

superintendent who held the posi-
tion for 30 years from 1963 to his
retirement in 1993.
Each year, a total of 16 stu-

are awarded a $2,000 scholarship,
and this year the foundation will

All new teachers have 60 days
to complete the training, he said.
The district makes sure its
staff is also up to speed. Drills are
reviewed during teacher in-serv-
ice days. All teachers and staff re-
view a book with every detail of
what their responsibilities are
during one of the emergency situ-
ations. Substitute teachers go
through the same training.
The school district has been
able to put some of its measures
to practice. The district's emer-
gency notification system sends
email text notifications to com-
municate potentially dangerous
situations to parents. Kehoe said
one of the issues today has been
kids going to social media and re-
leasing information prematurely.
The notification system allows
the schools to act quicker than
ever before.
Our main priority is to secure
the scene and make sure the kids
are safe, Kehoe said. (The noti-
fication system) has made
the whole transition a lot
faster.
While the district has made
large improvements in security,
Kehoe said it will continue to
evaluate drill performance and
make additional improvements
in the future.

ty out of all participants.
Honestly, I was in a daze, she
said. I was so shocked because I
didnt know I was going to win.
The charities Rosen and the
other participants raised money
for were the Sunshine Founda-
tion helping chronically ill chil-
dren, the HERO Campaign for
Designated Drivers and the
Ocean City Food Cupboard.
Each participant receives a
sponsor to help them raise money.
Rosens sponsor was Johnsons
Popcorn.
They give us bins and they let
us put them all over the city and
where our sponsor stores are,
she said.
Rosen made sure to get to know
the charities for which she was
raising money. She saw firsthand
what the HERO Campaign for
Designated Drivers does for the
community. The HERO Campaign
is an organization dedicated to
ending drunk driving. In 2000,
John Elliott, a Naval Academy
graduate, was struck and killed
by a drunk driver. Following his
death, his parents found the
HERO Campaign.
Johns father, Bill, spoke to
Rosen and her classmates at Bish-
op Eustace Prep last year on the
anniversary of his sons death.
It was such a great speech he
gave, and I know it was very hard
for him to say, Rosen said. It
was really nice for him to talk
about that.
Rosen and her family also help
charities in their free time, volun-
teering with the Ronald McDon-
ald House in South Jersey. Meet-
ing with people from the three
charities in this years Night in
Venice was one of the highlights
of Rosens experience.
It was so much fun, she said.
It felt so good seeing them and
seeing how much they helped
their charities.
Rosens lasting memory of the
event is riding at the bow of a
boat carrying the Miss Night in
Venice participants during the
boat parade on July 26. Cruising
down the bay, waving to the crowd
with the crown on her head and
the Miss Night in Venice ribbon
draped over her shoulder is some-
thing she will never forget.
It was so exciting, she said. I
saw all of my family and friends,
and they were cheering me on. I
also watched the other boats. To
be Miss Night in Venice was
amazing.

Foundation Co-Chairperson
and Evesham Township Council
member Steve Zeuli was on hand
at the event to greet guests and
oversee the events success.
Zeuli said Konstantinos amaz-
ing 30-year career as superintend-
ent was unheard of, and Konstan-
tinos should be remembered for
setting the high standard of ex-
cellence the district still achieves
to this day.
He is the one that I believe
that set the tone for the excellence
in the district, Zeuli said. If you
were able to ask him, I think that
would be the thing that hes most
proud of, the standard of excel-
lence that he set, not just for the
students, but for the faculty and
the staff.
A separate committee within
the foundation determines schol-
arship recipients through the use
of standards set by Konstantinos
himself, and Zeuli said he be-
lieves thats why people can look
at the past recipients and see
truly deserving students.
There are standards that were
set up by Kiki himself, Zeuli
said. He emphasized academics,
athletics and activities, and its
got to be an equal combination of
all those things. I think if you
look at the past winners, youll
see some really terrific kids.
This years event, like past
events, was almost at full capaci-
ty, and Zeuli said it always gets a
great reception.
Well have 120 golfers here
today, Zeuli said at the tourna-
ment. I think we can take
around 122 or 124. Its a full day
lunch, golf, cocktails, dinner, a lot
of raffle prizes, and we have
never had a rainout in 22 years.
One golfer at the event was
Greg D'Orazio from AJM Insur-
ance, which sponsored the lunch
before the start of the tourna-
ment.
DOrazio said the foundation
and the scholarships it provides
were definitely worth supporting.
Theyre great things to be able
to support in the community and
for local businesses to be able to
give back, DOrazio said. It
means a lot. Were happy to par-
ticipate, absolutely. Im looking
forward to it.
Echoing DOrazios sentiments
was John Comegno, with John
Comegno Law Group, one of the
events sponsors for the past
decade.
Comegno said his group ad-
mires the phenomenal education-
al services the district provides,
and hes glad the foundation pro-
vides a way that allows people to
support the Lenape District and
its students.
Ive played in this for close to
20 years, Comegno said. Its a
really fun outing, a great spirit.
Little Mill is a great track, and the
foundation does a great job of or-
ganizing this.
