Welcome,
George
Alexander
Louis
BRITAINS new prince has
been named George Alexander Louis.
Speculation over what moniker
Prince William and his wife, Kate,
would pick for their first child
ended just two days after the babys
birth.
Kensington Palace said the royals were
delighted to announce their sons name,
adding that the Two-day-old baby and
third-in-line to the throne will be known
as His Royal Highness Prince George of
Cambridge.
Noble names are steeped in history,
which explains why thousands of bets
rolled in to British bookmakers for the
name George, the name of six previous
British kings. The moniker evokes the
steadfastness of the queens father, George
VI, who rallied the nation during World
War II.
Meaning farmer or earth worker,
George was the 12th most popular name
for boys born in England and Wales in
2011. St George, a fourth-century Christian martyr, is the patron saint of England.

William And Kate Thank

Hospital For Baby Care
PRINCE WILLIAM, Kate
and their baby boy, spent their
first full day as a family on
July 23, inside St Marys Hospital, thanking staff for their
care but making well-wishers
wait for a first glimpse of the
royal heir.

As celebratory lights, gun salutes and

other tributes were unleashed in Britain
and abroad, William thanked staff at the
hospital for the tremendous care the three
of us have received.
We know it has been a very busy
period for the hospital and we would like

Prince Harry Will

Be Fun Uncle
PRINCE HARRY has laid out his
mission as an uncle: protect the newest member of his family, and make
sure Britains little prince has fun.
Harry told reporters at a charity
event in London last month that
when he met Prince George, the new
baby was crying his eyes out, as all
babies do.
He says he wants to make sure
the future heir to the throne has a
good upbringing, and keep him out
of harms way and to make sure he
has fun.
The rest, he said, hell leave to the
babys parents, Prince William and
the former Kate Middleton.
Thats not to say he wont help
out: Harry adds that he hopes his
brother knows how expensive his
baby-sitting services are.

to thank everyone staff, patients and

visitors for their understanding during
this time, he said in a statement.
When Kate gave birth at 4:24pm on the
Monday, it triggered an impromptu party
outside Buckingham Palace and in front of
the hospitals private Lindo Wing.
Kates parents, Michael and Carole
Middleton, were the first to pay a visit
to the new family, beaming at journalists
as they posed for photographs outside
the hospital and pausing to answer a few
questions.
Hes absolutely beautiful. Theyre both
doing really well, were so thrilled, Carole
Middleton said of the baby and Kate.
REMAINED
William, Kate and the infant remained
in the hospital until the Tuesday evening.
Tourists and well-wishers flocked to
Buckingham Palace on Tuesday, lining
up outside the gates to take pictures of the
golden easel on which, in keeping with
royal tradition, the birth announcement
was displayed.
This was a great event yet again
our royal family is bringing everyone together, said 27-year-old David Wills, who
took a two-mile detour on his run to work
to pass the palace. I kind of feel as though
I am seeing part of history here today.
A band of scarlet-clad guardsman at the
palace delighted onlookers with a rendition
of the song Congratulations.
Other celebrations Tuesday included
gun salutes to honor the birth by royal
artillery companies in Green Park, near
the palace, and the Tower of London,

Halfway around the
world, royalist group Monarchy New Zealand said
it had organized a national light show,
with 40 buildings across the islands lit up
in blue to commemorate the royal birth,
including Sky Tower in Auckland, the airport in Christchurch, and Larnach Castle in
the South Island city of Dunedin. A similar
lighting ceremony took place in Canada;
Peace Tower and Parliament buildings in
the capital, Ottawa, were bathed in blue
light, as was CN Tower in Toronto.

Prince William To
Get Two Weeks Of
Paternity Leave
By Jill Lawless
HE MAY be royal, but when it comes to
paternity leave Prince William is in the
same boat as everyone else. Like thousands
of other new fathers in Britain, he will get
two weeks now is son is born.
Along with British society, the royal
family has been gradually modernizing
its attitudes to birth and parenting. Williams father, Prince Charles, was present
at the birth of his two sons, who were born
in a hospital rather than a palace both
breaks from royal tradition. But William
is the first senior royal to receive statutory
paternity leave, which was introduced in
Britain in 2003.
Some family campaigners say William,

RRWild Fires And Sunburn:

UK Bakes In Hot Weather
FOR MOST of last month, Britons have
enjoyed something they hadnt seen in
years: A real summer.
After suffering through one of the
wettest years on record in 2012, Britain
has spent several days last month baking
in temperatures that hit 90 degrees on
June 19.
Although mild by international standards the US capital was sweating
through temperatures in the mid-90s the
unbroken spell of warm weather and blue
skies has delighted many Brits depressed
by last years soggy, overcast summer.
But the heat also caused problems:
Wales, Scotland, and even London were
hit by wild fires, one English council
reported melting roads, and there has
been a surge of hospital admissions as
pale-skinned Brits get sunburned.

RRQueen, Parliament
Approve Gay Marriage Law
LAWMAKERS have passed a bill legalizing same-sex marriage in England
and Wales, with the first gay weddings
expected to take place by next summer.
In what was largely seen as a formality, members of the House of Commons
last month approved minor amendments
made to the legislation, which had cleared
the House of Lords a day earlier.
Shortly after the decision the Queen

gave her royal stamp of approval, clearing

the way for the first same-sex weddings
next summer.
Lawmakers cheered as House of Commons Speaker John Bercow said royal
assent had been given one day after
the bill to legalize same-sex marriage in
England and Wales cleared Parliament.
The queens approval was a formality
and is the last step necessary for a bill to
become law.
The law enables gay couples to get
married in both civil and religious ceremonies in England and Wales, although
the Church of England is barred from conducting same-sex unions. It also will allow
couples who had previously entered into
civil partnerships which carry similar
rights and responsibilities to marriage
to convert their relationships to marriage.

RRSaatchi Says He Is
Divorcing Nigella Lawson
PROMINENT art collector Charles Saatchi says he is divorcing his celebrity chef
wife Nigella Lawson because she did not
publicly defend his reputation after images emerged of him grasping the throat
of his wife in a posh London restaurant.
Tabloid newspapers in June published
photos of the incident, which Saatchi
described as a playful tiff.
The 70-year-old Saatchi was given a
police caution after admitting assault.
He told the Mail on Sunday newspaper
that he is divorcing Lawson because he
has clearly been a disappointment to
her and because he is disappointed she did
not defend him after the incident.
Lawsons spokesman declined to
comment.

Third Place For Brits In World

Wife Carrying Championships

BIZARRE as the sport may be, the Wife Carrying World Championships saw Brits win
two medals last month.
Couples race around a 253-metre obstacle course with the wife carried upside
down with her legs clasped around the
runners neck which certainly brings a
togetherness in sport.
Matt Witko and Hattie Archer came third
in the event which is staged as part of the
Sonkajarvi Festival in Helsinki, Finland.
Captain Witko said: I managed to come
third, which was remarkable really I was
behind two former world champions.
Captain Witko, a soldier from Wiltshire,
was representing Great Britain after taking the
UK title with a wife borrowed from a good
friend. After his wife was forced to drop out,
he said he was inundated with offers from
women willing to be carried.
His new partner was aerobics instructor
Hattie Archer who added: The water obstacles were ridiculously hard there was
a big pond and it was lined with plastic so it
was quite slippy.
They were pipped at the post by Finnish
couple Taisto Miettinen and Kristiina, who
won gold for the fifth consecutive year.
Thousands of people flock each year to
watch the race which was inspired by a 19th
century Finnish legend about wives being
stolen from neighbouring villages.

Black Caf Owner Warns

Customers Of The Dangers

THE RACISM faced by a caf owner in West

Yorkshire has driven her to post a notice
warning customers that the owner is black.
Martha-Renee Kolleh, owner of the
Yeanon Cafe in Ossett, says she is fed up
with people walking out when they see the
colour of her skin.
So she had posted a sign on the door:
Attention! Everyone be aware I am a black
woman, and always will be. If you are allergic to black people please dont come in.
But if you prefer quality wholesome meals

No More High-Fives For Kids

From Lollipop Man

HIGH-FIVING children became a taboo for a

local lollipop man last month
Roger Green was advised that a driver had
complained that he was slowing down traffic,
reported the Mirror.
I put a sign up saying I could no longer
high-five children, the 64-year-old warden
said. The parents complained as they cant
understand why the ban is in place. It is
harmless fun.
Parents at Sandy Lane Primary School in
Bracknell, Berkshire, say the high-fives make
their childrens day.
Mother-of-four Leith Kilmartin, 33, added:
It is ridiculous. We may start a petition.
A spokeswoman for Bracknell Forest
Council said: Everyone appreciates Roger
Greens friendliness and good humour. They
added: Children stopping as they cross the
road for a high-five puts them and the crossing patrol man at risk and confuses drivers.
Green was told later that he can exchange thumbs up with the children as a
compromise.

Lots Of McDiving In Students

Latest Craze In Britain

McDONALDS fast foods has found itself at

the center of a new student fad in the UK
McDiving. Simply put, young men and
women, sometimes drunk, diving over the
counters of the food chain nationwide.
Its not unusual to see a horde of boozy
revellers pile into a McDonalds after a
night out on the town, but students have
been posting online videos of themselves
performing the bizarre stunt, which involves
taking a short run-up and launching across
the counter.
One clip shows a man McDiving while
kitted out as a banana, before hes dragged
away by a bouncer, reported the Daily Mail.
The bizarre craze even has its own
Facebook page, which reads: McDiving is
the new sport of today. Its very simple: You
visit a McDonalds and dive over the counter.
Beware you must be prepared for the
wrath of the bouncers.
McDonalds said in a statement: We do
not condone jumping over our restaurant
front counters as it poses a serious health
and safety risk to both the participants and
our restaurant staff.

Nigerian Teams Suspended

Due To Unusual Scores
79-0 and 67-0

WITH LARGE wins needed for two amateur

Nigerian teams that would have seen one of
them promoted into the professional league,
two scores stood out last month.
Plateau United Feeders and Police Machines victories were certainly eye-catching
at 79-0 and 67-0.
The results have sparked outrage, an
indefinite suspension of the four clubs
involved in the games, and an investigation
into match-fixing by the Nigeria Football
Federation.
The NFF described the scores from last
months tournament in the northeastern
city of Bauchi as a mind-boggling show
of shame.
Chasing a place in Nationwide League
Division 3, Nigerias lowest professional
league, Plateau United Feeders reportedly
scored 72 of their goals against Akurba FC
in the second half a rate of more than a
goal a minute. In fact, a goal about every 40
seconds. Non-stop for 45 minutes.
At the same time, Police Machine reportedly scored 61 times against Babayaro FC
in the second half.
Unfortunately for both teams, instead of
promotion they were placed on immediate
suspension before the match-fixing investigation was announced.

Horsey Business Gets Woman

In McDonalds Trouble

UNUSUAL AS it seemed, a woman took

her horse into a McDonalds restaurant
last month.
Initially the woman rode up to the drivethrough window only to be turned away. Not
to be put off she then led the animal inside
the building in Greater Manchester, where the
horse made a deposit on the floor.
McDonalds have said that they are unable
to serve customers on horseback.
The company told the BBC: On 20 July

No Nanny For George

NOW THAT the Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William have their
long-awaited baby, the results of a public poll support the couples plan to
bring up their baby without a nanny and to give the Middletons a greater
role in their grandchilds formative years.
The baby will have the official title His Royal Highness the Prince of Cambridge.
The title comes as a result of Prince William being made a duke in 2011 by the Queen
as a wedding present. It emerged the Queen issued a Letters Patent under the Great Seal
of the Realm when the Duchess of Cambridge was three months pregnant, declaring all
the children of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales should have the title royal highness.
Without the order, a daughter born to the
royal couple would not have been HRH or a
princess, despite being a future queen.
If Kate is well enough to go back to work
in the autumn, it will bring her in line with the
Queens maternity leave: she made her first
public engagement three and a half months
after giving birth to Prince Charles in 1948.

environment by cutting vehicle emissions.

You Dont Have To Get Drunk To

Have A Good Night Out

An alcohol-free bar is to open in the capital

in an effort to persuade Londoners that they
do not need to drink in order to have fun.
Instead of beer, wine or spirits, Redemption will serve mocktails and drinks such as
hibiscus iced tea, alongside a healthy food

The drinks list will also feature detox teas,
cocotinis a martini-style drink made from

The first branch launched as a weekly

on July 21, before moving to the Trellick

Founder and owner Catherine Salway
said she came up with the idea for Redemption after realising there was a shortage of
alcohol-free options in London. She said the
aim was to offer people a fun place to go

Balham Really Is Now Gateway

To The South

The suburb once dubbed the ugliest and

most abominable in London has blossomed
into its most sought after yuppie village, it has
been claimed.
More buyers are looking to find homes
in Balham famously lampooned by Peter
Sellers as Gateway to the South than any

other part of London, according to research

by estate agents.
They found there were 46 registered buyers to every property in the SW4 postcode,
compared with a London-wide average of 19
to one and a national figure of eight to one.
Agents said Balhams reputation as a poor
mans Clapham meant prices can be up to
a third lower than its neighbour, making it
attractive to young househunters.
A flurry of bar and restaurant openings
has allowed it to throw off its dull suburbia
image. It also hosts a thriving annual comedy
festival.
Paul Smith, Chief Executive of estate
agency haart, which carried out the research,
said: Balham may have been derided by
Peter Sellers but is now being mooted as
a kind of new Notting Hill. Residents were
inclined to call it South Clapham, but now
Balham speaks up for itself.

The Sun newspaper temporarily changed
its name to The Son in honor of the tiny
monarch-in-waiting.
Beyond the newsstands, the birth of
the royal baby was welcome news in a
country where polls show the monarchy is
as popular as any time in recent history. In

the Yorkshire village of Bugthorpe which

Prince Charles was visiting as part of a tour
through northern England the baby was
on everyones lips.
Morning Granddad, said local resident Robert Barrett, which drew a chuckle
from the prince.
INTEREST
Back in London, there was a healthy
interest in the babys future.
I hope the child is given the opportunity to have a normal childhood, said
Julie Warren, a 70-year-old retired schoolteacher waiting for her grandson outside
one of the capitals subway stations.
The birth caps a resurgence in popularity for Britains monarchy, whose members have evolved, over several decades
of social and technological change, from
distant figures to characters in a well-loved
national soap opera.
The institution reached a popular nadir
after the death of Princess Diana in a car
crash in 1997. Diana had been popular,
glamorous and in the eyes of many
badly treated by the royal Firm.
But the dignified endurance of Queen

in a country where until recently new

fathers have taken little time off.
SOCIAL
But others say two weeks is not
enough, and argue social and economic
pressures still discourage fathers from
spending time looking after their
newborns.
There is an element that employers
and men themselves are thinking of
them as the ones who earn the money
and stick in that role when children
come along, said Jeremy Davies of the
Fatherhood Institute think tank. It can
be quite difficult to set yourself apart
from that.
Under British law, William is entitled to two weeks off at a flat pay rate
of just under 137 a week. Hes lucky
the military is among employers that
pay more, and he will receive his full
salary for the fortnight.
The rules are changing. Under recent
changes, new fathers can take up to
six months leave by using up some of
the year of a partner who has returned
to work.
But few do. Elizabeth Gardiner of
campaign group Working Families
said that in the first year the flexible
leave was offered, only 1,650 men in
Britain took it.
She said the solution is to set aside
some timAt the other end of the scale
is the United States, where there is no
government-subsidized nationwide
paid paternity leave, though some
companies and a few states including
California offer it. Many companies
and the public sector offer unpaid leave
to new fathers.
Britain is moving to offer fathers
more time. Under legislation currently
before Parliament, from 2015 parents
will be able to split the 50 weeks of
paid leave as they like.

odds on different names for the royal baby as they perform a stunt
outside St Marys Hospital Lindo Wing in London.

Welcome, George Alexander Louis

Continued from page 1
The name Louis could be a tribute to
Lord Louis Mountbatten, the Duke of Edinburghs uncle and the last British Viceroy of India before independence in 1947.
Williams father, Prince Charles, was close
with Mountbatten, who was assassinated
by the Irish Republican Army in 1979.
The announcement from Prince William
and Kate just two days after the babys
birth was quick, by royal standards.
Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of
Edinburgh took a month before settling
on the name Charles for the Prince of
Wales. Princess Diana and Prince Charles
took a week before settling on Williams
four names.
For now, the littlest royal is expected
to stay out of the spotlight after making
his first public appearance in the arms
of his parents outside of Londons St
Marys Hospital.
After leaving the hospital, William and
Kate introduced their son July 24 to greatgrandmother Queen Elizabeth II, who was
keen to see the baby before she starts her
annual summer vacation in Scotland later
this week.
Then the young family headed to see
Kates parents in their village near London.

Now that Kate and William have chosen

a name, they are expected to soon choose
a photographer for the babys first official
portrait.

UK Outlines Changes To
Boost Army Reserves
By Cassandra Vinograd
ARMY RESERVISTS will get military
pensions and other benefits as part of a
government bid to boost reserve numbers,
the UK defense secretary said last month.
The proposals unveiled by Philip Hammond which include rebranding the
Territorial Army as the Army Reserve
come as Britain cuts its regular army from
100,000 to just over 80,000 soldiers and
increases its fully-trained army reservists
to 30,000 from around 19,000 by 2018.
Hammond told lawmakers last month
that the government will invest about
1.8bn during the next 10 years in the
reserves.
The job we are asking our reservists
to do is changing, he said, calling such
moves key to ensuring Britains future
military capabilities, and noting that organization and training must evolve as well.
Some lawmakers questioned whether
the plans were realistic. Conservative
Party lawmaker Bob Stewart said he was
slightly pessimistic about the reserves
increasing since recruitment has not been
great over the last year.
ACKNOWLEDGED
Hammond acknowledged that the plans
were not without risk, but said the government did not have the luxury to maintain
current numbers.
We have no plan B, he said. We will
deliver these reserve numbers.
Hammond announced further training
and plans to bring forward some 40m
of investment in new equipment for
reservists.
New incentives will be offered to
small- and medium-sized businesses to
support their reservist employees, along
with upgraded vacation and pension entitlements to improve overall reservists
compensation.
Starting in 2015, reservists will be able
to accrue armed forces pensions while they
are training in addition to when theyre
deployed and the government also will
offer a signing bonus as part of efforts
to encourage and speed up transitions by

regular serving soldiers into the reserves.

ILLEGAL
More notice also will be given for deployments to make it easier for companies
to plan around them though the government stopped short of making it illegal
to discriminate against part-time soldiers
when hiring.
Chief of the General Staff Gen Sir Peter
Wall called the proposals a welcome and
timely announcement for the army.
The Territorial Army, as it has been
called up till now... is ready for change,
Wall said.
Shadow defense secretary Jim Murphy
said the opposition Labour Party backed
many of the reforms, citing reservists
enormous contribution at home and
overseas.
However, there are concerns that rather
than synchronize the role of the Army with
that of the reserves, todays announcement
appears belated, and there will be concern
the reserves uplift is not designed to
complement our Army but to supplement
lost capacity, he said.

Police Sorry For Using

Dead Childrens Names
BRITAINS top policeman has apologized for using the names of dead children to help establish false identities for
undercover work.
A report published last month revealed that the names of 42 dead children born between 1940 and 1975
had been used by police.
Metropolitan Police chief Bernard
Hogan-Howe says he is sorry for the
shock and offense the tactic caused.
The report indicates that security
services may also have used names of
the dead.
The report says that families have
not been told because that would put
undercover agents at risk.
Howe indicated at least one family
had discovered their childs name had
been used.

Same-Sex Couples Receive

US Immigration Benefits
With DOMAs Demise
SAME-SEX couples will (finally) be able to
obtain substantially more US immigration
benefits for their foreign born spouses. On
June 26, 2013, the Supreme Court of the
United States effectively found the Defense
of Marriage Act (DOMA) unconstitutional.
Enacted in 1996, DOMA defines marriage
as a legal union between one man and one
woman. This federal statute prohibited numerous federal benefits from being conferred
between same-sex couples, including US
immigration privileges.
US immigration law permits foreign national spouses of US citizens, lawful permanent
residents, and non-immigrant visa holders to
obtain dependent non-immigrant status or a
green card. Under DOMA, US immigration
law did not afford these benefits to samesex couples because their State-authorized
or foreign marriages were not recognized
under US federal law. This all changed with
the recent Supreme Court decision.
US Department of Homeland Security
Secretary Janet Napolitano stated we will
implement todays decision so that all
married couples will be treated equally and

King Richard III To Get $1.5m Burial

to get a tomb fit for a king.
British officials say they will spend 1m

skeleton was found earlier this year beneath a parking lot in the central England
city of Leicester.
Officials at Leicester Cathedral said
last month that Richard will be buried
with honor beneath a raised tomb within
a specially created area in the cathedral.

laws. It has been announced that USCIS will
be accepting same sex petitions and related
applications at this time. To obtain these US
immigration benefits, a couple will need to be
legally married in a US State or foreign country which allows same-sex marriage for US.
So what types of benefits will same-sex
couples soon likely be able to obtain for their
spouses?
Green cards With US immigration law
recognizing marriages between same-sex
couples, US citizens and green card holders
will be able to file green card applications
for their foreign national spouses. This
privilege has long been afforded to opposite
sex couples to ensure the unification of
bi-national families, and it will finally allow
same-sex couples to make the US their home
through a family-based green card petition. In
fact, some same-sex couples have already
reported approvals of their green card petitions for their spouses.
Fianc visas Whether same-sex couples
will be able to apply for fianc visas is still a
bit tricky, and future policy memoranda will

determine if and how such visa applications

will be processed. Opposite sex couples can
currently apply for fianc visas for their foreign
national significant other. Once the fianc is
admitted to the US on a K visa, they are supposed to get married within 90 days. Because
only certain US States currently allow samesex marriages, consular officers may require
additional documentation to demonstrate the
couple can or will get married in a state that
recognizes same-sex marriages.
Dependent Non-Immigrant Visas. Under
current law, same-sex couples are only able
to obtain a cohabitating partner visitor visa
to accompany their spouse or partner to the
US. Opposite sex spouses of non-immigrant
visa holders, such as H-1B, L-1, or E-2 visa
holders, are able to obtain dependent visas
authorizing them to live (and for certain visa
categories work) for extended periods of
time. These same dependent non-immigrant
visas should also be available to same-sex
married couples in the near future.
Immigration reform is one of the hottest
topics in America. The Senate recently
passed the comprehensive immigration
reform bill SB 744 the Border Security,
Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013. As the bill moves
to the House of Representatives for further
legislative procedures and voting, foreign
nationals, intending immigrants, and US
corporations who hire foreign national labor
are intently awaiting the outcome. One thing
is for sure, the Supreme Courts decision to
repeal DOMA is a major victory in the equal
treatment of same-sex couples.
* USCIS just came out with a policy memo
that they are accepting same cases now!

A 50-Year Cycle Brings

Me Back To Shropshire
AT THIS time of year in 1963, I was moving
out of London to take my new bride to north
Shropshire. We married in Yorkshire, honeymooned in Dorset and took the train with our
two suitcases up to Whitchurch.
Now, after a career in the south of England
we have decided to return to Shropshire
on the 50th anniversary of that first move.
How things have
changed. This time
we shall go by car
and will be accompanied by two full
furniture vans. But
this time well be
going to Ludlow in
the south.
We first saw the
house we wanted
at the beginning of
May. I knew I wanted to live there instantly
and when we went round the house we immediately fell for it. We made an offer there
and then, to be told that we couldnt seriously
be considered since our house was not even
on the market. The one in Ludlow had been
waiting for a buyer for the best part of a year
so clearly the owner would not be interested
in an offer from people who might spend
another year selling their own house.
ARGUED
I argued that in Salisbury housing was
a sellers market. To no avail. So we went
home, put the house on the market and within
three days entertained a dozen visitors, one of
whom more or less bought it on the spot. It
sold so quickly that there wasnt even time to
get a For Sale notice in the front garden. Nor
was there time to knock up a sales brochure.
You might think that the asking price was
too low but in fact we made a massive profit
this house has been earning more money
than I had over the years we have lived here!
Just standing there being a house. Crazy.
Mind you, selling up and moving is
not cheap. The estate agent worked hard
of course, getting his prospective buyers
through our doors and settling on a price that

suited everyone. For that they will garner over

five thousand pounds.
A similar sum is likely to accrue to the
solicitors entrusted with ensuring that all is
above board with the sale. And of course
there is the removal company whose cost
to us will run into several thousand pounds
for packing and carrying two van-loads of
furniture the 100-odd miles between Salisbury and Ludlow.
GOVERNMENT
The government will also get its cut charging us three percent of the purchase price in
Stamp Duty. Admittedly, you only pay one
percent up to a quarter of a million pounds.
A quarter of a million pounds. The sheer size
is simply frightening. How anyone can afford
the mortgage on such a sum?
The road to a new dwelling is fraught with
difficulty. Late one Wednesday night the son
of the woman whose house we are buying
rang to say that the phone company BT
had cut off his aged mother. She lives alone
far from family and refuses to use a mobile
phone. The person responsible for this could
only be me.
I found this hard to understand since my
new company is Sky and they had been
informed by me on several occasions that
we would not be in the house till mid-August.
They, in their wisdom, decided that June 19
would be a good cut-off date. And so they
slammed the phone. That is the technical
term for it which accurately describes the
sophistication of the exercise. They simply
connected up to our future house.
WITHDREW
BT for their part simply withdrew without
a fight, despite the fact that they had a loyal
customer there paying all the bills. I rang Sky
who took the best part of an hour to understand what they had done and then declared
that they could not reverse the process. That
had to be done by BT.
No, I couldnt do it since the telephone
account our lady had was with BT. She
would have to do it. Simple matter: she just
had to ring up BT and tell them to reverse the

slamming. There was a hole in that reasoning

which took another hour to explain.
After four days the line was restored, at
first with a temporary number, then after a
further week the original number was granted
back to the lady. There is a lesson there
as my estate agent was quick to tell me. If
things go wrong, BT are generally never far
from the scene. BT used to be the British
communications industry. Now after years
of privatisation, they are just one company
among many.
A few years back, I used to have my
telephone service provided by them. One
day I woke up to discover that my line had
been taken over by TalkTalk whoever they
are. They allow me to use the same number
I always had and send me monthly incomprehensible bills. Although I have foolishly
approached Sky to provide television, broadband and telephone services, I am entirely
unsure as to whether TalkTalk will actually
be running the telephone. Or who will be.
PRIVATISED
The latest Government pronouncement
has ordained that the Royal Mail will be
privatised. What a bloody stupid idea! It probably makes sound business to make a profit
out of delivering the post, just as it probably
makes good sense to make money out of
providing good health, better education and
prison facilities.
The real trouble is that you end up by not
knowing who is doing what and more particularly why. I mean, you assume companies
are run in the best interests of their customers
but ultimately the real aim is to make money.
In years to come you will never know who is
delivering your mail. Or which is the cheapest
service. Currently it costs 60p to send a letter
first class post. Sixty pence can you believe
it? Twelve shillings.
Anyway, since we are moving up to Salop,
it will provide an excellent opportunity to explore a different region of the UK and cater for
all those ex-pats from the West Midlands who
think their part of England has ceased to exist.

Brit Fugitive Arrested Hiding In Panic Room

Police Say Missing

Madeleine McCann
May Be Alive
BRITISH police say they have launched
a full investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, and want
to trace 38 persons of interest in
the case.
Detectives say its possible that Madeleine, who vanished from a Portuguese
holiday resort six years ago, is still alive.
Scotland Yard said June 9 that 12 of
the individuals of interest are British,
and the rest from a variety of European
countries. The force says it is working
with governments across the continent
to find out more.
McCann vanished from a vacation
home in Portugals Algarve region on
May 3, 2007, days before her fourth
birthday. The case has generated intense media interest.
Detective Chief Inspector Andy
Redwood said police continue to
believe that there is a possibility that
Madeleine is alive.

SPANISH police say they have

arrested one of Britains mostwanted fugitives while he was
hiding in the panic room of a
villa in southern Spain.
A police statement last
month said Mark Allan Lilley was arrested in a house
in Alhaurin de la Torre after
they found a false panel in a
wardrobe that led to the panic
room from where he could

monitor security cameras.

He gave himself up without
a fight.
Police said Lilley was sentenced in 2000 to 24 years for
drug trafficking although he
had fled while on bail.
The statement said he had
changed his appearance and
was living under a false identity, and had become a martial
arts expert.

Military Waives Fitness Test For Cybersoldiers

FLABBY keyboard jockeys,
stringy coders, and out-ofshape hackers: The British
military wants you.
British Defense Minister Philip Hammond told
lawmakers last month that
military physical aptitude
tests wont apply to computer experts working as
reservists.
He says the military will
specifically be recruiting

cyberreservists, who will

not necessarily have to have
the same levels of fitness or
deployability as reservists in
general.
Britain, like other countries, is boosting its electronic
capabilities as attention increasingly turns to the twin
threats of cyberespionage
and cybersabotage.
The UK is already active
in the world of hacking.

THE ROYAL MAIL can trace its

history back 500 years to the time
of Henry VIII and its bright red
pillarboxes grace streets across
the UK from the Scilly Isles to
Scotland.
But change is coming as the British icon
seeks to adapt to the decline in traditional
snail mail and compete with the likes of
Federal Express and UPS.
The UKs coalition government laid out
plans July 10 to privatize the Royal Mail.
Analysts have speculated that the company
could be worth 3bn. The government
plans to sell a majority stake but it has yet
to decide on the exact amount itll leave
that to market conditions.
This is logical, Business Secretary
Vince Cable told the House of Commons.
It is a commercial decision designed to
put Royal Mails future onto a long-term,
sustainable basis.
Tens of thousands of Royal Mail workers will be able to buy shares in the company and the government plans to retain a
stake, opening the possibility it will sell
more shares in the future.
Although the red pillarboxes are protected by law, there are concerns that
other parts of the Royal Mail such as a
six-days-a-week delivery service may be
under threat once it has to make its way
profitably in the private sector.
OPPOSES
The Communications Workers Union,
which represents Royal Mail workers, opposes the sale because of fears of potential
job losses. There are also concerns that
investors may be reluctant to buy knowing that the new company would operate
under a constant threat of industrial action.
Cable tried to assuage fears last month,
claiming that privatized delivery services
in Austria, Germany and Belgium all produce profit margins far higher than the
Royal Mail but have continued to provide
high-quality and expanding services.

Nonetheless, there are also worries the

Royal Mails quest for profit may mean
remote and therefore higher-cost communities in the UK will not get the same
service as cities and towns.
The principle that has secured the universal service is one where the high density
areas, like the big cities, subsidize the rural
areas, said Dave Ward, the CWUs deputy
general secretary. The countryside will be
completely cut off.
DETERMINED
But Britains government is determined
to move forward, describing the privatization as critical to the future of Royal Mail,
which has seen its revenues shift more
toward packages and away from the mail
of the past.
The Royal Mail needs to invest in new
technology to survive. Operating profit,
excluding modernization costs, rose to
211m last year. Parcels accounted for almost half of the groups 9.5bn of revenue
in the last year.
In the UK, the cash-strapped government desperately needs the Royal Mail
privatization to work as the country
struggles to recover from the economic
crisis. In a country that has imposed tough
spending controls and austerity measures
on all government departments, investing
in the future means getting at the end of a
very long line.
But tampering with a service so central
to public life is also a delicate matter.
Even the late Margaret Thatcher, who
championed the sale of state-owned companies such as British Telecom and British
Gas, backed away from privatizing Royal
Mail during her tenure as prime minister
back in the 1980s.

KEEPING UP WITH BRITAINS

FAVOURITE SOAP OPERAS

CORONATION STREET went a bit biblical

over a baby this month. In the hospital ward,
its like King Solomon was there himself,
ready to divide baby Jake (as Izzy and Gary
had named him) or Joe (as Tina had named
him), in half. Strong feelings on both sides
are expressed as to who is the rightful mum
when surrogate Tina refuses to hand the baby
over to Izzy and Gary. Garys mum Anna slaps
Tina across the chops saying: Hes not your
baby, he never was your baby and he never
will be your baby!. And if Tinas left in any
doubt that shes doing the wrong thing by
wanting to keep the baby, even boyfriend
Tommy, not usually known as a thinker, tells
her shes stolen the baby and has to hand it
back. Meanwhile, Izzy calls a halt to the fight
over the baby, she loves him too much for
it to continue and tells Tina shes won, she
can have baby Jake. And its then that Tina
decides to back down and hand over the baby
to Izzy as the rightful mum.
Talking about mums, David tells Gail
shes the worst mother in the world, this
month. And indeed, she has been pretty bad.
Davids little, if rather evil, heart is broken
when he overhears Kylie and Gail talking in
the house when they think hes out, revealing that Davids big brother Nick could be
the dad of Kylies baby. David plans suicide
and teeters on a cliff top before coming back
from the brink to decide on revenge instead.
He smashes up Nick and Leannes flat with
a sledgehammer and determines to split
them both up by poisoning Nicks mind that
Leanne still loves Peter. His evil little plan has
already taken root.
Over at Roys Rolls, theres strange go-

ings on when things move about in the night

downstairs in the caf. Roys convinced
theres an intruder and stays up all night
with a flask and a torch determined to catch
the nocturnal nuisance. When that doesnt
work, he sets up CCTV to catch on camera
whoever is breaking in and tidying up. No one
has been, of course, its Roy and his restless
mind who has been moving things around
after hours. The CCTV clearly captures Roy
piling all the chairs up on a table in the cafe,
then leaving through the front door and
wandering out in his pyjamas. He sleepwalks
to the Red Rec and Deirdre finds him in his
dressing gown as shes taking Eccles for
a walk. She gets him back home safe and
sound, in body if not in mind.
Norris shows his true and very nasty
colours this month when Emily slips and
falls and is laid up at home on the sofa.
Flowers and chocolates arrive from Emilys
niece Freda and nephew Spider and Norris is
put out when he sees how happy Emily is to
receive gifts from those he says are vultures
circling and waiting to inherit from Emilys
will. A box set of film noir DVDs arrive from
Freda and Norris intercepts the parcel, rips
off the wrapping and gives the present to
Emily himself saying its from him. Emilys
overjoyed until she finds the get well card
from Freda that went with the DVDs and shes
not best pleased. But instead of chucking out
the nasty Norris, he wheedles and whines
and Rita makes him apologise to Emily,
which he does, even if he doesnt mean half
of what he says.
And finally this month, Tim and Jason go
off to work in Newcastle leaving little Faye
home alone in the flat. Tim thinks Fayes
staying with Anna while hes away but only
takes Fayes word for this and doesnt check
with Anna. Fayes left on her own in the flat
with no friends and no food.

UK-US TAX INFORMATION

How Multinationals

Tax Deal!

WITH SO much publicity being given to

the small amount of tax currently paid by
well-known companies, I thought it would
be a good topic to write about. Whilst it is
unlike my other columns, I hope youll find
it interesting to find out how and why the
tax for corporations is so different from tax
for individuals.
For many years countries have received
only a small amount of their tax revenue
from the profits of corporations. The current percentage in both the US and the UK
is around nine percent of total tax revenue.
Many countries have reduced the tax rates
for corporations over the past few years,
so the top US rate of 35 percent is one of
the highest in the world. This higher rate
does not seem to result in greater receipts
for the government!
In the UK, companies pay corporation
tax which has separate rules from income
tax. It was introduced in 1965; prior to that
companies paid income tax. In the US,
there is no separate corporation tax and
companies pay income tax, calculated in
the same way as for individuals.
Traditionally, companies can have a
large number of employees in a foreign

country, and can pay a large amount in

employment taxes, whilst still not paying
much or any corporation tax. Since employment taxes are an expense of the business,
they will be a deduction in calculating any
profit of the company. A foreign company
makes an economic decision at head-office
level whether or not to remain in a country,
and if they leave they are not there to see
the fallout in lost jobs and the knock-on
local effects. The political consequences
of such a loss can (if they know about it in
advance) encourage a government to offer
all types of inducements, including financial
offers and tax holidays, to keep a business
operation alive.
When did you last receive a financial
incentive or tax holiday from a government?
They tend be made to businesses, not to
people. Tax law is written in a way to give
tax advantages to companies. A person
can only be physically present in one
place a company can have a presence
in any number. A company can create any
number of subsidiaries almost overnight in
virtually any country it decides upon and
can include all the expenses incurred to

AS WE GO to press, the world sits in anticipation because the Duchess of Cambridge

is finally in labor, and. ITS A BOY!!! And
we are left to ponder this: How great a world
would this be if the birth of every baby was
met with such enthusiasm?
But that enthusiasm is not going to meet
the birth of Kirsty and Maxs baby. Why?
Because there is no baby!! Kirsty continues
the charade thinking if she can just shag
him enough, she WILL get pregnant and
wont have to say she was lying about being
pregnant, but it aint happening. And now
its time to start with scans and doctors appointments and Kirsty is close to having to
spill the beans...
The old Bill cannot seem to protect Liam
or his family from the gang that is continually
harrassing him, making him a prisoner in
his home and unable to protect Tiffany and
Morgan from them so he takes matters
into his own hands and calls Ricky in Dubai
and asks if he can come over. And just like
that Liam goes to live with Ricky, leaving us
to wonder if they ran out of options for the
character or if they only plan to disappear
him and recast him (as has happened to so
many child actors before him)...
Elsewhere... Both Tamwar and Big Mo
are MIA. Hmmm... Carol has begun dating
Masood but after some initial giddiness she
has inexplicably become reticent and conscious of her age or something. No news on
the Alfie/Roxy/Kat front... Laurens drinking
has gotten so out of control that she cannot
hide it anymore...
Despite Phils attempts to thwart it, Lola
gets Lexi back! But not before some harrowing moments when Lola finally realizes that
reduce tax liability. It takes a little bit longer
to create people and they are definitely not
income-producing for a number of years! A
group of companies can file a consolidated
tax return, which would be like individuals
filing a household return.
The big advantage US companies have
in terms of their overseas subsidiaries is
that they can defer paying tax on any profits
until the funds are sent back to the US. This
is the reason why so many companies are
sitting on huge sums they are waiting to
bring back to the US. There has been some
talk (mainly by the companies themselves)
about the US government providing them
with a tax waiver for funds brought back.
You wont need to have read many of my
columns to know the position for individuals is very different there is no question
of deferring tax liability and the IRS is
looking for penalties rather than providing
a waiver! If youre looking for fairness, dont
look at tax law!

Sharon is addicted to prescription pain killers

(she even stole some from Tanyas house,
leaving Lauren to take the blame). But when
Lola finds Sharon passed out while babysitting Lexi she fears not only for Lexis safety
but also what could happen if she tells. She
is powerless. Fortunately she gets Lexi back,
and when former crack addict Phil finds out
about Sharons habit, he ironically kicks her
to the curb. Now hes back to being alone...
Ian is back to his old self and desperate
once again to prove himself to the Square,
so he plans to open his own restaurant,
Ian Beale Le Square, but he cant get a
bank loan and since Lucy forced him to turn
over all assets after his return from mental
breakdown, he has no funding of his own. But
he gets a silent investor, Janine. How many
ex-hookers give their ex-johns business
loans? Not many, I think, so we dont expect
this to end well. But Ian also finds a stash of
cash that had belonged to Derek and with
that he goes extravagant with renovation and
supplies. Eventually he runs out of cash and
resorts to stealing blank checks from Lucy.
At the opening, who turns up but the long lost
(new) Peter Beale. Oh, and when they unveil
the sign, it says Scarletts, a little gift from
not-so-silent investor Janine who says that

if he tries to change it shell recall her loan.

She then promptly takes baby Scarlett and
leaves the Square (after finding out nanny
Alice has been secretly letting Michael see
his daughter). Hopefully Kate wont do the
same thing to Wills...

More Questions: British

Lawmakers To Recall Murdoch
By Raphael Satter
RUPERT MURDOCH welcomes the
chance to reappear before British lawmakers to answer questions about a leaked
recording in which he appeared to dismiss
evidence of wrongdoing at his UK newspaper titles, News Corp said last month.
The recording obtained by the ExaroNews website and broadcast on Britains Channel 4 caught Murdoch describing the allegations against his journalists as
next to nothing, boasting that his lawyers
were refusing to actively cooperate
with investigators, and speaking dismissively about accusations of bribery leveled
against his newspaper empire.
Were talking about payments for news
tips from cops, he was quoted as saying.
Thats been going on a hundred years.
John Whittingdale, who chairs the
House of Commons Culture, Media and
Sport Committee, said his colleagues voted
last month to recall Murdoch for questions
over the recording. In a brief telephone
interview, Whittingdale said the commit-

Rupert Murdoch
tees letter inviting Murdoch back had not
yet been sent and that he could not provide
any details on when the mogul would be
asked to reappear.
Mudochs company said he welcomes
the opportunity to answer further questions.
He looks forward to clearing up any
misconceptions as soon as possible, News
Corp said in a statement.

Archbishop Embarrassed By
Link To Payday Loan Firm
THE ARCHBISHOP of Canterbury
says the Church of England will examine
indirect links to a payday loan firm he
had criticized.
Archbishop Justin Welby told Britains Total Politics magazine in an issue
published last month that the church
was ready to compete with payday
lenders in hopes of putting them out of
business. He claims the firms, who offer small, short-term loans at sky-high
interest rates, prey on the most vulnerable in society.
The Financial Times revealed July 26
that church funds were invested in Accel
Partners, an American venture capital
firm that led payday lender Wongas
2009 fundraising.
Welby told the BBC that the world
was complex and that he was embar-

rassed by the revelations.

But he says he remains committed
to helping support alternatives to the
lenders.

The DeLorean DMC-12 Story

(Part I next month the Britowned DeLorean US operation)
YOU BUILT a time machine from a
DeLorean? Well the way I see it if youre
going to build a time machine in a car you
may as well build it with a bit of style replied
Doc. Well the Doc must have had very similar
thoughts that John DeLorean had when he
decided to build his new super car.
Im sure that John DeLorean had relationships with many of the top automobile stylists in the United States but it was an Italian
styled sports car that the American muscle
car creator wanted for the DeLorean debut.
I, myself, have never been able to figure out
why it is that more than 90 percent of the
worlds finest-styled motorcars come out
of Italy. To further supplement a successful
design John DeLorean chose one of the best
Italy could offer, this new concept was to be
styled by Giugiaro.
So, how come a motor car engineered
by a Detroit motor executive, fashioned by
an Italian award winning automobile stylist,
powered by an engine developed by a joint
consortium from Peugeot, Renault and Volvo,
is featured in a column about Great British
Cars? It is because the DeLorean was made
in Great Britain, in Dunmurry, Northern Ireland
to be exact, a small village situated between
Belfast and Lisburn. Dunmurry is one of the
many villages around that area previously
known as linen villages.
There was a huge financial incentive
offered to DeLorean to build a new factory there; the Northern Ireland Development

August 2013

ujnews.com

Agency funded DeLorean around 100m. Renault was contracted to build the new factory,
which later employed over 2,000 workers at
its peak production of the DeLorean DMC-12.
In 1973 the Northern Ireland governments
decision to fund this new car building company seemed like a safe investment. Due to
the political situation at the time, in Northern
Ireland the manufacturing industries were in
decline, so what better collateral to boost the
economy. Having an extremely successful
former vice president of one of the largest
corporations in the world start a business on
your soil seems like a winner. Plus welcoming a man who plans on building automobiles
in large quantities that have been designed
by the same man, who, eventually would be
named car designer of the century, no less
,also seemed to be an easy decision.
DRAFTED
Born in Detroit, Michigan in 1925, John
DeLorean attended public grade schools
before attending Technical College for automotive drafting and design before WWII interrupted his education when he was drafted
for military service and served three years
in the US Army and received an honourable
discharge. After the hostilities he acquired a
part time job at Chrysler and furthered his
education by gaining a Bachelor of Science
degree in Industrial Engineering. Following
his degree, rather than working full time in
the automotive business, DeLorean sold life
insurance for the purpose of improving his
communication skills. He eventually started
working full time at Chrysler; the company ran
a post-graduate educational facility named
the Chrysler Institute of Engineering, which
allowed DeLorean to advance his education
while gaining real-world experience in automotive engineering.
The hardworking DeLorean graduated
from the facility with a Masters Degree in
Automotive Engineering; he also attended
night classes at the University of Michigans
Ross School of Business to earn credits for
his MBA, which he completed in 1957. The
now well-educated John DeLorean moved
to Packard Motor Company and then on
to General Motors Pontiac Division where

DeLorean DMC-12
he quickly climbed the ranks. DeLoreans
most notable contribution to Pontiac was the
Pontiac GTO (Gran Turismo Omologato), a
muscle car named after the Ferrari 250 GTO.
It evolved from the practical 1961 Pontiac
Tempest, which DeLorean later evolved into
the Pontiac LeMans.
At the age of 40, he had broken the record for youngest division head at GM, and
was determined to continue his string of
successes. He went on to GMs Chevrolet
Division and was responsible for the Chevrolet Nova which became the most popular
Chevy ever made having sold over a million.
When his promotion to President of GM was
virtually assured John DeLorean surprised
the whole motor industry by quitting, paving
the way for his own Delorean car-making
enterprise.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Enter Giorgetto Giugiaro, an Italian Automobile designer famous for his super car
designs but also a designer of popular everyday vehicles. His accomplishments include
the Ferrari 250 Berlinetta Bertone, De Tomaso
Mangusta, Iso Grifo, and Maserati Ghibli
plus a host of other notable super cars. His
studios include Bertone, Ghia and Italdesign
Giugiaro. The list of Giugiaro designed motor
cars is upwards of one hundred including
the best-selling VW Golf, Jetta, Passat and
Scirocco, he was also responsible for the

styling of the infamous Yugo. In 1999 he was

named the car designer of the century. In the
1970s Giugiaro designs switched course to
introduce the highly angular folded paper
era of the 1970s. Straight lined designs such
as the BMW M1, Maserati Bora, and Maserati Merak followed before a softer approach
returned in the Lamborghini Cala, Maserati
Spyder, and Ferrari GG50. It was during the
folded paper era that the DeLorean DMC-12
design was conceived. However, the decision
to make the bodywork from a stainless steel
alloy was probably John DeLoreans. Stainless steel is not as easily formable as regular
steel but the folded paper design approach
lent itself well. It was sleek and stylish for
the 1970s, the gull wing doors gave the car
an exotic touch and it was corrosion proof
to an extent. Approximately 9,000 cars were
produced at Dunmurry, the break-even
number was estimated to be around 12,000
units, so due in part to the US Securities &
Exchange Commission and a lack of further
funding from the British government saw the
Delorean project cease.
UNFAVOURABLE
Quality control, cost overruns, and unfavourable exchange rates also took their toll
and in 1982 the company had to close. Near
the end, in a desperate attempt to raise the
funds his company needed to survive, John
DeLorean was filmed appearing to accept

subsequently acquitted of charges brought
against him on the basis of entrapment. It was
the end though for the gull winged DCM-12,
although in 1985 the Back to the Future film
trilogy immortalized the DMC-12g. The films
are my 12-year-old daughter Elianas and
my own all time favourites and I even have
to give credit to her for helping me write part
of this article.
Out of the 9,000 DeLoreans made it is
estimated that there are about 6,500 still
remaining (a testament probably to the
stainless steel construction) and the demand
these cars still retain. Sadly though, their
production days are over as we cant return
to the past.
But, the famous DeLorean DCN-12 can

past exactly but Back to the Future. A British

UK Man Jailed Over

US School Threat
On Facebook
A BRITISH man was sentenced July 9 to
more than two years in jail for threatening
to kill 200 people in a Facebook posting
that caused thousands of Tennessee children to stay home from school.
Reece Elliott from South Shields in
northeast England pleaded guilty in April
to making malicious comments.
The online posting threatening gun violence was made anonymously in February
on a memorial page set up for a Tennessee
student who had died.
Judge James Goss sentenced 24-yearold Elliott to two years and four months in
prison, telling him the grossly offensive
comments were driven by no more than
self-indulgent nastiness.
SENTENCING
Elliott, who wept upon sentencing, had
written of killing his father first then
going in fast.
Im gonna kill hopefully at least 200
before I kill myself, he posted on the
memorial page. So you want to tell the
deputy, Im on my way.
The threat led to 2,900 children missing
class in Warren County amid heightened
tensions following the school shooting
in Newtown, Connecticut, which killed
26 people.
Defense lawyer John Wilkinson told the
judge at Newcastle Crown Court that Elliott could not explain his behavior, which
the defendant called idiotic, childish and
pathetic.
Detectives said they were about to arrest Elliott before he turned himself in at
a police station.

Church Of England To Act

Against Anti-Gay Bullying

JAMES VAN LEER

Podcast Looks At The

Funny Side Of AngloAmerican Differences

BRITAIN and America have always

laughed at their cultural variances, but
thanks to the relatively new medium of
podcasting, and a savvy Brit, theres a
modern way to do it.
Since its launch last year, Transatlantically Speaking has been providing
amusement for British expats in the USA,
American expats in Europe and anglophiles everywhere.
Show host James Van Leer is from
southeast London, but has lived in California for over 20 years, via a spell living
in Asia while travelling the world.
After settling in the US, James wrote,
directed, produced, edited and acted in his
own movie back in 2004. Now a citizen
of this fine nation, James feels his twenty
years of experience being immersed
in American culture give him a unique
perspective, and that a podcast is an ideal
outlet for all his ridiculous observations
on both cultures.
Co-host Paul Johnson represents the
American perspective, which often leads to
some spirited exchanges; on a recent show,
a discussion about the word flatware
which the British dont use devolved into
an argument about the relative flatness of
forks and plates.
The last half of each show is a quiz
called Thats Not English, which pits
Johnson against a weekly British phone-in
guest to see who can identify more words
from their opponents vernacular. This
leads to some hilarious guesses at the
definitions of her majestys pleasure
and sloppy joe.
Transatlantically Speaking is a weekly
podcast founded in December 2012. Listeners can access directly from the shows
website, transatlanticallyspeaking.com, or
on a mobile device via iTunes. A selection
of popular podcatching sites also carry the
show, including Blackberry, Zune, Stitcher
and Miro.

THE ARCHBISHOP of Canterbury has

announced a campaign to stamp out antigay bullying in Church of England schools,
acknowledging that attitudes toward sexuality have changed.
Archbishop Justin Welby, spiritual leader of the worlds Anglican Communion,
stressed that the Church of England wasnt
changing its teaching on gay relationships,
but that it would be absurd and impossible to ignore shifting cultural attitudes.
He told the opening of the General
Synod of the Church of England that
the majority of the population rightly
detests homophobic behavior, adding that
sometimes they look at us and see what
they dont like.
He said the church must demonstrate
a profound commitment to stereotyping,
announcing that the Church of England is
developing a program for use in its schools
to stamp out anti-gay bullying.
In another controversial issue, members
of the General Synod said last month they
would back plans to draft new proposals
paving the way for women bishops in July
or November 2015.

UK Police Charge 12
Anti-Fracking Protesters
POLICE SAY 12 people have been
charged with a variety of offenses in relation to ongoing protests over shale gas
extraction in southern England.
Surrey Police said last month that they
have made two further arrests on top of
the 16 a day earlier, of whom 12 are facing charges.
The charges range from assault on
police to preventing drivers and workers
from entering a test-drilling site.
The protesters are campaigning against
the extraction of gas by hydraulic fracturing, known as fracking.
They have been gathered for three
days in Balcombe, England, where Cuadrilla Resources Ltd is poised to start test
drilling.
Cuadrilla has said it intends to conduct
only exploratory drilling in a temporary
operation that will not include hydraulic
fracturing.

Toddler Killer Jon Venables Granted Parole

ONE OF BRITAINS most notorious child
killers will be paroled a second time after
he was sent back to prison over a child
pornography conviction.
Jon Venables was 11 years old when
he was convicted along with another boy
of abducting two-year-old James Bulger
from a shopping center and beating him
to death by an isolated railway line in
Liverpool in 1993.
The two killers who were 10 years old
at the time of the crime were given life
sentences, but were released on parole in
2001 after being given new identities to
protect them. The move sparked a contentious debate in Britain, where memories of

Privacy Group Sues Britain

Over NSA Surveillance
By Raphael Satter
A LONDON-BASED advocacy group
filed suit over Americas international
data dragnet last month, a complaint which
one expert says could have significant
ramifications for the future of US-British
intelligence-sharing.
In a complaint filed with the Investigatory Powers Tribunal, Britains interception
watchdog, Privacy International alleges
that the National Security Agency and its
British counterpart GCHQ are spying on
one anothers citizens and swapping the intercepted information without proper oversight. The complaint also accuses GCHQ of
overstepping British law through the mass
monitoring of UK communications.
GCHQ declined to comment on the suit.
UK officials have repeatedly insisted their
spies work within the law.
Privacys suit is one of several which
have been spawned by NSA surveillance
revelations.
In the United States, groups including
the Electronic Privacy Information Center
and the American Civil Liberties Union
have said they are suing over the agencys
spying. In Britain, civil liberties group Liberty says it is finalizing its own complaint
before the Investigatory Powers Tribunal.

the murder have remained sharp.

Venables was jailed again in 2010
after pleading guilty to downloading and
distributing dozens of indecent images of
children, breaching the terms of his release
from juvenile detention and reigniting the
debate over whether he should have been
released in the first place.
PUSHED
Earlier this year, Jamess mother, Denise Fergus, and father, Ralph Bulger, both
addressed a parole healing and pushed for
Venables to remain in prison.
But the UK parole board last month
confirmed that Venables had been granted
parole; it declined to provide details on

when he will be released. The Ministry

of Justice declined to comment on the
case, but said re-release of offenders is
ordered by the parole board once it is
satisfied they can be safely managed in
the community.
Fergus took to Twitter to vent her frustration, writing: Just dont believe what
Ive got 2 go through. AGAIN.
Ralph Bulgers lawyer, Robin Makin,
said in a statement that his client is disappointed and dismayed by the reckless
decision to release Venables.
The decision to release Jon Venables
is misguided and fills Ralph with terror,
Makin said.

n British Government Changes at our
two Florida branches! Replacing Lorraine
Daniel-Palmer who has moved on, in the
Orlando Consulate we have a new Vice-Consul, Mark Smithson. Now responsible for
managing consular services for Florida,
Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, he
previously headed up the Consular section
in Barcelona from 2007. The majority of
the consular team is now based in Miami,
following a reorganisation earlier this year
with Anna Mander joining as Pro-Consul
from the Consulate-General in Chicago, and
Marin Daley hired as new Consular assistant.
Orlando Consul Dean Churm whom many
of you know from previous mentions in this
column, is in the process of relocating to
Miami but has also assumed responsibility
for the consular teams in Atlanta, Boston,
Denver, Houston, New York, and Washington
DC as well as Florida. My, what a workload
Dean. Hope Downing Street fattened your
paycheck a little too! Mark Smithson told
me: Dean Churm and I will work with
Consul-General Kevin McGurgan to support
British nationals in the region. Contact Info:

254-3300. But first expats in Florida should
consult the Governments website www.
ukinusa.fco.gov.uk.
n PINT AND A PIE CORNER: Herewith
one Florida British pub picked at random from
my database. This is not a recommendation,
unless I have personally checked out the pub,
so you may deem it divine or dire. Pop in and
see: THE ENGLISH PUB in Naples (239)
775-5727. Authentic and popular meeting
place for local Brits, though I havent been
there in person since 1993. Owners have
changed over the years, some British (like the
outstanding Derek Bennett) some American,
so ask the pub for current Mein Host.
n UK-USA CULTURE CORNERthe
breathtaking ignorance of the facts among
some Americans stuns me. Comment by
Conan OBrien on his show: The Queen
said she would like the royal baby to be
born before she goes on vacation. Then
someone reminded her shes more or less
been on vacation since 1952. That 88-yearold great grandmother has been working
tirelessly for over 60 years. Even when on
holiday, she must work through mountains
of required paperwork from the red boxes
sent daily by the Government. Bet OBriens
own granny stopped working years ago.
Howard Stern asked on TV for a comment
on the Royal birth said he had zero interest
in the Royal Family. Fair enough. But he went
on at length berating the Queen for being
bone idle and a money-draining sponge on
the UK economy. Ignorance of the facts
is always what riles me. As every official
UK cost-benefit analysis of the finances
involved ever done has proven, the Royal
family brings in more revenue (in tourist
spending) than it costs the British taxpayer.
As witnessed by the ever-present throngs of
American visitors peering through the gates
of Buckingham Palace.
n FOOTIE FACT: I just found out our

FLORIDA

Miami Heat Superstar LeBron James part

owns Liverpool FC. Fascinating to know the
genius of hands on a ball is interested in
feet on a ball.
n EMAIL recently received from an
American woman in Davenport, Florida:
My name is Marcie (real name supplied)
and I would like to meet some nice British
men. Not only am I new to Florida but I am
just recently back from Afghanistan where
I worked as a US contractor. I miss the fellowship of British company. Believe it or not
the Brits were the only ones crazy enough to
have underground bars in Afghanistan. I was
in a relationship with a northerner (Wigan)
and I have to say I am finding it difficult to
convert back to Yanks. I love the culture
differences and diversity Signed Hopeless
in Davenport. Clever, not crazy, of Brits to
build such bars, say I. Plus a Brit, wherever
he be, has to have his local. (FYI: I put Marcie
out of her misery and steered her to where
Brits gather in her area).

n FLORIDA-UK TRADE: Speaking June
24 at the Florida Chamber of Commerce
International Town Hall, held at the downtown Miami Chamber of Commerce, British
Consul-General Kevin McGurgan was supporting the proposed transatlantic free trade
negotiated at the 2013 G8 summit in Ireland.
This would mean a free trade deal between
the European Union and the USA. The UK
is heavily in favour, he said, Its worth
fighting for and should be unprecedented
in scale, scope and ambition. He informed
attendees (I was due to attend for FABB and
my office is opposite the Chamber, but other
work precluded) that the USA and the European Union accounts for about 40 percent

of world trade. Florida goods exported to

the EU totaled $6.3bn and Florida products
exported to the UK in 2012 reached $1.2bn,
a four percent increase. British firms employ
39,000 people in Florida making Britain the
largest foreign job supporter in the Sunshine
State. For further UK specific information
phone the Miami British Consulate on (305)
400-6400 and press the Trade option.
n FLORIDA FACT: Miami airport reported
that UK visitors outnumbered all others from
Europe in 2012. Germany, Spain, France,
Italy, Switzerland, Portugal, Netherlands
and Russia. Not surprised. Walking down
Lincoln Road I always hear British accents.
Alas, too many are emerging from pasty
bodies in ManU shirts!

Samuel Beckett Manuscript

Sells For $1.4m
SOTHEBYS says the manuscript of
Irish writer Samuel Becketts first novel
has sold at auction for almost 1m.
Britains University of Reading
bought Murphy, written in 1935-36,
for 962,500 at the July 10 sale.
The six exercise books contain the
heavily reworked text of the novel as
well as notes, doodles and sketches
of figures including James Joyce and
Charlie Chaplin.
Its many revisions give insights into
Becketts creative process. The universitys vice chancellor, David Bell, said
acquiring the manuscript will provide
unparalleled opportunities to learn
more about one of the greatest writers
in living memory, if not all time.

His widow, Rebecca, just days before

There are so many kind and generous people out there, she said in a pool

Thousands Pay Respects At Slain Soldiers Funeral

RELATIVES of a British soldier killed in
broad daylight by alleged Islamic extremists say they were deeply grateful for the
support they have received from the public
ahead of his funeral July 12.
The funeral, at Bury Parish Church, near
Manchester, was attended by thousands
throughout the streets. The crowds created a touching moment when they fell
silent to remember a fallen comrade and
national hero.
Veterans, fusiliers and people from
across the country stood in the heat of
the sun for three hours to watch Fusilier
Rigbys coffin pass by.
United in their respect, they gathered
for the 25-year-old from Middleton whose
brutal death has touched the nation. Many
clapped as his regimental colleagues, and
then Lee Rigbys family, filed into the
church for the one-hour service.
Lees two-year-old son Jack clung to
his teddy and wore a T-shirt saying My
Daddy, My Hero.
People from Fusilier Rigbys home
town of Middleton joined mourners at
his funeral
Prime Minister David Cameron and
London mayor Boris Johnson were among
those in the church supporting the family.

Officials Ask Public To

Avoid Paper Lanterns
Call The Midwife:
A Memoir of Birth,
Joy & Hard Times
By Jennifer Worth

IT IS because of the current PBS British series

Call The Midwife, that I was intrigued to seek
the origin of the show. This has been a summer
of royal baby arrival watching and bets being
placed for the latest addition to the Royal family.
As a granddaughter of two Irish grannies who
birthed over ten children each at home, I was
curious about the process of homebirths, as my
children were born in the hospital one natural
and one emergency C-section.
The Sunday night show is appealing in its
ensemble cast of young British nurses with a
multi age group of nuns who take care of the
pregnant women of the docklands. The show
comes with a warning as the births are discreet
yet quite realistic. The birthing mothers are giving the real pain and joy of birthing as well as
vocalizing the economic challenges of another
mouth to feed and their own self perseverance.
Call The Midwife is the 1950s memoirs
of Jennifer Worth, a retired district nurse and
midwife in the East End of London. Jennifer
wrote the book in response to an article by Ms
Terri Coates in the Royal College of Midwives
Journal, who argued that midwives were an
under-represented profession in literature and
she called on a midwife somewhere to do for
midwifery what James Herriot did for vets.
Mrs Worth handwrote the initial volume of her
memoirs and she sent them to Ms Coates. Fast
forward as Terri Coates served as an advisor
on the books and the television adaption.
Author Jennifer Worth know as nurse Jenny
Lee (her maiden name) passed away due to
cancer at age 75 in in 2011. The first volume,
Call The Midwife, was originally published in
2002 and reissued in 2007. It has become a
bestseller with subsequent volumes, Shadows
of the Workhouse and Farewell to the East.
Jennifers vivid memories of the East End
stayed very alive in her memory. Her writings
made the past come alive again with describing the old ways of life, the people and the
poverty. Jennifer is quoted as saying Most
people in London at that time didnt know the
East End they pushed it aside. There was no
law, no lighting, bedbugs and fleas. It was a
hidden place, not written about at all.
Author Jennifer Worth is gifted as an author
as listed in her obituary (born September 25,
1935 May 31, 2011) with the powers of
description, authenticity of detail and richness
of characterization. Jennifer was a staff nurse
at the London hospital in Whitechapel, east
London. There she lived with an Anglican
community of nuns, the Sisters of St John
the Divine, who worked amongst the poor it
was this experience which inspired Jennifers
lifelong dedication to the Christian faith. After
her nursing career, while married and raising
her two daughters, Jennifer embarked on a
musical career through piano and song where
after attending music college she taught and
performed solo and in choirs throughout the
UK and Europe.

By James Brooks
TOP BRITISH fire officials are calling on
the public to avoid using paper lanterns
after one such contraption sparked a huge
and costly fire in central England.
The Chief Fire Officers Association
said in a statement last month that paper
lanterns which are heated by candles and
launched into the air during celebrations
pose a threat to people and livestock and
can cause significant property damage.
Video evidence showed that a big blaze
at a plastic recycling plant near Birmingham last month was started by a paper
lantern that floated over the site, causing
6m in damage.
Paper lanterns are popular in many
countries but have been banned in most of
Germany and also in parts of the United
States, where they are seen as a fire hazard
and even a possible threat to aircraft.
Chief fire officer Vij Randeniya said the
fire department wants to educate the British

public that the lanterns posed a significant

danger to the area around them.
In a statement, Prime Minister David
Camerons office said it is working to
raise public awareness of the risks of sky
lanterns, but that only a tiny percentage
(0.2 percent) of outdoor fires were paper
lantern- related.
Fire officers also claimed that as well
as being a fire hazard to everything from
thatched roofs to hazardous waste, paper
lanterns pose a risk to livestock due the
metal wire used to construct them.

Temporarary Parking To Be
Allowed On Double Yellow Lines

IN AN INNOVATIVE move, Englands

drivers will be given a break which involves legal parking on double yellow
lines.
The Government plan has been devised
to encourage shopping on the High Streets
of towns and cities.
Parking and waiting on double yellow
lines is prohibited unless stated for all
vehicles except for those making commercial deliveries and pick-ups, blue badge
holders and the emergency services.
Some councils already allow motorists
to park free of charge for up to 30 minutes
close to shops and Conservative ministers
in the coalition government are keen to
extend that to give a shot in the arm to
small shops.
President of the Automobile Association, Edmund King said: If people are
worried about paying a fortune in fines, it
will make them more likely to shop online
or go to out-of-town shopping centres,

he said. For too long, parking has been

a revenue raiser. It is time to end that.
Councils have rejected suggestions they
are using parking fines as cash cows.
BETTER
But, The Local Government Association, which represents more than 300 councils in England and Wales, said double
yellow lines kept people safe and traffic
moving and there were better ways to
attract people to High Streets.
Removing parking restrictions on
these parts of the road could jeopardise
the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and other
motorists and create further traffic jams,
said Councillor Peter Box, chairman of its
economy and transport board.
Councils need to play their part in
reining back in the over-zealous culture of
municipal parking enforcement, a spokesman for the Department of Communities
and Local Government said.
They should adopt a common sense
approach. Ministers are considering what
further steps can be taken to ensure that
town hall parking policies and practices
support local high streets.
Speaking last month, Lib Dem transport
minister Norman Baker said it would
be wrong for ministers to interfere with
councils parking policies. However, he
confirmed the maximum and minimum
fine levels that are set by the government
are to be reviewed.

Environmental Activists Scale Londons Shard

GREENPEACE says six of its environmental activists are attempting to scale
Western Europes tallest building to protest
drilling in the Arctic by oil companies.
The group said the six climbers, all
women, hoped to affix an artwork to the top
of the 1,017-foot tower known as the Shard.
Greenpeace says the climbers are from

Britain, Canada, Sweden, Poland, the

Netherlands and Belgium.
It says the Renzo Piano-designed
72-story Shard had been chosen because
it looms over the London offices of Royal
Dutch Shell.
Londons Metropolitan Police Force
says officers are monitoring the situation.

If you cant stand the heat,

Get out of the Kitchen!
(Harry Truman, 1950s)

ANYONES topic of conversation these days

revolve about the weather... well of course
Brits are well known to always talk about
it, but... even last months UJ featured it
on the first page! It really has been quite
diverse, at time of writing it is hotter up in
New York than it is here in Florida, and I
had a friend who recently came back from
a cruise to Alaska, and sweltered in her
clothes as they thought it would be colder
it was in the 80-90!
No one wants to be slaving in the heat
of a kitchen, so I was trying to think of
something that wouldnt be too taxing, the
worst is 10 minutes in the oven the food
I mean of course! It also takes advantage of
the wonderful selection of fresh vegetables
that are easily available this time of the year.
I am departing from the usual this month,
I generally always try to feature traditional
British cooking, most of the time, but this
one is from our years when we lived in
Wisconsin, back in the 60-70s and I cant
take full credit for it, but I have adapted it
to my tastes. Even though it is the heart
of summer, entertaining still goes on, and
every time I would feature this pizza it
has always been very popular, and I have
given out the recipe to so many. It needs
to be refrigerated overnight or preferably
24 hours, to get all the flavours to merge.
Hope you enjoy it.
I do need to ask you dear reader, for
suggestions of what to feature; what do you
want a recipe for? Or do you have a special
one you would like to share? I do get many
requests, and usually am able to comply
with them, however one I got recently from
a Scottish reader is for Caramel Cake
she had in school. I have a rough idea of
what it is from a dear Scottish friend here
who remembers it, but she wasnt sure
of the recipe itself, so any help from you
would be great
I also need to apologise for a typo on the
Queen Mums Cake featured last month. It

Top with any assortment of finely
chopped raw vegetables, I like to use at
least 7-8 Suggestions include: tomatoes,
green or red pepper, olives, cucumber,
cauliflower, spring onions, grated carrot...whatever there is that you like. I like
to sprinkle the top with finely chopped
herbs also. Cover with plastic wrap and
refrigerate for 24 hours, slice into pieces
for serving.

Golden Games:
UK Says Olympics
Brought Billions
AUTHORITIES said last month the 2012
London Olympics and Paralympic Games
gave the country an almost 10bn boost.
The Government said that the UK
economy has seen an increase in business
from contracts, sales and foreign investment stemming from a conference and a
series of events tied to the games.
The figures the first released in a
four-year plan are important because
staging the games is expensive. Organizers repeatedly promised Britons that the
9.3bn spent to host the event would be
money well spent.
The latest numbers, however, dont
include the effect of tourism. The Olympics offers a unique platform to show off
a countrys finer points. Tourism officials
say images of castles, cliffs and countryside will bring dividends for decades.

Libyan Troops To Get

Training In Britain
THE GOVERNMENT says up to 2,000
Libyan troops will be brought to the UK
for basic infantry and junior leadership
training.
Foreign Secretary William Hague says
the Libyan government will cover the costs
of the training, which will be carried out by
the British army at Bassingbourn Barracks
in southern England.
He told British lawmakers in a written
statement last month that all the trainees
will be fully vetted by the Libyan government, with checks on their medical, physical and behavioral suitability.
Hague said the Libyan government also
has guaranteed that all troops successfully
trained in the UK will be brought back
to Libya and reintegrated into its armed
forces.
The training builds on Britains assistance to Libya on security matters in
the wake of Moammar Gadhafis ouster.

Prison Sentence
Doubled For Former
Broadcaster Hall
DISGRACED BBC broadcaster Stuart
Hall heard from a court last month that
his recent 15-month sentence for indecent
assaults had been doubled.
Increasing the term to 30 months, Lord
Chief Justice Lord Judge said the original
term had been unduly lenient given the
impact on Halls victims.
Hall, of Wilmslow, Cheshire, had admitted this June, 14 counts against girls
aged from nine to 17 between 1967 and
1985.
The 83-year-olds term was increased
after the attorney generals appeal.
Lord Judge said some of Halls victims
had written to the court and said they were
disappointed by Dominic Grieves decision to challenge the length of the sentence.
However, the BBC reported he said that
Hall had got away with it for decades
and had lived a lie for more than half
of his life.
POWER
He added that Hall would have been
seen as a figure of power and authority and influence by his victims and his
broadcasting career had put him in a
position of trust that he was then able to
exploit.
Lord Judge, Lady Justice Rafferty and
Mrs Justice Macur ruled that one of the
15-month sentences Hall received for the
assaults should run consecutively to the
others, thereby doubling his prison term.
Hall, listening to proceedings via video
link from HMP Preston, kept his head
bowed and showed no reaction as the
decision was announced.
The BBCs Home Affairs correspondent Danny Shaw said Hall would serve
half of his 30-month sentence, which
means he will be released in September
2014.

including Blood Brothers and Chicago.
In 2010 she was diagnosed with breast

British Comedy Figure Mel Smith

MEL SMITH, 60, the comedian whose
1980s evening news parody was a forerunner to comedic offerings such as Americas
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, has died
of heart attack.
Smith first shot to fame along with his
partner-in-comedy Griff Rhys Jones in Not
the Nine OClock News, an absurdist take
on staid BBC newscasts.
The show, which also introduced Britain
to Rowan Atkinsons Mr Bean, was a watershed, laying the ground for other current

affairs spoofs.
Smiths company,
Talkback Productions,
became a major force
in British comedy, responsible for shows including Sacha Baron
Cohens wince-inducing
Ali G and Steve Coogans hilariously
awkward Im Alan Partridge.
Agent Michael Foster says Smith died
at his home in northwest London.

Veteran British Broadcaster Alan Whicker

ALAN WHICKER,
87, known for his globespanning travel shows
over a career spanning
60 years, has died. He
was 87.
His spokeswoman,
Siobhan Connors, said
Whicker had been suffering from bronchial
pneumonia. She said he died at his home on
the Channel Island of Jersey early July 12.
Whicker served with the British Army

in Italy in World War II and later became

a war correspondent. He joined the BBC in
1957 with the Tonight program, but soon
after launched his Whickers World
series, which made him a household name.
Whickers World, a documentary program that ran from 1959 to 1990, showed
the broadcaster traveling the globe and
probing private worlds of the rich and
famous.
Whicker is survived by his longtime
partner Valerie Kleeman.

The British Beat At The Ford

Theatres, Hollywood

Dancing to the Music of the British Invasion and more

THE BRITISH BEAT presents dances to
iconic works by British artists such as Sir
Edward Elgar, The Beatles, Sir Elton John,
Sting, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, and
Adele, among others. This exciting production shows how British music influenced
and inspired generations of musicians and
dancers. Known for its Ballet Russes heritage,
PBDT branches out from their traditional
roots to pay homage to the British musical
experience with an explosive dance and
music retrospective.
In The British Beat, PBDTs artistic director Natasha Middleton combines a classical
ballet foundation with the innovation the
Ballets Russes and popular dance styles to
capture the evolution of English dance and
music. Athletically exciting dances and a
strong sense of theatricality are showcased
in this powerful production.
PBDT attracts first-class talent from
around the world, including Armenia, Asia,
Russia, and Spain. Dancers have previously
danced with such companies as American
Ballet Theatre, Armenian National Opera
Ballet, the Bolshoi Theatre Ballet, the Kirov
Opera and Ballet, the Korean National Ballet,
and the Chicago Ballet. In addition, PBDT
has worked with and developed many talented local dancers from Southern California.
Over 25 professional and company dancers perform in The British Beat, many of

whom have their own professional careers,

acting, dancing, singing and choreographing,
and can be seen on TV, in music videos, and
feature films. Featured dancers include Chris
Trousdale, who also sings, was a member
of the popular boy band Dream Street, is
in the new Disney show Shake it Up,and is
recording a dance/pop CD; Alexander Fost
from So You Think You Can Dance; and
Allan McCormick, who has just returned
from performing in La Rve in Las Vegas as
a dancer, acrobat and aerialist.
When the audience watches this show,
they are going to be thrilled reliving the
British Invasion all the way through to the
millennium, explains Natasha Middleton,
PBDTs Artistic Director.

British Officials
Ban Coca-Cola Ad,
Say Its Misleading
BRITAINS Ad Watchdog has banned
a Coca-Cola television ad because
they say it can mislead viewers about
how easy it is to burn off the calories
in a Coke.
The ad in question, a version of
which has aired in the US, shows a
variety of activities like dog walking,
dancing and laughing that it says would
burn off the 139 happy calories in a
single serving of the soft drink.
But the Advertising Standards Authority, which regulates advertising in
the UK, says the ad doesnt make clear
enough that all of the activities need
to be done in combination in order to
burn 139 calories.
It noted that some viewers who
complained thought only one of the
activities was needed.
Coca-Cola representatives did
not immediately return a request for
comment.
The worlds No 1 beverage company
has taken flack in recent years from
public health advocates who say that
the sugary drinks made by it and other
companies cause obesity.
The 30-second ad, first released in
the US in January, was part of efforts
to combat that by showcasing Coke
drinkers doing healthy activities.

UK Inflation Rises To 2.9 Percent In June

OFFICIAL FIGURES show that inflation

in Britain rose to a 14-month high of 2.9
percent in June.
The increase from Mays 2.7 percent
rate, reported last month by the Office for
National Statistics, was slightly less than
anticipated and may provide policymakers
at the Bank of England some extra breathing
space to work out what further measures
they can take to help the British economy.
However, analyst Chris Williamson of
Markit.com says that figure has added to
fears that stubbornly high price pressures

could smother or at least subdue the

economic recovery that has been slowly
taking hold in Britain.
But inflation clearly remains the UKs
bug-bear and calls into question just how
long this strong growth can persist for,
Williamson said. High prices look set to
continue to erode spending power, curbing the overall pace of economic growth.
Though growth in the first quarter measured a limp 0.3 percent, many analysts
predict the figure set for release later this
month will be more robust.

Prince Harry Qualifies As Apache Chopper Commander

BRITAINS defense ministry says
Prince Harry has qualified to command
an Apache attack helicopter the culmination of his training over the last
three years.
Harry, known as Captain Wales in
the army, earlier this year completed
a 20-week deployment in Afghanistan
as a co-pilot gunner on an Apache and
since then has flown missions in the UK
His commanding officer, Lt Col Tom

de la Rue, called the qualification a

tremendous achievement, saying in a
statement that 28-year-old Harry had
passed with flying colors.
The military said Harry had undergone months of training to prepare for
the test, which involved a grueling
six-hour flying assessment which took
him all over the UK and required him
perform a variety of tasks including
simulating a low-level attack.

Ex-Newcastle Striker Nile Ranger Charged With Rape

POLICE say former Newcastle striker Nile Ranger has been charged with rape.
The 22-year-old Englishman, who has been a free agent since leaving Newcastle in
March, will appear at Newcastle Magistrates Court on August 21.
Northumbria Police launched an investigation after Ranger was accused of rape in
the early hours of January 23 at a hotel in the Newcastle area.

at close. It was a close run thing, but England
won the first Test match at Trent Bridge, by 14

of 98, in the first innings which ultimately kept
the Aussies in the game. England 215 and 375

England demolished the Australians on
the final over of the fourth day of the second
Test at Lords, to win by 347 runs, July 21.

England bowlers proved lethal. England 361

Australia 128 and 235.

Golf; Casey And McDowell Prevail

Some well established Irish players failed
to survive the cut at the Irish Open at Carton
House. Rory McIIroy, Graeme McDowell,
Padraig Harrington and Darren Clarke were
four names missing from the third round. Paul
Casey ended up getting his name on the trophy
where a 14 under 274, put him three clear of
the field. The 35-year-old Englishman, was
involved in a nasty snowboarding accident
several years ago, that severely affected his
golf. It was his first victory in over two years,
after starting four behind the leaders in the
final round.
Graeme McDowell appeared to have a
clearer head at the French Open, a week
later, where a final round of 67, saw the
northern Irishman claim his third victory of
2013, carding a nine under 275. He was
four strokes ahead of South African, Richard
Sterne. McDowell won the PGAs Heritage
event earlier this year and the World MatchPlay Championship a month later. He had not
survived the cut however, in five of his last six
tournaments, and was hugely relieved his golf
had taken a turn for the better.

Phil Mickelson Wins At Castle

Stuart, Then Captures His Very
First British Open
Phil Mickelson had not won a tournament
on European soil for twenty years, but he
laid that dismal record to rest at the Scottish
Open at Castle Stuart, Inverness, July 14.
The popular American was tied after a 17
under par 271, with Branden Grace of South
Africa, but birdied the first play-off hole for victory. Same weekend, Scottish golfer Catriona

Matthew, was amongst the top

placings in the LPGAs Manulife
Financial Classic in Waterloo,
Ontario, where her third place
finish earned her $87,000 plus.
Matthew was three strokes distant of winner Hee Young Park,
whose ten under 61, in the third
round, aided her to a play-off win
over Angela Stanford, when both
finished with 16 under 258s.
Phil Mickelson followed up his Scottish
victory by winning his very first British Open at
Muirfield, July 18-21, where a spectacular final
round of five under 66, saw the 43-year-old
American win the claret jug. He had commenced the last eighteen, five behind leader
Lee Westwood, but while the Englishmans
chances slipped away at the end of the first
nine, Mickelson just got better and better. The
popular American finished with a three under
281, and was the only golfer to break par.
It was his fifth Major. He was three clear of
Swedens Henrik Stenson, who was a stroke
in front of Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood and
Adam Scott with Tiger a stroke behind them.
The first round saw Zach Johnson claim
the lead with a five under 66. Miguel Angel
Jimenez, a Spaniard who broke his leg in a skiing accident last winter and took four months
to heal, led the second round with a three
under 139, one stroke ahead of Tiger Woods.
Long faces for Luke Donald, Justin Rose and
Rory McIIroy, who did not survive the cut. Lee
Westwood was top of the leader-board after
the third round with a three under par, two
clear of Hunter Mahan and Tiger Woods and
the media began considering the first English
Open Champion since Nick Faldo in 1992.
Mickelson would put such chatter to rest.

Boxing: Macklin & Price Suffer,

Chisora Kos Unbeaten American

Middleweight Matthew Macklin, (29-5)

was in the ring at Connecticut, late June,
seeking the WBA World crown off the hard
punching, unbeaten Gennady Golovkin. It was
the third consecutive but unsuccessful attempt
at a world title for the battling Brummie. The
Kazakhstani (27-0) proved too powerful and
Macklin was counted out in the third round
after a brutal body punch.
British heavyweight David Prices re-match
with Tony Thompson at the Echo Arena,
Liverpool, July 6, did not go as planned.
Earlier this year, the experienced American
(38-3) had beat Price in the second round, and
revenge was the order for this fight. Price put
the 41-year-old on the canvas in the second
and everything appeared to be going to plan.
But suddenly the technical and artistic boxing skills went out the window, and the fight
developed into a full scale brawl. Thompson
certainly preferred this arrangement, and had
the Scouser on the ropes in the fifth, when
the referee stepped in for a standing count
and it was over. The six foot eight inch Price
(15-2), would later confess he had not kept
to the fight plan and should never had gone
toe to toe with Thompson. There were three
gold medals for Britain, at the European Union
Womens Boxing Championships in Hungary.
Flyweight Nicola Adams, bantamweight Lisa
Whiteside, and middleweight Savannah
Marshall took the honours. Former British heavyweight champion Dereck Chisora
(21-4) knocked out the unbeaten American,

Malik Scott (35-1-1) in the sixth round at the

Wembley Arena, July 20.

Northern Ireland ranked 111th.

met Panama in the final at Chicago, July 28.

Tyre Problems At Silverstone

Europes Minnows Battle It Out

Bayern Munich recently became the European Champions and Chelsea won the Europa
League Trophy, but already next seasons
European competitions were getting under
way last month. The first qualifying round
of the Europa Trophy, July 4-11 witnessed
three Welsh and three Ulster sides competing with a whole bunch of other European
minnows. Bala Town would notch up a 1-0
win at Rhyl, but lose 3-1 in Estonia to Lev
Tallinn. At Wrexham, Chris Budry leveled it
1-1 for Airbus UK, but a goalless second leg
saw Ventspils go through in Latvia. Deep joy
for Prestatyn Town who lost 2-1 at home to
Liepas Metalurg, but won 2-1 in Latvia, and
went through 4-3 on penalties. Glentoran
visited Iceland to tie KR Revykjavik 0-0, but
were beaten 3-0 in the home leg. Rosenburg
won 2-1 at Crusaders, and 7-2 in Norway.
Linfield conquered 2-0 in the Faeroes Island
against Itrottarpelag Fuglafjordur, and won
the Irish leg 3-0.
The first leg, second qualifying round July
18, saw Aaron Burns give Linfield a 1-0
away advantage in the 25th minute, winning
in Greece against FC Xanthi. The remaining
Welsh side, Prestatyn Town fought an uphill
encounter in Croatia, losing 5-0 to Rijeka. Two
Scots clubs joined the fray, where a Frazier
Wright goal gave St Johnstone a 1-0 win over
Rosenberg in Norway. In Sweden, Hibernian
were beaten 2-0 by Malmo.
The first leg of the second qualifying round
of the Champions League, July 17, witnessed
Scottish champions Celtic, out play the Ulster
champions Cliftonville in Belfast 3-0. Mikael
Lustig hit the net in the 25th minute, while
six minutes later Georgios Samaras made it
two, then six minutes from time, James Forrest got number three. Ryan Fraughan, put
Welsh Champions, The New Saints, ahead
in the eleventh minute at Wrexham, but Legia
Warsaw came back to win 3-1.

Pre-Season Tours

Lewis Hamilton led from the pole at the

British Grand Prix at Silverstone, June 30, but
nine laps later a tyre blew out. The Brit ended
up as last man, before fighting his way through
the field, eventually finishing in fourth place.
Mercedes Nico Roswell, took the laurels
with Mark Webber runner-up and Fernando
Alonso third. Four cars suffered blown tyres,
making it 20 incidents so far this year, and
Pirelli were immediate brought under the
microscope regarding their product.

Brazil Stun Spain

The Maracana Stadium, June 30, echoed
to the partisan enthusiasm of Brazilian soccer
fans as the nation went into celebration mode
after a 3-0 victory over Spain, to win the FIFA
Confederations Cup for the third consecutive
time. Brazil produced a magical display that
that had the World and Europeans Champions
on the back foot. Goals by Fred, in the 2nd and
47th minutes, and a third by Neymar, crushed
a Spanish side that had previously remained
unbeaten for 29 games. Spains chances
dissipated as Sergio Ramos missed a penalty
in the second half, and Gerard Pique was red
carded. Brazilian president Dilma Rousoff,
deemed it too dangerous to attend, as did
Pele, maybe scared off by the demonstrations
raging outside the newly renovated stadium.
The high octane performance by the South
Americans lays down a challenge for the rest
of the worlds footballing nations as the start
of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, begins in less
than a years time.

Great Soccer Month For The

United States
Jurgen Klinsmanns led the United States
national team through another busy month,
with a friendly, plus hosting the CONCACAF
Gold Cup games, that will result in the winner
playing in the FIFA Federations Cup in Russia,
2017. The Americans swamped Guatemala
in a friendly at San Diego, July 5, to the tune
of 6-0. Two minutes before the break the
avalanche to commenced, when Herculez
Gomes opened the scoring. Two by the
returning Landon Donovan, and singles from
Chris Wondolowski, Clarence Goodsen, and
Alejandro Bedoya added to the celebration.
At Portland, July 8, in their first Gold Cup
game, the US over-ran Belize (former British
Honduras) by 6-1. Chris Wondolowski fired off
a hat-trick, followed by nettings from Stuart
Holden, Michael Orozco, and a late penalty for
Landon Donovan, fourteen minutes from time.
They beat Cuba 4-1 at Sandy, Utah, after Jose
Cyprian had put the visitors in front. Donovan
hit an equalizer on the break, Joe Corona made
it two in the 57th minute, followed by a brace
by Chris Wondolowski. A Brek Shea goal
eight minutes from time at East Hartford, CT,
produced a 1-0 win over Costa Rica. At the
quarter-finals in Baltimore, July 21, another
goal feast saw the US beat El Salvador 5-1.
Courtesy of Clarence Goodson, Joe Corona,
Eddie Johnson, Landon Donovan scored his
54th international goal and Mix Diskerud got
the fifth.
The recent FIFA world ranking listings has
England ranked 15th, down from ten, the USA
at 22nd, Wales are 46th, Scotland 50th, and

Late European Soccer

The second legs of the Champions League,

second qualifying round, July 23-24, saw
Celtic move to the next round after goals by
Efe Ambrose and Georgios Samaras gave
them a 2-0 win at Parkhead, over Northern
Ireland champions Cliftonville. The Hoops
meet Swedish champion Elfsborg next round.
Welsh champion TNS could not undo their
1-3 deficit at Legia Warsaw, where the Poles
scored late for a 1-0 victory, claiming a 4-1
winning aggregate.
The second legs of the second qualifying
round of the Europa League Trophy,July 25,
witnessed Prestatyn Town, the last remaining
Welsh club in Europe, make its exit after a 3-0
home loss to Rijeka. Hibernian got trampled
7-0, at home by Malmo, and are out, while St
Johnstone tied 1-1 at home with Rosenberg,
that was enough to put them through. At Windsor Park, Linfields second leg went to extra
time and tragedy. Greek side FC Xanthi, held a
1-0 result at ninety minutes, that put the tie at
one apiece. Both sides scored in extra-time for
a 2-1 win for the Greeks, with the away goals
rules putting the visitors through.
The United States beat Honduras in the
semi-finals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup at
Arlington, Texas, July 24, where a double by
Landon Donovan and an early goal by Eddie
Johnson gave the US a 3-1 victory. The US

Manchester United and Chelsea indulged

a pre-season Asian tour, where new coach
David Moyes must have hoped for better
results. United skipper Nemanja Vidic was
injured and did not make the trip, while Wayne
Rooney took an early journey home after a
mishap during a training session in Thailand.
The Reds lost 1-0 to a Singha All-Stars XI in
Bangkok, but an 83,000 plus crowd gathered
in Sydney, where an Australian A League All
Stars side were beaten 5-1. Moyes first win
as manager was complimented by a brace
from Jesse Lingard and Danny Welbeck,
while Robin van Persie got the fifth. In Japan
against Yokohama F Marinos, United went
a goal down in the first minute, before Jesse
Lingard equalized around the 20th minute.
The Reds added to their number with an own
goal from the Japanese, but Yokohama scored
late for a 3-2 winChelsea started their tour
in Bangkok also, and beat the Singha AllStars with the only goal of the game. In Kuala
Lumpur, the blues beat a Malaysian XI 4-1, in
front of a 50,000 plus crowd mostly dressed
in blue. Against an Indonesian All-Stars XI in
Jakarta, the Blues swamped the locals 8-1.
AFC Bournemouth, recently promoted to the
Championship, hosted a capacity crowd for
a friendly with Real Madrid. The Spaniards
fielded a near full strength team and won 6-0.
Club officials and supporters were unconcerned about the result however, but tickled
pink they could get one of the top teams in
Europe to visit.

Sporting Passings
Bert Trautmann kept goal over 500 times
for Manchester City between 1948 and 1964.
A former prisoner of war who did not return
after World War II, he signed up for non-league
St Helens Town, before the sky blues brought
him aboard. His German heritage caused him
some difficult moments, but in the Citys
FA Cup win over Birmingham City in 1956,
where it was later discovered he played the
last twenty minutes with a broken neck; he
received national acclaim. He later went on to
coach Stockport County, and was awarded
the OBE for his outreach programmes with
young and amateur players. Trautmann was
living in Valencia, Spain at the time of his
passing and was 89-years-old.
When Phil Woosnam took over the Atlanta Chiefs in 1966, the Welshman brought
a plethora of soccer expertise to a continent
that was struggling for the birth of a brand new
sport. Woosnam played for some dozen clubs,
including Leyton Orient, West Ham Utd and
Aston Villa, and captured 17 caps for Wales.
Many thought it was a fools errand, but his
pioneering efforts are responsible for the
present state of the game in the US today. He
coached the US national side for a time, and
was a commissioner for the old North America
Soccer League,(NASL) serving between 19691983. His guidance saw the influx of major international stars including Pele, and his behind
the scenes momentum and experience aided
the United States in hosting the World Cup in
1994. He was inducted in to the US National
Soccer Hall of Fame in 1997. A cousin of the
golfer Ian Woosnam, he was retired, living in
Atlanta. Born in Caersws, Montgomeryshire,
Phil Woosnam was 80.

Brilliant Lions
Win The Series
Third Test:
Australia 16 British & Irish Lions 41
THE LIONS gave a magnificent display of attacking rugby in the final test of their Aussie
tour. In what should have been the tensest
game in an utterly tense series, with the first
two tests relying on a final kick, the Lions
shook off the shackles and posted a recordbreaking victory.
The first minute gave a clear indication of
what was to happen. Jonny Sexton kicked
off to Will Genia deep in the Wallaby 22.
Unaccountably, Genia fumbled the ball. The
ensuing scrum demonstrated the weakness
of the home scrum. Referee Roman Poite (a
northern hemisphere ref at last!) gave the
Lions a free-kick and two phases later, the
brilliant Alex Corbisiero dived a metre over
the line. Leigh Halfpenny converted and
the Lions were away.
It was the dream start which, with Halfpenny in infallible kicking mode, saw the
Lions ahead 19-3 as the half time whistle
approached. Then a series of Wallaby attacks
ended with James OConnor burrowing over
under the posts for a converted try. Minutes
after the break, the gap was further reduced
by two penalties from a Christian Lealiifano
finally allowed by his captain James Horwill
to take penalties and the Lions were suddenly
in danger.
Then gloriously facing repeated onslaughts in their own 22, Toby Faletau won

the ball back in front of his own posts and

send the play far upfield. In the purple passage that followed, the Lions scored three
thrilling tries, first from Sexton, next from
George North and best of all from Jamie
Roberts. Halfpenny missed one conversion
but finished the game with a Lions record
score of 21 points.
The last ten minutes were a formality. The
Lions had had enough, the home spectators
too deserted in droves and everywhere people
were congratulating each other on the first
Lions series win since 1997 in South Africa.
For Warren Gatland, the triumph of winning
a Lions series after so many years of disappointments was soured by the criticism he
faced for his team selection. After Sam Warburton was injured ahead of the decider, most
felt that Brian ODriscoll would be given the
captaincy and a final chance to taste series
victory at the end of a spectacular career.
There is no place for sentiment in the professional game: ODriscoll was dropped for
the first time in his life since Gatland felt his
career had already ended, and the captaincy
was handed to Alun Wyn Jones.
The man of the match was Alex Corbisiero,
reinstated by Gatland for the final Test. He
helped to ensure the crushing dominance
of the Lions scrum as well as scoring the
crucial opening try. Man of the series was the
smallest man on the field Leigh Halfpenny.
His kicking of penalties and out of hand
were simply superb, enabling him to garner
49 points in the series, another record. But
better than that was his open field running
where he made yards galore and laid on the
pass that put Sexton away for the critical
series-deciding try.
All eyes are now turned towards 2017
and the Lions in New Zealand. Whats the
betting that Warren Gatland will be running
that show as well? Robbie Deans, the Aussie coach, might be available he was fired
after the series following five years and 74
Tests in charge. On balance, Gatland looks
the likelier bet!

US Teams Beaten By
Brits At Henley Regatta
THE UNIVERSITY of Washington lost
by one length in last months final of the
Grand Challenge Cup for international
eights at the Henley Royal Regatta on the
River Thames.
The Great Britain national squad, racing as Leander and Molesey clubs, won in a
record time which at 5min 54sec was three
seconds faster than the previous mark.
The Grand Challenge Cup is the senior
event of the whole regatta, and the British
crew included three Olympic gold medalists from 2012, while the Washington crew
had gone through the season undefeated
till this point.
The British crew took an early lead
which it stretched to almost two lengths
by halfway. Washington then charged and
closed to within one length.
In the Ladies Plate - the second event
for international eights Northeastern
University A was caught on the line by
another British squad, going down by just
six feet, with the British crew eventually

forcing its way through from behind and

also setting a record time.
The only American win of the day
was already guaranteed, with Harvard
A facing Harvard B in the final of
the Visitors Cup for student and club
coxless fours.
Harvard A won by three lengths.

AT WIMBLEDON, June 24-July 7, after a wait

of some 77 years, Britain could finally boast
a mens singles Wimbledon Champion, after
Andy Murray outlasted Novak Djokovic 6-4,
7-5, 6-4. Britain came to a stop as millions
watched this historic duel on television and
a packed center court of 15,000 wallowed in
pure bliss as the Dunblane Scot edged closer
and closer to the anticipated victory. The pair
was meeting for the 18th time, with the Serb
having won eleven times, but Murray, last
years losing finalist, has matured in confidence and ability since he won his first Grand
Slam, the US Open last year. Djokovic was
coming off a record breaking four and three

British Wimbledon Champion since Fred Perry
back in 1936, and the first Scottish Wimbledon
champion since Harold Mahony in 1896.
On his way to glory and national acclaim, Andy

At the start of Wimbledon, the British

Giggs And Neville In Coaching

Roles At United

MANCHESTER United continued to rebuild

its coaching staff by appointing Ryan Giggs
as player-coach and Phil Neville as first-team
coach last month in moves to try to alleviate
the pressure on new boss David Moyes, being the successor to Sir Alex Ferguson after
his retirement.
The 39-year-old Giggs has spent his entire
career at United since making his debut in
1991 and his advice as the most decorated
player in British football history will be of
great help to Neville who ended his playing
career at Everton last season. The former
England fullback played for United from
1995 to 2005 and has recently worked with
England Under-21s.

Fulham Bought By Owner

Of NFLs Jaguars

A SPOKESMAN for Shad Khan says the Jacksonville Jaguars owner has bought English
Premier League club Fulham.
The sale comes with Khans Jaguars
preparing to play NFL regular-season games
in London.
The Jaguars have a deal to play one home
game in London for four consecutive seasons
starting in October at Wembley Stadium
against the San Francisco 49ers.
Khan becomes the sixth American owner
of a Premier League team.
Al Fayed had owned Fulham since 1997.

AEROFLOT has signed up as Manchester

Uniteds official airline in the first international
sports sponsorship deal for the Russian
state-controlled carrier.
Aeroflot is replacing Turkish Airlines deal
with the Premier League champions.
United managing director Richard Arnold
says the deal is the clubs first commercial
venture in Russia, an expanding market we
are keen to explore further.

CARLOS TEVEZ has been cleared to start the

season with Juventus after having his courtordered punishment rescinded in England.
The former Manchester City striker still
had to complete the majority of his 250
hours of unpaid community service that was
imposed after a string of driving offences
before leaving the Premier League club.
But the terms have been changed by Macclesfield Magistrates Court near Manchester,
with Tevez paying a fine now instead.

Ex-England Star Gascoigne

Charged With Three Offenses

PROSECUTORS says former England midfielder Paul Gascoigne has been charged
with two counts of common assault and
with being drunk and disorderly following an
incident at a railway station in June.
Gascoigne, who has battled alcoholism,
was arrested by British Transport Police at
Stevenage rail station on July 4.
He has been bailed to appear at a magistrates court on August 5.

Chris Froome (last years runner-up) appeared

eight and held on to it until the very end to
become the second consecutive Briton to win

England Go Two-Up In The Ashes

Series

By Rob Harris
USAIN BOLT sprinted to a second Diamond
League victory inside 24 hours in London
July 27 in what could be his last race in
England.
Exactly a year after the start of the
2012 Summer Games, Bolt anchored
a Jamaican relay team to victory at the
London leg of the Diamond League in the
Olympic Stadium.
The Racers Track Club finished the
4x100 race in 37.74 seconds, a day after
Bolts victory in the individual sprint in the
London stadium where he swept three gold
medals last year.
We havent run a lot of relays together,
but just being around each other we can
understand each other and know how fast
we are personally so it worked out very
well, Bolt said.
The 26-year-old Bolt led home teammates Mario Forsythe, Kemar Bailey-Cole
and Warren Weir ahead of France and
Canada.

Olympic Stadium which temporarily reopened to host the Diamond League meet
before closing again to be revamped into
a multi-sport stadium, which will be used
by Premier League team West Ham from
the 2016-17 season.
Bolt isnt happy, though, with the countrys tax laws.
He only returned to London to compete
because the British government agreed
to an amnesty that allowed international
athletes to compete tax-free at this meet
as they did at the Olympics. Taxes are
usually imposed on appearance fees and
prize money for nonresident athletes in all
sports when in action here.
A tax exemption is in place for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next year,
but Bolt is not committing to competing in
the Scottish city.
And the government does not appear
willing to waive its tax rules whenever it
suits Bolt.
