Purpose The post holder will help to ensure that ILC-UK maintains influence and contributes to evidence based policy-making in the field of ageing. Reports to Director of Research and Strategy Direct Reports Supervises other staff members on research projects as appropriate. Main Responsibilities 1 Produce high quality reports, academic papers and journal articles of a publishable standard based on the analysis of data and literature with a clear and engaging writing style. 2 Work independently and autonomously on a number of research and policy projects simultaneously, as required. 3 Analyse quantitative and qualitative data using robust methods and interpret, describe and publish findings. 4 Comprehensively review and analyse academic and grey literature based on methodical and replicable search strategies. 5 Identify new topics and develop and obtain funding for proposals (including academic, private and public sector funders) supporting policy-relevant research projects that employ a range of social research methods; assist other team members in obtaining funding for future projects. 6 Manage external relationships with funders and other stakeholders. 7 Present papers based on policy and research work to policy-makers, academics and other audiences including the media. 8 As appropriate, aid in the collection of primary quantitative and qualitative data. 9 Deploy a proactive approach, as well as a strong and demonstrable interest in ageing issues, to ensure that the ILC-UK maintains influence and contributes to evidence based policy-making. 10 To work with other members of the team as required. Person Specification 1 Essential: Degree or Higher degree in Social Sciences. 2 Essential: A proven track-record of policy-relevant research; Desirable: Experience of quantitative research (not essential) 3 Demonstrable experience of producing high quality reports for publication in either an academic or policy environment 4 Ability to write engaging articles, briefs and reports for different audiences. 5 Experience of fundraising through leading on, or contributing to, tenders or project proposals from ideally a range of funders, including Government, academic trusts, foundations and charities.
6 Ability to manage a research project from inception to completion, including project and budgetary management and managing junior members of staff. 7 Demonstrable interest or experience of working on ageing related issues and a knowledge or interest of public policy environment in this field including policy development and the political process. 8 Experience or interest in the dissemination of research and the presentation of results in an academic, public or policy setting. 9 Experience of leading or contributing to tenders or projects proposals. 10 Ability to work independently but to offer support and guidance to more junior members of the research team as well as work with other members of the team. General Information Starting Salary Starting salary will be set between 30,000 and 40,000, depending on experience. Hours Based on a full-time position normal hours of work are 35 per week, Monday to Friday but the ILC-UK are willing to consider part-time arrangements, secondments or permanent placements for the right candidate. Annual Leave 25 days paid leave per leave year. This is exclusive of public holidays. The leave year runs from 1st April to 31st March. Contract The post is offered as on a year contract initially (subject to successfully passing a 6 month probation period) with strong expectation of extension for the right candidate.
