1 Samuel 15:10-31/35 (NCV)
Then the Lord spoke his word to Samuel: 11 “I
am sorry I made Saul king, because he has
stopped following me and has not obeyed my
commands.” Samuel was upset, and he cried
out to the Lord all night long. 12 Early the next
morning Samuel got up and went to meet Saul.
But the people told Samuel, “Saul has gone to
Carmel, where he has put up a monument in
his own honor. Now he has gone down to
Gilgal.” 13 When Samuel came to Saul, Saul
said, “May the Lord bless you! I have obeyed
the Lord's commands.” 14 But Samuel said,
“Then why do I hear cattle mooing and sheep
bleating?” 15 Saul answered, “The soldiers
took them from the Amalekites. They saved the
best sheep and cattle to offer as sacrifices to
the Lord your God, but we destroyed all the
other animals.” 16 Samuel said to Saul, “Stop!
Let me tell you what the Lord said to me last
night.” Saul answered, “Tell me.” 17 Samuel
said, “Once you didn't think much of yourself,
but now you have become the leader of the
tribes of Israel. The Lord appointed you to be
king over Israel. 18 And he sent you on a
mission. He said, 'Go and destroy those evil
people, the Amalekites. Make war on them
until all of them are dead.' 19 Why didn't you
obey the Lord? Why did you take the best
things? Why did you do what the Lord said
was wrong?” 20 Saul said, “But I did obey the
Lord. I did what the Lord told me to do. I
destroyed all the Amalekites, and I brought
back Agag their king. 21 The soldiers took the
best sheep and cattle to sacrifice to the Lord
your God at Gilgal.” 22 But Samuel answered,
“What pleases the Lord more: burnt offerings
and sacrifices or obedience to his voice? It is
better to obey than to sacrifice, It is better to
listen to God than to offer the fat of sheep.
23 Disobedience is as bad as the sin of sorcery.
Pride is as bad as the sin of worshiping idols.
You have rejected the Lord's command. Now

people, and I did what they said. 25 Now, I beg
you, forgive my sin. Come back with me so I
may worship the Lord.” 26 But Samuel said to
Saul, “I won't go back with you. You rejected
the Lord's command, and now he rejects you as
king of Israel." 27 As Samuel turned to leave,
Saul caught his robe, and it tore. 28 Samuel
said to him, “The Lord has torn the kingdom of
Israel from you today and has given it to one of
your neighbors who is better than you. 29 The
Lord is the Eternal One of Israel. He does not
lie or change his mind. He is not a human
being, so he does not change his mind. 30 Saul
answered, “I have sinned. But please honor me
in front of the older leaders of my people and
in front of the Israelites. Come back with me
so that I can worship the Lord your God.”
31 So Samuel went back with Saul, and Saul
worshiped the Lord. 35 And Samuel never saw
Saul again the rest of his life, but he was sad
for Saul. And the Lord was very sorry he had
made Saul king of Israel.

Some time passed. David's son Absalom had a
beautiful sister whose name was Tamar; and
David's son Amnon fell in love with her.
2 Amnon was so tormented that he made
himself ill because of his sister Tamar, for she
was a virgin and it seemed impossible to
Amnon to do anything to her. 3 But Amnon
had a friend whose name was Jonadab, the son
of David's brother Shimeah; and Jonadab was a
very crafty man. 4 He said to him, "O son of
the king, why are you so haggard morning after
morning? Will you not tell me?" Amnon said
to him, "I love Tamar, my brother Absalom's
sister." 5 Jonadab said to him, "Lie down on

father comes to see you, say to him, 'Let my
sister Tamar come and give me something to
eat, and prepare the food in my sight, so that I
may see it and eat it from her hand.'" 6 So
Amnon lay down, and pretended to be ill; and

the king, "Please let my sister Tamar come and
make a couple of cakes in my sight, so that I
may eat from her hand." 7 Then David sent
home to Tamar, saying, "Go to your brother
Amnon's house, and prepare food for him."
8 So Tamar went to her brother Amnon's
house, where he was lying down. She took
dough, kneaded it, made cakes in his sight, and
baked the cakes. 9 Then she took the pan and
set them out before him, but he refused to eat.
Amnon said, "Send out everyone from me." So
everyone went out from him. 10 Then Amnon
said to Tamar, "Bring the food into the
chamber, so that I may eat from your hand." So
Tamar took the cakes she had made, and
brought them into the chamber to Amnon her
brother. 11 But when she brought them near
him to eat, he took hold of her, and said to her,
"Come, lie with me, my sister." 12 She
answered him, "No, my brother, do not force
me; for such a thing is not done in Israel; do
not do anything so vile! 13 As for me, where
could I carry my shame? And as for you, you
would be as one of the scoundrels in Israel.
Now therefore, I beg you, speak to the king;
for he will not withhold me from you." 14 But
he would not listen to her; and being stronger
than she, he forced her and lay with her.
15 Then Amnon was seized with a very great
loathing for her; indeed, his loathing was even
greater than the lust he had felt for her. Amnon
said to her, "Get out!" 16 But she said to him,
"No, my brother; for this wrong in sending me
away is greater than the other that you did to
me." But he would not listen to her. 17 He
called the young man who served him and said,
"Put this woman out of my presence, and bolt
the door after her." 18 (Now she was wearing a

20 Her brother Absalom said to her, "Has
Amnon your brother been with you? Be quiet
for now, my sister; he is your brother; do not
take this to heart." So Tamar remained, a
desolate woman, in her brother Absalom's
house. 21 When King David heard of all these
things, he became very angry, but he would not
punish his son Amnon, because he loved him,
for he was his firstborn. 22 But Absalom spoke
to Amnon neither good nor bad; for Absalom
hated Amnon, because he had raped his sister

Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to teach
them that they should always pray and never
become discouraged. 2 "In a certain town there
was a judge who neither feared God nor
respected people. 3 And there was a widow in
that same town who kept coming to him and
pleading for her rights, saying, 'Help me
against my opponent!' 4 For a long time the
judge refused to act, but at last he said to
himself, 'Even though I don't fear God or
respect people, 5 yet because of all the trouble
this widow is giving me, I will see to it that she
gets her rights. If I don't, she will keep on
coming and finally wear me out!' " 6 And the
Lord continued, "Listen to what that corrupt
judge said. 7 Now, will God not judge in favor
of his own people who cry to him day and
night for help? Will he be slow to help them?

it quickly. But will the Son of Man find faith

OUTDOORING ANNIVERSARY!
The anniversaries of the enstoolment of
tribal chieftains are very big moments in the
life of the Ga people in West Africa. When the
members of our church traveled to Katamansu
this past summer, we were reminded by the
Ga-Dangme people there that the anniversary
of my ”Outdooring” was coming up back in the
United States and that they expected to hear
some news of that celebration.
For our new members the
“Outdooring” is a ceremony of celebration and
thanksgiving where a tribal chieftain is honored
for his work and his leadership. “Outdooring”
is done by the people of Ga-Dangme who
could not be at the actual enstoolment in
Katamansu, Ghana.
Two years ago when I was enstooled,
the large number of Ga people who live here in
Chicago and could not be in Ghana honored
me in an “Outdooring” service here in our
Sanctuary.
On the fourth Sunday of this month,
the Ga-Dangme citizens of Chicago will
once again gather to celebrate my chieftaincy.
The entire congregation is invited to be a part
of that ceremony on the fourth Sunday in
October, October 23, 2005, at 3:00 in the
afternoon.
Our members who are a part of the Ga-
Dangme community will be hosting the
service and you are invited.

MORE GOOD NEWS
ABOUT KATRINA
Last Sunday, when I preached the good
news of Katrina (The Gospel of Katrina) I
shared with our congregation the incredibly
awesome deeds of kindness and love that so
many of our members are involved in. Well,
my beloved, this week I have some more good
news about Katrina.
Our members, Audrey Rowe and Iris
Sewell went to Mississippi during the last week
of September to support the relief organization
that Audrey’s daughter, Niani, set up
immediately after Hurricane Katrina. Niani
created a 501c3 organization called Restart
Relief.
Niani is an African American young
woman who saw how slow the government
was in responding to the needs of black folks
in Mississippi. Rather than just sit around and
be angry about what the government was not
doing, Niani set up Restart Relief to provide
immediate support to families and individuals
who were seeking shelter in Columbus,
Mississippi. Restart Relief provides clothing,
water, can goods and other services to the
families in and around Columbus. It is
currently providing goods to several of the
communities that were hardest hit - especially
and particularly the smaller communities.
Restart Relief has received financial
and personal support from Niani’s friends, her
family and from Bad Boys Worldwide. A
relative of Audrey and Niani’s is P. Diddy’s
vice president for human resources and
operations of Bad Boys Worldwide. Bad Boys
Worldwide is P. Diddy’s Foundation. Their
relative was instrumental in getting P. Diddy’s

support and Bad Boys Worldwide’s financial
support.
As of this past Sunday, P. Diddy has
helped Niani’s Restart Relief by sending three
truckloads of clothing, toiletries and goods to
Columbus, Mississippi. He has also promised
ongoing financial support to Restart Relief.
While Audrey and Iris were in
Mississippi, they visited Hattiesburg and met
Deacon Deborah Washington’s cousin,
Roderick Woullard who is a County Supervisor
serving Hattiesburg. Roderick considers
Trinity UCC his Chicago church. When he
found out where Audrey and Iris were
members, the meeting focusing on the needs of
communities in Mississippi turned to a
discussion about Trinity United Church of
Christ and its ministry!
Audrey reports the following from her
trip, and I wanted to share this part of her
report with you: This trip was a sobering
experience for us. The devastation we saw in
the community, along the highway and our
discussions with local leaders on what it will
take to rebuild were overwhelming. The
rebuilding of these communities will take five
years or more. In Moosepoint, the concern was
a loss of medical professionals who had left the
areas and would not return!
For my daughter, Niani, her insurance
will take care of most of her losses. But for
thousands of poor families in Mississippi, the
rebuilding promises may turn out to be empty
words. If there was ever a time when we are
needed by our brothers and sisters in
Mississippi and Louisiana, it is now. I intend
to do whatever I can to help hold our
government accountable to the promises that
were made.

ANOTHER TRINITARIAN
ON STAGE!
“The Man of La Mancha” is currently
playing at the Court Theatre at the University
of Chicago. It started on September 29th and it
will run through November 6, 2005.
The Court Theatre is at 5525 South
Ellis Avenue. Our member, Harriet Plumpp, is
Antonia in the play!
Most of you remember that “The Man
of La Mancha” is the epic story of the knight
Don Quixote, his servant, Sancho and the
woman of his dreams, the lovely
Saldonza/Dulcinea.
Harriet’s mother, Falvia Plumpp-
Roberts, has been an active member of our
church for many, many years. Harriet has
served her church faithfully and now she “lives
out her dramatic calling” in a play at the Court
Theatre.
Members of the church are invited to
see this story, which is based on Cervante’s
Adventures of Don Quixote. The play is about
the human struggle against all odds to dream
impossible dreams.

 October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Domestic Violence Care/Advocacy Ministry
Common Myths About Domestic Violence
Myth #1: Domestic violence victims are helpless, passive and fragile; have little or no
education, no job skills and numerous children; and are usually people of color.

Fact: Domestic violence is equal opportunity; it crosses all socioeconomic, ethnic, racial,
educational, age and religious lines.

Myth #2: If a victim does not leave the abuser, she/he must enjoy the abuse.

Fact: There are many reasons why victims stay, none of which has anything to do with any
enjoyment or gratification from being abused. This myth, like many others, is a form of
victim blaming, taking responsibility from the abuser and placing it on the victim.

Myth #3: Domestic violence victims must have done something to cause the abuse.

Fact: This is another form of victim blaming. There is nothing a victim can do to cause or
prevent the abuser from being violent. The abuser CHOOSES to be abusive and violent.

Myth #4: Abusers have an anger management problem.

Fact: Most abusers do not have a problem controlling their anger. For example, they would
not become abusive with their supervisors and co-workers if they were angry at work.
Abusers are violent because they want to have power and control over their victims.

Myth #5: Drugs and alcohol cause the abusive behavior.

Fact: An abuser’s substance use or abuse is often used as an excuse for the behavior but it is
never the cause. Drugs and alcohol may make the abuse occur more frequently or make it
more severe, but research shows that even when abusers are sober the abuse continues. The
abuser will find something or someone else to blame for the behavior.

THE STARFISH

As the old man walked the beach at

dawn, he noticed a young man ahead of
him picking up starfish and flinging them
back into the sea.
Finally, catching up with the youth,
he asked him why he was doing this. The
answer was that the stranded starfish would
die if left until the morning sun.
“But the beach goes on for miles
and there are millions of starfish,”
countered the old man. “How can your
efforts make any difference?”
The young man looked at the A Woman’s Worship Service
starfish in his hand and then threw it to from
safety in the waves. “It makes a difference
