The main purpose of establishing Guided Wave Analysis LLC (GWA) in 2007
is to spread MsS technology worldwide through training and consulting in order to
ensure proper use of the MsS technology. The technology incorporated in the MsS
System was developed by Southwest Research Institute

(SwRI

), a Texas nonprofit
corporation.
The MsS System was commercialized primarily for inspecting and monitoring
pipeline. It is used to generate a non-dispersive guided wave for long-range ultrasonic
inspection and monitoring through rapid surveying of pipes to detect internal and external
corrosion. Theapplicationareasof theMsSsystemaretoinspect andmonitor:
- Pipingsystemsinoil, gas, andpetrochemical facilities
- Offshorepipingsystems/risers
- Power generationpipingsystems
- Roadcrossings/leveepenetrations
- Elevatedor complexpipingsystemswithlimitedclearance
- Buriedpipelines
GWA sells and leases MsS Systems to NDT servicecompanies, research institutes,
and universities, and supports these clients with consultancy, data analysis, supply of
accessories, personnel training, andon-sitetraininganddemonstration. Theexperienceand
knowledge obtained fromclient support are used for upgrading MsS technology through
researchanddevelopment at theSensor SystemsandNDE Department inSwRI

.

The MsS System is a device that electromagnetically generates and receives
ultrasonic waves in the material for long-range guided wave testing. It is composed of a
laptop computer, theMsSR3030R instrument, and MsS probes as shown in aphoto below.
TheMsS softwareinthelaptopcomputer controls parameters of theMsSR3030R, acquires
data through a USB port, analyzes data, and generates inspection report. The MsSR3030R
instrument generatestone-burst electricpulsestotheMsSprobesanddetectsinducedvoltage
generatedwhentheultrasonicguidedwavepassesthroughtheprobe.
TheMsSprobeisanultrasonictransducer consistingof ferromagneticstrips(0.10mmthick)
and ribbon cables (less than 4 mmthick) as shown in the photo. The ultrasonic wave is
generated in thethin strip and coupled to thepipethrough dry coupling, shear couplant, or
epoxybonding.
MsS Sector Probe
TheMsSsector probeis4 to12-inch-long,coveringonlysectionof pipecircumference, and
isusedfor mediumrange(5to20ft) high-resolutioninspection. It isusedfor inspectingpipe
support or pipeshoearea, wall penetration pipe, soil-air and concrete-air interfaceof pipe,
and 16-inch-OD or bigger diameter pipe including plate. Because the sector probe covers
onlysectionof pipe, itssensitivityisveryhigh, not dependingonthepipesize.

The guided wave is structure-borne ultrasonic waves that propagate along the structure
confinedandguidedby its geometric boundaries. As shownintheFigure1, theguidedwavein
thepipelinepropagatesalongthepipeaxisandreflectsfromanylocal cross-sectional areachange
such as corrosion defects. The GWT is a technique for finding defect location with the arrival
time and the velocity of guided wave and estimating the defect size with the signal amplitude.
TheGWT uses low-frequency of from5 to 250 kHz in order to havealong wavelength that is
usuallylonger thanthepipewall thicknessandtolessattenuationfor long-rangeinspection
How can inspector perform the Guided Wave Testing?
TheMsSequipment for guidedwavetestingor long-rangeultrasonictestingiscompact
andeasilyoperatedbyinspectorsinfacilities. Likeordinaryultrasonicthicknessmeasurement

ordinaryUT thicknessmeasurement inpreparationandprocedure. Theonlydifferenceisthat the
guidedwavetestingcheckdefectsalongtheaxial lengthof pipeinsteadof wall thickness
direction.

Thebigadvantageof guidedwavetestingisthat theultrasonicguidedwavetravelsalongthe
axial lengthof pipelinewithlowattenuation. Other NDT testingsuchasUT, RT, andET isspot
measurement tool withwhichthetestedareaislimitedtotheprobeinstallationlocation. Because
the axial symmetricguidedwave, torsional mode, fillsthepipecross-sectional areaand
propagatesthoughtheaxial direction, theguidedwavetestingscreens100%volumeof pipewall
for cross-sectional areachangesuchascorrosionanderosion. Thevolumetricinspectionof
pipingsignificantlyreducesthelocationfor follow-upinspection.
Theguidedwavepropagatesthroughthepipewall sothat thefollowingsareadvantages:
1. Long-lengthof pipelinecanbeinspectedgivingcomprehensiveconditioninformationina
short time.
2. Inaccessiblelocationscanbeinspected: soil-air interface, concrete-air interface(if the
concreteisnot bondedtothepipe), wall penetration, buriedpipeline, roadcrossing
pipeline, etc.
3. Longlengthof pipelinecanbescreenedwithseveral accesslocationsfor installingthe
guidedwaveprobeandfor follow-uptestingif indicationisfound. It significantlyreduces
preparationtimeandlabour for installingscaffoldof high-elevationpipeline, removing
insulationof insulatedpipeline, andexcavatingburiedpipeline.
4. Thehightemperature(upto500C) pipelinecanbeinspectedor monitoredduring
normal operationwithout removingheat tracer lines.
Theweldinpipelineplaysimportant rolesinlong-rangeguidedwavetesting. It isbigreflector
rangingfrom10to30percent dependingonoperatingfrequency, andweldbeadheight relativeto
wall thickness. It isareferenceestimatingdefect sizeincross-sectional areaandareferencefor
phasecheckingof signal. For agoodconditionof pipeline, thephaseisusedfor differentiating
defect fromgeometricfeatures. Theweldisalsousedfor determininginspectionrangeof guided
wavetesting. Becausetheweldisabigreflector, wecancalculatetheinspectionrangewiththe

The most difficult question to answer in guided wave is the inspection range. How far can your
system inspect? It depends on capability of guided wave system (how strongly generates torsional or
longitudinal mode and how much reduce the generation of flexural modes), defect size, and attenuation
(operating frequency, geometric features of pipe, corrosion condition, pipe coating, insulation, depth of
burial, andthenatureanddegreeof compactionof thesurroundingsoil).
The inspection range and defect sensitivity depends on the probe including guided wave system,
operatingfrequency, andattenuationdueto geometric featureor insulation. Withstronggenerationof axial
symmetric mode, MsS GWT systemcandetect 2to3%defectslocatedat about 150meter after passing18
girthwelds ina16-inchOD abovegroundstraight gas transmissionpipeline[PipelineandGas Technology,
August (2006), pp28-31].

Thehigh-frequencyoperationof MsSguided-wavesystemincludesmuchmerit comparedtoGUL andTeletest
