PHYSICAL EXAMINATION FOR EMPLOYEES

To insure that new employees hired at the hospital are properly matched to the
physical requirements of the jobs for which they are hired, pre-placement physical
examinations will be required in appropriate departments. Physical examinations
provide us with a medical evaluation of the individual's physical capacity to safely
perform the "essential elements" of the job. If (s)he is deemed unable to perform these
essential elements, then we must determine whether "reasonable accommodations"
can be made for him/her.
PROCEDURE
A. Pre-Employment -
1. The hospital requires all new employees to complete a health history and
to receive a full, physical examination performed by a licensed physician
within two weeks prior to the first day of employment, or upon
employment. The hospital shall establish criteria for determining the
completeness of physical examinations for employees.
2. Upon confirmation of employment, the prospect employee then undergo
physical and medical examination to identify if his/her health condition is
suitable for the work being applied for.
Initial Procedures should include, but are not limited to:
1. Medical History
2. Immunization History
3. Physical Examination
4. Chest X-ray
5. CBC, Urinalysis, stool exam
6. Drug Test (cannabinoids and methamphetamines)
Follow-up procedures depend on the findings and prerogative of the
corporation

B. Post-Employment
1. Employees who have signs or symptoms of a communicable disease shall
not be permitted to perform functions that expose residents to the risk of
transmission of the disease.
2. If a communicable disease prevents the employee from working, a
physicians statement approving the employees return to work shall be
required.
3. Prior to the employees return to work, the physicians or statement shall
be reviewed by the medical director. However, when an employee has
been absent for no longer than three days, the employees return to work
may be approved by either the Director of Nursing (or designee), or the
Infection Control Committee, following assessment by a Registered
Professional Nurse (usually the Employee Health Nurse).
TREATMENT OF PERSONNEL WITH ILLNESS
1. All personnel with illness should report to their direct supervisors or directly to thir
physician of choice connected to the hospital. If they opted to consult other
physicians, they must secure medical record/certificate to that effect;
2. Personnel who has direct or indirect contact with patients via food or fomites
should be excused from duty if they have an infection that poses a hazard to
patients or to other personnel (e.g. infections of the respiratory tract, the
gastrointestinal tract or the skin);
3. Personnel who develop infections should be given sick leave until they are no
longer considered hazardous to others;
4. Patient care personnel having overt clinical infection (e.g. streptococcal
pharyngitis, influenza or staphylococcal furuncle) should be restricted from
patient contact. Personnel with minor infections can usually continue to work so
long as they understand the risk to others and are in their practice of personal
hygiene.
5. Prophylactic treatment should be provided to employees under certain
circumstances.
6. Outbreaks of infection (hepatitis, varicella-zooster, typhoid fever, etc.) within the
hospital may prompts a search for personnel carrier as part of the study and
control of the outbreak.
