Note: The following description of terms is mainly based
on IEC 60598 Part 1: General Requirements and tests.
1 03 01 Technical Terms
Where the terms "Voltage " and "Current " are used, they imply the (r.m.s.) values
unless otherwise stated.
air handling luminaire A luminaire through some part of which air is supplied to or
extracted from the interior of the building.
ballast - A unit inserted between the supply and one or more discharge lamps which
by means of inductance, capacitance or resistance, single or in combination, limits the
current of the lamp(s) to the required value. It also provides starting voltage and
preheating current reduces stroboscopic effect and corrects the power factor.
discharge lamp - A lamp in which the light is produced either directly or by the
excitation of phosphors by an electric discharge through a gas, a metal vapour or a
mixture of several gases and vapour.
incandescent lamp A lamp in which light is produced by a filament heated to
incandescence by the passage of an electric current.
lighting-fixture - An Apparatus which is complete with all parts (Lamps, Reflectors,
Side panels, Louvers, etc.) to give light.
luminaire - Apparatus which distributes, filters or transforms the light transmitted from
one or more lamps and which includes all the parts necessary for supporting, fixing
and protecting the lamps, but not the lamps themselves, and where necessary circuit
auxiliaries together with the means for connecting them to the supply.
luminaire accessories - All components other than the lamp and the housing
luminous efficacy The ratio of the luminous flux emitted by a lamp to the power
consumed by it (unit: lumen per watt, Lm/W).
metal halide lamp A discharge lamp in which the light is produced by the radiation
from a mixture of a metallic vapour (usually mercury) and the products of the
dissociation of halides.
rated voltage - The supply voltage or voltages assigned to the luminaire by the
manufacturer.
recessed luminaire - A luminaire intended by manufacture to be fully or partly
recessed into a mounting surface (for operation in enclosed cavities or mounted
through a surface such as a suspended ceiling).
rated maximum ambient temperature (ta) - The temperature assigned to a luminaire
by the manufacturer to indicate the highest sustained temperature in which the
luminaire may be operated under normal conditions.
tungsten halogen lamp An incandescent lamp with a gas filling containing a
proportion of halogens.
