Chapter 7 Expanded
One Evil After Another
Prior to the Economic Revolution people looked to God or another form of a deity as the
driving and explaining force in life. When there was something that seemingly could not be
explained simply the phenomenon was attributed to this higher power. This belief, though
effective, evolved like many beliefs often do. Though it would not have done such without the
social stresses of the Economic Revolution. As the Economic Revolution is analyze do not forget
to think critically and ask questions. Examine what issues religions faced with the economic
revolution. Explore the social changes that would be desired by religions. The drastic changes in
social order, and how societys fabric has been altered. The role of money, and the direction that
the human race is headed.
The Economic Revolution refers to the transition from predetermined jobs and set futures
to allowing people to choose their destiny and seek personal gain. Traditions were set in place to
ensure everyone had their future determined before they were even born. This allowed society a
sort of structure to follow. Once this structure began to be questioned the Economic Revolution
was able to take hold and alter the ways of life drastically. The Economic Revolution allowed
more freedom to the individual in regards to life decisions. Having freedom to choose a path
gives one a sense of responsibility for profits and gain earned and won. Suddenly and individual
was responsible for their place in society. The Economic Revolution was about transitioning
from tradition to a focus on profits.
The concept of going from tradition to a more individualized way of life was hard on
many religions. Religious teachings emphasize the importance of structure, and focus on the
family unit and the overall success of the community. Respect for the family and traditions, a
concept that strives to continue with the tried and true methods of doing things. The true teaching
in the majority of religions is to benefit the community at large rather than an individual. With
the Economic Revolution, the focus was to better the individual growth and development. Rather
than entertaining the practice or objective that would benefit a large number of people, the focus
transitioned to a selfish thirst for domination. A neighbor was no longer a fellow worker, now
they were competition, and you wanted to minimize the threat they might propose. The two
concepts, as different as they are, proved to be very difficult to sustain alongside one another.
Communism would benefit or rather, emphasize religions push for doing right by your
neighbor. Also, in perfect communism the goal is to benefit everyone rather than the individual.
Instead of the individual being rewarded for hard work, groundbreaking research, etcetera, the
community would reap the benefits. People would only receive the resources that they needed
and greed wouldnt exist. The investment of the community in theory would propel the very
growth and development of the human race. Now, the question why do we not see this perfect
example in todays society? Simply, and rather bluntly, humans are incapable of denying their
desire for greed. Nature has programmed the homosapien to survive and thrive. In order to
understand what it means to thrive, a human will look at peers and measure themselves to that
standard. If the perception is that of feeling lesser, envy will take over the emotions. Whilst using
emotion to drive the decision making process, the human has set himself up for poor choices

made hastily and usually ending up with negative consequences. As the economic Revolution
grabbed hold of society surely it became a heated topic of discussion. As demonstrated on
numerous occasions, individuals react to circumstances in a much different and in some cases
extreme way.
Surely, when there are multiple ways of reacting, the spectrum may seem difficult to
examine. As a general overview: many people felt very invested in business, while others felt
more invested in their faith, people who pros and cons to both sides, and certainly there were
those that felt indifferent to either concept. Those who felt that business was the center and the
soul of society pushed for their ideas, encouraging others to see their side. Others felt a deep
resentment toward business. They felt it threatened society and tempted the weak. The people
that examined the pros and cons were evenly invested in either side believing that all was the the
work of a deity and that things would work out in the end. Those who felt indifferent realized the
positives and negatives in both ways of thinking and felt as though the world social order would
make the proper changes to ensure a better way of life.
Modern Society has been shaped by the Economic Revolution in many ways, especially
here in the United States. A young child has access to resources that if utilized properly can
allow them to climb the ladder of success. However, with this freedom comes the fact that the
same child has the ability to fail miserably. The measure of success in the United States is now
solely based on material goods and success in regards to revenue, where before it was based on
something much larger than the individual, but on the the community. Once, the focus was
personal growth and development through knowledge and trade, now the focus is on money.
This focus on money has invaded daily lives of families, companies, and entire countries.
One of the most difficult conversations a person may have has to do with money. For religions
this proves to be a difficult topic to handle. Surely, the teachings emphasize selfless acts and non
reliance on material goods. Though, even the church must bring in some revenue to ensure that
mass may continue to run smoothly week after week. Money has invaded lives, bringing some
closer and others farther apart. Making and breaking lives all across the globe. Granted, the
Economic Revolution was not the main cause of this madness, but rather the catalyst. The pain,
anger, and desire for fortune was inevitable based on human nature and the past empires. The
struggle with religion is the next big battle for the human race. Rather than an Economic
Revolution it will be a Social Awareness Revolution.
What is meant by Social Awareness? As modern technology continues to become more
and more vital in the daily lives of the average humans, they are exposed to ideas and concepts
that otherwise they would miss. Just as before where the social order went from community to
states, to nations, and beyond, humans will be subjected to the same eye opening experience.
Rather than a long boat ride, much travel, and planning, it only takes a click of a few buttons to
exchange ideas and concepts between two individuals across the globe. With this convenience it
will prove to alter the lives of everyone just as the Economic Revolution. Suddenly the focus will
change, but rather than starting in a small place and gradually spreading, it has the potential to
take off like wild fire. Rallying support for a cause has never been this simple.
