Then the thought came to me: why would any political
party want to legalize marijuana, which would only
destroy children's lives and families? Is it not the
duty of government to protect the health and safety
of its citizens?
I said a little prayer while I stood at the poolside. I
petitioned that our grandchildren would never live
under a government that would legalize marijuana.

improved in the 80s and it has got really stupid in 90s and now it's
downright dangerous. It wasn't even a temptation.
... I agree with Anne McLellan that there is no study in the world that
shows that marijuana has any medicinal benefits. Would you ever put
any drug on the market untested readily available from dealers on
street corners and say, "oh, well, this has got medicinal benefits." You'd
be run out of town and rightfully so. So, I don't buy the argument that
this has medicinal benefits, it may have psychological benefits. ...

The risks of using illegal drugs, including marijuana or cannabis, are far-
reaching and can have serious consequences on the health and future of young
people, said MP Menegakis. The evidence showing that the use of cannabis
early in adolescence, while the brain is still developing, may lead to more
lasting, irreparable problems is particularly alarming. Our government has no
tolerance for the production and trafficking of illicit drugs and I am proud of
our landmark crime legislation, The Safe Streets and Communities Act that
was enacted to address the serious problem of organized drug crime. In
contrast, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau advocates for the legalization of
marijuana and for making it more easily available to youth, said MP Menegakis.
The simple fact is that marijuana is illegal because of the serious
consequences on its users and on society. While our government is focused on
providing law enforcement the tools they need to keep our communities safe,
Mr. Trudeau is undermining the important work of our police services with his
ill-thought out comments. Clearly, Mr. Trudeau is just in over his head.

Even if Canada legalized marijuana, grow ops
here would remain a hugely lucrative business
for organized crime given our proximity to the
U.S., which has no intention of decriminalizing

I dont think anyone should go to jail for using marijuana, said Mulcair.
But we also think we shouldnt put the cart before the horse.
While stressing the importance of looking at the product available on the current
market, Mulcair said social and health concerns need to be investigated before any
laws are altered.
What we smoked when I was younger is oregano compared to whats on the
market today, said Mulcair, when asked if hes ever smoked marijuana.
Yes to the decriminalization of marijuana, but before we go beyond that we need
to find out all the facts.

The Conservatives are taking a very 1950s approach. I think that they regularly
watch re-runs of Reefer Madness to convince themselves about the problem, but I
think adults are capable of making their own choices on these things.
Marijuana use is a question of personal choice and its something that a government
can do the day after its elected is to simply make sure that theres no longer any
criminal accusations for somebody using marijuana.

decide, via the police, what the actual use of

public good in promoting its use, he said.
