STONEHENGE

Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument in England located in the county of Wiltshire and is composed of a
circular setting of large standing stones.
Evidences show that Stonehenge was built in five phases from 3100 B.C to 1600 B.C.
The use of the monument is not clear since it was produced by a culture that left no written records. Scientists
say the monument is related to burials (entierros). Stonehenge is also related to Arthurian legend in which stones
are used for healing purposes (propsitos curativos). No one knows why Stonehenge was built on Salisbury Plain or
for what purpose. It may be a temple, a place to watch the movement of the sun and stars, a burial place for
important people, or all three.
The stones have been restored twice during the 20
th
century; once in 1901 and again in 1958. Today, only about
half of the original monument exists. Many of the stones were used to build homes or roads. To stop the damage,
since 1978, Stonehenge can only be viewed from a distance.

Answer the questions:
1. Where is it?
2. What is it?
3. How many phases are there?
4. Which are the possible purposes for it?
5. When were the stones restored?
6. What did people use the stones for?
