family farm, which, before its grapes, nurtured
crops from sweet potatoes to Christmas trees. The
caretakers of that land are now moving into the fifth
generation, and the farms unique soil and climate host
vineyards producing widely known varietals and
entertaining thousands of wine lovers every year.
Jim Quarella, founder and president of Bellview

crafting fine wines exclusively from the grapes that are
cultivated on its 40 acres and include over 20 estate-

and specialty grapes for wines including a port and an
ice-style wine.
He said Bellview has become well known for its dan-

immersed in the wine culture and every
day holds a new challenge; also, Ive had
the privilege of watching our industry
grow into something magnificent.
Bellviewwas among the first area winer-
ies to start a tasting roomand has estab-
lished a pattern of well-attended indoor and
outdoor events over the past dozen years.
I like to think that our tasting roomand
our events have become so popular because
we are approachable, down to earth, and do
our best to make sure the customer always
feels comfortable, said Zych. We arent
just a winery, we are part of the community.
The tasting room is open from 10 a.m.
until 5 p.m. seven days a week. The staff
guides patrons through a tasting and gener-
ally introduce them to New Jersey wines.
Patrons are invited to bring lunch or order
from the light fare menu that includes a
variety of meats, cheeses, and dips. Theres
a shady picnic area and indoor seating.
Bellview hosts private events and offers
a number of other services including paid
tours, custom labels, and gift baskets. Tours
are available every Saturday by appoint-

BELLVIEW
(Continued from cover)
TRANSITION TO GRAPES (courtesy Bellview Winery)
Jim Quarella has always had a love for growing things. Working on the family farm
with his father, Joe, and mother, Lettie, since early childhood fostered an appreciation
in him for all things agricultural. At 16, Jim and some of his friends had an acre of
vineyard that they tended for fun. However, as they got older the responsibilities of
adulthood prevailed and the vineyard fell by the wayside. Twenty-five years later Jim
found himself dissatisfied with the vegetable market and was looking for a new direc-
tion. After some reflection, it seemed that pursuing his dream of opening a winery
was the natural direction for Bellview.
The evolution began in 1999 with the planting of three acres of grapevines and
the conversion of an old barn on the original 20-acre homestead into a tasting room
and winery. The renovated building that is todays winery houses Angelos original
wine cellar where, for decades, Quarellas have made their wines. The new Bellview
Winery opened to the public a year later and quickly became a landmark in Landisville.
Jim and his wife, Nancy, faced many challenges as they steered Bellview through
its infancy, but also enjoyed major successes in the form of newspaper editorials
and medals earned at wine competitions. As the winery grew, a larger production
area was added, the vineyard was expanded and the tasting room renovated. Jims
youngest son, Scott, who will be the fifth generation to tend to their estate, is the
future of Bellview Winery. The 100th anniversary of Bellview was celebrated in June
with a wine festival and fireworks.

T
he final incident in the Jonas
Glass Works strike to earn
national attention occurred in
October 1903 and did not
include factory owner George Jonas or any
of his managers. And while members of
the Glass Bottle Blowers Association were
involved, the attention was on Alfred
DeMaio, a Vineland resident who acted as
official interpreter for the union, translating
for the largely Italian work crew who had
been on strike since April 1902. And taking
the accounts published in the Evening
Journal and the New York Times on
October 20 and 21, 1903, its possible to put
together a clear picture of the incidents
that surrounded DeMaio.
It seems that the striking workers, who
had left their positions at the Jonas factory
18 months earlier, had been paid by the
union during the summer of 1903. In addi-
tion, the picketers had been allowed to
work their farms during that time. As
winter approached, DeMaio suggested that
strikers engage in guard duty at night. The
translator told the Evening Journal that he
simply wanted to do the square thing
between the union and the men based on
the circumstances permitted during the
summer.
The recommendation immediately met
with disapproval from the strikers, but the
guard duty was put into effect the follow-
ing night, during which a volley of shots
was fired at the union headquarters. The
Evening Journal reports that the shots
were fired at or over the top of the strik-
ers camp building during the hours of the
night. The New York Times states that the
shots were fired into the roof of the camp
building. No one was hurt by the gunfire,
but DeMaio told the Journal that he
learned that the guardsmen did the shoot-
ing themselves so as to make the union
managers believe that their lives were in
danger and thus get relieved from duty.
A letter or postcard (sources vary on
this) was then delivered to DeMaio, the
contents of which the New York Times
reprinted: You are a marked man and
liable to feel the knife. You must stop your
work and leave the country, or we will kill
you. We are banded together and will never
let up until you leave or go under the sod.
The interpreter claimed that he had
discovered who was behind the letter and
sent a friend to attend a midnight meeting
in the woods arranged by these individu-
als. The New York Times reports that an
oath was taken among the men who then
proceeded to lay plans to take [DeMaios]
life.
Warrants were issued for the arrests of
six individuals who were charged with
shooting at and above the union camp
building. Deputy Sheriff Joseph Spenser
spent a day in Minotola, presumably to
arrest those behind the midnight meeting
that reportedly organized plans for
DeMaios death. However, no arrests were
made as the individuals involved were
expected to turn themselves in.
DeMaio told the Evening Journal that
he was going to stay in Vineland, that he
would soon open a real estate office and
as he liked the town he would stay among
his friends.
When the Evening Journal picked up
the story four days later, a tedious hear-
ing for those unnamed individuals who
apparently surrendered to the law had
already commenced. DeMaios legal coun-
cil was by two lawyers named Stevens and
Berault, while the defendants were repre-
sented by L.H. Miller. But like so many of
the events associated with the Jonas Glass
Works strike, the press trail goes cold.
Media coverage, which had been limited
from the start, would begin to wane. The
New York Times would run only one more
story on the strike, only to commemorate
its two-year anniversary in April 1904.
Even the Annual Report of the Bureau of
Statistics of Labor and Industry of New
Jersey, which maintained records of the
strike during its first year, omits the events
that occurred in Minotola in 1903 and
1904 and does not acknowledge the con-
tinuing strike when it again reports on this
area in 1905.
Next week, well take a look at the
remaining years of the strike and how
George Jonas made one more attempt at
legal action against the union. I

Senior Care of Vineland
Awarded Alzheimers Grant
Senior Care Centers of America has
announced that he New Jersey
Department of Human Services Division
of Aging has awarded Senior Care of
Vineland the Alzheimers Adult Day
Services Program Grant. This grant par-
tially subsidizes adult day care services for
those with Alzheimers disease or a relat-
ed dementia.
If youre the primary caregiver of
someone with Alzheimers disease or a
related dementia, you may have experi-
enced the opportunity of providing care
for your loved one. At times, the chal-
lenges of that role can be overwhelming
for the best of caregivers. Although a care-
giver may love the individual dearly,
sometimes its just too much for one per-
son to handle. Adult day services provide a
welcome respite for caregivers while
assuring the happiness, health, and safety
of their loved one during the day.
To be eligible for the program, an older
adult must meet the following criteria:
Have a diagnosis documented by a
licensed physician of Alzheimers disease
or a related dementia,
Be routinely supervised by an infor-
mal caregiver,
Reside in the community,
Have documented evidence of eligi-
bility according to income guidelines,
Be a resident of the state of NewJersey,
Senior Care Centers of America has 75
locations across the country and 12 loca-
tions within New Jersey to help families
successfully manage the responsibility of
caring for an elderly or frail adult who is
living at home while enhancing the quality
of life for those individuals in need of care.
Senior Care of Vineland, located at
2695 S. Lincoln Avenue in Vineland, pro-
vides transportation to and from the
clients home to the center Monday
through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and
Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participants
enjoy a five-hour program, beginning the
day with breakfast followed by a schedule
of various activities. A full, hot meal is
offered at lunch with more afternoon
activities and then a return home at the
end of the day.

Jersey Peach Season is Now
The New Jersey Department of
Agriculture has reported that it is now
New Jersey peach season and peaches can
be found in supermarkets, roadside
stands, farmers markets and pick-your
own farms.
New Jersey peaches are healthy and
delicious and available in abundance
throughout the state, said New Jersey
Secretary of Agriculture Douglas H.
Fisher, shown here enjoying a Jersey
peach. They are great on their own or
used in baked goods and preserves.
New Jersey is one of the nations top
growers of
peaches. In
2013, farmers
grew 36.2
million
pounds of
peaches on
4,500 acres
valued at
$27.2 million.
To find
Jersey Fresh peaches, search for farmers
markets, pick-your-own farms and road-
side markets on the Jersey Fresh website
at www.jerseyfresh.nj.gov. Also, check out
Jersey Fresh peach recipes at
http://bit.ly/1x7KZd6.
The first peach variety of New Jerseys
season is the Sentry. The crop then moves
into the Gala and Flavorcrest varieties and
finishes with the Loring and Red Haven
varieties followed by the John Boy season.
New Jersey then moves into the Crest
Haven variety season, which also includes
the Gloria variety of peach, followed by
Jersey Queen and Fayette varieties. The
Encore and Laurol varieties will wrap up
the season sometime in mid- to late-
September, when the last of New Jerseys
peaches should be picked. White peaches
are expected to continue shipping through
mid-September.
A half-cup sliced fresh peaches is just
30 calories and provides 10 percent of the
daily recommended amount of vitamin C.
Ripe peaches should be stored in the
refrigerator in a plastic bag for up to five
days. Rinse peaches in cool water and dry
before eating.

Deerfield Township Harvest
Festival Needs Sponsors,
Announces Headliners
The 36th Deerfield Township Harvest
Festival on October 10, 11 and 12 will
Make You Smile with a weekend of fam-
ily fun, music and saluting our farming
heritage on Columbus Day Weekend.
Your business or organizations spon-
sorship and ad help the Harvest Festival
continue its tradition as one of southern
New Jerseys most popular fall events.
The festival will include tried-and-true
standards that the whole family can
enjoychildrens fun, SingFest Contest,
Baking Contest, Mascot Mania, a multicul-
tural food court, parade, arts and crafts,
games, amusement rides and sports col-
lectibles, community, business and home
improvement displays.
The festival continues its tradition of
providing a stellar variety of national,
regional and local musical entertainment
to the thousands of visitors who attend
each year. The festival is becoming a place
to catch new and rising bands that may
well be top national talents soon. An up-
to-date list of entertainers and special
events for the festival can be found on the
festival website, dthf.org.
Lonestar will headline the Harvest
Festival on Saturday October 11, with a
performance beginning at 8:30 p.m. on the
Festival stage. In 2008, for the Festivals
30th anniversary, public safety officials
estimated that 15,000 people filled the
Festival grounds to enjoy Lonestar.
On Sunday, October 12 at 8:30 p.m,
Uncle Kracker will bring the Festival to an
exciting ending. His concert in 2011, drew
one of the Festivals largest crowds ever
with Festival attendees asking for him to
return. That encore performance is set for
October 12 this year.
The Festival Parade is set for October
11, the Festival SingFest Contest (formerly
Idol Contest) preliminary competition is
October 10 with the finals on October 12.
While we really appreciate the sup-
port of our major sponsors, we continue to
need the support of many other area busi-
nesses as sponsors and advertisers to keep
this an affordable event, said Roy
Spoltore, festival chairman.
This is an opportunity to get in touch
with the community, but also to help busi-
nesses, said Tony Stanzione publicity
chairman. Sponsorships, which range
from a Major Sponsor for a $5,000 dona-
tion, to $60 for a 3x2-inch advertisement,
are also being promoted.
The deadline for ads and sponsorships
is August 30. Information about sponsor-
ships, the order form and general informa-
tion about the festival is available online at

Downtown Vineland
{ BY GARY HOLLOWAY, EXEC. DIRECTOR, VDID / MAINSTREET VINELAND }
I
A
s many of you may already know, I
will no longer be the Executive
Director of VDID/Main Street
Vineland after August 9. I have accepted a
position as the Downtown Program
Coordinator for the State of Vermont. This
comes as a bittersweet change in my life, as
I have dedicated the past four years to
downtown Vineland. My new position will
allow me to work with downtown commu-
nities all over the State of Vermont and I
will take with me the experience I have
gained here in Vineland.
I came to Vineland in 2010 to help
develop Landis MarketPlace into an anchor
in the downtown. Prior to accepting that
position, I sat in my car on a snowy
February day across the street from what is
now Landis MarketPlace. I asked myself
the question, How in the world are we
going to develop this building into a thriv-
ing marketplace in this town? I knew that
if we could gain the support of the commu-
nity and create a destination with quality
businesses and a good atmosphere, people
would come. Now, four years later, the
Market draws over 200,000 customers
annually from all over the area. Many peo-
ple helped to make this project a success,
including City officials, private businesses
and the community.
I encourage all of you to work together
to help create the vision for the future of
Vineland. The best success stories in towns
across this country have not happened by
accident. It takes courage to get into the
trenches, pull up your sleeves, and say,
This is my community and I am going to
do something about it! Its easier to give
up and not do anything than it is to do the
hard work necessary. The government may
be able to do a better job of some things,
but a role also exists that each of you plays
in making a difference. Decide what your
role is and make it happen!
I was not able to accomplish certain
things that I wanted to do in my time here
in Vineland, but I believe that the new
Executive Director will help to lead Main
Street Vineland in a positive direction. The
Board and volunteers have stuck it out
through thick and thin and are the true
backbone of the organization. I feel confi-
dent in departing knowing that a group of
dedicated community leaders exists. Your
support is welcome anytime!
I would like to thank all of you for your
support the last four years. I would not
have been able to achieve what we have
without your help. My time here in
Vineland has been enjoyable and I will miss
the connections I have had with many of
you. I am on to new adventures in
Vermont, but I hope the seeds I have plant-
ed will continue to grow here in Vineland.
***
Heres another reminder of the Vineland
Food & Wine Festival this coming
Saturdaythe last event I will be handling
here as Executive Director. The event is
detailed in a story starting on the cover of
this issue of The Grapevine. I

Happy 14th Birthday
To Jayde Anneliese who celebrated on August 3rd. Every
year that passes you get closer to becoming the woman I
always dreamed you would be. You turned out just per-
fect. Shine Bright like a diamond Princess!
Love,
Mommy, Angel, Bobby Jr. and Ignatius.
Eight Inches Donated
Isabela Saltar, daughter of Alexandra
Saltar, donated eight inches of her hair
to Children With Hair Loss, a non-
profit organization that gives hair
replacements to any child with med-
ical hair loss.
She did this last month when her
dance recital finished, after she no
longer needed to put her long hair in a
bun. And just prior to swim season,
before the chlorine had a chance to
damage her donated locks!
A Night in Paris
The Woman's Club of Vineland, a member
of the General Federation of Women's
Clubs held their annual Summer Salad
Supper in June at their clubhouse. June
Lang, chairman for the event, dressed in
her Can-Can outfit as the theme of the
evening was A Night in Paris. All the
decorations were Paris-related which
included an Eiffel Tower. The club members
were serenaded by a local singer, Kaitlyn
Cox, who was accompanied on the piano
played by Wendy Gardner. They performed
several musical selections from Phantom
of the Opera and also La Vie En Rose.
Pictured is June Lang dressed as a Can-
Can girl.

Information
My daughter has been dancing since she was
four years old. We moved to this area five years
ago and started looking for a dance school. A
current dance parent recommended Pizzazz. I
am so lucky she did. Amanda has grown in her
confidence and technique as a dancer. The
teachers are fantastic. They treat the students
with respect and kindness. My daughter loves to
attend dance class.
Amanda will attend Pizzazz for her entire dance
career. The school really is a wonderful learn-
ing environment with dedicated teachers who go
above and beyond just teaching.

This is a multi-celebrationa celebra-
tion of fine food, wine, entertainment, out-
door artistry, and, one day late, Vinelands
birthday, said Main Street Vineland
Executive Director Gary Holloway. I cant
think of a better way to celebrating all those
things than by going downtown to the
Avenue and having a great time. We look for-
ward to building on this for next year.
This event is supported in part by a grant
from the New Jersey Department of State,
Division of Travel & Tourism. This grant is
administered by the Cumberland County
Cultural and Heritage Commission and
Tourism Advisory Council.

CUMBERLAND COUNTY TECHNICAL EDUCATION CENTER AND DOWNE TOWNSHIP SCHOOL DISTRICT }
I
Educating Capable
Workforce Members
T
his month, 28 local students will
reach their graduation milestone
after completing Cumberland
County Technical Education
Centers Licensed Practical Nursing
Program. Since 1969 nearly 1,300 nursing
graduates have completed their studies at
the school to go on to fulfill the variety of
health care opportunities in the area.
Our newest graduates will eventually
serve as successful contributors at local
medical offices, surgical centers, rehabilita-
tion facilities, health-related clinics and
homecare services after they pass the
required nursing exam. While the national
average for those who pass the National
Council of State Boards of Nursing exam
upon their first try is below 84 percent, the
average for Cumberland County Technical
Education Centers students is a remarkable
97 percent. In fact, local students of
Cumberland County Technical Education
Centers Licensed Practical Nursing
Program have averaged a well-above average
annual passing rate for more than 30 years.
Im proud to say last years entire class of
33 students completing Cumberland County
Technical Education Centers nursing pro-
gram, passed the national nursing standards
exam after completing our 11-month pro-
gram. Most important, is that all 33 licensed
practical nurses are now placed and actively
working in the health care field. While this
accomplishment is a testament not only to
the school, our staff
and, of course, our
hard-working stu-
dents, it qualifies our
county as providing
the resources neces-
sary to successfully
meet our correlating
education and workforce demands.
Our innovative career and technical edu-
cation tracks include many allied-health
programs such as nursing, pharmacology,
dental and sports medicine. Other fields of
study are related to automotive technolo-
gies, construction trades, cosmetology, culi-
nary science, engineering, information tech-
nology and law and homeland security.
At CCTEC, assimilations of the actual
workplace help bridge the gap between tra-
ditional classroom teaching and real, hands-
on career learning experiences. Our stu-
dents are prepared to pursue college-level
studies or to enter the job market directly
upon completing their program of choice so
that area businesses can continue to effec-
tively grow their workforce.
For 43 years, Cumberland County has
been providing technical education to high
school students and career-focused adults
from Vineland, Millville, Bridgeton,
Hopewell, Shiloh, and Commercial,
Deerfield, Downe, Fairfield, Greenwich,
Lawrence, Maurice River, Stow Creek and
Upper Deerfield townships.
After more than four decades,
Cumberland County Technical Education
Center will be transitioning to a full-time
high school curriculum beginning in 2016.
The new and more accessible facility will
enable the county to offer a single, fully
integrated high school experience to guar-
antee students receive a more focused and
formative secondary education.
Cumberland County Technical
Education Centers vision is to ensure that
all area students possess the knowledge and
experience necessary to make meaningful
career decisions, be productive in the work-
place and develop lifelong skills to function
independently in their community.
Programs like our allied-health curriculums
are helping us to achieve our vision and
more importantly, our career and technical
education is providing Cumberland County
with a more capable and resourceful work-
force for which we can all be proud. I

Bridgeton Invitational "Hit

Field, 2 Burt St., Bridgeton. 7
p.m. Held as part of the 48th
annual Bridgeton Invitational
Tournament, the open air con-
cert will be held immediately
following a celebrity softball
game. There will be a field of
22 individuals, including
Sherry Lynn, performing on
stage in the center of Alden
Field. Other performing artists
include Madison VanMeter, Emily Bernstein,
Karen Stebbins, Alex Mary, Sara Penka, Shannon
Livewell, Jaycee Roberts, Ayla Gentiletti,

Country recording artist Sherry Lynn, a native
of Woodbury, NJ, made her Grand Ole Opry debut last year when she and Crystal
Gayle performed their duet for fans in Music City. Sherry also entertained audiences
during the week of CMA Music Festival 2013 and this year, she performed at the
AT&T U-verse and Nashville Convention & Visitors Corp. Festival stages.
"It all seems unreal sometimes," says the entertainer. "In reality, I'm a mom
with five kids and I still do all the things that 'regular' folks do. I just happen to
sing for a living."
Sherry now splits her time between her home state and the bright lights of
Nashville. I do have to be in Nashville quite a bit, explains the lovely brunette.
But I do still love to play for the hometown crowds. In fact, Sherry recently per-
formed two shows during the National Special Olympics Games being held in the
Princeton, NJ, area.
The songs she sings are primarily from her current CD, which was produced by
Ted Hewitt, the studio wizard behind Rodney Atkins string of hits; Crystal Gayles
son Christos Gatzimos engineered the project. The disc features tunes by stellar
songwriters like Danny Wells (Check Yes Or No, These Days); Kelley Lovelace,
who (with Wells) co-penned Girls Will Be Girls and wrote eight Brad Paisley #1s,
and ASCAP 2009 Songwriter of the Year Ashley Gorley, who took Carrie
Underwood to the top with All-American Girl and Good Girl. Also contributing
are Edward Monroe Hill, a George Strait hit-maker, and Karyn Rochelle, noted for
writing Trisha Yearwoods This Is Me Youre Talking To and Kelly Picklers I
Wonder and Red High Heels.
For everything Ive accomplished, there are a million more to go. There are a
lot of things in the works right now, Lynn confides. More music, more shows,
more everything. This is the journey of a lifetime for me.
Its a trip Sherrys fans are more than willing to undertake; follow along at
www.sherrylynnmusic.com.
Country and western star Sherry Lynn will appear with more than 20 other singers
during an open-air concert at the field on August 9. Almost all female, the performers
are mostly local and some are talented teens and children.
