1. INTRODUCTION
Benshaw has prepared this Specification Guide for engineers, plant maintenance personnel, and electrical consultants who
need to specify solid state reduced voltage motor starters.
The Benshaw RediStart Micro II is a microprocessor controlled solid state reduced voltage starter for three phase induction
motors. The starter provides a closed loop current ramp for smooth step-less motor acceleration.
2. SCOPE
This specification outlines the fabrication, performance, and functional specifications for microprocessor based, solid-state
motor controls designed and manufactured by Benshaw, Inc. for application on NEMA design A through F induction motors
as well as wound rotor and synchronous motors. The RediStart Micro II solid state starter shall meet the requirements as
specified herein.
2.1 CODES & STANDARDS

3. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
3.1 AMBIENT TEMPERATURES & HUMIDITY
Nominal ambient temperature: 0 - 40

Relative humidity: up to 95% (non-condensing).
3.2 STORAGE REQUIREMENTS
The RediStart Micro II starter may be stored for up to two years before being installed. However, starter power terminations
should be connected to full line voltage for one hour per year to maintain the voltage rating on the electrolytic capacitors.
This will prevent short circuits when the system is powered up.
If the starter is to be stored, the following recommendations apply:
_ Ambient Temperature: -40C (-40F) minimum to 70C (158F) maximum
_ Temperature Rate of Change: 6C in 30 minutes
_ Humidity (non-condensing): 20% minimum to 95% maximum
_ Humidity Rate of Change: 10% in 30 minutes

3.3 OPERATING ALTITUDE
The operating altitude shall not exceed 3300 feet (1000M) above sea level without de-rating.
4. MECHANICAL CONSTRUCTION
4.1 STARTER CONSTRUCTION
The starter contains a six (6) SCR power section with two (2) SCRs per phase connected inverse parallel for variable AC
output voltage with minimal motor and starter heating. The power section is capable of providing maximum torque per amp
throughout the motor's speed-torque curve. The logic control consists of two boards. The power card provides the gating
drive to the SCRs while the computer card performs all of the necessary starter functions.
The starter will be supplied as a chassis or in an enclosure. Enclosures are available in NEMA 1, NEMA 3R, NEMA 4,
NEMA 12, and NEMA 12V (ventilated enclosure with filter elements) configurations.
4.2 STRUCTURE FINISH
When supplied enclosed, the enclosure shall be coated under the following paint specification:

NOTE: Structural components that are not painted shall be finished with a zinc plate/bronze chromate process to inhibit
corrosion.
4.3 MECHANICAL/ELECTRICAL LAYOUT
The Benshaw RediStart Micro II consists of the following major components: Line (L1, L2, L3)/load (T1, T2, T3) lugs sized
to accommodate power wire rated at 125% of continuous current per the National Electrical Code at 75C, a six (6) SCR
power section with SIOV protection, a power control printed circuit board, computer control printed circuit board, an LCD
keypad/display, provisions for optional 2 or 3 wire 120 VAC control, and three current transformers for feedback to the
controller. For starters in the range of 1 through 124 Amps, an isolated heatsink design using dual SCR flat packs is used
with natural convection cooling. For starters in the range of 125 - 1200 Amps, hockey puck type SCRs in live heatsink, with
120VAC cooling fans, are utilized. One over-temperature switch per phase is used to shut off the starter in the event of an
over-temperature condition. As options, disconnects, inline contactors and integral bypass contactors can also be supplied.
4.4 SEISMIC QUALIFICATIONS
The enclosures are designed and manufactured to meet the Uniform Building Code section on Non-building structures,
section 2338 for Zone 1, 2, 3, and 4 requirements.

5.2 THREE YEAR WARRANTY
Every RediStart Micro II is supplied with a 1-year warranty. The warranty can be extended to 3-years by completing and
returning the warranty registration card supplied with the starter.
5.3 GENERAL LOGIC CONTROL CONFIGURATION
The RediStart Micro II is supplied standard with programming buttons and local start/stop buttons on one main keypad with
the LCD display. Provisions for optional two or three wire 120 VAC or optional 240VAC remote control is provided at a
terminal block on the starter.
The standard electronic control logic which is located on a single microprocessor-based PC card provides the sequential logic
as well as gating signals to the power card. The power card is used to drive the SCRs. The control system is designed to
implement the required sequential logic to start and stop the motor as well as operate an optional bypass contactor and/or in-
line isolation contactor. The control logic is designed to perform the timing required for operation while continuously
monitoring motor and starter operation for faults. If a fault is detected, the control logic provides the fault indication via a
LCD display, DeviceNet, and/or via an optional RS-232/485 communication port. In the event of a fault condition, the
control logic safely shuts down the starter to disable the motor. The PC cards are the same and interchangeable between all
starters.

5.4 POWER REQUIREMENTS
The RediStart Micro II starters are designed to operate with three-phase AC power at the following nominal voltages:
_ Line Voltage: Three Phase, 200 to 600 VAC (optional to 1000V), 23 to 72hz
_ Control Voltage: 120 (optional 240) VAC, 50 to 60hz, single phase 15%
If a control transformer is supplied with the RediStart Micro II, the operating voltage will be specified on the unit's rating
label.

5.6 PROTECTION AND CONTROL FEATURES
The logic control incorporates a microcomputer, which consists of all of the circuitry required to drive the power
semiconductors that are located in the power section. The logic provides the following standard features:

5.7 PROGRAMMABLE RELAY OUTPUTS
Each RediStart Micro II is provided with two (2) programmable relays. The relays are programmable via the keypad and do
not require any hardware modifications. Each programmable relay can be set to one of the following:
_ OL - The thermal overload has tripped.
_ OLL - The thermal overload is locking out starter operation.
_ OLW - The thermal overload is above 90% content and about to trip.
_ RUN - The starter is providing power to the motor.
_ UTS - The motor is running at full speed.
_ SCR - The starter has detected a shorted SCR.
_ SHT - Provides a shunt trip output for tripping a circuit breaker.
_ GDF - Changes state when a ground fault condition is detected.
_ OCT - Changes state when an over-current condition is detected.
_ UCT - Changes state when an under-current condition is detected.
_ FBp - Energize a bypass contactor connected for the forward direction.
_ RBp - Energize a bypass contactor connected for the reverse direction.
_ FvR - The starter is providing power in the forward direction.
_ RvR - The starter is providing power in the reverse direction.
_ FUS - The motor is running at full speed in the forward direction.
_ RUS - The motor is running at full speed in the reverse direction.
_ J OG - Starter is operating in the jog at set speed mode.

Each RediStart Micro II has the capability to display the following information.

5.9 GENERAL FAULT RELAY
The previous selectable outputs are provided in addition to a fixed, latched, form C general fault relay output. This general
fault relay shall indicate if any of the following trips occur:
_ Line Phase Loss.
_ Line Phase Imbalance.
_ Low Three Phase Line.
_ Line Phase Sequence Change.
_ Motor Thermal Overload Trip.
_ Battery Backup Failure (Computer PC Card).
_ Instantaneous Over-current Trip.
_ Shorted SCR Fault.
_ Three Phase Line Frequency Deviation.
_ Control Power Failure.
_ Computer Error.
_ Up to Speed Fault.
_ Under Current Trip.
_ Over Current (Shearpin) Trip.

Fault Contact Rating is 1 Amp Inductive, 2 Amp Resistive, 100VA maximum inrush.
5.10 PROGRAMMABLE FAULT HANDLING
Each fault can be programmed to behave differently depending on the user preferences. This allows the user to program the
fault behavior to match the required starter operation. Each fault can be set to one of the following options;
_ Critical - The fault will trip the starter and will never reset automatically.
_ Non-Critical - The fault will trip the starter. If automatic fault reset enabled, the fault will be reset (up to 5 per hour).
_ Disabled - The fault is disabled.
_ Warn Relay A - The fault will activate a relay set to WrnA. The fault will not trip the starter.
_ Warn Relay B - The fault will activate a relay set to WrnB. The fault will not trip the starter.
_ Warn Relay C - The fault will activate a relay set to WrnC. The fault will not trip the starter.
5.11 KEYPAD/DISPLAY MODULE
Each starter shall have a door mountable keyboard/display module designed to:
_ Set or examine operating parameters.
_ Provide status information.
_ Provide real time information about line current, voltage, overload, and frequency (via scrolling meter pages).
_ Provide a means to start and stop the solid state starter.
_ Provide full fault annunciation (fault code and description).
The display consists of a backlit liquid crystal display and provides information on two lines of sixteen characters each.

5.12 LED INDICATORS
The following LED indicators are provided for advisory status and fault annunciation.
_ Power On.
_ Microcomputer Fault.
_ SCR Condition.
5.13 DEVICENET COMMUNI CATIONS
The Redistart Micro II starter is provided with DeviceNet communications capability with baud rates of 125, 250, and 500
kps. The module and network status are monitored by way of LEDs on the CPU board. Many of the starters parameters can
be configured over DeviceNet including start / stop control.
6. OPTIONAL FEATURES
6.1 REDISTART MICRO II COMBINATION STARTER
This structure shall consist of a metal enclosed dead front vertical steel assembly. It shall contain:
_ RediStart Micro II solid state starter.
_ A main isolation switch (Fused disconnect, circuit breaker, or molded case switch).
_ Optional control power transformer with fusing.
_ Optional bypass contactor and/or inline contactor.
_ Other optional devices required by the end user.
Fuse clips shall be designed to accept current limiting time delay fuses (HRC1-J ) or customer specified fuses.
6.2 CONTROL POWER TRANSFORMER
The RediStart Micro II can be provided with a control power transformer. The transformer will usually be sized for the power
requirements of the starter but can also be sized to provide power for customer controls.
6.3 BYPASS CONTACTOR
The RediStart Micro II can be provided with a bypass contactor. The bypass contactor will effectively "short" the SCR power
section to connect the incoming line to the motor load without the SCR voltage drop. This will help protect the SCRs against
voltage and current surges and reduce the amount of heat generated by the starter. The bypass option can be a thermal rated
contactor to only be used to bypass the starter or a HP rated contactor that can be used to bypass the soft-starter or across-the-
line start the motor if the soft-starter fails.
6.4 IN-LINE CONTACTOR
The RediStart Micro II can be provided with an in-line contactor. The in-line contactor will provide voltage isolation to the
starter while the starter is in a stopped state. The RediStart Micro II will automatically sequence the energizing of the in-line
contactor.
6.5 RTD MONITORING PACKAGE
The RediStart Micro II can be provided with an optional RTD monitoring package. This package is capable of monitoring up
to 16 - 100 ohm platinum RTDs. Each RTD can be assigned as a bearing, stator or general RTD with separate alarm and trip
setpoint. The RTD module can be remotely mounted at the motor to eliminate the long costly runs of RTD wiring to the
starter enclosure.

6.6 REVERSING (RSM10 or RSM11)
The RediStart Micro II can be provided as a reversing unit. This option provides full solid state reversing by utilizing four
more SCRs in the power section. The logic will fully control the reversing of the unit and has a programmable direction
change coast time, as well as two fully programmable motor ramp profiles for each direction.
6.7 LINEAR ACCELERATION/DECELERATION
The RediStart Micro can be provided with a linear acceleration/deceleration control option. This option uses a tachometer
feedback from the motor shaft. With the feedback, the RediStart Micro will linearly accelerate and decelerate the motor.
6.8 DIFFERENTIAL PROTECTION
The RediStart Micro II can be provided with differential motor protection.
6.9 ADDITIONAL PROGRAMMABLE RELAYS
Every RediStart Micro II can be supplied with an optional 4-relay or 7-relay module. For each module, the relays can each be
programmed to one of the options listed for the programmable relay outputs.
Contact Ratings are 2 Amp Inductive, 5 Amp Resistive, 500VA maximum inrush.
6.10 SERIAL COMMUNICATION PORT
As an option, Benshaw will supply communications via an RS232 or RS485 serial communications port. The RediStart
Micro II will communicate using MODBUS RTU protocol at 2400, 4800 or 9600bps. This can be used for remote start/stop
and/or starter status information. The RediStart Micro II communications option is provided with RediView software.
RediView software is a Windows based program that allows the user to program the RediStart Micro and access operational
data via a PC computer.
6.11 DC INJECTION BRAKING (RSM7 or RSM11)
The RediStart Micro II can be provided with a DC injection brake option. This option provides a user programmable DC
current and brake time adjustments to match the braking torque and time to the application. Two levels of braking are
available 300% DC for 30 seconds or severe duty 600% for 60 seconds.
6.12 SYNCHRONOUS MOTOR CONTROL
The RediStart Micro II can be provided with an optional synchronous DC field controller. This controller is an integrated part
of the RediStart Micro II. The synchronous starter package will fully control and protect the synchronous motor. The
synchronous controller is programmed similar to a standard soft-starter. The synchronous motor controller can also be
provided with dynamic braking control and D.C. inching control.
7. QUALITY INSPECTION
All incoming material will be inspected and/or tested for conformance to quality assurance specifications.
Power semiconductors will be fully tested for proper electrical characteristics (dv/dt, di/dt, etc.).
All subassemblies will be inspected and/or tested for conformance to vendors engineering and quality assurance
specifications.
Printed circuit boards will be burned in for a minimum of 48 hours at 60C.
The completed unit will be functionally tested before shipment to assure proper operation per this specification.

8. START-UP SERVICE
Benshaw provides complete field support for initial startup of the RediStart Micro II starters. In most cases the engineering
staff responsible for in-house testing will also be assigned to follow the unit into the field for startup assistance. Fees for start
up assistance can be obtained from the current Benshaw Solid State Motor Control catalog.
This assistance is available on a daily basis and complete technical support is provided upon request. Additionally, telephone
technical support is available to all customers at no charge.
9. TRAINING
As requested, Benshaw will supply a quotation for on-site or factory training on its RediStart Micro II starters. This training
will provide operating and instruction manuals, training on equipment operation and troubleshooting of the Benshaw
equipment.
10. DOCUMENTATION
Benshaw starters are shipped with a complete set of documentation that typically includes the following items:
_ Complete schematics and wiring diagrams
_ Instruction Manuals
_ Contactor and Disconnect System Data if applicable
If required, special documentation can also be provided. This documentation may include component layout drawings, wiring
diagrams, and system interconnect schematics. All drawings and documentation are done in AutoCAD and Microsoft
Word and are available to customers on 3.5-inch disks or via e-mail.
11. SPARE PARTS
A spare parts list is contained in the instruction manual that is supplied with each starter. A list of Benshaw stocking
distributors can also be provided.
