Catching Up
The Fragile Web environment centre opens in Blackbutt
On 4th July, people gathered to listen to the music, enjoy afternoon tea and meet up
with friends at the opening of The Fragile Web, an environment centre in Blackbutt.
Annette Schumachers beautiful photos of our local native flowers along the rail trail
and a range of ethical gifts and fair trade items have transformed the old Medical
Centre in Blackbutt.
Following an entertaining rendition of Graham Jenkins ballad, The Birdsville Drover,
Alexandra Moreno performed the official opening. Next there was a song written by
Scott Reilly from the Friends of
Yarraman Creek group. With the chorus
of plant a tree ringing in peoples ears,
Alexandra did just that and planted the
first tree in the Incredible Edible garden
at the rear of the building.
It was great to attend and see the
dedication of Wendy, Ray and their
supporters who have no doubt spent
countless hours setting up the centre in
an effort to promote awareness of the
natural environment, so if you are travelling through Blackbutt be sure to call in.
Wendy is presently opening the Fragile Web on Monday, Wednesday and Friday
afternoons from midday to 4 pm (or when the open sign is out).

Landholders welcomed to explore Land for Wildlife properties
During the month of May, 25 Land for Wildlife properties across the region opened up
their gates to other Land for Wildlife members in order to share knowledge,
experiences and celebrate this vibrant, voluntary conservation program.
The properties and their management were diverse beef grazing enterprises, eco-
tourism, weekender getaway blocks, large Nature Refuge properties and tree-
changer lifestyle blocks. Despite these differences, there was a commonality of
purpose and dedication. All landowners want to leave their properties in better
condition than when they bought them and all are actively managing their properties
to reduce weeds and provide habitat for wildlife.
The 2014 Open Property Scheme was the largest single event that SEQ Catchments
has managed, with 25 properties and 450 participants. Many participants reported
that they will try new things on their own properties based on what they saw during
the Scheme.

Drivers of Practice Change in Australian Agriculture
A recently released report from ABARES, a research bureau within the
Department of Agriculture, provides information on the adoption of specific land
management practices by Australian farm managers. The report identifies key
factors influencing farmers decisions to adopt or not, including key barriers and
participation in various programs and extension activities such as Landcare,
farmer network groups or regional NRM bodies. Click here for the full report.

responsible for well over half of total output and capital investment, as well as
performing significantly stronger in terms of profitability. Click here for full report.
