HV/LV Motors Operations and Maintenance
Training

Course goal
The aim of this training is to provide in-depth
knowledge of various aspects of HV and LV Motors.
It will range from basic principles of operation to
selection and performance related issues. It
thoroughly introduces the concept of how to maintain
a motor effectively and ensure reliability of the motor
at all times.
Learning objectives
Upon completion of this course, students will be able
to:
understand the detail concepts of motor theory,
selection and construction
appreciate the optimum operation of motors,
performance characteristics, stresses on motors
and starting methods of motors
understand the critical maintenance practices of
motors including installation, commissioning,
overhauling and condition monitoring

Personnel from industries having at least 1 year of
on-site experience

Refresh the engineering fundamentals of motor
Introduce the driven load to outline main categories of
motor applications and the basis for selection / sizing /
specification
Outline the range of types of electric motors
Explain in detail the components of motor, the
engineering functions and the variety in construction
and specifications
Explosion Proof Motors are discussed in the Oil, Gas
and Petrochemical context
Explain what is required for proper and reliable motor
operation
Explain the pros and cons of various alternatives in
motor starting methods through examples and case
studies
Explain key considerations in the selection of
alternatives through examples
Highlight the importance of good planning and
workmanship in execution of activities, to avoid infant
mortality failures
Discuss the pros and cons of overhauling & repairing

Day 3
Promote technical safety aspects of motor operations
Promote capability to select protective devices based
on the understanding of the characteristics of the device
Develop the ability to diagnose faults through
observation of symptoms exhibited by protective
devices and the motor itself
Discuss the stresses affecting a motor as the basis for
RCFA
Re-introduce RCFA as the methodology to investigate
and act upon motor failures
Highlight the importance of acquiring and retaining
knowledge base in failure analysis to prevent repeated
motor failures
