Research Report: Cost Action C17: Built Heritage
Fire Loss to Historic Buildings – Final Report
Consisting of 3 parts, the Final Report of the recently
completed European Science Foundation Research Project
COST Action C17 “Fire Loss to Historic Buildings” has
just been published. Presented as 2 volumes, with a
shorter Executive Summary of the Action, findings and
recommendations, all are combined and contained in a slip
case.
The Action involved participants from 20 countries and had
a key objective in the definition, at a European level, of the
degree of loss to built heritage through the effects of fire, and the
promotion of remedial actions and recommendations to combat this using minimal
invasive techniques.
In order to achieve these aims 4 Working Groups addressed: Data, loss statistics
and evaluating risks: Available and developing technology: Cultural and financial
value: and Property management strategies. The resulting publication provides their
extensive findings to give a comprehensive guide to fire loss statistics; fire detection
and suppression technology; insurance and strategies to cope with fire; and the fire
threat. The report findings are vital to anyone who has an interest in the prevention of
fire in the built environment throughout Europe.

INFORM GUIDES
TCRE continues to develop a new range of publications aimed
at providing an introduction to various issues for homeowners,
and those with responsibility for traditional buildings.
The new additional publications in the ‘INFORM’ series have been printed
relating to Maintaining Sash and Case Windows, Damp Causes and
Solutions, Domestic Decorative Glass, The Use of Lime and Cement in
Traditional Buildings, Repairing Brickwork, Ceramic Tiled Flooring, Pantiles
Maintaining a Pantiled Roof. In the coming months, future guides will be
published relating to Repointing Ashlar; Domestic Boundary Walls; Fireplaces;
Corrugated Iron and other introduction guides to building maintenance. The
aim is to provide concise and accessible information free from jargon, with
useful contacts for those seeking additional information.
NEW
Maintaining sash and case windows FREE
This INFORM provides a basic introduction to the maintenance and repair
of traditional Sash and case windows. The evolution and background to
the windows is covered and a description of how the windows work is also
provided. The guide then goes on to cover common problems associated
with such windows including decay, broken sash cords and deterioration
of putty and mastic. Finally strategies for repair and maintenance of
the different parts of the windows is given to ensure the effective
performance of this integral element of Scotland’s built heritage.
NEW
DAMP Causes and Solutions FREE
Damp is an increasingly common problem in traditional buildings and this
INFORM gives guidance on the causes and early signs of the problem.
Causes such as lack of maintenance, inappropriate repairs and poor
ventilation are all examined in detail. What to look for to prevent and
rectify damp problems is also considered with points including failure of
drainage, blockages of chimneys and checking vents.
NEW
The use of lime & cement in traditional buildings FREE
This INFORM begins with a description of the elements which make up
a mortar mix; a binder, aggregate and water. The different properties
of lime and cement as binders in mortars are then considered before a
comparison between the effects of each on traditional buildings. This
includes taking into account factors such as breathability of buildings,
masonry decay and appearance.
NEW
Repairing brickwork FREE
This INFORM provides detailed guidance on the faults which can arise and
the proper repair techniques of brick work. Signs of deterioration such
as efflorescence, spalling and cracks are described before a detailed
examination of the causes of deterioration including frost, salts and water
ingress. Finally repair and maintenance issues are considered, including
cleaning brickwork, replacing bricks and repairing decayed pointing.
NEW
Ceramic Tiled Flooring FREE
This INFORM provides guidance on ceramic floor tiles. The various types
and layouts of tiles are considered such as geometric tiles, encaustic tiles
and quarry tiles. The various defects which can occur with tiles such as
overlay and cracked tiles are considered before an examination of proper
cleaning and maintenance of these highly decorative elements of many
homes.
NEW
Pantiles Maintaining a Pantiled Roof FREE
This INFORM begins with a brief description of pantiles in Scotland. It then
goes on to examine the construction of a pantile roof before looking at the
common problems these roofs can suffer from such as loose tiles and
deterioration of battens and fixings. Repair and maintenance issues are
then examined such as replacing tiles, insulation and tile fixings.
