S6 Homework Outline

I. TV/ Radio News


- assessment: content and language [grade (A/ B/ C/ D/ E)]
- Ss to listen to 2 pieces of news from TVB Pearl/ ATV World/ RTHK
Radio 3 (http://www.rthk.org.hk/channel/radio3/) or 4 or other sources
- Ss to include the following information for EACH piece of news:
 news title (from the news report or your own idea)
 date (the date the incident happened or was reported, NOT the
date you heard the news)
 source (if the source is a web site, state the web address)
 a mind map about the news OR detailed information of 3
vocabulary items used in the news report OR the result and 20-
word reflection of each exercise on HKedCity TV News 09/10

II. Journal
- assessment: number of words and language [no. of words + grade (A/
B/ C/ D/ E)]
- Ss to write according to the assigned title or a title of their own choice
- Ss to include the following information for EACH entry:
 title
 date
 an accurate, emotional yet rational account of your life in at least
3 paragraphs
 number of words

III. Sentence Making


- assessment: language [grade (A/ B/ C/ D/ E)]
- Ss to learn 5 collocations of word(s) from the word list studied in that
cycle
- Ss to include the following information for EACH collocation:
 the word and its collocation (e.g. take + to + object)
 1 English meaning from a dictionary (e.g. to go or escape into)
 1 sentence example from a dictionary (e.g. We’ll have to take to
the streets to get our protest noticed.)
 1 sentence using the collocation in Ss’ own words (e.g.

IV. Newspaper Cutting


- assessment: content and language [grade (A/ B/ C/ D/ E)]
- Ss to extract key information from a newspaper report/ article
- Ss to include the following information for EACH entry:
 a copy of the newspaper report/ article stuck with adhesive tape
or glue but NOT staples
 date
 source
 analysis of the newspaper report/ article in ONE of the following
format:
 3 key points, each written in a complete sentence in Ss’
own words
 3 most important people/ parties involved, and why EACH is
so important, in point form or complete sentences
 5 main steps of the incident, in point form or complete
sentences
 a 50-word summary
- marking scheme:
(WL: Word Limit), B: Balance, P: Plagiarism,
R: Readability, L: Language (x2)

V. CEP Section B
- assessment: content and language [score (1-9) for each domain]
- Ss to write 500 words within 75 minutes with limited use of dictionary/
other tools
- peer-marking to be arranged for certain essays because of the
following reasons:
 to encourage Ss to learn from classmates
 to enrich the meaning of writing because of more ‘readers’
 to train Ss’ reading skills
 to let Ss think about how to answer other questions they have
not attempted
 to provide one more chance for Ss to proofread and improve
their own essays
 to motivate Ss to finish essays in time

- for an essay chosen to have peer-marking, mark allocation will be as
follows: 60% - score of Ss’ own essay; 40% - average score of Ss’
peers’ essays
