Of course, everyone has
a calculator these days; a
little, handheld device can
be purchased anywhere for
a little over a dollar, and
every smart phone comes
equipped with an app for
basic calculations.
But there are some more
complicated computations
that cant be done by most
hand held devices.
What if you need an
amortization schedule for
your mortgage and you
would like to know how
much interest you could
save if you just made one
extra payment a year?
Investigation of that sce-
nario could be worth thou-
sands of dollars over the
next twenty years.
Or what if you are curi-
ous about how much mon-
ey you should be saving for
your toddlers education.
Who knows what inflation
will be and what invest-
ment return can be
earned?
Then there are the BIG
long-term questions: how

T
he final concert of the
Estes Park Music
Festival on Monday
evening featuring the
Colorado Music Festival
Chamber Orchestra from
Boulder was another festive
event with a full house and a
programof seldomheard but
compelling music.
This concert was unusual
as both pieces used the same
orchestration: string orches-
tra plus a large percussion
battery. This made for a dif-
ferent and refreshing sonic
experience and one of great
color and variety.
Guest conductor Jean-Ma-
rie Zeitouni fromMontreal,
Canada is one of three guest
conductors this summer who
are being considered as the
next music director of the
Colorado Music Festival. He
chose a superb programthat
began with a popular compos-
er fromRussia, Rodion
Shchedrin, whose name is
largely unknown in the US.
Shchedrin, a major Soviet
composer and friend of Shos-
takovich, took as his starting
point the famous melodies
fromthe French opera Car-
men by Bizet and recom-
posed themin a stunning,
fresh and inventive way using
only strings and 37 percus-
sion instruments played by
four percussionists. This is
ballet music that was first per-
formed at the Bolshoi Theater
in Moscowin 1967.
The performance we expe-
rienced on Monday evening
was passionately conducted
by Zeitouni. The string sound
was rich, throaty and intense.
The familiar melodies with
Shchedrins ingenious turns
of phrase were captivating.
The use of the large percus-
sion section provided extra
drama as the percussion was
used largely as reinforcement
and for special effects. We
were expecting more melodic
use of the keyboard percus-
sion but that occurred only
once. The string section was
given most of the gorgeous
melodies and they played
their hearts out with a ferven-
cy and ardor that was grip-
ping to hear.
After intermission we
turned fromFrench/Russian
to American music with the
Serenade for Solo Violin and
Orchestra by the quintessen-
tial American composer,
Leonard Bernstein. Every
music loving American is
acquainted with Bernstein
who is best known for his
famous musical West Side
Story. However, Bernsteins
stated goal in life was to be
known as a composer of seri-
ous art music. To that end he
left a significant body of
music, lesser known, but of
outstanding quality. This Sere-
nade was written in mid 20th
century when most serious
composers were writing aton-
al music using the 12 tone
systemdeveloped by Schoen-
berg. Bernstein rejected this
musical language, firmly
believing that the future of
music was rooted in tonality.
He was right and perhaps that
is why his Serenade, while a
contemporary piece, is so
accessible to the listener.
This piece, so lovingly
played by violin soloist, Adele
Anthony, is based on a liter-
ary model: Platos Sympo-
sium. Its five movements are
musical interpretations of a
philosophical discourse on
the nature of love which were
presented by a series of state-
ments by guests at a banquet.
Each speaker addresses a dif-
ferent aspect of love which
Bernstein uses to provide the
formal and inspirational basis
of his Serenade.
Australian born violinist
Adele Anthony and the string
and percussion orchestra
gave a most sensitive,
nuanced and exhilarating per-
formance of this work. Princi-
pal cellist Gregory Sauer
played a beautiful duet with
the violin soloist late in the
work. The final movement
which began in serenity, clos-
es in a bacchanalia of jazzy
rhythms which left the audi-
ence, if a bit puzzled musical-
ly, admiring the brilliant exe-
cution of this difficult music
by soloist and orchestra.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife
Special to the Trail-Gazette
T
he pika, the cutest
and toughest little
critter in the Rock-
ies, appears to be
thriving throughout Colo-
rados high country.
While news stories have
circulated in the past few
years that pikas are disap-
pearing from the land-
scape, Colorado Parks and
Wildlife researchers have
found populations are well
distributed throughout Col-
orados mountains.
In their primary habitat,
mainly at and above tim-
berline where there is lots
of talus, we find pikas
almost everywhere we
look, explained Amy
Seglund, a species conser-
vation biologist for Parks
and Wildlife based in Mon-
trose.
Seglund conducted a
major research project to
determine the health of
pika populations in Colora-
do in 2008. Her field crew
surveyed 62 historical loca-
tions across the state to
determine the presence of
pikas. The animals were
found in more than 90 per-
cent of those sites. In the
spots where pikas were not
found the habitat was
unsuitable.
Since the original sur-
veys were completed, more
than 900 occupied sites
have been documented by
Colorado Parks and Wild-
life.
We were even finding
them in these little talus
areas and at lower eleva-
tions where I never
guessed pika would have
lived, she said.
Pikas are hardy critters
that weigh just four ounc-
es. They spend the warm
months gathering vegeta-
tion that will sustain them
through the winter. Pikas
do not hibernate. A 1990
study showed that the aver-
age weight of their hay-
stacks is 61 pounds; and
that in a 10-week time peri-
od one pika will make
14,000 foraging trips 25
per hour to secure its
food stash. Still not
impressed? Well, to sustain
all that work, they must fill
their bellies nine times a
day to keep up their energy
The news stories that
stoked concern about the
pika were based on a
research project in
Nevadas Great Basin in
2003 that stated that global
warming was the likely
cause of the extirpation of
some pika populations in
the Great Basin.
Temperatures through-
out the Mountain West cer-
tainly have been rising dur-
ing the last 50 years,
Seglund said. But the
mountains in the Great
Basin are much different
than Colorados: they are at
a lower altitude, provide
limited contiguous habitat,
receive less moisture and
hold warmer temperatures.
In Colorado theres more
available habitat, more
moisture, and the summer-
time temperatures are cool
enough for pika to thrive.
The vast majority of the
available habitat for pika in
Colorado is on high-eleva-
tion public land that is not
heavily impacted by roads,
grazing and other human
activity. With few human
activities nearby, pika habi-
tat wont be subject to frag-
mentation which disturbs
natural connections
between populations.
In the summary of her
study, published in 2010,
Seglund wrote: Though
the climate may be chang-
ing in the Southern Rocky
Mountains, it currently
appears that climate condi-
tions in the state fall into
the realm of temperature
and precipitation cycles
appropriate for maintaining
healthy pika populations
and distribution.
Partly based on
Seglunds research, the
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Ser-
vice decided not to list the
pika under the Endangered
Species Act.
Colorado Parks and
Wildlife continues ongoing
monitoring of pika popula-
tions and their habitats at
30 established sites around
the state.
The suggestion that
pika were in trouble in the
West is what spurred our
research, Seglund said.
This was a very important
study that helped us estab-
lish a clear picture of the
current state of pika popu-
lations. Global warming
will present challenges for
many animal species, but
our study shows that Colo-
rados pika populations, for
now, are in good shape.
For more information
about Colorados wildlife
species, see:

G
osh, its nice to
have rain inter-
spersed with sun-
ny days. The grass
is better than Ive seen it in
the fourteen years Ive been
here.
The horses gratefully
enjoy getting to graze on
green growing grass. They
could even be graciously
grunting with delight as they
grip their grinders on grit
free, top grade gouts of gor-
geous seed grains atop fresh
greenery in the grandeur of
Estes Park, rather than sim-
ply eating hay in the barn.
We rode them to the
house a couple of days ago
and let them mow the lawn.
The fertilizer they left
behind is a bonus.
We were lucky enough to
see a small herd of cows and
their calves. Its nice to be
able to just watch them for
awhile. Ive spent a lot of
days tracking, chasing and
following elk while hunting
or guiding hunters. The
wilder cousins of the elk
we have around here seldom
let you stay close long
enough to just watch. As a
guide and a ranch hand, I
got to observe them more
than most of the general
public, as I was horseback a
lot, and the wilder elk dont
seem to be as suspicious of
you if youre horseback.
It also seems that the
moose are enjoying our little
haven. Ive seen more moose
and have heard of more
moose sightings than in pre-
vious years. Last Thursday,
while entertaining at Coffee
on The Rocks, the crew,
guests and I could see a bull
moose, two or three cows,
and four mule deer bucks.
Ive seen deer and elk in one
sighting, but had never seen
all three of the deer family at
one place before. The bull
moose came in to sight trav-
eling with the cow elk, and
they stayed together for
quite some time, so we were
able to watch them at the
same time and didnt have to
move our feet. The deer
were across the road, so we
only had to turn our heads to
see them.
There are more humming-
birds around than in recent
years, too. At least it appears
that way here on Fish Creek.
Weve seen dozens around
one of the feeders and nearly
as many at the other one.
They are a feisty bunch.
Catherine and I cant figure
out if the eat to fight, or fight
to eat. Either way, they are
fun to watch. The other day I
actually saw one just sitting.
Not flying or eating, just sit-
ting. However, even with my
camera at hand, I was too
slow to get a picture of it.
Ive tried to pick out one and
follow it exclusively, but I
generally lose sight of it
within a very short time,
probably less than a minute.
It just about makes you dizzy
to watch one in flight.
The next day I got a pic-
ture of the bull moose at
Coffee On The Rocks. A full
grown Shiras bull moose can
weigh up to 1,400 lbs. A
hummingbird, about an
eighth of an ounce. Wow,
what a difference in size.
And all here in our back-
yards.

how much should I save
today to be sure I have

If youre close to retire-
ment, you may be asking.
Whats the best time to
claim social security bene-
fits? If youre already in
retirement, you may want
to determine what you can
spend from your hard-
earned nest egg and not
run out of money.
Because the calculations
listed above are rather
complex (and somewhat
speculative), in the past
most people have ignored
their importance. The
what-ifs of the future and
the complexity of the math
usually blocked the pro-
cess, and the resulting
inertia meant most people
did nothing.
Thanks to the Internet,
answers to all these ques-
tions are quickly available
using online calculators. Of
course, the answers will
just be estimates, but the
estimates (and the chang-

the way to action which can
make goals and dreams
come true.
Its a proven fact (of
course theres been a

ing in the Adult Summer
Reading Program who have
completed all nine squares
in their reading logs are
invited to contact Kurtis
Kelly or Cheryl Homan-
Wendell at the library to
RSVP for a picnic thank
you before that evenings
movie.
The library and the Town
of Estes Park thank Fami-
lies for Estes for their con-
tinued support of outdoor
films as a family-positive
activity for locals and
guests alike. Licensing for
the film has been made
possible by a grant from
the Friends of the Library.
For more information,
contact the library at (970)

after its 1982 release. Its
heartwarming story had an
almost universally joyful
and moving effect on audi-
ences worldwide.
Local readers participat-
could have imagined.
E.T. has become a mod-
ern classic in the film
world, carving out a central
place and identity in popu-
lar culture immediately
Attendees are invited to
bring blankets and comfort-
able chairs for the outdoor
event.
The movie E.T.: The
Extra-Terrestrial tells the
tale of a 10-year-old boy,
Elliott (played by Henry
Thomas), who befriends a
little, lost alien. Elliott
names the alien E.T. and
does his best to hide him
from adults.
As Elliot attempts to help
his extra-terrestrial com-
panion contact his home
planet so that he might be
rescued, the children must
elude scientists and govern-
ment agents determined to
apprehend the alien for
their own purposes, which
results in an adventure
greater than any of them
