II Kings 7:3–9 (The Message)

It happened that four lepers were sitting just
outside the city gate. They said to one another,
“What are we doing sitting here at death’s door?
4
If we enter the famine-struck city we’ll die; if we
stay here we’ll die. So let’s take our chances in
the camp of Aram and throw ourselves on their

If Baptists adopt a more moderate stance
on social issues, the temptation for Democrats
will be to mimic Republican candidates of the
past few years and cater to evangelicals. We are
already seeing some of this with Democratic
candidates speaking freely about their faith. For
example, in a recent CNN debate where religion
was the specific topic, John Edwards was asked
about the biggest sin he had ever committed.
If Baptists choose to stay on their present path
of partisan loyalty, they will continue to politicize
their faith. The politics of denominationalism
has already de-railed a major mission thrust that
began in the ‘70s and was intended to carry
the message of Jesus to the whole world. Now
the rancor of politics and religion is beginning

DAY OF DECENCY
Save The Date and Join The Protest

O
n Tuesday, August 7, at 11:00 a.m. (CST), the National Action Network’s Decency
Initiative will take to the streets in 20 cities, including Chicago, in an effort to mound
public pressure on the music industry to adopt a universal standard of respect for all people.
Since April, the Decency Initiative, under the leadership of Reverend Al Sharpton and Tamika Mal-
lory, and in collaboration with dozens of activists across the nation, has demanded that the music
recording industry eliminate the use of the offensive “n,” “b,” and “h” words in recordings. Because
no other ethnic group is subjected to denigration for profit by the music industry, the Decency Ini-
tiative will continue to demand a universal standard of respect, particularly for all women and African
Americans.
Protests and press conferences will take place outside the offices of major music distributors that
distribute this offensive music within our communities. The protests will be multicultural and will
include all age groups. We invite all women and men (especially leaders and students), from all facets
of the community to join us. We will stand united in defense of decency, and protest the use of public
airwaves to promote disrespect. This gathering is just the beginning of a national movement to
achieve this end.
For more information, send an e-mail to the Chicago Chapter of the National Action Network at
NAN_Chgo@yahoo.com, or visit the National Action Network’s website at www.nationalactionnetwork.net.

WE ARE LEAVING RADIO STATION WJYS!

A
fter many years of trying to be faithful in ministry to our television viewing audience we
have had to make a financial decision because of the lack of funds. We would rather lose the
viewing audience who watches us on Sunday nights than lose staff!
We do not have the money to stay on WJYS any longer. When the decision was made, as to whether
or not we should come off of WJYS or fire staff, we decided (as we always do) to make our choice in
light of the human costs and the potential loss to families of income. We would rather lose television
viewers than lose staff members who depend on their income to support their families.
Staying on WJYS is costing our congregation a tremendous amount of money. We are losing in
excess of $14,000.00 a month! Our television viewers do not support us financially. Our television
viewers do not buy tapes. Our television viewers do not send donations and we pay for that WJYS
airtime entirely out of our church offerings!
We cannot afford to be on WJYS and on national television at the same time. We will remain on
national television and we can be seen (videotaped or TiVo’d) every Sunday morning at six-thirty in
the morning Central Standard Time.
We are on the only Black-owned national television cable channel in the country. We support Black
businessmen and Black businesswomen and we will continue to support Cathy Hughes and TV One
as we try to minister to our national television audience every Sunday morning.
Please alert all of your friends and family members who do not have Direct TV or TV One that
they have from now until Sunday, July 29th to get it. That is if they want to continue to watch us on
television!
The cost for that cable coverage per year would be more than they have given Trinity in all of the
years that we have been on television station WJYS.
We will continue to be on TV One and we thank you for your loyal support of our congregation
and its Media Ministry.

JULY 22ND IS OUR LAST SUNDAY ON WJYS!

Gratefully yours,

Reverend Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr.

Senior Pastor

S TE WARDSHIP
the results of a Redeemed LifE
Heirs to a King

O
nce upon a time, in a town where everyone talked about
being average, but no one really thought they were, there
lived a man who amazed his neighbors by what he said
about his children. He was like other people, yet different. When he
first moved in, his neighbor thought him ordinary enough. He went
to work. He mowed the lawn. He took his children to the circus. But
the more they saw and the more they heard, the more they realized
that there was something different about this man…and his children.
There was a loyalty, unity and purpose that set them apart. They lived
as though they were accountable to someone. They were part of the
community, and yet belonged beyond it, like folks on a visit or travelers
passing through.
Over time, for instance, the neighbors gradually noticed that this
man and his family had a concept of time different from theirs. In
the first place, he planned his leisure time to include his family. They
seemed to have so much fun together, going places together. The
neighbors envied his family life. They couldn’t seem to find time for
their families to do things together. Also, the man took time for God.
Each day, he and his family had devotions together; and the way they
talked about God and the Bible was natural and familiar — the way one
talks about a friend dearly loved and a book one knows and enjoys.
He talked about time and talent as “Stewardship.” He believed that
Stewardship related to every area of life. He said, “Stewardship is not
people’s plan for making money, but God’s plan for making people.
These children are not my children, they are the children of a King —
my King! It is my privilege to bring them up for Him. Why shouldn’t
I be patient? Why shouldn’t I have standards for them beyond this
town? They are heirs of the Kingdom. In all they do, they must be an
honor to the King.”
Your Friends in Service,

The Stewardship Ministry
