FOREWORD
A D V A N C E S IN C H E M IS T R Y SERIES was founded i n 1949 by the
A mer ic an C hemic al S ociety as an outlet for symposia and c ol -
lections of data i n special areas of topical interest that coul d
not be accommodated i n the Society' s journals. It provides a
medium for symposia that woul d otherwise be fragmented,
their papers distributed among several journals or not pub-
l ished at al l . Papers are refereed critical l y according to A C S
editorial standards and receive the careful attention and proc-
essing characteristic of A C S publ ications. Papers publ ished
i n A D V A N C E S I N C H E M IS T R Y SERIES are original contributions
not publ ished elsewhere i n whol e or major part and incl ude
reports of research as wel l as reviews since symposia may em-
brace both types of presentation.
