HRB Price Stagnation Continues

USA up 0.1%. China no change. World Export and Western Europe down 1.3% & 2.2%.

ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, NJ The bi-monthly SteelBenchmarkerTM United States HRB spot
price for July 28th increased 0.1% to $742 per metric tonne for the second consecutive time.
The Chinese HRB price remained flat at $450 per tonne after falling last time. The time
World export HRB price fell 1.3% to $551 per tonne after increasing last time. The Western
European HRB price fell 2.2% to $566 per tonne (on a Euro basis, it fell 0.9%) for the fifth
consecutive time.
In its two hundredth report, the SteelBenchmarkerTM released 9 steel products and 3 USA
scrap prices. Of these, here are four benchmark prices for hot-rolled band for July 28, 2014:
USA $742 per metric tonne ($673 per net ton), FOB the mill up $1 per tonne from $741
($673 nt) two weeks ago, up $105 from the recent low of $637 ($578 nt) on May 27, 2013 and
up $189 from the low of $553 per tonne ($502 nt) on Nov. 23, 2009. It is down $228 per
tonne from the recent high of $970 ($880 nt) on Mar. 28, 2011 and down $461 (38.3%) from
the record peak of $1,203 per tonne ($1,091 nt) on July 28, 2008.
China $450 per metric tonne, ex-works no change from $450 two weeks ago, up $3 per
tonne from the recent low of $447 on Sept. 10, 2012 and up $43 from the low of $407 per
tonne on Oct. 12, 2009. It is down $187 per tonne from the recent high of $637 on Aug. 22,
2011 and down $283 (38.6%) from the record peak of $733 per tonne on July 14, 2008.
Western Europe $566 (422e) per metric tonne, ex-works down $13 per tonne from $579
(426e) two weeks ago (on a Euro basis, it was down 4), down $24 (down 32) from the
recent low of $590 (454) on July 8, 2013 and down $5 (up 41) from the low of $571 (381)
per tonne on Nov. 23, 2009. It is down $286 (183) per tonne from the recent high of $852
(605) on Mar. 28, 2011 and down $638 (53.0%) (334) (44.2%) from the record peak of
$1,204 (756) per tonne on July 14, 2008.
World Export Price $551 per metric tonne, FOB the port of export down $7 per tonne
from $558 two weeks ago, up $19 from the recent low of $532 on Oct. 8, 2012 and up $55
from the low of $496 per tonne on Nov. 9, 2009. It is down $222 per tonne from the recent
high of $773 on Feb. 14, 2011 and down $562 (50.5%) from the record peak of $1,113 per
tonne on July 28, 2008.

Hot-rolled band is the first product off the hot strip mill with: (1) a thickness of about 0.20 inch
(but no less than 0.10 inch or more than 0.50 inch); (2) a coil size of 10 to 20 tons;
(3) a width of 48 to 60 inches; and (4) a carbon component of 0.08% to 0.13%.
SteelHome's average price for each product is the determinant of the Chinese ex-works benchmark price.
It is published for comparative purposes.
* Ex-works (the same as FOB mill).
** Steel scrap delivered to steel plant on a near-term basis, normally from two days to a month.
#1 heavy melting demolition scrap that is at least thick and surface dimension no larger than
60 by 24 inches. This grade does not includethe heavy p & s (plate and structural ) category that
includes the very thick scrap items.
Shredded largely old cars and some appliances for all but the West Coast (California, Oregon and Washington).
Shredded scrap is homogeneous iron and steel scrap magnetically separated, no. 1, no. 2 steel, miscellaneous
bailing and sheet scrap with an average weight from 50 to 70 pounds per square foot.
