STATEMENT OF MOTIVATION

I am an architect, practicing for last 24 yrs and also educating youngsters to grow up to
be a responsible designers contributing strongly towards society and environment.

All these years I was involved in the development of a various mixed used projects. In
my professional life I learnt how to steer a project by actively coordinating between all
the agencies involved, thereby maintaining an excellent level of communication between
them. My exposure while working on these projects had given me a sensitive eye to
comprehend design problems and constantly hunt for apt design solutions. It is this
intensive work night and day that shaped me as an acknowledged professional.

As an academician and a practicing architect, it is a demand of my profession to keep

myself updated with growing issues like fast and haphazard form of urbanization,
environmental problems like global warming, need to conserve and constantly debating
role of designers to find solutions to above.

The urban population of the world has increased from 739 million to 3.2 billion. By 2025
around 65 per cent of the world’s population is projected to live in cities. By 2010 more
than 75 per cent of the world’s urban population will live in poorer countries (State of
the World 2007). More than 40 per cent of the world children are estimated to be living in
polluted cities of developing world (WHO). A billion more will be added over the next
three decades in Asia – almost adding a whole new India. More than half of them will be
living in cities What about India?

Living in national capital region of my country for last 20 yrs, I have personally
witnessed the deterioration and hap-hazard growth of our cities and multiplying problems
faced by its residents. Further foreign investments have enlarged metropolitan areas. It is
at this point the role of urban designer becomes crucial.

In my professional career, I have been a part of many such discussions related to urban
growth like
* Reimagining Indian cities- design for urban space
*Challenges of urban growth in India .and concluded that design was never the primary
consideration in the way the cities were being planned and urban design is about adding
that one strong direction, where the future of the cities gets charted out. At this juncture I
realized that as an architect I wanted to contribute at a larger scale and work in the
development of city rather then individual projects. As I believe there is no age to
learning, I decided to go back to studies and join this programme.
Somewhere along the way I realized I need to give a more organic and theoretical ground
to the knowledge I have acquired as new urban design measures is a very complexed
phenomenon. It needs to prepare both professionals and academics for critically
analyzing and assessing the growing problem in urban areas internationally
And to increase their capacity to develop appropriate solution in terms of architecturally,
socially, economically and ecologically sustainable environment.

I am aware that my plan is very ambitious and it needs to be carefully prepared. In order
to achieve my goals a more solid academic background is absolutely mandatory and I
need to upgrade my skills and competencies. Taking time off from work is a very
challenging and radical decision. It requires therefore a very strong motivation and a very
careful choice. That’s why I think that the only wining decision is to study in a university
providing the highest possible quality of academic training and with internationally
recognized expertise.

Over a period of time I have acquired a unique school of thoughts which is an impeccable
blend of certain philosophies that I intend to practice, certain qualities I wish to nurture
and certain questions that I want to seek answers to. MASTERS IN INTERNATIONAL
COOPERATION AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT would help me improve my knowledge,
enhance my possibilities to become a specialist in a sector that needs immediate attention,
is also growing and taking more and more place in the international agendas and require
more and more professionals able to cope with the increasing challenges

I think I could also contribute to this programme in many ways. I can bring to the
programme , an overview from my vast experience of 24 years in the working field ,
relating real problems that practitioners in the field of development are asked to tackle in
real life and not only on the paper

In the end I strongly feel that after completing this course, ill be able to nurture the
young and impressionable minds with a more guided approach, add a new direction to
my teaching abilities and contribute towards a research and while working in association
with members of NCRPB (National capital regional planning board) will be able to
contribute towards policy decisions necessary for urban growth in India.

I am convinced that the international exposure and a cross –cultural experience with
essential knowledge being imparted at Darmstadt and other partner universities
would give me an edge over others and expertise to manage my professional life with
both passion and focus in the contemporary globalized scenario . Strong interpersonal
skills and my love for knowing about different cultures and people are my strongest
point. I like to explore places and easily adapt to new and challenging situation.

I’m determined and confident that I make an exceptional candidate for this programme.
