NVBU Upgrade Considerations

When you perform an upgrade, the current installation type must determine whether
you install the server or client package on the designated system.

Before you upgrade any NVBU Client, you must upgrade the NVBU erver.

!he NVBU Client software version cannot "e higher than the NVBU erver software
version. #n NVBU erver only supports clients of the same version as itself or older.

$f you are using the %omain &anagement functionality to remotely manage an NVBU
erver, you must also upgrade the Controlling erver.

'or upgrades from NVBU v(.).* and later versions, run the install program as usual
depending on the operating system. !he installation software will scan the system for an
e*isting installation of NVBU. +nce found, a dialog will appear noting that NVBU is
already installed. !he install program will ask for confirmation to upgrade the e*isting
version to the latest version. When confirmed, the upgrade procedure will "egin and use
the e*isting directories for the current installation.

'or upgrades from v(.,.* and earlier versions, contact -uest Customer upport for
assistance.
$mportant. $f the current version of NVBU is already installed on your machine, running
the install.exe again will remove NVBU, including the NV%B.
Backing up the Existing NVDB
!he first step in preparing for an upgrade is to perform a "ackup of the e*isting NV%B.
$n the event that an upgrade is unsuccessful, the previous version of NVBU can "e
reinstalled, and this "ackup can "e recovered to ena"le trou"leshooting of the failed
upgrade without interfering with an e*isting "ackup schedule. 'or more information
a"out "acking up the NV%B with the /lug0in for Databases, refer to -uest NetVault
Backup Built0in /lug0ins User1s 2uide.
$mportant. #fter the successful recovery of the NV%B, the details pertaining to the
previous logs will "e stored in the logs_restored_<YYYYMMDD> li"rary 3where
<YYYYMMDD> refers to the date the YearMonthDate format4.
Performing NVDB Backups
The NVDB is the central repository for the NVBU Server and various configuration
files. To safeguard your NVBU Server, you must perform regular backups of the
NVDB. The NVDB backups allos you to recover an NVBU Server in the event of
a disaster. !ou can schedule a daily backup of the NVDB once all other "obs have
completed, and use specific media or media group for these backups.
Note: #n NVDB backup should not be performed hen another "ob or media
scanning is in progress.
The procedure for backing up the NVDB includes steps outlined in the folloing

NVDB backup ill remove all information related to the backups stored on that
device. To use such backups, you must re-add the NVSD Device to the NVBU
Server ith the same NVBU 1achine Name, and scan the device to import all
backups. /f you do not ant to use the NVSD device, but retain the backup
information in the NVDB, use the O$$line option instead of removing the NVSD
Device.
Important Notes
The NVDB check and compact actions can also be performed using the
n&meddbc"eck and n&sc"eddbc"eck +4/ commands. &or more
information about these commands, refer to the Quest NetVault Backup
Command Line Interface Reference Guide.
The NVDB check and compact actions generate several log messages
during e3ecution. &or more information about these log messages, refer to
the 5NVDB +heck and +ompact 4ogs6 section in the Quest NetVault Backup
Command Line Interface Reference Guide.
The compact action only updates the database tables7 it does not update the

the table files, thereby reducing the si'e of the database tables.
