Another Great Show!
On the lovely day of Sunday 3rd
August, Lis and I drove over to
visit the Smallholders Show at
Sheringham Park.
An event that we have already
enjoyed for the last couple of
years on the trott.
The livestock all appear to be in
excellent good condition and the
events featuring so many dogs
and their owners are always a
delight to watch.
The sight of the working horses in the ring is
something very special. (See Top picture)

Yes it is Cromer Carnival time yet
again which, whatever the weather,
is an event enjoyed by everyone
whether they are helping to pull it
all off or as a jolly spectator.
It is also that time of year when
the roads & streets start to fll up
with visitors, locals & their cars
(all looking to park somewhere)
while they come to take part in
all the numerous events that are
part of the Cromer Carnival.
This year in its 45th year.
The Carnival can and does still
pull in hundreds of visitors to
Cromer every year.
As always I will be out & about
snapping away at people having
fun and taking part.
I take my hat off to all those who
organise all the events that make
the Carnival weeks so much fun
for everyone, particularly people
like Tony Shipp & Dave Roberts
(aka Hubba) who, along with so
many others do so much to make
these events so very popular and
great fun for everyone involved.
I would also like to thank all of
those who are involved with the
Carnival Royal Party, who are
asked to do so much over the
Carnival Week plus numerous
other times during the year
and do it all so brightly.
Whatever you do during this 45th
Carnival do please read the rules
published in the Carnival Guide,
along with full details,which can
be picked up almost everywhere
in Cromer.
We have basic listings of all the
Carnival Events in this issue
along with our photos from
previous Carnivals.
Perhaps you can spot yourself
somewhere on Pages 10 -14.
Most of the photographs were
taken by me but the photos of
the Red Arrows were taken by
Paul Damen.
Thank you Paul.
Enjoy Your Crab Tales

Dear Editor,
I have been laughing all morning at your
unanswered question: ........why was this
ever called the Great War? With so many
good folks being killed for our freedom.
What has always puzzled me about the so-
called Great War are those newsreels from
the period showing the doomed troops
frantically waving their hankies from
trains and smiling excitedly at
the cameras.
It just somehow didnt occur to people at
the time, least of all the soldiers, that
anyone would end up getting killed,
despite the fact that the event had
been plainly billed as a war.
Yours,
Philip Graham
Cromer.
Dear Philip,
Thank you so much for covering our fnal Keep
Fit evening in the Church Rooms, Mundesley
(Crab Tales issue 042).
Could I take another advantage of the Crab
Tales space to thank all the ladies once again
for the lovely fowers and very generous gift
they presented to me. I was surprised
and touched.
Dear Philip,
Can I on behalf of the Nth Norfolk Minni House
Club say thank you for your write up in Crab
Tales issue 038, regarding our exhibit in the
Annual VEO Art and Craft Exhibition.
It is really rewarding when people take the
trouble to praise us & appreciate our hobby.
The aim of our club is to encourage and help
with an interest in mimiature work. We meet
on the 2nd Thursday of the month (except
August) at Bodham Village Hall
from 2pm - 4pm.
If any of your readers would like further
information, they could phone our Club
Secretary, Jan Boyden on 01263 826 970.
Once again many thanks for your support.
Kind regards,
Janet Amiss.

I have really enjoyed taking the class and
hope they will all continue to keep at it.
Mundesley is well supplied with keep ft
opportunities at the moment with Gill
and her Extend class and Donna with
aerobics, yoga, pilates and zumba!
all held in the Church Rooms.
A small correction Philip, Annamarie (see
Crabline article Jan18 2014) is not taking
over my class but starting a completely
new Fitness League group in the
Coronation Hall in September.
These three ladies mentioned above who are
instructing these classes are all professional
people, trained in helping all of us to reach
our highest potential, whatever age or
standard we start at.
Hazel and I, taking the previous Ladies Keep
Fit, had lots of fun but were just enthusiastic
amateurs prepared to give it a go.
Thanks for the space Philip

Thank you for making these corrections Pam.
We have been sent an article by Annamarie
with all the details about her Fitness League
Classes which is in this issue on Page 19.
Dear Philip,
Speaking as a regular summer visitor to Cromer
for the last thirty years or so, I was surprised
(and disappointed) at the deserted nature of
North Lodge Park when we were in North
Norfolk a couple of weeks ago.
No bowls nor putting and also the caf
was closed.
We have played on the putting green many
times and it was always pleasant, when the
sun was shining, to sit next to the boating
lake and enjoy a cup of tea from the caf,
particularly as the gardens are sheltered
from any breeze that blows off the sea.
I understand that the current situation is due to
the on-going transfer of responsibility for North
Lodge Park from North Norfolk District
Council to Crower Town Council.
Surely it would have been possible for
arrangements to have been put in place
so that the facilities in the park that
holidaymakers expect could still
have been available for 2014?
I hope that this is not a foretaste of
what is to come in the future.
Regards,
Robin Ensor

Dear Mr. Keddell,
I am a big fan of the Crab Tales, especially the
poems and I thought you might like to print
this poem that I have written.
Yours and God Bless
Ada Shorley.
Words From A Loving Wife
My husbands such a handsome chap,
Im, proud to be his wife.
He has the kind of friendly face
Youd look at all your life.
I dont see the too-big nose,
All I see is his smile,
And twinkling, sparkling eyes as blue
As a beautiful Dutch Delft tile.
My husband goes everywhere with me,
He hates to leave my side.
Whether shops, or library, or Cromer beach
To contemplate the tide.
Its been that way for ffty years,
And through time, folk have noted
How close we are, my hubby and me -
We could not be more devoted.
Through thick and thin, weve been best pals
And stood shoulder to shoulder.
And though youths passion eventually fades,
Our love hasnt dimmed just because we are older.
And yes, were still inseparable,
Hell always be in mty pocket.
You see, he died ten years ago -
I keep his photograph in a locket.

Dear Editor,
The campaign to build a skate park in Cromer
continues to make progress towards its aims.
Almost 140,000 has been received or pledged,
leaving only a little over 10,000 to fnd and
the campaign is working hard to ensure that
construction can begin later this year.
Cromer lacks a top class facility for its young
people, the skate park promises to be a huge
asset and will make Cromer a more attractive
destination for those in search of holidays
with something to offer to everyone.
In recent weeks, the momentum has been
maintained by support from many very
different sources.
Norfolk Homes generously contributed 1,000
to the cause, taking advantage of the campaigns
new Just Giving facility to donate online.
The process is simple and straightforward,
available to all for any size of donation.
To make a contribution via Just Giving please
visit: www.justgiving.com/cromerskatepark/
Local singers The Castaways have raised an
impressive 500 for the campaign and in July
Adam Spruce, Ieuan Lightfoot & Nyall Brown
gratefully accepted the cheque from members
of Castaways during their regular rehearsal in
Trimingham (Photo above by Jean Spruce)
North Norfolk Radio, via its Kids Trust charity,
has generously pledged the fnal 1,000 of the
overall 150,000 campaign target.
The ingenuity of those supporting the cause knows
no limits. Simply by encouraging members to
donate their loose change at recent meetings,
Cromer Womens Institute has raised 53.50.
Both the Albion and the Kings Head pubs plan
to organise fundraising events in the near future,
and the Wellington will be putting a collection
bucket on their bar.
As always, the committee would like to express
its heartfelt thanks to all those individuals and
organisations who support the campaign.

Their Village Fete was offcially opened
on Saturday 2nd August by the magical
Roy Davenport and the day kicked off
with Roy giving his usual bright routines
of magic (Above & Below right)
Some of the delights included Traditional
games such as Whack the Rat, Bowling
for the Pig as well as a Coconut Shy.
As well as Roys magic there was an array of
the wonderful owls & birds of prey from
Fens Falconry giving a great display.
Sadly neither Lis nor I could get there on the
day so I would like to take the opportunity
to thank very much Eduardo Garcia for
sending us these photos.
By all accounts it was a great day and
thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.

This was the Norfolk Smallholders eighth
Annual Show at Sheringham Park and had
everything to do with smallholding, self
suffciency and traditional crafts.
Alongside the numerous stands with home
produced Norfolk food and goods, there
were exhibitions, demonstrations, sheep
shearing and a Birds of Prey display.
The fun dog show was really popular with
all kinds of games for all types of dogs and
the livestock included everything
from Lamas to Chickens.
There was a members poultry exhibition,
where we voted for our favourite chicken
but we couldnt work out why this lonely
duck was amongst them!
With a large crowd of people of all ages
enjoying themselves, we had a lunch of
delicious Burgers, fnished off with ice
cream, while we listened to some very
good local musicians.
The variety of lunches available are always
very tasty and worth getting as soon as you
arrive and like the vast majority, we came
away with a number of delights to fll the
tummies a few times over.
I would recommended our readers to watch
out for the dates of next years show in
the Crab Tales.

My Missus........
..........bought a paperback last Saturday,
so I looked inside the bag, twas
"Fifty Shades of Grey"
Well I just left her to it and went off up to bed.
An hour later, she appeared, Oh the sight
flled me with dread!
In her hand she held a rope, the other,
held a whip!
She brandished them around a bit and then
began to strip.
Well 40 years or so, ago, I might have
had a peek
But Doris hasnt weathered well,
shes 68 next week.
Watching Doris bump and grind couldnt
be much grimmer
And things progressed from bad to worse,
she toppled off her Zimmer !
She struggled back up to her feet, a good
half hour later, put her teeth back in and
said that I must dominate her !!!
Now if you knew our Doris, see, youd know
just why I cringed.
Id been two months in traction, cos my
hips and knees unhinged.
She stood there nude. All naked, like,
bent forward quite a bit.
and jumping back in fright, I went and
stood on her left tit.
Doris screamed, her teeth shot out,
my word. What HAD I done ?
She moaned and groaned then shouted out
"Step on the OTHER one !!!"
Well reader, I can tell no more about
what occurred that day.
Suffce to say, my dark brown hair,
turned ffty shades of grey.
Black and blue, battered too, with
wanton, wild perversion,
We decided that a night of sin was
scarce worth such exertion.
Thank Heavens she has binned the book
and peace reigns, like before.
Shes head to toe in winceyette and
back to back, we snore...
Thanks to David Thorne for this.

Above: Enjoying the Buffet, which was served
by some of the cast during the interval.
On left : The Cast, far
too many of them to
name individually.
On Right:
Micky Peters &
Tracey Loftus,
helping in the
kitchen during
the interval.
What Can You Say?
Other than a brilliant night
out in Mundesley.
On Tuesday July 29th, along with Judy Peters
from Trimingham, while her husband Micky
was on the drums, Lis, her daughter Lucie
and I went along to the opening night of
A Taste Of The Musicals, presented
by the Mundesley Players in
the Coronation Hall.
The show was directed and arranged by Tracey
Loftus with her husband Tony as the compare
of the show and her son Anthony leading
many of the popular songs.
In simple terms every one of the cast of over
30 souls pulled off a truly brilliant night out,
which, I understand, played to full houses
from the Opening night until August 2nd.
During the interval, we were treated to a buffet
supper as well as another break for the raffe,
please note: I did not win any prizes despite
hoping that I would, as our Janet Munro
was the raffe organiser.
The show which has been rehearsing since
around Easter this year, was brilliantly put
together and everyone I spoke to, on that
evening and later during the week, agreed
that it was a really excellent show.
Knapton Heritage
Weekend
On August 2nd, I drove over just before lunch
and enjoyed walking around Knapton and
taking everything in.
There may not be a shop in this community, but
the time and energy given by so many made for
a great couple of hours in the village.
Harry Richardson was on hand to sell the maps
of the village and offer advice to visitors.
First off to where the tractors were parked up,
that ranged from the large 4x4 machines right
down to the little grey Fergs. Having driven
such large 4 x 4 s in Australia years ago now,
I have to admire the little Fergs more than
any other make and model.
After checking out a number of Garage Sales
for bargains, I moved on to the Church and
was impressed by the many displays which
covered the 100 years since the outbreak
of the First World War.
It is so easy to forget just how many
of the local folks lost their lives in
this war and the display of fowers
remembering those who had lost a
father in this war did remind me
of just how many there were.
Manning a wonderful exhibition
in the church was John Needham
who suggested, when I asked him
recently why it was referred to as
the Great War, that it was because
of the sheer size of the war itself
& the numbers of those lost in it.
That age old question always
comes up in ones mind.
What have we learnt from
this bit of history
I fear the answer is not a lot.
Even though I could only spend a
short time in the village, I found
that the Heritage Weekend was
a really fascinating event.
PK
You could not fail to notice the score card (Below)
Although all the singers / dancers were very
impressive, one particular singer who really
pulled off her performance on the evening
was Victoria Ing aged 14. She has a really
natural talent on the stage. (Pictured in
the centre of the picture of the cast)
It really is a case of Watch This Space
for details of any future presentations
by this truly wonderful group of
professional amateurs.

During that time we have seen the Carnival grow
from a small event held on the promenade to
being one of the top carnivals in the country.
A highlight of Carnival Day is the display by the
Red Arrows and I am delighted to welcome them
back to give their 50th Anniversary display.
Our arena events will include the Bolddog Lings
Motorcycle Stunt Display Team and once again
The Romford Drum & Trumpet Corps will be
marching in the parade and this year they will
also be giving our Tuesday evening concert
in the Parish Church.
The Cromer Carnival is a time for residents and
visitors to have fun & enjoy themselves so please
give generously to the bucket collectors as it is
your donations which enable us to continue
such a high level of entertainment.
As always a huge thank you to all those who are
involved in the organisation and running of this
event. It wouldnt be possible without you.
With Best Wishes for a wonderful week.

A Book of People Poetry
This book of poetry was lent to me recently
by the Mundesley author Tricia Sturgeon
and is a real delight to read and enjoy.
In the recent past she has written for the
My Weekly magazine as well as having
work published in the Daily Mail.
Tricia has also appeared on BBC Radio
Norfolk several times to read her poetry.
All the royalties received by Tricia
will go to animal charities.
This is just one example of her poems:
Hide and Seek
Everything is growing legs
And playing hide and seek.
It seems to happen every day
And week on bloomin week .
The purse which I had right to hand
Has upped and done a bunk,
So plans for retail therapy
Are well and truly sunk.
Ive got my coat and scarf and gloves,
But now its Hunt the Hat.
(And wheres that tin of Superchunks
Id opened for the cat?)
Im sure I would be better off
Residing in a cave,
For guess whos found the scrubbing brush
Tucked in the microwave?
Not long ago, my pooch and I
Went out to have a jog.
Now heres the lead safe in my hand
But where on earths the dog?
But hey, there is a brighter side.
I fnd no cause to grouse.
For all this running up the stairs
And round and round the house.
Is but a blessing in disguise
(I do not jest or jape).
For though the memorys caput,
The rest of mes in shape!
Cockleshells is published by Vanguard Press

Thanks Tricia for lending me your book,
it was such a good read and I wish you
all the very best for raising funds for

A Scotsman......
.....walks into the Bank of England in London
& asks for the manager. He tells the manager
that he is going to Australia on business for
two weeks and needs to borrow 5,000.
The manager tells him that the bank will need
some form of security for the loan, so Hamish
hands over the keys & documents of the new
Ferrari parked on the street in front of the bank.
He produces the Log Book and everything
checks out. The manager agrees to accept
the car as collateral for the loan.
The banks General Manager and its offcers
all enjoy a good laugh at the rough looking
Scotsman for using a 120,000 Ferrari as
collateral against a 5000 loan.
A bank employee then drives the car into the
banks underground garage and parks it there.
Two weeks later, Hamish returns, repays
the 5,000 and the interest, which comes
to 15.41.
The manager says:
Sir, we are very happy to have had your
business,and this transaction has worked
out very nicely, but we are a little puzzled.
While you were away, we checked you out
and found that you are a multimillionaire.
What puzzles us is, why would you
bother to borrow 5,000?
Hamish replies:
Where else in London can I park my car
for two weeks for only 15.41 and expect
it to be there when I return?
Ah, the mind of the Scotsman.

For me the highlight of the show was when
Paul careered around the arena on the back
of an imaginary motorbike being driven
by the clown. All in all it was a great
performance.
PK
The Editor would like to thank Paul Damen
for most of these photographs.
New One Off
Ring Master
On Tuesday August 5th, Nigel Holmes
of Mundesley took on the role of being
the Circus Ferrels ringmaster for one
performance only.
Along with friends and family we turned out
to support Nigel and this great little circus, in
their wonderful tent which has been coming
to Gold Park in Mundesley every August
for many years.
As always it is indeed a great show of fun and
games with help from the audience and was
enjoyed by all the kids and grown-ups who
turned up to support this event.
Nigel certainly did us all proud, and whether
the circus has offered him as full time job, I
have yet to know.
He did indeed ft the role, if not the hat, well
and along with all the other performers
pulled off a great show.
Below: Audience Participation.
We sat next to Paul & Christine Damen who
were sporting masks of Prince Charles and
Camilla, were made from photographs that
Paul had taken the day before when they
visited Sandingham and then turned
them into great masks.
Passport Letter
This, apparently is an actual letter received by
the UK Passport Offce.
Dear Sirs,
Im in the process of renewing my passport, and
still cannot believe how is it that Sky Television
has my address & telephone number and knows
that I bought a blinking satellite dish from them
back in 1988, and yet, the Government is still
asking me where I was born and on what date.
For Christ sakes, do you guys do this by hand?
* My birth date you have on my pension book.
* Its on all the income tax forms Ive fled for
the past 30 years.
* It is on my National Health card.
* My driving license.
* My car insurance.
* On the last eight damn passports Ive had.
* Its on all those stupid customs declaration
forms Ive had to fll out before being
allowed off the plane for the last 30 yrs.
* All those insufferable census forms.
* Would somebody please take note, once
and for all, that my mothers name is Mary
Anne, my fathers name is Robert and Id
be absolutely astounded if that WOULD
ever change between now and when I die!
I apologise, Im really pissed off this morning.
Between you and me, Ive had enough
of this bulls**t!
You send the application to my house, then you
ask me for my address!
What is going on? Do you have a gang of
Neanderthals working there?
Look at my damn picture.
Do I look like Bin Laden?
I dont want to dig up Yasser Arafat, for
goodness sake.
I just want to go and park my bum on some
sandy beach somewhere.
And would someone please tell me, why would
you give a damn whether I plan on visiting a
farm in the next 15 days?
If I ever got the urge to do something weird to
a chicken or a goat, believe you me, youd be
the last people I would want to tell!
Well, I have to go now, because I have to go to
the other end of the poxy city to get another
blinking copy of my birth certifcate, to the
tune of thirty quid.
Would it be so complicated to have all the
services in the same spot to assist in the
issuance of a new passport the same day?
Nooooooooooooo, that would be too damn
easy and maybe make sense.
Youd rather have us running all over the place
like chickens with our heads cut off.
Then WE have to fnd some idiot to confrm
that its really me on the damn picture - you
know, the one where were not allowed to
smile?! (bureaucratic morons)
Hey, do you know why we couldnt smile
even if we wanted to?
Because were totally pissed off!
Signed
An Irate Citizen.
P.S. Remember what I said above about the
picture and getting someone to confrm
that it is really me?
Well, my family has been in this country
since 1776.
I have served in the military for something
over thirty years and have had full security
clearances over twenty fve of those years
enabling me to undertake highly secretive
missions all over the world.
............. However, I have to get someone
important to verify who I am.
You know, someone like my doctor, who
was born and raised in Pakistan.
Sincerely....
Thanks to David Thorne for this

Diabetes
Mellitus
Diabetes is a disease which everyone is
becoming more aware of, both doctors
and patients.
In simple terms it is a disease where the
body cannot deal with sugar appropriately.
The result of this is that sugar fnds itself
in our bodies where it should not be and
where it will cause damage.
The most common place it ends up is on the
inside of our blood vessels and does the same
to our blood vessels that limescale does to
pipes when it builds up.
This can lead to an increased amount of heart
attacks, strokes and kidney disease occurring
in patients that have diabetes.
There are two types of diabetes.
The most common type is the one that comes
on later in age and generally is a refection
of wear and tear in the pancreas and an
unhealthy lifestyle.
The pancreas is the organ which releases
insulin into the blood stream so that sugar
from our diet can be dealt with.
A healthy lifestyle allows our body to use the
insulin released from the pancreas appropriately.
The unhealthier we are the less likely our
bodies are to use insulin appropriately.
The other type of diabetes tends to come on
earlier in life and is usually due to the fact
the pancreas just cannot make insulin.
This type of diabetes leads to the need for
insulin injections from the start of that
persons diabetic diagnosis.
Diabetes is diagnosed by symptoms
and investigations carried out by
health professionals.
The classic symptoms that patients present
with when they are very diabetic are being
very thirsty, producing a lot of urine and
also being very tired.
This is because the excess sugar in the blood
causes the kidneys to lose extra water.
However the majority of the time patients do
not have any symptoms and their diabetes is
picked up by a random blood test.
The most common blood test that is used now
to diagnose diabetes is the HbA1c blood test.
This is a very accurate blood test showing
how sugary the blood has been over the
previous couple of months before the
blood test was taken.
If patients have a level consistently above
48 then they are classed as being diabetic.
Recently doctors have been able to diagnose
a condition called prediabetes when patients
have a HbA1c level between 42-48.
This condition suggests that if a patient does
not change their lifestyle they may develop
diabetes in the future.
The mainstay of treating diabetes is lifestyle
change, medications that lower blood sugars
& insulin to replace the low levels of insulin
in diabetic patients.
In the frst 3 to 6 months after a diabetes
diagnosis it is crucial to make changes
in your lifestyle to become healthier.
These changes include not smoking, drinking
the right amount of alcohol, regular exercise
and a healthy diet.
This in itself can sometimes treat diabetes
but often patients have to go on tablets or
insulin injections.
There are a vast amount of these and explain-
ing each one of them is beyond the scope of
this article but my advice would be that if you
are diabetic make sure you attend your GP
surgery when asked for reviews and please
remember to be compliant with your diabetic
medications prescribed as this will lead to
better control and less diabetic
complications in the future.

Fitness League
Mother of four Annamarie Sterne is very
excited to be starting new Fitness League
classes in our local area.
She held a launch at Sheringham Community
Centre to help spread the news of the benefts
a Fitness League classes and Norman Lamb
came along to enjoy the demonstration given
by Annamaries current ladies who are aged
between 38 & 82 and attend both the Cromer
and Sheringham class.
They showed not only the quality of exercise
but also the importance of friendships and
support they get from the weekly classes.
One of Annamaries members said:
As an older member of the class, I want to
stay active & healthy. Having a fully qualifed
teacher is the answer. I have increased my
stamina, feel more fexible & made friends
The classes combine movement with a strong
central core & body strengthening exercises
which focus on developing good posture and
correct body alignment, and lengthening and
strengthening muscle groups to encourage
full range of movement.
You then become more body aware, and feel
taller, stronger & more mobile. Classes are
suitable for participants of all abilities, ages
& shapes, and are taught to music in a fun
and friendly environment. No previous
dance or exercise experience is needed.
The League was founded by Mary Bagot
Stack in 1930 as The Womens League of
Health and Beauty. She created a method
which was part exercise, part dance which
would energise and strengthen the whole
body and mind.
Mary was an inspirational woman of her time
and dreamed of creating an organisation a
League - for women, which would have the
aim of health for everyone, so that every
life could be lived to the full.
Over the years, many ftness fads have come
and gone but none have the same longevity.
The organisation has evolved over the years
and changed its name to Fitness League.
Some things however remain the same.
The Bagot Stack Principles, are based
on the structure of the human body
which never changes.
Of course, nowadays many other forms of
exercise are available and women have so
many more lifestyle choices.
The difference with Fitness League is that it
is about learning to use our bodies better and
become the best version of ourselves that we
can be, rather than aiming for a quick fx or
an unrealistic ideal.
They are classes for real women in todays
world, just as they always have been.
Annamaries classes already run in Cromer
& Sheringham on a Friday morning and she
has new classes starting from September in
Mundesley, Aylsham on Thursday mornings
and Fakenham on a Wednesday morning.
For further details or to book a place on any
of these days please phone Annamarie on:
01263 511 169 or 07989 285 599
Quote from Norman Lamb MP:
It was great fun taking part and clear that
everyone was enjoying themselves at the
same time as keeping ft. This is brilliant
I hope it grows and grows.

Cantamus Sings...
......Thank You
Thank you, thank you, thank you to Waitrose in
Nth Walsham for their generous donation and to
all their customers who chose our community
choir and voted with their green disc.
We plan to use the donation of 290 to purchase
moveable lighting when we perform in the
local churches.
Our next performance will be our Christmas
concert on December 6th.
The programme of French and English music
promises to be a festive affair including pieces
by Marc-Antoine Charpentier, who is famous
for writing the theme music used for the
Eurovision Song Contest.
As well as a selection of Christmas Carols
ranging from traditional works such as John
Taverners The Lamb and arrangements by
John Rutter, to arrangements of Frosty the
Snowman, we have a new carol written by
our musical director David Ballard.
The Cantamus Choir will begin rehearsing for
the Christmas concert on Thursday September
4th at 7.30pm in Southrepps Church.
We are a very friendly choir prone to exercising
our vocal chords in laughter as much as song.
If you love singing do come and join us.
No auditions are required.
Our singers are of mixed ability, some of them
are extremely experienced while others only
experience is in the shower.
With our strong community spirit, you will be
surprised how soon you become part of the team,
looking forward to the Thursday rehearsals.
As our members come from Sheringham to
Stalham; Mundesley to Aysham if transport
is a problem a lift share may be possible.
For more information please contact
David Ballard on: 07785 782 498.
We look forward to singing with you.

Northrepps
Poppyland Branch
Of The Royal British Legion.
On Sunday 3rd August, we welcomed everyone
to join us at St Marys Church, Northrepps, for
our World War One Commemoration Service
and Exhibition.
It was an honour for us to have the deputy Lord
Lieutenant for Norfolk Mr. Richard Butler MBE
(Above on Left) and his guest, Cllr.Wyndham
Northam, to be with us and Cllr. Hilary Cox
joined us later in the day.
Jackdaniel, the local young singer/songwriter
performed a song he was inspired to write
about war and confict, when studying the
history of World War 1.
Isla, Josh, Tabitha and Denny, pupils from the
Northrepps Primary School Oak Class, recited
poetry they had written and Julie Armstrong
Ingram, from Northrepps, wrote a trilogy of
poems, and the one chosen to be read by
Dr. Joe Gaston, was The Memorial.
The focus of our Exhibition was to honour the
fallen, named on our War Memorial, and their
individual resting places. Regiment information
was on display together with various photos &
memorabilia that their families have had handed
down to them.
John Needham, Chairman of Cromer Branch &
well known local Military Collector, brought
along his World War 1 collection, including
an iconic 1917 Vickers heavy machine gun.
Northrepps Primary School children also
exhibited all their art work.
Although we are only a very small Branch, our
members have received a great deal of support
from residents, Northrepps Primary School and
people outside the village, from different parts
of the country, who have donated not only their
time, but plants for the War Memorial, a tribute
in the churchyard, display equipment, extracts
from old Parish Magazines 1914-1918, bell
ringers, fower lady, overspill car park signs
and car park attending.
The ladies who donated & served refreshments,
the printing & delivery of our leafets, Cliff for
the photos, Janet Payne & Rev. Pat Hopkins for
a very moving service all combined to remember
with honour, those brave young men who left
their families, friends, work and our village,
never to return.
It was very uplifting to have the very young
and elderly united on the eve of the outbreak
of the war that changed the world.
We thank you all so very much..
Finally, a candle was lit on our War Memorial
on 4th August, uniting our village with other
villages, towns and cities across the country.

On May 19th 1995 the Coastwatch Station
in Mundesley was formally opened.
It followed a telephone call to Richard May,
Founder, Station President and still, a
Watchkeeper at the Station.
It has remained open as a visual and listen-
ing station ever since, keeping watch over
360 sq. miles of the North Sea, with local
volunteer watchkeepers having given in
excess of 69,000 hours of voluntary
service in that time!
The station is open for ten hours each day
and, for 365 days of the year.
In 1994, two fshermen lost their lives off the
Cornish coast below a recently closed Coast-
guard lookout, nearly all the Coastguard
lookouts having been closed, including
the one at Mundesley.
This event led to two people, one a local
fsherman, to open and restore a visual
and listening watch.
The frst station being at Bass Point on the
Lizard, in Cornwall with Mundesley being
the third to open and today 49 stations of
the National Coastwatch keep a visual &
listening watch around the coastline of
England and Wales. All staffed by some
2000 unpaid volunteers and at no cost
to the taxpayer.
The lookout at Mundesley, which forms part
of the Mundesley Maritime Museum, was
offered to National Coastwatch by
Mundesley Parish Council.
Coastwatch were able to use the building once
more for the purpose for which it was originally
built. At the time of opening, equipment was
limited to a brass direction pointer left behind
by the Coastguard and some personally
owned binoculars.
Even today, the watchkeepers still use the
original brass direction pointer, despite the
fact that we have up to date Radar, Radio,
a powerful telescope, several pairs of bino-
culars, a Weather Station & an Automatic
Identifcation System, driven by a satellite,
and a computer to help us!
All of this equipment has been purchased
through our own fundraising efforts, Street
& store collections, donations, grants, gifts,
car boot sales and Christmas card sales.
In June 2009, the Mundesley station was
awarded the prestigious Queens Award
for Voluntary Service, the highest award
given to volunteer groups across the UK.
At the time Mundesley were the only
Coastwatch station to have received
the Award.
