Dear Reader,
Smart Hydraulics is the motto of our
booth at the Hannover Messe 2011 in the
special MDA (Motion Drive and Auto-
mation) exhibition from April 4 to 8.
This nicely matches with the possibility
to drive a real Smart car on our booth.
Please be invited to a test drive! We
are not kidding! You will nd a real car
packed with intelligent hydraulics from
ARGO-HYTOS nicely positioned on our
stand where real driving is simulated in a
real car. You dont have to go on a road
to learn how to drive or to work on your
driving style. Just try out the hydraulic
Smartmover at our booth.
Smart Hydraulics is more than just
energy efciency! Energy efciency
again is the focus of hydraulics during
this MDA. Most energy efciency can
be achieved in our industry by
designing the right system. Knowledge-
able engineers and a clever product
program make real energy efcient
solutions for better hydraulics. Both
you can nd at ARGO-HYTOS: Just
Smart Hydraulics.
I would like to point out another im-
portant fact. Often we nd hydraulics
which are completely oversized in their
layout. One security factor overlaps the
next one and we suddenly end up with
a system that doesnt t: too heavy,
too much material, too many compo-
nents which are oversized and use
up too much space. Material can be
saved and costs can be reduced. Many
customers could use smaller compo-
nents, more compact manifolds and
smarter connection systems for com-
ponents. Just enough is the target.
At ARGO-HYTOS you nd modular
solutions in many product families to
achieve this smart hydraulic concept.

In this ash issue you will nd many
innovative concepts and new product
ideas that enrich this big world class
showcase, the Hannover Messe 2011.

n RPEK2 From valve to
modular blocks
The development of the RPEK1 directio-
nal control valve was driven by the desire
to efciently achieve simple directional
functions while conserving space. The
valves are designed for a ow of up to
20 l/min and pressures up to 250 bars,
illustrating the focus of the series on
applications using gear pumps to ge-
nerate pressure. Combining the RPEK1
directional control valve and the SMA05
hydraulic power unit results in a compact
unit which boasts a variety of functions
in a minimum of space.
Both in combination with small units
and as valve islands, the RPEK1 occa-
sionally reached its limits because only
directional functions without secondary
functions were supported. An increasing
number of applications with secondary
valves and added functionality for the
directional control valves led to the
development of the RPEK2 block.
The challenge for the design
engineers was the integration
of:
pilot operated check valves
throttle check valves
secondary pressure relief valves
pressure reducing valves
2/2 seat valves
As the ARGO-HYTOS product range
already features a complete nominal size
04 CETOP series with all of the common
modular valves, a two-tier expansion
range of the RPEK2 valve series was
introduced. The nominal size 04 modu-
lar valves, proven over many years and
F l u i d & Mo t i o n C o n t r o l
available around the world, are used as
a longitudinal valve combination for the
RPEK2 blocks (see Figure 1) and screw-in
valves were combined with pre-existing
valve assemblies in new ange housings
for a sandwich arrangement of valves
(see Figure 2).

3 F l u i d & Mo t i o n C o n t r o l
Due to the modular design, the sand-
wich arrangement of valves and the
longitudinal valve combination can be
combined as desired. By using stan-
dardised ange patterns according to
ISO 4401 and screw-in valves with the
worlds most common hole geometries
3/4 UNF and 7/8 UNF, our design en-
gineers have managed to combine the
tried and trusted with innovation.
The number of sections is limited to
eight due to the elastic limit of the
assembly bolts. With an input block in
the middle, up to eight sections can be
ange-mounted to each side, making a
maximum of 16 sections per valve inter-
connection possible.
Input blocks with centralised pressure
relief devices and switchable depressu-
rised cycles are available in addition to
proportional control loops to inuence
the velocity of individual consumers.
The proportional control loop features
a three-way pressure maintenance
valve and regulates the system pressure
to approx. 10 bars above load. Orices in
the consumer connections can be used
in conjunction with the adjustable three-
way pressure maintenance valve as speed
limitations for individual consumers.
Compared to valves with nominal size
04 and 06, the RPEK2 boasts signicant
advantages in terms of weight and space
requirements (see comparison chart).
Areas of application for the RPEK2
series directional control valve include,
for example additional and auxiliary
functions in construction and agri-
cultural machines. The maximum power
of 20 l/min at pressures of up to 250 bars
is more than sufcient for a wide ran-
ge of applications. In combination with
the SMA05 hydraulic power unit, many
functions for machine tools, sawing
machines and mobile applications can
be effectively realised in compact form.

nNew filter series for
in-line mounting
Spin-on lters are frequently found in
hydraulic systems in small wheel loaders
and excavators, in mowers and tele-
handlers as well as in municipal vehicles
and machine tools. These lters have
design-related negative effects on the
environment because a large part of
the lter housing is disposed of during
maintenance.
Due to constantly increasing power
density, tighter environmental regula-
tions and safety requirements, original
equipment manufacturers and users are
after a more efcient alternative to the
spin-on lter.
Filters mounted on the tank offer cost
savings in operation but with very com-
pact machines they are often difcult
to access and thus more difcult to
maintain.
ARGO-HYTOS will be introducing three
new lter series for in-line mounting at
the Hannover Messe 2011: In addition to
suction and return lters, return-suction-
lters for closed hydraulic circuits have
also been developed.
The mechanic/hydraulic interfaces and
the dimensions are based on common
spin-on lters, making the changeover
easy for users.
The high standard of quality is reected
in the new ARGO-HYTOS design, which
combines functionality with a clear
design.
Economic feed circuit ltration
The new E 068 / E 088 return-suction-
lters for in-line mounting are available
in two sizes. The bypass valve integrated
into the head of the lter supplies
the lling pump of the closed hydraulic
circuit with prestressed oil. This reduces
the risk of cavitation during a cold start.
The bypass valve integrated into the l-
ter element prevents unacceptably high
dynamic pressures in the system return
line. A downstream protective strainer
protects the pump in cold start from
coarse particles.
With the two EXAPOR

MAX2 lter
meshes available, the following oil
cleanlinesses are attainable according to
ISO 4406:
10 EX2: 14/11/ 7...18/15/11
16 EX2: 17/14/10...20/17/12
The lter mesh 16 EX2 already signi-
cantly exceeds the requirements of the
manufacturer of hydrostatic drives in
part.
ECO = ECOlogical x ECOnomical
With this motto, based on the new
ARGO-HYTOS design, these three
lter series were designed as ef-
cient and environmentally friendly
alternatives to conventional spin-on
lters
Return-suction-lter
Maximum pump protection through
full ow suction ltration
The new LS 025080 line installation
suction lter with a neness of 50 m is
perfectly suited to protect the pumps of
hydraulic systems or the lling pumps of
hydrostatic drives.
There are a total of four sizes available
for different volume ow ranges.
The aerodynamic design of the housing
in conjunction with a 0.3 bar bypass
valve result in extremely low pressure
losses even when taking into account
high start viscosities.
Vacuum switches or manometers can be
afxed to monitor the lters.
Efcient return line ltering
Especially when using the latest

ration, the new D 090320 series
of return lters achieves outstanding
oil cleanlinesses. Due
to the compact con-
struction and design

nEnergy efficiency and
resource conservation
made possible by inno-
vative ARGO-HYTOS filter
systems
Energy efciency and the associated fuel
savings constitute part of the current cli-
mate debate, as fuel economisation cor-
relates to a reduction in CO
2
emissions.
Energy efciency is thus one of the key
factors in effective climate protection.
If nothing else, conserving energy can
contribute to the containment of climate
change.
In the future, successful companies will
focus more and more on the develop-
ment of energy-efcient products, ensu-
ring their competitive advantage in the
global marketplace.
Save energy but how?
Many of the measures that are said to
lead to energy savings rst require in-
vestments to be made in new techno-
logies such as, for example, refurbishing
motors, recovering braking energy, hy-
brid drives and lightweight construction.
However, the potential for savings can
also be found in unexpected places like
hydraulic lters.
In cooperation with research institutions,
ARGO-HYTOS has been looking for
solutions to reduce pressure loss. Cal-
culations have shown that the specic
ow resistance depends on the lter
materials used as well as on the struc-
ture and length of the fold spaces, the
so-called fold channels.
The longer the fold channel, the greater
the specic ow resistance. The reason
for this increase is that the hydraulic
medium cannot ow uninhibited through
the fold channel. The pressure difference
presses both sides of the fold on top of
one another. The supporting fabric is the
only thing keeping the fold channel open.
With the help of computational uid
dynamics, knowledge was gained regar-
ding the conditions in the fold channel
and the main inuencing factors on the
pressure loss in the folded lter material
were exposed and optimised.
The solution!
A special weaving technology used in the
manufacture of the new EXAPOR

MAX 2
lter material guarantees that the fold
channels are held open to the optimal
extent. The pressure loss in the fold is
thus reduced by up to 50 %.
The knowledge gained through simula-
tions was implemented in practice and
conrmed in numerous tests. Conver-
sely, the reduction of the pressure loss
in the lter of up to 40% at constant vo-
lume ow means that a volume ow of
up to 65% higher can be achieved at the
given pressure loss.
When it comes to the design of hydrau-
lic systems, this means that depending
on the application, smaller lters can be
used, which in turn saves weight, resour-
ces and costs. In existing systems, the
lower differential pressure brings about
an improvement in energy efciency
since the pressure loss is reduced by an
average of 20% with EXAPOR

MAX 2
lter elements.
A calculation example illustrates how
much energy can be saved in this way.
E
hydr
= Energy [kWh]
p = Differential pressure [bar]
V = Volume ow [l/min]
Bh = Operating hours [h]
With an average volume ow of
100 l/min, an average differential
pressure of 1 bar over the life cycle of a
lter and 1000 operating hours, the user
saves 33 kWh per year. Assuming that
the plant is operated by electricity, this
would be a savings of 6.67 at an elec-
tricity price of 0.20 /kWh and a CO
2

reduction of approx. 19 kg.
It does not seem like much at rst
glance but seen from the quanti-
ty of EXAPOR

MAX 2 lter elements,

it would result in a savings of approx.
16.7 million KWh and thus a CO
2
re-
duction of approx. 10,000 tonnes
1
per
year. That is the equivalent CO
2
emission
of more than 5,000 cars.

nFNA 110 filter unit for
lubrication and cooling in
wind turbine gearboxes
In order to cool and lubricate the gear-
boxes in wind energy plants, systems
that can reliably guarantee, even in
unfavourable conditions, the necessary
pressure for the lubrication or sufcient
oil for cooling are required. The compon-
ents must be designed to operate safely
at temperatures ranging from -30 C (or
-40 C for the cold climate version) to
+70 C.
The ARGO-HYTOS FNA 110 lter unit for
lubricating and cooling circuits in gear-
boxes for wind energy plants can also be
congured to customer specications.
The actuator used is a high-quality mo-
tor pump unit featuring a pole-changing
motor. At half speed and thus half the
volume ow, the lter unit starts up even
at extremely low temperatures and ex-
tremely high viscosities.
The key component of the FNA 110 lter
unit is the latest generation EXAPOR

loss and high dirt holding capacity

simultaneously long service lives. One
special feature of the lter element spe-
cically designed for wind energy plants
is the combination of a 10 m bre-
glass element (
10(c)
= 200) and a 60 m
strainer element. Flow is permanently
going through the 60 m strainer
element, giving it the function of a
safety lter. Flow starts through the
10 m element at temperatures starting
around 0 C, ensuring the required oil
cleanliness.
A return valve integrated into the lter
housing enables installation below the
oil level.
A thermal valve designed by
ARGO-HYTOS is integrated into the
block that connects the cooler and the
gearbox. Cold oil is fed directly to the
gearbox. As the temperature of the oil
rises, more oil ows to the cooler, which
helps in the controlled thawing of the
entire lubricating-cooling circuit.
A variety of options are available
in addition to the above-mentioned
features:
Ball valve to empty the lter housing
Permanent air vent (afxed to the
lter cover)
Additional connections for
mechanically driven pumps
(spin pump), for example. This
allows the FNA 110 lter unit to
be customised to suit each plant.

nSmartMover driving
simulator at the
Hannover Messe 2011
ARGO-HYTOS is introducing a special
highlight at this years Hannover Messe:
the SmartMover.
About eight years ago, the company
SR-Simulationscenter GmbH in Berlin
started developing driving simulators. It
started with a converted Smart car, the
so-called SmartMover, and the range
has since been expanded to include a
variety of vehicles including a BMW M3,
an Audi A6 and even a tractor. What
is special about the simulators is the
unique driving experience, which com-
bines the drivers performance with the
stored route prole and converts them
into realistic movements of the car body.
To do this, series-production vehicles are
accordingly converted. Following the
conversion, the vehicle is as roadworthy
as it was before and can drive, for
example, from the transporter to the
installation site under its own power
(see also ash edition no. 11).
In the driving simulators, the simulated
route is projected onto the windscreen
from the inside and the car body move-
ments are made possible with the use
of hydraulic cylinders mounted in place
of the shock absorbers. Built-in sen-
sors and distance measurement devices
record the driving behaviour and
transmit the data to a computer, which
then determines the appropriate
car body movements. An integrated
ARGO-HYTOS hydraulic manifold fea-
turing nominal size 4 proportional valves
controls the extension and retraction of
the hydraulic cylinder in accordance with
the data received from the computer.
The highly dynamic hydraulic system
provides the driver with an absolutely
realistic driving experience!

New maintenance
concepts thanks to
continuous oil monitoring
Hydraulic and lubrication systems are
an essential part of mobile machines
in which oil plays a series of important
roles. The oil transmits power, lubricates,
manages heat and transports dirt to
the lters. Scientic studies have shown
that malfunctions in hydraulic and
lubrication systems are predominantly
caused by wear, contamination, deteri-
oration, mixing or extreme temperature
uctuations.
It is, therefore, crucial that the oil is in
proper working order. Knowing the cur-
rent condition of the oil also provides
information as to the condition of the
machine at the same time.
Unlike individual oil samples, continuous
condition monitoring or so-called Online
Condition Monitoring(OCM), of the oil
and the lters enables predictive analysis
and early detection of failures.
Detectable causes of failures include
contamination of the oil by water, dirt,
increased wear, mixing with other uids
and the use of the wrong oil. In addition,
OCM enables better documentation of
service measures including oil changes
and maintenance. Intelligent OCM sen-
sors can extend maintenance and oil
change intervals and prevent produc-
tion downtimes, leading to a signicant
reduction in operating costs.
To cover all aspects of monitoring
the oil condition, ARGO-HYTOS has
added two new sensors to its product
range: The LubCos Visplus and the
LubCos Level. In addition to measuring
the temperature and dielectricity, the
LubCos Visplus also measures viscosity in
particular. Like the LubCos H
2
Oplus, the
LubCos Level is equipped with intelligent
condition monitoring that, among
other things, detects the remaining
useful life of the oil (RUL), the water
content and an oil mixture. However, the
LubCos Level also enables continuous
level measurement, which can replace
existing level and temperature sensors.
This facilitates system integration and
offers additional savings potential by
making other sensors redundant.
Furthermore, the LubCos H
2
Oplus and
the OPCom have been fundamentally
redesigned in keeping with customer
requirements as regards communica-
tion, simple operation and size. Both
sensors now full CANopen standards,
just as the LubCos Level and the LubCos
Visplus, and are thus suitable for mobile
application.
The OCM sensors are completed with
the addition of a new display and
memory unit, the LubMon Visu. It is
compatible with all ARGO-HYTOS OCM
sensors and in addition, any analogue
sensors you want can be connected to it.
LubMonVisu features a graphic display,
a USB connection, an SD card reader, a
real time clock, an internal data memo-
ry, an optional Ethernet interface with
web server, as well as switching contacts
for alarm management. In addition to
other accessories, a printer can also be
connected to the module.
With its CM products, ARGO-HYTOS has
all the aspects of Fluid Condition Moni-
toring covered. From stationary systems
to mobile applications and right down to
the service area, ARGO-HYTOS is your

ARGO-HYTOS s.r.o.
ARGO-HYTOS s.r.o.in the Czech Repu-
blic is committed to the advancement
of its employees and their continuing
education. In keeping with this commit-
ment, a two-year project entitled Pro-
fessional Development for Employees of
ARGO-HYTOS s.r.o. was started.
The objective of this project is to con-
tinue to improve employee qualications
and to continuously expand human re-
sources development measures. The
project will include 21 technical training
sessions, language and IT courses, trai-
ning a total of 107 employees.
The forward-looking advancement of
existing personnel is becoming increa-
singly important, particularly in times
of labour shortages. The expertise of
each individual employee contributes
in turn to an increase in the companys
competitiveness and thus to the long-
term success and sustainable security of
the company and its jobs. The recent
economic crisis has shown how im-
portant it is, even in difcult economic
times, to ensure the sustainability of
the company and thus emerge from the
crisis in a stronger position.
Thanks to the sound design of the pro-
ject, ARGO-HYTOS s.r.o. was able to
obtain additional funding as part of the
European Social Fund (ESF) operational
programme (OP) Human Resources
and Employment. Based on the guide-
lines designed on a European level, the
execution and selection of the individual
programmes takes place on the national
level of the individual member state
involved. The ARGO-HYTOS project
has been selected and approved by the
Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs of
the Czech Republic.
