MASSES WITH CHILDREN….……LITURGIES OF THE WORD WITH CHILDREN

Whether you are a Catechetical Leader, Principal, Catechist, Catholic School Teacher or Youth Minister, you
have probably been called upon to prepare children for a special Mass or lead Children’s Liturgy of the Word.
Here are some resources to assist you according to the spirit and principles of the liturgy. To reserve a resource

Preparing Liturgies with Children:

Directory for Masses with Children is a document from the U.S. Bishops to help children encounter Christ in
the Eucharistic Celebration. It is also printed in resources marked *.

Lectionary for Masses with Children contains the readings for Masses in which a considerable number of
children are present.

*A Guide to the Lectionary/Masses with Children by Peter Mazar & Robert Piercy includes suggestions &
ideas for weekday and Sunday Masses.

Give Thanks & Praise by Patricia Mathson gives suggestions for 36 liturgies based on saints or scriptural
texts.

When Children Gather: 20 Eucharistic Liturgies for the School Year by Robert W. Piercy & Vivian
Williams includes the order of the Mass and helpful ideas.

Weekday Liturgies for Children by Mary Kathleen Glavich, SND includes ideas to enliven Masses the whole
year.

*Preparing Liturgy for Children and Children for Liturgy by Gabe Huck and others gives rules and helpful
ideas for all year in schools and parishes.

Leading Liturgy of the Word with Children:

“Celebrating the Liturgy of the Word with Children” by Cecelia P. Regan from National Pastoral Life
Center is a four-page pamphlet for coordinators & catechists.

The Liturgy of the Word with Children: A Complete Three-Year Program Following the Lectionary by
Katie Thompson gives a model and outline for Masses every Sunday of the three year cycle.

“Children Celebrate” by Pflaum Publishing Group includes leaflets for each Sunday and the Leader’s
Guide.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word by Celebrating the Lectionary is a Catechist’s Manual with background,
directions and activities to use for Children’s Liturgy of the Word each Sunday.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word by Elizabeth Wells and Step-By-Step (ages 3 - 6) and Footprints in Faith
(ages 7 - 12) by 23rd Publications contain activities to reproduce based on the Sunday readings.
