Checklist for Act of Piracy
(Effective Date: 10/01/2001)

Immediate Action
Call the Master. Officer on duty.
Sound the emergency alarm. Officer on duty.
Switch on the deck lights and accommodation external
lights at night.
Officer on duty.
Information & Records
Set up portable radio communication means between
officers on deck and the Master.
Master.
Inform Company. Master.
Keep the radio station stand-by - with current and
updated position available.
Officer on duty.
Establish VHF communication with the signal stations,
coast radio stations and other vessels in surrounding
waters.
Officer on duty.
Request assistance from local Port Authorities, Police,
Coast Guard and the Navy.
Officer on duty.
Assessment
Ensure all personnel are safe and caution everyone not
to be adventurous.
Master.
Try and assess the nature and extent of threat and
intentions of the Pirates.
Master.
Corrective Action
Keep the crew gathered together and stand-by. Chief officer, Chief engineer.
Prepare to defend the vessel by barricading all access
routes to the vessel.
Chief officer.
If possible, speed up and carry out evasive maneuvers. Master.
Make fire hoses ready with water on deck in order to
prevent pirates from boarding.
Chief officer.
Fire a parachute light in the direction of the attacking
craft.
Officer on duty.
Use the searchlights to illuminate and possibly blind
the attacking craft.
Officer on duty.
Avoid violence. All officers and crew.
Try to ward off pirates, or delay entry by fire hosing,
barricading or similar actions.
Chief officer.
Barricade the whole crew on the Bridge and/or in the
Engine Room.
Master / Chief officer / Chief

Try to bring portable VHF radios. Officer on duty.
Establish communication between the Bridge and the
Engine Room.

Remain barricaded until the danger is over. Master.
Keep Company informed about the attack continuously
if possible.
