Western Australia Perth Metropolitan
Whitby Falls Memorial Park. LACH 2013. Mitchell Ledger - 221087807
I like this place and could willingly waste my time in it.
- William Shakespeare.
Whitby Falls Memorial Park is a place for remembrance, a place to be enjoyed
and a place representing native, rural Australia. Over the next twenty years the
site, located off South West Highway will be transformed into a park that can
be experienced by the whole community.
Keeping the rural aspect of the site will allow people to get close and enjoy
Australias agricultural aspect. All while providing a healthy revenue for the
Metropolitan Cemetery Board and contributing to the economy.

The natural burial option provides people with a unique and contemporary way
of putting to rest their loved ones. The park is not just about the past but always
looking to future, as this process is not widely recognised.
Being a memorial park numerous options for tribute plaques are available and
the picturesque site provides a beautiful and relaxed option for remembering
and celebrating.

The Avenue extends north from the administration and cafe precinct along an
axis to the chapel. Aligned with jacaranda trees and flanked by crop fields to
west and memorial walls to the east it is a central, prominent feature. The ave-
nue is where the beginning stages of the ceremony takes place. Allowing peo-
ple to walk along side the hearse as they make way to the chapel. It provides an
intimate, picturesque moment for those to reflect upon their loved ones.

The fields of Whitby Memorial Park are fully working and fully functional. They
not only provide revenue, being able to yield a variety of crops, but they por-
tray a historical element representing the existing site before redevelopment.
The memorial walk winds through the fields with plaques on either side where
people can pause for a moment to remember their loved ones. Along the walk
heritage relics can be seen, representing the rural and historical nature of the
site. As well as being a working field the land provides areas for natural burial,
where people can be laid to rest in a sustainable and alternative technique.

The memorial walls are a particular feature of the park that provide a contem-
porary element as well as uniquely maintaining rural representation. They are
inspired and modelled on the blades of a windmill protruding from the earth
below. Designed on a large scale their shape creates moments that evoke all
the senses, from feeling the granite texture as one is seated on the end, to the
sounds of the wind blowing along the curved edges. With Corymbia Citriadora
trees scattered on a grid in between, different views are created allowing for
a variety of experiences. Along the walls are plaques for remembrance of the
deceased and a hatch at the back for the storage of ashes.

The bush walks located to the north east and south east of Whitby Memorial
Park are designed as public open space with winding paths through the native
environment. At the pinnacle of the walk, a top the hill side are lookouts creat-
ing beautiful views out over the site and surrounding landscape. The paths are
also dotted with memorial plaques for remembrance. This part of the park pro-
vides a lighter side for the community to enjoy some of the southwest unique
bushland.
