for the 2014-15 year.
Under the mandate, students lunches at schools with
free- and reduced-lunch students must have a weighted
average of $2.70. If not, the
district must raise prices 10
cents per year until they reach
the average. This is the third
year the district has raised
prices 10 cents.

itoring is critical.
If your kids havent yet demonstrated financial maturity they may not
be ready for an unsecured credit card or
loan. Other alternatives include:
A secured credit card, where users
can charge up to the amount deposited to open the account. Purchases are
charged against the accounts revolving
credit limit. As they pay off the balance the available credit rises, just like
a regular credit card. After a period of
on-time payments, ask the lender to
convert it to an unsecured card, or to
at least add an unsecured amount to the
account.
A prepaid debit card, where you load
the card with money in advance and
they use the card for purchases or ATM
withdrawals. You monitor account
activity online or by phone.
With each, fees and restrictions may
apply so shop around for the best terms.
If you need help educating your
kids about personal financial management, a good resource is Whats
My Score (www.whatsmyscore.org),
a financial literacy program for young
adults run by Visa Inc. It features
a comprehensive workbook called
Money 101: A Crash Course in Better
Money Management, which can be
downloaded for free.
Bottom line: Getting your kids off
on the right foot, credit-wise, can
make all the difference to their future
financial health.
Winners in the 5-6-year-olds include, from left, Garrett Dietrich, third place; Calvin Menke, first place;
and Luke Menke, second place.

Its no coincidence that McIlroys big
run started the week after he split with
Caroline Wozniacki. There was concern
in his camp that McIlroy was having
a hard time getting into a routine to
become the worlds best golfer when he
was flying all over the world.
He has been all about golf since,
except for the few occasions where
he gathers with friends to drink out of
golfs most important trophies. McIlroy
gave a glimpse of the latest celebration
when he tweeted three words the day
after winning the PGA.

SEC examining
alternative
mutual funds
WASHINGTON (AP)
Federal regulators are scrutinizing a type of mutual
fund thats potentially riskier than conventional funds
and is growing in popularity,
prompting concerns over possible harm to ordinary investors.
The
Securities
and
Exchange Commission has
disclosed that its conducting
a national sweep exam of
so-called alternative mutual
funds, focusing in a first phase
on 15 to 20 groups of funds.
The SEC official who heads
the agencys investment fund
division says the review looks
at the funds ready assets and
oversight of them by fund
boards.
The regulators also are
examining data on the use of
riskier investment strategies
by alternative funds compared
with what they disclose to
investors, the SEC official,
Norm Champ, said in a speech
in June.
The alternative funds use
investment strategies similar
to those employed by hedge
funds, which can include
commodities and complex
derivatives as well as ordinary
stocks.
The Financial Industry
Regulatory Authority, the
security industrys selfpolicing body, has issued an
investor alert telling people
to be aware of the characteristics and risks of alternative funds. Alternative funds
are not your typical mutual
funds, the FINRA alert is
titled. It warns that investors
should carefully consider
not only how an (alternative)
fund works, but how it might
fit into their overall portfolio
before investing.
The alternative funds have
attracted growing interest,
especially in the retail market. Alternative funds had
more than $300 billion in
assets as of May 31, according to Champ. Although they
accounted for only 2.3 percent
of mutual funds overall as
of December, investor inflows
into alternative funds last
year represented 32.4 percent
of the inflows for the entire
mutual fund industry. That is
five times more than in 2012.
500 index fell 3.17 points, or 0.2 percent, to 1,933.75 and the Nasdaq composite fell 12.08 points, or 0.3 percent,
to 4,389.25.
Energy stocks in the S&P 500 fell 0.7
percent, the most of the 10 sectors in the
index. Kinder Morgan declined nearly
2 percent after rising 9 percent the
day before on news it would combine
several companies under its control.
Anadarko Petroleum (NYSE:APC) and
Diamond Offshore Drilling (NYSE:DO)
fell more than 2 percent.
Energy stocks have declined noticeably in the last month, due largely to
falling oil and natural gas prices. Brent
crude, which is traded in the U.K. and
is considered a broader gauge of the
international oil market, is trading at a
nine-month low. U.S. crude is trading at
a seven-month low.
The price of U.S. crude oil slipped 71
cents to $97.37 a barrel Tuesday. That
followed three days of increases over
concerns about the reliability of Iraqi oil
production.
There were other signs that investors
were in a risk-off mode. The Russell
2000 index, which is made up primarily
of smaller and riskier companies, fell
0.8 percent, much more than the rest of
the market.

Money
ter, and I still dont understand
why we would need one. We
have no children, and we
would be leaving the money
to charity. -- H.L., via email
DEAR H.L.: I dont see
where you have anything to
concern yourself with. You
tied it up when you said you
will be leaving the money to a
charity you decide upon.
Approach the charity as
quickly as possible when
you make the decision and
explain that you are leaving
the money to it. The charity
will be responsible for paying
whatever money is required to
probate the will. Trust me, it
will be happy to do that with
its own lawyers and without
any expense to you.
DEAR BRUCE: I own
a condominium that is worth
around $65,000, according
to the appraiser. I want to
relocate to Michigan because
I was offered a better position in my company. I have
$35,000 left on the loan. A
nice young couple offered me
$55,000 cash.
Do you think I should settle for a $10,000 loss or wait
until a better offer comes?
What if a better offer doesnt
come? The housing market
doesnt seem to be very good.
-- Peter, via email
DEAR PETER: Your
problem is a simple one. The
appraisal of $65,000 is strictly
a matter of guessing and not
written in stone. You want to
go to Michigan for a better
job, you have $35,000 left
on the loan, and youve been
offered $55,000 cash. That
seems to be a no-brainer. It
would be different if the market was on a definite uphill,
but that doesnt seem to be
the case.
You never know when
you buy real estate whether
its going to go up, down or
stay the same. In this case,
it apparently went down. If
your investigation is correct,
take the $55,000, pay off the
mortgage and get on with your
new life.
DEAR BRUCE: Does it
really make a difference if
you earn a high school diploma versus getting a GED?
-- Harold
DEAR HAROLD: They
are both valuable tools, but
given the choice between
the diploma and the GED,
I would go for the diploma
every time.
A General Educational
Development certificate is for
someone who is not able to
complete high school for any
number of reasons. If you
can take the four years, by all
means do so.
